When it comes to a culinary adventure, it can be difficult to tell whether or not a feeling of familiarity is a good sign. At times it suggests that a concept is overdone or unoriginal, and at other times that familiarity strikes us at a more profound level -- as if we've been there before in a past life, or as if there's something there that feels like home. I was lucky to find this feeling at a stunning café nestled into the greenery of Djurgården in southern Stockholm, a beacon of warmth and light amidst the afternoon chill. My traveling companion and I had spent the morning perusing the vast collections at Prins Eugens Waldemarsudde, finding ourselves enchanted by the glorious staterooms and the expertly curated painting exhibitions. It's a known fact that museums always tend to make me hungry, and so after exploring the grounds I was just about ready for something to nibble on. By this point in my Swedish adventure, fika had become the most cherished hour (or several) of the day. From cardamom buns to princess cake, I had become fully absorbed in this tradition and was fully committed to incorporating it into my life back in the States. While the simplest translation is "a coffee break," for my traveling companion and I had had become so much more -- an invitation to unwind, to take refuge from the Swedish cold, and perhaps most importantly, to indulge a little. This stunning spot came at a recommendation of a friend of mine who had studied in Copenhagen for a semester and ended up here on a class trip. Luckily, this friend has impeccable taste. Rooted in (pun intended) community, Rosendals Trädgård is a veritable jack-of-all trades. From producing many of their own ingredients on site to serving treats and hearty fare alike, there is so much that this place gets right. To get to the café you walk past a series of plots alive in the soil, wondering what grows there and who planted it. When you reach the café you find that it's a real greenhouse, steeped in sunlight and awash in a rich sea of blues. It's beautiful on the outside, and even more gorgeous on the inside. Something about the self-serve style setup made me feel like I was at a friend's house for tea, contributing to the delightfully homey feel that had seeped into every corner of the abode. I sampled a couple of cookies from the buffet, and my dining companion did the same. When we took our seats, we found that each bite left us feeling warm and comforted despite the nip of Swedish spring beyond the walls of the greenhouse. It was a simple meal, an afternoon pick-me-up, yet it seemed to fill us up in spirit the same way a four-course meal would have filled our bellies. For a plate full of something that feels like home even if you're thousands of miles away from your own, Rosendals Trädgård is an immaculate refuge. This place is a short walk from the tram and it's worth the trek after visiting Vasa museum or Skansen. The walk is absolutely gorgeous and it makes you feel as if you're stepping into an oasis away from Stockholm. They had some Christmas decorations up and a tree, so it felt very festive, even if most of the trees were bare for winter. I loved the meal setup -- there were some quick bites available to grab, as well as pastries, and there were dishes you could order. I got an Asian slaw sandwich and a saffransbulle (LOVE these). I also opted for one of their flavored hot teas, because it was cold in Stockholm in November! The food was great in the cafe, but even better was the plant shop next door! They had Christmas ornaments for sale, as well as lots of handcrafted items and lots of plants. Definitely worth a visit! read more

This place is awesome and a high light to visit. Sadly we arrived at 7:40 and hesitated on ordering food. At 8:02 we were informed service was closed. No notice anywhere about early ending and no last call. We were excited about trying the food and especially as put of towners. Additionally asked, "can any dish be made, I was asked if we had a reservation. The place was empty and we were clearly foreigners so that was used as an excuse to close the kitchen early. Rosendals was a sublime experience. You get to eat in an apple orchard. They grow and serve their own food. It's seasonal and tasty. My wife said the carrot cake was the best she has ever had and I agree with her. After a day biking through Djugarden Rosendals is a delightful stop to satisfy your hunger while surrounded by nature. read more

Food here was fairly expensive, but it's all fresh. It was a hot day so we opted to sit in the garden area instead of inside the greenhouse. There were lots of tiny birds flying around in the outdoor area, which added to the relaxing atmosphere. They have several open face sandwiches and also lots of pastries to choose from like cinnamon bread, chocolate cake, mixed berry bake. There are also a few entrees to pick from like Mediterranean salad. We opted for the sandwich and some pastries to keep it simple. Food here was decent. I would skip the pastries and probably shell out for the expensive entrees since those will be fresh from the garden. This place is really more for the ambiance and not the food itself. read more

