This is the local for a good friend of ours, and we visited recently for Sunday Lunch. The pub itself is a Grade II listed building, dating back to at least the 18th century. Located down a short lane to the east of the village, it's a pretty confection of brick on the ground floor and Sussex weatherboarding above. The interior is all exposed beams and stone floors, so it is the genuine article.
The Sunday lunch menu includes a short starter section ((£3.95 - £9.50), a series of roasts, served with crispy roast potatoes, and selection of seasonal vegetables, and gravy. There are children's and vegetarian options, and a short a la carte menu for those not wanting a roast. The latter includes a chilly, veggie burger, haddock & chips, tandoori salmon, quiche Lorraine and Pepperoni Pizza, steak or Cajun spiced grilled chicken.
We had the roast chicken, roast pork with crackling, and the veggie roast. The two meat roasts were very nice, though the vegetable accompaniments were okay rather than outstanding. My vegetarian roast was rather like stuffing - tasty, but soft and untextured. Overall we thought the food offering was 3*. The setting, and friendly and efficient service takes it up to 4*. I'd go back, but maybe choose the halloumi burger or the halloumi skewer as my main. read more
