District Deli - Build your own sandwich 2 meats, 1 cheese, choice of vegetables. $13.99.

District Deli

TL;DR/The Short Version: Deli serving up loaded sandwiches…read morein Hintonburg. A bit pricey, but tasty. The Long Version: District Deli opened up around March 2025 in the space that was Bismallah Pies (was Charlie's Groceteria before that). My husband and I dropped by to pick up a sandwich to share. The sandwiches are all named after nearby streets, which really gives it that neighbourhood feel. All meat sandwiches are $13.99 and vegetarian sandwiches are $12.49. You can also build your own for $13.99 where you can choose 2 meats, one cheese, and whatever vegetables you like. We went with the build your own option. We got roast beef and prosciutto cotto, fresh mozzarella and lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, pickled onions, pickled eggplants, and roasted red peppers, with a bit of honey mustard. The sandwich was really good. The bread was fresh, as were the other ingredients. It was a bit pricey in my opinion, but this is in comparison to other similar sandwich shops with $8-10 sandwiches (like 50 Two Sandwiches or Shorty's Sandwiches), but they are in industrial parts of town, so I get it, rent in Hintonburg is higher. District Deli only has cold sandwiches. No hot sandwiches, at least not at the time of the writing of this review. Service was courteous and efficient. Street parking only. Review #118 (2025)

We just came back from the Mecca of sandwiches at Old Tyme in Lafayette, LA. I thought there is no…read moreway anyone could possibly come close to the perfection of the Old Tyme Special. Prepare to be amazed............... We had heard about his place for months and how awesome it was so we finally decided to try it out. When we got there at mid-day on a Saturday there was a line up out the door. My wife suggested we go for a walk to let the line thin out a but. We got back and the line had thinned out so we went in. They have a set number of sandwiches and you can also make your own, but we decided to try their set sandwiches. I got the Parkdale and the Holland, my wife got the Bayswater, and we picked up a Scott for my daughter. When we got home, we were nothing short of blown away. The quality of the sandwich was amazing - the bread was light and fluffy, a ton of meat, fresh veggies, great sauces, just incredible quality. More importantly, fantastic value for money. Even more importantly, the staff were wonderful - they chatted with us but kept the line moving - super professional and friendly. The quality of the sandwiches here rivals Old Tyme - no word of a lie. The bread they use is very very close to what we had in Lafayette and the quality of the fillings is outstanding. Don't walk, run to this place. It will change your life for what you think about sandwiches.

Sandwich Factory - Yeah, it's huge, lol. My build-your-own sandwich ($11.88).

You get to choose your bread (and I believe there is no extra charge for gluten-free bread), cheese, up to 3 meats, unlimited vegetables and unlimited sauces. I got the hoagie, which was like a soft submarine bread, with Havarti cheese, chicken, turkey and ham, lettuce, tomatoes, green peppers, black olives, pickles, cucumbers, hot eggplant, roasted red peppers, sun-dried tomatoes and arugula. No sauce (I prefer a drier sandwich, lol). The man who made my bread was super nice. And they have very good sanitation practices. Food preparers wear gloves. The man prepped my bread, meats and cheese, and then put it in the toaster, since I asked to have it toasted. Then he cashed out the lady ahead of me. Then I saw him change his gloves before he came back and finished preparing my sandwich. I wished all restaurants followed these practices. Bravo! The sandwich was cut in half, and I ate half and brought the rest home to my husband, who also thoroughly enjoyed it. My only complaint, and it's totally on me for choosing the toppings, but it was a bit too salty with the black olives, pickles, eggplant AND sun-dried tomatoes. I might just go with the eggplant and skip the other 3 next time. Ingredients tasted fresh. The sandwich was much tastier than at those fast food chains. It's a takeout only joint, located in a strip mall. Lots of free parking in the strip mall.

TL;DR/The Short Version: Cute little place in Stittsville…read moreselling tasty soups and sandwiches. The Long Version: I had lunch at Wiches Cauldron recently and it was great. I got the Chicken Sandwich ($15.95). It was sliced real chicken breast meat, mozzarella cheese, mixed greens, cucumbers, picked onions and fig jam. It usually comes with mayo, but I asked them to omit it. All sandwiches come with a mini 4 oz soup. I chose the curried carrot and squash soup. The sandwich was delicious. The bread they use is a Kaiser and it's from Carp Bakery. It was soft and very fresh. I loved that the meat was real chicken and not deli meat. The fig jam was tasty and gave the sandwich a nice sweet taste. The soup was a bit watery, but was full of flavour. It had a strong curry flavour and the coconut milk in it made it a bit creamy. I enjoyed it. Funny story: I ordered the chicken sandwich. They ask your name for the order. The lady who ordered after me also got the chicken sandwich but she asked for no cheese. The cashier announced to the kitchen "no cheese on the chicken sandwich" and the kitchen asked "which order? Jennifer's?" And the cashier said "no, the next one, I haven't punched it in yet." Lol. I chimed in "I love cheese, I definitely want cheese on my sandwich!" The man in the kitchen said "alright, extra cheese for Jennifer!" And the lady after me said "yeah, you can have my cheese." Haha. So I got two slices of cheese in my sandwich. Score! Lol. Everyone working there was super nice and friendly. It's a small place, so the cash and the kitchen are right next to each other. I took my order to go, but there's seating to dine in. I noticed they have a small amount of branded merchandise, like baseball caps. There is free parking in their private parking lot at the back of the restaurant. Fun facts: The Wiches Cauldron started off as a food truck in the early/mid 2010s. Some time in the early 2020s they moved into their present location which was Red Gables Creperie before (it was also briefly Red Gables Ramen before they rebranded and started selling crepes instead of ramen). The Long Version: I love food places tucked away in industrial parks. So when I had a medical appointment in an industrial part of town, I looked up all the eateries nearby and Shorty's popped up. I picked up 2 sandwiches. They were $8.41 each and were huge. I ate half of each and saved the rest for later. The first sandwich was a grilled chicken sandwich and the second sandwich was a build your own 3 meats sandwich. I chose ham, turkey and roast beef. I got havarti as the cheese. For the grilled chicken sandwich, I got double smoked cheddar as the cheese. I got both sandwiches on the cheese and jalapeno bread and got the same toppings on both: lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, pickles, spicy eggplant, crispy onions and crispy jalapenos. I didn't get any sauce/dressing on the sandwiches because I don't like wet sandwiches. Both sandwiches were delicious. I loved all the different toppings and the crispy onions and jalapenos gave it that extra crunch. I'm all about textures so I really enjoyed the contrasts. Service was efficient. There are seats to dine in if you wish to, but it's more a takeout joint. Free parking available in the industrial strip mall. There are even picnic tables in the parking lot. Review #106 (2025)