Rosendals Trädgård is definitely a must visit if you're ever in Stockholm! I can't believe I haven't visited sooner. It's located in the same area as Skansen and the ABBA museum. I came here for a late lunch with my sister and I ordered a herring salad and my sister ordered a soup. We went at around 1 or 2 PM I think and the kitchen was about to close so I was glad we got there when we did! There were sandwiches and desserts available for purchase after that time as well though. For dessert, my sister had some pastries and I had some caramel ice cream from the gift shop which I enjoyed. I enjoyed the food better at Wärdshuset Ulla Winbladh but the ambience here is what made this place so amazing. Rosendals Trädgård is straight out of my dreams. From the moment I stepped off the ferry and walked to the garden I felt as if I were in an Astrid Lindgren fairytale. There are fields of flowers, vegetables, and grains; green houses filled with herbs, a local cafe, and a shop full of handmade breads, jams, teas, and many more goodies. Everything served in the cafe is made from the produce and grains grown in the garden - it's incredible! The garden itself is quite huge with many different buildings and landscaped areas. You're probably thinking a garden isn't that big of a deal, but honestly this place is so beautiful and magical I've never been anywhere like it. If you are visiting Stockholm you MUST come here, especially if you're visiting during warmer months (not sure if they operate in the winter). I was lucky enough to be here on a warm summer day and the garden bustling with lots of happy people picking flowers & enjoying delicious food in the sunshine. I do understand why this café has been ranked no.1 in Stockholm by the White Guide, it is truly grand and beautiful - it is a must visit for locals and tourist. In the middle of the Rosendals garden there is a greenhouse, which actually is the café itself. During summers I would recommend sitting on the grass or near the blooming trees and have a pick nick. But now during autumn, it is just as lovely to sit indoors sipping a hot cup of coffee. The café is niched towards selling ecological products and even though eco products are usually a lot more expensive in Stockholm, the price for most of their things are very reasonable. The café has a small variety of pastries, ice cream and buns and offers simple lunches such as salads. The bakery which is next to the café is also a must visit, last time going here I bought some freshly baked shortbread which was really delicious. read more

Thank you yelp for this recommendation! It was such a nice hike and to be rewarded to find this. It did seem like most of the people that were here were Swedish from an older generation. The location was something out of a movie with beautiful flowers and manicured landscaping. You are able to pick the flowers for a small fee to rent the scissors from the garden shop. Probably one of the most scenic gardens I have ever visited. You have the option to purchase the daily menus from behind the counter or pick what you like from the buffet. I enjoyed my cheese sandwich for lunch. The cookies for dessert were absolutely fabulous. They were probably the best non-homemade cookie I have ever had. They have a variety of carbonated juices, beer, and wine. The prices were average for Stockholm. You are able to eat in the gardens or around the cafe. read more

The cafe at Rosendals Trädgård is unbelievable. First of all, the setting is absolutely gorgeous--sitting among the greenhouses of the garden and surrounded by apple orchards, this is such a peaceful place to enjoy a casual lunch. Walking in, you'll find a line-up of baked goods and sandwiches, but they also serve a menu of prepared plates that you order from the server. Everything here is so fresh, and some of the ingredients used come right from the garden! On the day we came, the cafe was serving an entree of wild boar ribs, served over raw riced cauliflower with grilled cucumbers--the ribs were fall-off-the-bone tender (I couldn't even imagine how they put them on the plate without them falling apart), and the cauliflower mixture was a nice earthy complement to the smokey meat. We also had the salad, which was an herb blend with roasted sweet potato, aubergine, walnuts, and plenty of feta cheese. There was actually no dressing on the salad--just a light spice mixture that really brought all the fresh ingredients together! After getting our order, we also helped ourselves to plenty of the fresh bread--both the rye and the apple breads baked here were unbelievable! We couldn't complete our visit in Sweden without trying a cinnamon roll from Rosendals as well, and it was unbelievable. Not overly sweet (like many American versions), the roll was perfectly crispy on the outer edges and soft and fluffy on the inside. There was a perfect amount of spice and just a light amount of sweetness and crunch from the sugar crystals on the outside--amazing! The cafe at Rosendals Trädgård was undoubtedly my favorite meal during my visit in Stockholm--the flavors of the dishes were actually not particularly unusual or over the top, but the local sourcing of ingredients, the simple preparation, and the fresh flavors really made my visit so memorable! read more

Rosendals is situated in an absolutely beautiful garden, and has cafeteria style food that's quite delicious! I had to smorrebrod and some on-tap wine and sat outside. It's a very relaxing environment even if there happen to be a lot of other people there that day. My only complaint is the price, but you're paying for the setting. I'd definitely go back! read more

