Lovely "mom & pop" run business that turns out gorgeous artisanal glass pieces certain to improve any space they grace! I already had two bowls ("vintage" as they were fired in 2007!) and on my Thanksgiving trip to NOLA this year (visiting my son who is a professional artist), I treated myself to 3 gorgeous perfume bottles!!! It was such a treat to also watch the owner & his assistants making beautiful works of art in the studio! So the building itself, beautiful. The staff for the most part, super welcoming and friendly. I see other reviewers speak of Mark the owner, and I'm sure he's a great guy. Unfortunately, you cant always help who you fall in love with I suppose... The woman that introduced herself rather rudely as the owner; was not at all welcoming. And to be completely honest, I've dealt with rude people many times now in my adult life, and I've learned to take it with a grain of salt. What I can't overlook however, is a racist. I am a father to two biracial children, and I took my two boys to see this shop as we had just happened to talk about how glass was created, so the idea came to me that it would be far more memorable to SHOW them, as opposed to tell them right? Well, nothing more convenient than a glass blowing business in our own town. I explained the process to them on the way to Rosetree (to the best of my ability) and my two were stoked. When we arrived, I explained to them to stay close to me, and to not touch anything (the normal parent speech); and my boys 8 & 12 are very well mannered and behaved. Fast forward, after the boys got to view the process, we perused the store. Nice items? Sure. Overpriced? Insanely. Nonetheless, we viewed the pieces and then were going to leave. Here's where things went south. My 12 year old needed to use the restroom. My 8 year old decided he wanted to go with him. As such, he quickly half sprinted to try to catch up to his older brother, when the owner comes over and tries to reprimand them, at which point, I reminded the boys to calm down, and then politely asked the lady to not speak to my boys in that manner. I figured, that it was polite enough, yet would get the point across. Except this lady, the "owner" tells me that "she isnt going to allow little nigger kids to tear up her store...." I will say in all honesty, I probably should have been more calm in my response; but these are my kids, and I dont care who you are, you don't speak to my or about my kids that way. I came unglued. She double downed on her statement and scurried to the back like the rat she is muttering about calling the cops. I told her to go ahead, and that I hoped a black officer arrived to take the criminal complaint. Needless to say, I grabbed my boys out of the bathroom and got them to the car to leave. Look, I know there is racism. I know that its prevalent. I know that this is the South and its more prevalent here; but I will say this is the first time I have ever been exposed to outright blatant racism. Maybe it's because I'm a white dad to two biracial children, but it's not something I have ever experienced first hand, and I am sad for the future my boys will have to endure if the world is full of people like this lady. So do what you will, the store has nice things. It has nice employees. But the owner is absolute trash, and I wish nothing but the worst for her and her business. I honestly feel a bit sorry for her. I have two great boys, and her outlook on them as nothing but a derogatory name because of the color of their skin means that she would never get the opportunity to experience how great of kids they are. As for myself, and my family however; we will never come back to the store again. We will be telling all of our friends, our family, and website review boards about our experience, so maybe it will save someone else the heartbreak that it could have caused my boys. read more

Pumpkin glassblowing!!! My friend decided to surprise me with a random adventure, and I'm so glad he did. Walking into the studio, my eyes grew wide with wonder as I peered down into the vat of molten glass (from a safe distance and with my sunglasses). It was awesome! I had never blown glass before. If you could have only seen the molten glass mishap scenarios that were going through my mind... Thanks to the staff at Rosetree who were absolutely incredible, none of those mishaps came to fruition. They explained everything and were our friendly guides through the entire process of heating, layering, shaping, and blowing. It was such a fun time and the pumpkins turned out beautifully!! I came here for a small party Friday night with some coworkers to make ornaments. I had never been here before but most of them had and they all raved about it. The place is located far back in a neighborhood in Algiers. It used to be an old movie theater. The front is the gallery where you can see all of their wares and purchase pieces already made if you like. The middle area above is where you choose your colors and sign your waiver form, etc. It is also a large waiting area with a table where you can put food and drinks for your party/gathering. There is a couch and chairs. The back area where the film used to be shown is the actual studio with the furnace and ovens. It is very hot down there! The staff is friendly and helpful as they guide you through the process of creating your piece. You have to leave your creation there and pick it up another day so it can cure. All in all, it was a very fun experience and I look forward to going back again. read more

