After 20 plus years of this American never having tried traditional East End seafood…read moredishes--despite my father-in-law raving about it all these years (while other family members not so much)--I looked forward to trying it out at last. Was never against trying it, for the record, just never made time to. I think it was the perfect place to try it for the first time. I tried jellied eel and whelks for the first time. It was definitely not horrible. It was fresh and tasty. I also had a prawn sandwich, also beautifully fresh. Everyone enjoyed their rolls and sandwiches, and side of fries. I was definitely please to see my young child enjoying the whelks as well. Everything seemed reasonably priced. Staff was very friendly and pleasant. We sat "outside", inside a tent, which kept us sheltered from the blustery wind on a mostly cloudy June day, while looking out at the Thames Estuary. I actually don't know if there's an "inside".

Finally getting around to writing this. Was visiting a close friend down in London living in the…read morearea. Was desperately wanting to get some fresh seafood that I normally wouldn't find up north where I could get it right at the waters side. My mate knew exactly where to go to get said seafood and away we went. The place is right on the water and had a good little bar area. When I looked into the cases to see what I wanted I was just amazed at how much they had for the selection. Anything from jellied eels to crawfish tails. I wanted it all but obviously that would be pricy and I wouldn't be able to eat it all. So I chose the famed jellied eels , cockles , octopus and crawfish tails. Im not going to lie I quite enjoyed the jellied eels . Not sure why but I found them quite good and kind of fun working around the bones and spitting them out. The rest of the seafood was really good too. Staff was all quite friendly and my mate, his young daughter and I all quite enjoyed ourselves. I highly recommend this place for the fresh seafood and the prices aren't nearly as bad as you would expect.

Dangerous pieces of shrapnel shoot past my head as I down my fourth oyster. Ptiiiiing…read moreshhhhwwwwtttt. Tfoooooow. I duck and sway. Note to self. Paintball goggles needed next time. It's like the opening scene from Saving Private Ryan. But with crab shell not bullets. Now that's the sort of restaurant I want to dine in. One that isn't a restaurant at all, but a shed. With service at the front and kitchen roll on the table and mahoosive platters being carried out from the kitchen laden with squeaky fresh shellfish and seafood. And each table bursting with people who have totally entered into the spirit of the place, crab cracker in one hand, Bounty Extra absorbent in the other, and for those lucky enough to have three hands, oyster in the other. This is the type of place where three hands are a bonus. Diners are invited to bring their own bread, because The Company Shed doesn't do bread. And you can bring your own alcohol too although they have a lovely selection themselves. The staff are young and energetic and spend their time bringing you more mayonnaise or wiping up after you because you can't help but make a mess when you eat here. It's down and dirty and you may leave with a four inch piece of crab shell embedded in your skull millimetres from your cerebral cortex. But as long as that's not the part of the brain that deals with eating, job's a good 'un. This might not be everybody's cup of tea, although by the size of the queues I'm not sure that's true. If you rock up any time after 12 on a weekend likelihood is you won't get in at all. It's first come first served and after that they put you on a list. They open up at 9am and last service is at 4pm. The Company Shed is situated on Mersea Island. The Island itself isn't much to write home about although a walk along the marsh land is nice and if you're into birds you're in like flynn. But If you're within a hundred miles of The Company Shed, my advice is get yourself down there. Delicious fun.

Luckily my partner noticed that they had started a delivery service to our area. Needless to say she was on the internet with an order of two crab and seafood platters, 6 massive tiger prawns and 6 local oysters for me. It arrived dead on the time that they stated and was so fresh. Every item was delicious, especially the oysters. However, we still look forward to a visit to Mersea and sitting in the Shed. It's unique, in a seafaring way,

We stayed in Whitstable for a few days. A lovely small town. Great location and lots of…read morerestaurants. We looked forward to dine here the first night. We knew there are no reservations, you just wait in line until a table of your liking gets free (inside our outside with a view). We arrived around 7pm and waited for a table outside. It only took about 20mins, which was less than expected. Our Bulldog was welcome as well. Got a table with amazing sunset views. Breathtaking. Sadly the location and the sunset were the only highlights that night. We enjoy fish and seafood. All over the world. Normandy, Scotland, Ireland, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Thailand, Japan. And so on. We've had our share of great and not so great fish and seafood. Sadly the food here belongs to the latter. Visually it was a feast for your eyes. But sadly not for your taste buds. The lobster was pretty small and very dry. Overcooked and overpriced. The oysters just ok, nowhere near irish, french or scottish quality. Not creamy enough. The shrimps were fine. But nothing near great. Best to drown them in the sauce and Mayo that came with The seafood platter was all cold food - but we knew that before ordering, nothing wrong with that. It's just the quality that was missing overall. The salmon was possibly the worst. Low quality, smelly fish. Seasnails were ok, but the small shrimp not. Just tried one. Fries came with the lobster. Soft and soggy. There was also bread and salad. I enjoyed the bread and butter the most of the whole meal. Which is a sad statement. Had some wine with our meal. 20cl mini-bottles of a quality that's best to forget. Staff was very very busy, but ok. And as I said, the views are amazing. But you could grab some take-out food anywhere and sit down somewhere on the Whitstable beach and get the same view. We really wanted to enjoy this place. But quality wasn't there. And the prices for that really way too high. Whitstable is a place to come back to one day. The Lobster Shack isn't.