When walking up to RT, you don't think that much of it. It seems like it's a normal greenhouse with a few tables to the side. But, once you get your food and go to sit down, you end up wandering through all this nature! TIP: keep walking all the way in the back.. didn't even realize you could sit in the the apple orchard until after we were done! I'm sure people out living in a beautiful part of the countryside probably don't think too much of it here, but it's so nice to sit in a garden when you've been cooped up in a Stockholm apartment most of the year! I love flowers!!! This was so nice! We only came here for a fika (swedish coffee and desert break). The cake and cookie were good, though not earth shatteringly amazing. I think a lot of what I hear about this place is people gushing about the main course options and how they are organic and great. I have not been here for that yet, so I can't really comment on it. However, this place is a nice little retreat even for a little snack, like what we had! I'm looking forward to apple picking and flower cutting here next time (it was mentioned in a few other reviews that I didn't get to read before hand! I've totally got to check that out!) My son is a genius. We got him to plan our Stockholm visit and he curated an amazing itinerary. There are two kinds of places in the world when I visit I just feel like curling up and staying there until I die: libraries and nurseries. My son suggested a visit here for a late lunch. Oh my god, it is heaven on earth. Fields of flowers, vegetables and eating yummy food in green houses and open gardens. We got the sausage pizza and the vegetarian pizza. I took a bit of my son's pizza and the peppers were fresh and sweet. And the desserts are lovely too. I liked this restaurant in a greenhouse, with nature all around just outside, a cute little shop next door, lots of yummy-looking small sandwiches and carrot cake and things you can get, and 3 hot dishes you can choose from too; it was kinda pricy, like 130 krona for the pumpkin-turnip-sauerkraut-creme fresh dish I got, but I guess that's Stockholm. Fantastic location for a cafe, however slightly difficult to find. We arrived to the island via boat and a few more signs to the cafe would have been appreciated!! We ordered a salad and fish, both of which were packed full of flavour. We could tell that the salad and vegetables were grown in the grounds! My friend the went back for a gluten free dessert, which was fresh and tasty.. The small shop next to the cafe is fantastic! Many breads, oils, jams and chutneys to purchase! The gardens that the cafe are situated in are great, we went in summer so there was an abundance of flowers and vegetable patches, that then leads out into an orchard with picnic benches. How can a person not LOVE this restaurant? Taken here by my Swedish in-laws for lunch after a walk around Djurgården Island, we loaded our plates WAY too full from the buffet-style offerings because, hey, when you're in heaven for less than two hours it's difficult to not succumb to one of the seven deadly sins: gluttony. Sustainable in concept, indoor and outdoor seating, fresh everything, a garden and food lover's delight. Gift shop, too. Nice photography opportunities. Not cheap but I'll gladly pay more to support them as they're stewarding the land and doing things the right way. read more

Lovely environment for a picnic. But the food and baked goods selection here is not great, and ridiculously overpriced for what it is. Everything just looks uninspiring, portions are tiny and in what we tried there wasn't much flavour. The lines are long to buy anything, so not worth it. I've had better cakes and food at IKEA, for 20% of the prices! Even the coffee was really sour and crazy expensive. Ugh. So take a walk here but skip the food, bring some drinks with you and enjoy the trees and plants. read more

Summertime in Stockholm can be fantastic. And to truly enjoy it to the fullest, you need to spend some time outdoors and away from clustered shopping districts. To accomplish this, there are many options in the woods hours away, or an island that might take a 1 1/2 hour - 2 hour ferry ride. Or you can take the bus over to Djurgarden and have nice walk to this park / cafe area. They serve very tasty food, it seems that a lot of it is locally sourced. You will find a couple meat dishes, a seafood option, a vegetarian option and then just some nice salads or pastries for those with a sweet tooth. . Prices are kinda expensive, but you may have already figured out that any dining out in Stockholm involves a dent in your wallet/purse. But this is a spot worth getting some food at and then lounging on their large grass lawns. And if an apple has fallen to the ground, you are welcome to take it as yours. read more

Very understaffed and badly managed. It took more than 45 minutes for our soup to come out and by that time, my friend's dish had long since gotten cold. The coffee was awful. The food was below average. It was quite ordinary. This wouldn't be such a big point accept for the fact that I expect more if I'm going to pay such high prices. Part of the appeal of this place is that it grows its own vegetables and uses them in the dishes. However, on the menu there were very few things that advertised any ingredients coming from the garden. Again, wouldn't be a big deal except for the expectation I have with those obscenely high prices. The surroundings are beautiful. It was nice to eat on the grass in the sunshine. I had looked on here for places to eat on Djurgården and this place caught my eye right away. There were no photos of how it looked in winter so I wasnt sure if it would still be nice to go to but IT WAS! The fairy lights, snow, and icicles gave a magical atmosphere. I had carrot cake and my husband had a cinnamon bun, both were delicious! The cafe area inside an old greenhouse was so cozy. I'd love to visit here in the summer as well. I wish we would have known beforehand that the cafe has its own parking lot for customers. Parking it quite expensive on Djurgården so we walked quite a long ways when we possibly could have parked for free on the island since we ate at the cafe. It is a pretty small lot though and I would imagine in the summer it would be filled up really quickly but since it was winter it was hardly full, plus it was the first day they had opened again for the year. read more

