My husband and I had lunch at Ropewalk a couple of weeks ago because a friend had given us a gift card there. Being in mid March, we were offered a table close to the bar (away from the windows), so we'd stay warmer --but we couldn't resist the lure of sitting on the high chairs and looking out at the boat traffic, sparse as it was. So we just kept our light jackets on. Once the food and drinks began arriving and the music cranked up a bit, the place easily felt twenty degrees warmer anyway. The food was really good. Fresh, savory, done just right. The waitress was helpful: proactive, attentive, but also gave space. We ate at several other restaurants in Chincoteague that weekend, but this one was by far the best! read more

We visited on a very busy day, so we fully expected a wait. Unfortunately, our pager appears to have been malfunctioning. The staff knew we were next, because we asked where we were in list and they said "next". Our pager never alerted us, they continued seating other parties ahead of us. They also never attempted to call the name our reservation was under, which could have easily resolved the issue. Once we were finally seated, the food took a while to arrive, which was understandable given how busy they were. Unfortunately, the meal itself was disappointing. The side dishes lacked flavor, and both the salmon and flounder were overcooked. The one highlight was the nice playground, which gave the kids something to do while we waited. Overall, the food and service did not meet our expectations and we likely would not return. read more

The atmosphere here was definitely the highlight. Sitting out on the dock with the water views made for a great setting, and having a playground in the sand plus games for the kids was a huge bonus. The drinks were decent too. Unfortunately, the food experience was a little disappointing. They were out of what felt like half the menu, including several seafood items. I figured I'd just order a salad instead, but then they didn't have the dressing I wanted either, so I ended up not eating. The rest of my family thought their meals were just okay--not bad, but nothing that really stood out. Overall, it's a nice spot to relax, especially if you have kids, but the food didn't live up to the location. If we find ourselves back in Chincoteague, we may give it another shot, but it wouldn't be at the top of our list. read more

Our last visit was in March 2025 to which we enjoyed our visit and meals. Things certainly changed between then and July 2026. They were out of several draft and bottled craft beers. We specifically asked for the sauce on the tuna appetizer to be served on the side as it only needs a little. That did not happen. The kicker was the $23 fish & chips. One piece of fish (as shown in the attached picture) that was falling apart, not crispy and somewhat soggy. The waffle fries would have been decent if they hadn't been sitting for an extended period before serving. My wife ordered the same and was better (hot) but still one piece of fish. For a town/region know for fresh fish, this is well below local standard. Our bartender was OK but preferred serving the locals, some of whom were clearly there all day drinking themselves into a stupor. Save your money for betters places while visiting Chincoteague. read more

We went an hour before closing, so maaaaaybe that's why the food was so bad but it was really abysmal. The flounder was way overcooked so much so that I had to fight it with a knife. The green beans were blistered but in a way that made them unpalatable. Breaded shrimp were very heavily breaded. Only real positive I have is the environment is cool, my kids loved the playground, and they had an extensive drink menu. Would not recommend for food, unfortunately. read more

Stumbled upon this place about 3 years ago and had one of the best crab cakes in my life. It was so good that I'm thinking about it years later and had to come and write the review. 100% crab...No filler. I've stopped ordering crab cakes because of the lackluster quality of the crab. But it was absolutely worth it here. Light yet flavorful and juicy. Breading was seasoned and delicious. The rice with it was paired beautifully. And I loveddddd the buttery greens. My husband and I stopped here for lunch on a Saturday in November. Since it was the off season, it was easy to get a table. I was really excited when the bartender was able to make me a mocktail since I'm pregnant and they didn't have any mocktails listed on their drink menu. The bartender was very attentive and friendly the whole duration of our luncheon. My husband got a crab cake sandwich ($26) and I got a grilled chicken sandwich ($16). Both were delicious and flavorful. The restaurant was clean and had ample parking out front. They have a really nice pirate-themed playground for kids that is fenced in. Kids were playing on it when we arrived and looked like they were having a blast! We would eat here again. read more

I'll start with the positive, we had a very friendly waiter and the appetizers were decent. But trust me, it went down hill from there. They brought our appetizers out 3 different times. And then they brought out the food. Four people, four really bland, bad meals. I had the flounder. Horrible. My wife had the mac and cheese w/ crab meat that tasted like a Kraft special. Our son's crab cake was at best of our and that was average at best, and our daughter's scallops were so bad we had to send it back. If you go you probably want to stick to "bar" food. read more