Hey! Was your father a glassblower? Why yes he was. Many years ago when I was a young boy, my mother gave my dad glassblowing lessons as a gift. I remember being amazed at all of the cool, funky creations he made and brought home. Now that he is gone, those are some of my most cherished possessions. What does that have to do with Rosetree? Standby and I will tell you. Rosetree is located in what appears to be an old theater in the (Old) Algiers neighborhood of New Orleans. I have passed by this location many times without even realizing what it was. But now that I've been inside, I keep thinking about how much I want to go back. The front half of the gallery is filled with hand blown glass creations. Some are very expensive, but there are also reasonably priced pieces that are just as neat as their more expensive items. I particularly liked the hand blown flowers, pumpkins and bowls. The artist is truly talented and I suspect you couldn't find anything of this high quality in any retail outlet. The rear of the gallery is a party space and the studio itself. They host a lot of private parties there, but do also hold an occasional class that is open to the public. If I thought I could get enough Yelpers to sign up, I would hold a UYE here. I love the idea of being able to create a unique piece of art with searing hot temperatures, glass and my own hot air. Walking through this studio brought back all of those memories of my dad. I realize most people won't have such a moving experience, but for me that was truly priceless. Y'all I got to use a blowtorch! I wasn't allowed to use it by myself, but still BLOWTORCH! I went to a glassblowing class in May (I think classes will be happening again come fall) that a friend scheduled for a huge group of us on a Friday night. There was a party room for us to bring food and drinks and then we all took turns making pumpkins (other choices include ornaments and eggs...but maybe tumblers in the future). I was semi-terrified that I was going to melt glass on myself or others but our instructor made sure we were safe...and y'know she let me handle the blowtorch so all the stars! The selection of items for sale is diverse and beautiful and I love the old movie theater setting. Definitely a great time! read more

Beautiful! This is one of the highlights of our "day trip" to Algiers. The blown glass products were works of art and are beautifully displayed in the store front shop. The entire shop used to be a theater it appears. And instead of tearing the place down, they re-purposed it to feature a different type of art. The back wall of the shop is glass so that you could see into the workshop where workers are busy melting glass in the giant furnace and creating products there. Unfortunately, if you think you can get the items dirt cheap because you skipped the middle men and retailers and buying direct from the manufacturer... not so much. But if you think about this as a souvenir or an investment, it won't hurt too much. Check out their lighting products too. Wow! read more

I am reviewing the pumpkin glassblowing class done in October. This place deserves above and beyond 5 stars. Me and my family made pumpkins ($50 a piece) and they were so fun to make. On the phone they said it would take about 30 minutes for all of us to make the pumpkins, but it actually took about 20 minutes each for us to make the pumpkins. First you pick out your colors you want your pumpkin to be. There are so many different shades to pick - anything from purples, to blues, to transparent, to opaque. (I picked an opaque yellow and multi colored top) After picking the colors, the staff will then tell you what you are going to do with the glass and how hot the glass is. Be VERY CAREFUL - the glass is about 1600F! The next process is a bit complicated but you basically roll your glass into your colored glass, have to heat it up and spin it, add more glass to the pumpkin, dip that glass into the second color, heat it, spin it etc. Once your pumpkin has both colors, the staff sticks it in a mold and you blow as hard as you can to make your pumpkin bigger. After it is blown, you need to keep spinning the pumpkin while the person who was helping you makes the staff to stick it on. Once you are done with the pumpkin, it is whisked away so it can cool over two days. We made our pumpkins on a Saturday and then picked them up on Tuesday. After making the pumpkins, we walked around the store and looked at the awesome things you could buy - we were even suckered in to make ornaments in December! read more

