Came by after a run on a weekday late morning, got an almond croissant and a kenelbullar. I was debating between the kardemummabullar and the kenelbullar so I asked the cashier who said she likes the kenelbullar. Another person who was putting fresh ones into the casing said she likes the cardamom ones, so I went with the kenelbullar since they were just getting placed into the casing. Almond croissant was so-so, the edges were a bit hard and dry although the middle was good. The kanelbullar was really soft and tasty, very fresh. I love baking and live in a great bread/baking region (SF Bay Area) so I needed to check out the best bakeries while traveling in Sweden. We stopped in at Valhallabageriet to try their famous bullar - one cardamom and one cinnamon. Both were good, but I think the cardamom bun was the standout (I may be biased - I prefer cardamom buns in general). Definitely worth popping into this small bakery while in Stockholm! read more

I only have two words: Cardamom. Rolls. (or one, kardemummabullar, if we're speaking Swedish). GET THEM IN YOUR BELLY! Holy mother of Jesus. Their cardamom rolls are the holy grail of all cardamom rolls. The Swedes fika all day long, and if you're going to get yourself a sweet bun from anywhere, you should really get it at Valhallabageriet. Soft, buttery, and sweet (but not too sweet either). Goes perfect with a cup of coffee or tea. I also got a small savory walnut baguette and that was also quite delicious, so dare I say this, but basically I don't think you can go wrong with whatever baked good you decide to purchase here. But like I said, get the cardamom roll and you won't regret it. read more

I'm shocked the wait isn't even longer than it already was. This is one of the best bakeries I've ever been to. Everything is amazing. While we waited, everyone kept telling us how amazing it was. It's largely unknown to tourists because it is in a little bit of a hidden neighborhood, but definitely worth the trek. Everything in Stockholm seems to have a numbering system and this bakery is no exception, so the first thing you should do is grab a number! They call the numbers out in Swedish, but you can check the status by going in and looking at the counter where they stack the used numbers. We knew we wanted a cardamom pastry, but they were all out by the time our turn was up. But we were offered an alternative cardamom half loaf, which was just as great and we were able to save some of it for dessert later on in the day. The square croissant with custard and fresh blueberries was divine, the strange bar with nuts on top was great for me, but the boyfriend was too distracted by the cardamom loaf to pay much attention to it. We also tried some tea and it's delicious. Loose leaf and freshly made. You order that at the counter, but if you're more of a coffee person, the coffee is self serve and you just let them know so you can pay for it. If in Stockholm, this is a must try if you're a food lover. read more

It's beginning to sound like an echo chamber here, but I have to agree with some of the other reviewers who had written about this place before me: I had arguably the best meal of my time in Stockholm, possibly in Scandinavia, at this place. I'm so glad that I managed to find this place, so thank you, fellow Yelpers, for writing about it in the first place! This bakery is on an otherwise sleepy street in the Ostermälm section of Stockholm. I got a caprese sandwich, coffee, and one of their kardemummabullar for my breakfast. The sandwich was delicious, as was the coffee, but the true gem to my meal was their humble kardemummabullar. Holy crap, it was like heaven in my mouth. So delicately flavored and yet so complex. I weep (well, not really, but that's hyperbole for ya) when I think about far away Stockholm is from NYC and how far away I am from this place because I would come by here everyday to get some more of their pastries. I suspect that their other items are just as delicious, but I implore all of you who may consider coming by here to try out their kardemummabullar. That alone is worth the trip. read more

Of all the meals I had in Europe on this trip, Valhallabageriet may have been the best. And I did my research and tried to find the best places I could. But the products that are served here are amazing. I'm speculating here, but my guess is that it's a combination of the freshness and attention to detail on every piece. The bread was impossibly soft. The apple tart was smooth and amazing. And I still have dreams of the cinnamon roll. Stand in line patiently. Take the food to a park nearby, there are plenty. It looked, smelled, tasted, and felt good. It is really beyond words. Don't forget to take a number (at the right of the door) and if you don't speak Swedish--keep an eye on the person who may have gotten the number in front of yours. They speak English, and are quite friendly--but the last two numbers are called out in Swedish. Worth a trip. Anything flaky (croissants, fruit square on flaky bread [2nd best thing we ate here]), yeasty (canella or cardamom bun [THE highlight for me]), or more dense (chocolate ball, nut square) were all excellent. I can't believe no one has mentioned the King Oscar II torte / cake !! I'd like to see a photo of it if someone enjoys this soon!! The King Oscar II cake I enjoyed was an almond torte, many layers, coated in almonds on its exterior, with a very, very light butter - cream frosting (almost as if half whipped cream frosting mixed with butter cream frosting). I'd LOVE to find (or devise) a recipe for this cake that I enjoyed here. The recipe I see online for this cake state that it's hazelnut, and look short and gooey. While this bakery's version was tall-ish, almond, and VERY light. Unbelievably delicious!! If anyone could post a photo of it, or post or send me an approximation of the recipe used by this bakery, I'd feel really grateful. If I figure out a copycat recipe, I'll update this review. Ok, We are biased. We are neighbours of the bakery. Our children grew up on this bread and they still love it. We eat breakfast here a at least 3 times a month. And its the only bread we eat, sourdough loaf. We love it here and the bread are indeed fantastic. They make classic pastries like the cinnamon bun but they are extraordinary even for Swedes. We´ve lived in Paris and the croissants and pain au chocolat measures up. I should warn all Tourists from the egg sandwich, haha. We put Kalles Kaviar on it. Kalles Kaviar is a bit anchovy tasting but a favorite in Sweden, like marmite I Think. If you do not like that but want egg, you should ask them to make one without the Kalles. Haha! That goes for all sandwiches, they´ll do it. They also serve grilled sandwiches which are a delight, its all written in Swedish so its hard to know. On fridays and saturdays they make cheese and olive rolls and bread. Those are really tasty if your into more savoury stuff. My personal favourites are the flaky, sugary rolls with sesame seeds and pumpkin seeds, soft sugar prezel (sockerkringla), pain au chocolat, croissants and the circelshaped jam cookies and cardamom bar/cookies. read more

I visited 3 times while in Stockholm. 2 times I had the cardamon buns- the first time it was still slightly warm from the oven. It was the best baked good I have ever eaten in my life. Totally OK neighborhood spot, but nothing special. Very limited seating, and tables were dirty. Only breakfast option available is a cold sandwich (no porridge, chia pudding, or other selections commonly available at similar establishments). Sandwich was normal-- bland-- I only ate half of it. So, I recommend this place if you happen to be walking by or live right around the corner, but certainly not to seek out. Instead, try one of the many superb bakeries fairly close by, like Green Rabbit. read more

I am reviewing Valhalla Bageriet based solely on their pastries - cinnamon, cardamom buns and wiener bread. The pastries are very good, some of the best you will find in Stockholm. This is an absolute must while visiting Stockholm. Located off the beaten path. Hole in the wall. Only seats about 8 people. They have the best Cardamom twists (Kardemummabulle) in the world! Their baked breads (as in loaf of bread) look like they are from Medieval times.some are so big, but no problem. You can buy a half. Another favorite of mine is the Fyrkant (square) with cheese. It has raisins it. If there is no room to sit dow; bring it to go and walk to the eater by Djurgådsbron and Nobelparken. read more
