It's great because I was able to choose my own BBQ sauce and I could add as much as I wanted. Also had the cheeseburger with French fries. I recommend getting the seasoning on the fries. The wife and I were excited to try a new BBQ joint out, even if it was a little bit of a drive for us. The restaurant is really nice and in a good location, very inviting to come into. My wife ordered an app (BBQ egg rolls) and thought they were decent. For dinner, she ordered the pulled pork tacos with a side of Mac n Cheese and I ordered a "Fancy Burger" (cooked medium) with a side of seasoned fries. We also ordered a half slab of ribs to share. Overall, we thought the apps and sides were decent, but the entrees not so much. My burger (medium) came out char-grilled well done with grey colored meat on the inside. If the waitress would have asked me how it was, I would have asked for a new one...but she never did. The pulled pork in the tacos was bland and lacked that Smokey flavor that a good smoked butt should have. The ribs weren't that great either...to me they tasted overdone but my wife made the observation that it tasted like it had been sitting around all day in a steamer, and I think she was right. Also, couldn't get any beer here...only Pepsi products...blah. This place is fairly new and it obviously has some work to do. In terms of location and quality this place rules. I was SO impressed by the food. Mac and Cheese was oooey gooey and they had several sauces that you could use to bring it to the next level (spicy BBQ!!). I only got the size but it was only $4!!! Wow. Decor is casual and inviting, great setup for community dining. I have been here 4 times and service is great to barely there. Food is good, not great not bad. Brisket is overdone for my liking, it is borderline pulled. The pork fair flavor and moist, chicken was dry. Sides are somewhat bland, and the sauces are average. Been waiting for a half hour for food with no waitress in site. I want so bad for this place to be successful but I'm fearful it won't be at this pace. We were driving past, as we have many times. Looking for something new and tasty we gave it a try. So the hostess, who was very nice and extremely welcoming, upon establishing we were first time visitors, seated us and said our server would let us know about the menu. Well, she indeed pointed us to fan favorites as well as hers and a few pointers as well. I am always impressed when a server knows the menu and can speak of what is good versus being ambivalent. The nachos were as promised insane! Somehow the chips in that (half order by the way) pile of pulled pork and deliciously fresh ingredients were still very crispy to dig into the heap and carve out the good stuff. We tried but could not make a huge dent before the three meat platter came. The Brisket was so good. Juicy, smoky and well cooked. The pulled pork was a close 2nd. While tasty, the pulled chicken was not as exceptional. The sides, broccoli was crisp and flavorful and the redskins were also just as good. If there was a down side, the sauces were average at best, nothing special. I am still a solid 5 stars though based upon the very nice settings, and equally awesome staff and delicious and really over plentiful food. We will be stopping by on our next trip through Almont. (please work on the sauces, and I might have to start driving the 30 miles just to eat here.) read more

Awesome new barbecue restaurant. The owner is awesome and went around to talk to every table to make sure they were satisfied. Has your basic sandwiches, some small salads and some normal entrees such as fish n chips. I'd recommend the Fancy Burger or the Fancy Clucker (a chicken sandwich). The potato soup was also incredible, but very filling. The biggest downfall is that they don't have a liquor license. However, the owner told me and my mother that they are in the process of getting one, and they SHOULD have one soon. Awesome place and worth stopping by. Good for big or small groups. read more

This place was great. This place use to be a nice little Coney Island, but then it closed and sat vacant for at least ten years. It's been open for a few months now. I really hope they make it. They put a lot of hard work into the building. This place is just what Almont needs.. They don't serve alcohol, but that's no big deal. The food is great, & the wait staff is fast, & helpful.. Roots isn't open on Sunday. I hope that changes. With football season coming, it would be a nice place to go in November on a Sunday afternoon. We had a carry out order of a full slab of ribs, spicy shrimp appetizer, and Notchos Roots (smoked pork nachos.) appetizer. Ribs were tender and tasted great. Shrimp was just the right spicy but came with cole slaw instead of onion slaw listed on menu. Had enough nachos for 2 dinners. A little pricey (almost $50) but good. We'll go back. First, we are glad there is a new restaurant in Almont and want to see it succeed. My daughter ordered a hamburger and it was very good. My wife ordered the beef brisket, cole slaw and redskin potato salad. She like the meat, but the sides were bland. I ordered 2 meats, beans and garlic potatoes. Paid extra for the 2 meats. However, the portions of each meat were smaller than my wife's 1 meat portion. The Beef was good. The turkey and beans needed the sauce. We found it odd we had to ask for barbecue sauce and when they brought it it came in a shot size container. We met friends last night for dinner at Roots. I ordered the pulled pork with 2 sides (coleslaw and broccoli) The pork was delicious tender and bits of crisp, large portion...just perfect! There were 3 options for the bbq sauce which you add yourself (original, sweet and spicy) I really liked the spicy! Lots of flavor... The coleslaw was crunchy and fresh. My husband got the fancy burger and really enjoyed it. The decor was super cute and they really did a good job transforming the place. Our waitress was fast and attentive, our food came quick. To top off the good service the owner even came over and introduced herself, I just loved that. That is the kind of hospitality that you would expect in a small town like Almont! What a gem! If you are a fan of smoked meats or amazing flavor combinations, you need to stop in to Roots. I have dined with them twice and both times have been wonderful! The portions are extremely generous and the depth of flavor is a treat to the taste buds!