We came across the Mississippi on the Algiers Ferry. We planned a walk around historic Algiers. The Rosetree Glass Studio was a planned stop. We were looking forward to seeing some beautiful glass. We weren't disappointed. The Studio Art Deco theater facade wets the appetite for what is inside. You walk into a gallery filled with Mark Rosenbaum's work. We were greeted by Mark's wife, Brenda. She graciously showed us around and then invited us to browse the beautiful glass art. She invited us to watch a video from HGTV in which Mark talked about his work including an explanation of his glass blowing process. We then were able to view the work area. We eventually picked out a couple of pieces to be shipped back to our home. Mark graciously talked with us about the work we bought, and a possible future request. And then Brenda took the time at our request to recommend a great local cafe for lunch. This is a very nice excursion when you are in New Orleans, The Ferry is $2 each way. The Studio is a moderate walk from the Ferry Landing. This is well worth a half day. read more

My husband and I visited New Orleans for our anniversary and I wanted to find fun things to do beside eat ourselves into a stupor every day. I searched for glassmaking classes and first found a more well-known one in the city, New Orleans Glassworks. I tried to schedule us into a class that they showed on their website. It was impossible. The owner seems quite frankly extremely unhelpful and borderline rude/snarky. I then read some yelp reviews stating pretty much exactly that. Fast forward to Rosetree and what a difference! Pleasant and prompt response to my inquiry but best of all: they actually set up a private session for us because their normal Saturday class was not occurring the weekend that we were there. I did not even have to ask, they offered to do it with no trouble at all and they let us pick whatever we wanted to make. I made a long stemmed flower and husband made a tumbler. We weren't forced to make a pumpkin just because that's the seasonal item at the moment and were able to pick any color or color combination we wanted from their many choices. We were expertly guided by a wonderful young woman who works there, Devon. She was kind, patient, and most of all very clear in telling us what to do and how to do it. It's always great to meet artists with unusual skills like hers. Their showroom has many gorgeous items for sale as well. Highly recommend taking the short ferry over to Algiers Point to visit this off the beaten path studio. read more

While visiting New Orleans last week, a friend and I took a walking tour of Algiers point. Lucky for us, this awesome place was on the list; so, we decided to stop in and have a look. We found Mark, the talented artist, hard at work on some beautiful new pieces. Although he was working, he took a break and made time to talk with us, open the gallery, and answer all of our questions. He also showed us a really cool video that provided great information about the glass blowing process and the interesting history of this location (it used to be a movie theatre!). We left knowing so much more than we expected to learn! In addition to the information about his studio and art, he also took the time to give us advice about other places to go, where to eat, and cool cultural stuff happening while we were in town. Talk about hospitality! We were SO GLAD we stopped in, and we hope to see more of his beautiful creations in our neck of the woods (Miami and South Florida) in the future! I was recently in New Orleans for the French Quarter Festival, and had hoped to take the ferry across to Algiers to visit the Rosetree Glass Studio. The weather made the visit problematic, but I knew exactly what I wanted to order, so I took a chance and made a phone call. The Owner/Artist, Mark, personally answered the phone. When I explained what I wanted, he could not have been any more accommodating! I placed my order, specifying the colors/shapes I wanted and headed home to Los Angeles. The package arrived today! The blown glass flowers were so beautiful! They are a gift for my Boss, and when she saw them, she thought they were so amazing that she got weepy! They were perfect; exactly what I wanted! If that weren't enough to rave about, let me also add that they were packed SO securely, that it would have been close to impossible to damage them while being shipped! Even though I live in Los Angeles, I would not hesitate to order online or over the phone again, knowing that the craftsmanship is non comparable and that whatever I order will arrive safe and sound! My lovely bride bought me a pair of beautiful Rosetree martini glasses from a gallery in Omaha, Nebraska, while we were on a road trip several years ago. They became instant favorites in our house for our regular end-of-the-long-workday "martini time" -- helping make an excellent cocktail an even more special event, and a highlight of the day. Our busy family is hard on glass in the kitchen, though, so we've been through a few replacements of the original pair over the years. I just received my most recent replacement through UPS, and it's yet another beautiful work of art. We're huge fans of the Rosenbaums' work! We ended up here because I was dying to see a real glassblowing studio in action. When we arrived, the owner showed us to the reception area and set us up with a video that showed how things work. We were also able to watch through the windows as the lovely items were being made. Everything in the store was gorgeous!