This place was great for a little beach town that doesn't have much. We went on a Saturday night & they told us our wait would be around 55 minutes but we only waited 30. We came to Chincoteague for a lovely couple of days and to see the pony swim on the 101st anniversary. After the pony swim, it was recommended that we go to the Ropewalk restaurant on the water for a wonderful meal, which we did. The service by Kaylee was exceptional. The food was really good. The problem was the restaurant has multiple American flags flying outside. One of the flags is severely tattered. The other one is sliding loose up and down its post and the third one the metal pole has become unsecured from the wooden post it was nailed to and is hanging upside down, almost touching the ground. It was clearly a problem that someone tried to fix with fishing line unsuccessfully. When we sat down the flag was almost touching the ground, I tried to secure it unsuccessfully also. I reported the problem of the flag to my server who told a manager and the manager said he was too busy to deal with it. Before leaving, I watched the flag. It was almost touching the ground, so I took my serving knife cut the fishing line and remove the flag from its wooden post. I roll the flag up on his metal pole and brought it into the restaurant to get to the Manager who again said to the server I was talking to, he was too busy to deal with it. I would not come to this restaurant again, just because of the significant lack of respect to the flag. read more

I came here off-season: just prior to Thanksgiving so that might inform my experience. I liked this place a lot. I had a burger as it was half price Tuesdays along with seasoned waffle fries. I came hungry and it was delicious. The server was attentive and nice. My soda came in a literal pitcher (then you don't need to ask for a refill!) I can see how others would say the indoors could be loud if i was full. It was pretty noisy at only about 25% full when I was there. Ropewalk was close to where I was staying so all-in-all a good choice. read more

I'd definitely come back to Ropewalk, although it is a bit on the pricey side for what they're serving. I started off with the crabcake egg rolls and thought they were amazing - they're the main reason I want to come back. They were $18 for four pieces (two egg rolls cut in half), so the pricing isn't really competitive there, but I really enjoyed them. It was backfin meat or something, but there was a lot of it, and they were served hot and crispy with a tasty remoulade. I got the seafood cobb salad as a main. For $23 it was a little underwhelming. It came with a pile of "lump" crabmeat in the middle as well as six medium sized, cold shrimp, bacon, corn, and some whole cherry tomatoes. I kept forgetting there was crab meat in the salad and for the price there wasn't a ton of shrimp. But it was certainly edible, especially with the blue cheese dressing. I tried the pineapple-orange vinaigrette and that was interesting as well. For dessert I got the Mississippi mud cake which was tasty, but pretty small for $8. My partner got a dozen oysters and enjoyed them. We sat inside and the view of the water was gorgeous. It's the beginning of April and it was packed (we waited about 30 minutes) early Friday night. We sat outside in the sandy area until we were called, which was nice. Service was friendly and fairly prompt. Despite the prices, Ropewalk's got nice service and a great ambiance, so I'm looking forward to coming back and trying something new next time we visit. read more

This place gets some bad reviews. Not sure if it is over-crowded in season. Or whether folks just made poor food choices. But we were very happy here. Beautiful spot right on the water. And conveniently located next to our hotel. Service was good. Wings were good. Rare tuna salad was amazing. Steak and mashed potatoes was good. Kids cheese burger meal totally acceptable. We sat at the outside bar during happy hour and were disappointed by the service. We waited a long time for our food and in between drinks, and at times it honestly felt like we were being ignored. The guy next to us was a regular who asked about my husband's entree as it took about an hour to come out. His oyster appetizer took about 30 minutes when asked for more crackers the bartender said okay I have a box right here,15 minutes later I asked a lady behind the bar for them as the bartender totally forgot. What really stood out to me was something very unusual and questionable that I saw behind the bar. The bartender took a completely empty vodka bottle and what appeared to be a full vodka bottle to the corner of the bar. He poured about 3/4 of the full bottle into the empty bottle, put the spout on, and then started pouring drinks. In Maryland, that would be a liquor board violation, and it definitely looked shady. I'm a lightweight, and after two crushes I usually feel relaxed. During this visit, I had five crushes over about 90 minutes and felt like I was drinking water. For a 150-pound female who doesn't drink much, that was extremely suspicious. It really made me feel like they water down their alcohol. Between the slow service, being ignored, and what I saw at the bar, I would not recommend this place for drinks. If you want good drinks, go somewhere else. read more