Nice surroundings with green and lush gardens, but the service is on par with service you would expect if you were visiting a venue in the old Soviet Union. Selection of food was poor as well, true there WAS a choice of dishes, but almost everything was already gone. If you love gazpacho soup, good for you, since that was more or less what was left. And yes, while standing in line to the restrooms (or toilets if you prefer) an old lady tried to persuade the queue that "there are several other toilets over there" (waving in a general direction) and that we all should go there instead of waiting in queue where we were. I absolutely love the concept of this place, and while the food was great, I'd recommend avoiding it on weekends because its chaos, which takes away from the enjoyment. The location is in the middle of the beautiful Djurgarden island, which is a lovely walk itself. The greenhouses and plants which immediately surround the cafe are also very nice and make more a nice setting for eating (if you can manage to get some food). The baked items all looked delicious but we didn't sample any. There were sandwiches available plus there were 3 items listed on the board - a brisket dish, a salad, and a soup. I think its safe to assume there is always something vegetarian available. I didn't see any signs of a buffet when we were there on Sunday afternoon around 1pm. You select what you want from the table or order at the counter, then stand around until they bring the food out. The line was very long when we were there, and though the staff was friendly, it was a challenge to order and then get our food. And then there weren't any clean cups available for water. One you get your food you're welcome to find any seat and there are many of them in various spots on the property, but its a bit of a trick to carry a large bowl of hot soup around and try and fight other patrons for a seat. That said, the carrot soup was delicious. I'd still recommend going but definitely pick an off time to have a more peaceful experience. read more

The best place in the whole world to have a Sunday breakfast-brunch. In autumn it is so beautiful with all those different colors in the garden and with new harvest on the fields. Very cosy feeling to seat outside and enjoy the last sun before the winter. In spring, divine place to smell blossoming apple trees and enjoy the weekend. The place is hidden from the crouds and it is not that easy just to run on it during a walk, which makes this place even more special, and just "for locals". read more

Food is excellent here: I had their tomato soup a gloomy November day and it lifted my spirits high! The glass roof lets in wonderful light which makes it an excellent winter spot to enjoy some precious day light. My boyfriend ate oxe and it was prepared to perfection and came with a delicious potato mash. The guy we ordered from helped him to an extra large serving since he was very hungry. The garden is fantastic with apple trees and different crops on the grounds and summertime you can sit outside or bring a blanket of your own. They sell some of their produce in their store. The only bad part about this place is that it is usually packed with people and that they only have two (!) restrooms for the probably over 100 guests that they have at any given time on a normal weekend day. read more

These gardens were a little slice of heaven. When visiting Stockholm, I would blast this little gem right up to the top of your list, weather providing. Here's what you do. You get yourself a bike. Stockholm has so many bike lanes and so few bikers- it's almost too good to be true. Get to know the islands a bit by taking a leisurely (bike) stroll, and then make your way over to Djurgarden at the end of the morning. Get lost a bit on the island and then find your way to Rosendals Trägård. Get lost again. The grounds are spectacular. An extremely relaxed and beautiful atmosphere, it's the perfect place to have your lunch. They have both an organic cafe with quiches and sandwiches and sweets, plus teas and coffee, soda and beer. Or you can go to the little shop next door for a more DIY picnic. There are tables and chairs set up right in front of the cafe, but I prefer to wander out a bit further and enjoy my lunch under the fruit trees. Really- magical. read more

Add to that a cafe that makes organic food and a little shop that sells organic produce make it a lot more inviting. The food in the cafe is very tasty, although quite expensive. One of my absolute favorite places in Stockholm. The atmosphere is charming and the food is delicious. Walking through Djurgården to get there just adds to the experience. I especially enjoy it when we get to eat something grown in their garden. Oh, and I really appreciate the way they use vegetables on the menu. Many restaurants usually stick with a theme of starch and cheese when it comes to the vegetarian option, but Rosendals always does something fresher and more creative. I remember one salad that was lentils, beets, oranges, a little (non-sticky) bulgur, all on top of baby lettuces from the garden. Yum! I know people are cuckoo for cocoa puffs about this place and it is absolutely in a fantastic location, very relaxed atmosphere and a chance to get out of the city and all that but I can't say I'm completely drinking the cool aid for this one. I've had the salmon here last year and I remember it being good and I had the chocolate cake today and it was definitely heavy but tasty and well made. Its a place you should definitely visit and sure I guess making it a tradition to return every summer isn't so bad. Its a beautiful area. The coffee/lunch can be purchased on the pricey coffee in the vicinity if your budget allowes.
