Very nice rooms, nice and quiet location, just outside of Cambridge - reachable via bus and a short walk from the bus station. I would definitely stay there again. read more

Had a great breakfast at the Acorn guest house this morning. There were three to choose from: The…read moretraditional English Breakfast, the Continental Breakfast and the Vegetarian Breakfast. The Continental Breakfast is about cereal and cold breakfast items. The Vegetarian, of course is about no meat. The traditional English breakfast (Which I ordered) features an egg sunny side up on a piece of toasted white bread, a sausage link, a couple of pieces of ham, a cooked piece of tomato, sauteed mushrooms and baked beans in a tomato based sauce. White and wheat toast with a variety of jellies and jams, coffee, tea and orange juice also came with the breakfast. Everything was cooked very well. The meats were all a bit salty, as you might expect, but everything was quite good! The dining room is very small and tables are right next to each other. Very cosy. (The price I clicked on below refers to the hotel, which is a very nice - moderately priced three star European hotel. Smallish room with a smallish shower, but super friendly staff)

The End House is a beautiful and tranquil place to stay for your visit to Cambridge. It's in a…read moregreat location, just about a 15 minute walk (partially along the forest path near the River Cam) south of the city center, which also makes it more convenient to walk to Grantchester village if you want to visit the Orchard Tea Gardens (which you should do!). If you are arriving at the Cambridge train station a cab is only about £6 as of 2014 if you don't want to drag your luggage through the forest, which we found out the hard way. Jonathan is a very kind and helpful host, and everything is chosen with great care, from the modern yet functional fixtures, to the clean and unusually large beds compared to other beds we encountered in the UK, to the beautifully handpicked furniture. Jonathan also buys groceries early every morning, so the fresh fruit and local sausage and bacon he serves are outstanding. He also makes perfectly cooked eggs, as well as delicious homemade fruit smoothies! I would definitely stay here again.

As all the B&B was full Duncan offered us one of the apartments. At the end was even better because we could have eaten at home, and going out for drinking.. The apartment was totally amazing: super clean, super modern, very well full furnished with latest distinctive fine design furniture. I appreciated the black marble kitchen top, and the table lamps in the bedroom. Duncan and Emma let us find fresh milk and orange juice in fridge, and some other goods for breakfast, rice, pasta ,etc (I have to admit, I brought my italian coffee and coffee machine from London). Emma has been so nice with us, giving us a map and showing us the way to reach the centre, best things to do, etc. The place is around 15 mins on foot far from the centre, but if you're lazy there is a bus. 5 mins far from the house there are a couple of pub on the river, we've been there on friday evening and there was live rock music with good wine and beer. The price is not very cheap but reasonable for a such well kept apartment and the kindness of the owners. There's also a grocery next to the house open 7am-11pm every day, very useful. Defenitely a place I recommend and where I'll be back if we'll go to Cambridge again.

There is nobody at the hotel to assist you. Luckily another guest arrived at the same time and could help me out. Next issue was that I was locked in my room. The door didn't open from the inside. Again, the hotel hotline had to be called. Luckily, 20min later a helpful person arrived, let me out again and repaired the door. Apart from these surprises, the hotel or better guest house is centrally located and easy to reach and find. It has nicely decorated rooms and in my case also a very nice bathroom with a shower. The lighting good be improved. There is no reading light next to the wing chair, desk or even a bedside lamp, just one at the ceiling. It would also be good to have the option to open the window just a bit instead of wide open for some fresh air, especially in winter. Breakfast is served in the basement and provides a good selection. Everything is nicely decorated, but since it is the basement the room is rather dreary. Strange thing is that nobody seems to be around taking care of the breakfast. That appeared a bit ghost-like. In summary, interesting option in case Cambridge hotels are fully booked, but otherwise I would not book the Regency Hotel again.

Other than that, the place is sort of an expensive dump. When we arrived, we found out that we were to share a bath with two other rooms. The shower in the bath wasn't particularly hot. There is no place to sit down in the guest house other than the hard backed wood chairs in the basement dining area, which is open an hour a day for a breakfast yet to be consumed. There are random mattresses hanging around and other things that lead one to think the guest house is going thru either renovation or deterioration or both simultaneously. The whole place feels a bit dirty. And, to add injury, it's expensive! Cambridge is an incredibly beautiful place and it deserves the flocks of tourists it attracts. So, make your travel plans early and get accommodations that are really worth the price because one suspects that a bunch of them are not.