We happened to be in town for Valentine's Day, and decided to check out the place as it was next door to our hotel. We were greeted by very friendly service at the hostess station and lead to our table by the windows. Restaurant had a very bustling atmosphere, very good vibe. Excellent decor, with art / decor reflecting on the seafood, area, etc. Spotless. Appetizer - smoked (then fried) chicken wings with old bay seasoning - these were amazing, well seasoned, good flavor, tender / fall apart. Dinner - My wife had the jerk chicken (well seasoned, juicy), I had the crab cake (delicious, well seasoned). Both dishes were accompanied by fresh green beans (excellent sautéed) and island rice (pretty good). Dessert was lava cake, which was just ok. Cocktails - excellent. Will try a slush next time. Water served in mini beer pitchers was pretty fun. Our waitress - excellent. Attentive, efficient and friendly. All in all - we enjoyed our experience. if you're looking for a bar grill type place with a variety of things (including non-seafood items) and great cocktails, this is a place to try. If you've looking for a more traditional seafood place, there are other choices in town. read more

Our party of two came here on a Saturday evening just before 8 PM without a reservation. We were able to be seated immediately at a high top and our drink orders were taken immediately. The key lime crush was a huge hit and the fact that the fountain soda/waters came in a personal pitcher was fantastic especially on a hot day. It was a little uncomfortably warm inside since the doors to the outdoor area were open, but we survived. The crab cake eggrolls were incredibly flavorful, the bada bing shrimp was a crowd pleaser (but nothing to write home about), the jerk spice seasoned wings were nice and crispy, the chicken tenders also scratched that itch for my kid's menu hankering, and the crab cake sandwich was delicious and the crispy waffle fries it came with were amazing. I had two kids with me (5 and 1), along with a stroller and they thought the best table to give me was one smack dab in the middle near the bar. So that wasn't super comfortable. Initially sat bar table for happy hour. Ordered nothing at table. Within 10 minutes seats opened up at bar and we move. Ordered two Key Lime crushes, took 15 minutes and were a 4/5. Then ordered wings app BBQ, after 25 minutes we asked about wings, were told they were taken to table were at originall. Waited 20 minutes for new order. Something must have happened to this location in the past few months and not in a good way. I have had similar experience as some of the reviews before me.... My husband and I had lunch after arriving to the Island. We were seated upstairs with beautiful views of the water. I wish I could say that we enjoyed the rest of the experience. The waiter was friendly but not attentive. He was gone for 15-20 minutes before our order was even taken. Took another 20 or so for him to come back for the check. Regarding the food - The orange crush tasted like watered down OJ. I ordered the Banda Bing Shrimp App ($15) - I have to say it was probably the worst I have had anywhere. Obv had to be frozen, tasteless and so much batter on the shrimp, which were the size of half of my pinky finger. I had to peel the batter off to find the shrimp. My husband ordered the fish and chips. That was like the previous review, a slab of fish deep fried to dark brown and just eh. I wish I could say that I enjoyed the view and drink enough to compensate but sadly it was not worth it. One good side, the oysters were good - but how can you really screw up an oyster when it comes out of your waters. Also to note, there were two employees who were throwing boxes into the storage closet and laughing about it. For a good 20 minutes, with the door open and continued stocking the storage room by throwing large boxes in haphazardly. If the organizational structure of this restaurant looked anything like that storage closet that tells me everything. Don't waste your time or money here. Plenty of other nice places to eat. I do hope management is reviewing the comments and taking these complaints into consideration for improvement. read more

Each of my experiences at Ropewalk has been good, but not quite great. The food is good and they have different options than most of the other seafood focused restaurants on the island. The Tiki and other mixed drinks are nice too and tend to be well-made. And I like the ample outdoor seating and musicians. I do find the portions a bit small, though, and I think you can find better value elsewhere. read more

We did have great waterfront viewing and sunset views. There was ample staff and the pacing was great. My kids liked drinking out of the small pitchers. The promotional kids meal with frisbee was very much appreciated. I liked the locally themed posters , murals, and oyster cans.
