My mom lives in Almont and I recently stopped at Roots to get a quick carry out late lunch while on my way home from her house. I just got a side salad and was impressed by the quality - the lettuce was crisp and I loved the dressing. So when my husband and I were going to my mom's house to do some work while she was away, I did not hesitate to recommend Roots. I got a shrimp po'boy and he got a pulled pork sandwich. He felt the sandwich was a little dry, not much sauce but it had a lot of flavor (we got carry out so we couldn't really ask for sauce after the fact and it was the first time we had anything there other than that side salad). I did see other sandwiches saying the meat was smoked so maybe that was more like what the pork was vs a saucy pulled pork. We both really enjoyed the fries. My shrimp po'boy as very good - I am used to po'boy being on the spicy (Cajun) side and having to ask to have them reduce the heat level but this was not the least bit spicy at all as originally made. Everything about it was good and I would order it again! Btw - when I was picking up my side salad to go, I did see they have monthly specials. If I was not in a rush to get home, I would have ordered the smoked meatloaf. Hope to see that on the specials menu again. read more

What a thoroughly enjoyable experience. I love restaurants that open in older spaces like this. I would love to know what this space was originally used for, if I had to guess it was probably a general store at some point. The booths are nice and deep, with seating for at least eight people. My group of five was able to spread out and be comfortable. Our server was very kind, and was patient with my autistic son. The first course was the butternut squash soup. I've never had it prepared this way, I believe they mixed in some high-quality maple syrup as a sweetener, it worked beautifully and was delicious from first spoonful to last. I ordered the fancy burger for my entrée, and while I had to peel the tomato and lettuce off of it, the balance of the sandwich was perfect. Nice and juicy with crispy delicious bacon. My wife and son split an order of ribs and they looked delicious also. I found it wonderful that they had homemade ranch to accompany my tater tots, I'm such a kid lol. Located at the nexsus of downtown Almont. Place of awful traffic going North in Van Dyke is roots. We have passed this place so many times and finally decided to stop in- it was Friday afternoon around 3:00 PM. The space has bar, table seating and extra large booths. Beware the booths are so big I predict you can fit 8-10 people great for a large party. Booths are also so big that my feet didn't touch the ground and it was hard to get in and out. Good we tried the "clucker" a grilled chicken and bacon sandwich with a side of Mac n cheese, pretzel sticks, loaded tots and the chopped salad. This was WAY too much food for two people. However, pretzels were good, the gooey bar cheese stole the show on the tater tots, chopped salad also good (nice touch with the thin fried onions) and the Mac and cheese was loved! Seriously that bar cheese is gooey and good. We didn't get any BBQ to try. But I like what they are doing and will totally be back! And those tots were amazing- I though I was dining light tots and a salad but no- still had to pack it up. The service was fantastic!! I met a friend from out of town here as I had been wanting to try this place for some time. We ordered Spinach Artichoke dip as an app, she had the French Dip Sandwich and I had the Smoked Chic Penne Cajun pasta. We both had cocktails. The Spinach Artichoke Dip was mostly cheese with some spinach and artichokes. Having worked at an Italian cafe, I found the dip to be disappointing. Chips were bland with no salt. The chicken pasta dish was boring. Chicken was dry, no spice at all, in fact it tasted like a weak Alfredo at best. Needed garlic, cayenne and pepper. Cajun should be spicy. We were one of just a few tables so service was good. Ambience and atmosphere were also good, drinks were small but adequately priced. We had lunch here one afternoon and had the best experience. Our waitress was super knowledgeable and recommended so many great things. The food was excellent. Highlights included the pulled pork nachos, brisket and baked beans. The turkey and Mac and Cheese was also really well done. Meh, that's how I feel about our experience here. We stopped in on a Thursday evening for dinner. The hostest seemed annoyed to seat us, sorry for bothering you. Sigh. We were seated at a table directly across from the kitchen window. It was so hard to have a conversation because the guys in the kitchen were blasting and singing to hip hop music. Now, I love me some hip hop and can appreciate the desire to have fun while working, but when you have an open kitchen like that, you do need to be mindful of your volume and throwing f bombs in front of customers. Our server was nice enough and was prompt. We ordered a burger and the 1 meat entree with the pulled chicken, side salad and honey carrots. The chicken was not pulled chicken, it was big old chopped hunks, like someone was too lazy to actually pull it. The carrots were also huge and only tasted of butter not honey. Pleasantly surprised to find a good restaurant on my way back downstate from Port Austin. We had really nice service from Kathryn I think was her name. We had BBC pulled pork platter, a few kids meals, and a fish and chips lunch special. Everything was good and we enjoyed the large booth with our kids. After spending the day at Stoney Creek with my sisters and nephew we decided to stop at Roots. The atmosphere was casual and relaxing. The food was delicious. My sister and her grandson had smoke meat platters, my other sister fish and chips, and I had the Pork 3.0. We got so much food we all ended up taking most of our meals. Our server, Shelby, was the best. She was sweet and funny and her service was outstanding. Beautiful end to a beautiful day. read more

Cute and cozy place located right in the town of almont. Small little bar to sit at while waiting. Started with some drinks at the bar and were seated within 10 minutes. The booths are very large which is nice but the cushions awkward and makes for uncomfortable seating. Ordered a nacho appetizer that was outstanding. The entrees ordered were really good as well . Brisket was on point. Mac and cheese and beans are pretty tasty as well. Onto the negatives the sauce selection was not very good. They are all ketchup based and tasted just like ketchup couldn't tell the difference between the ketchup and the sauce with the exception of the spicy one that was a spicy ketchup based sauce. Had I not sat at the bar wouldn't have noticed all the bare hand food touching and the cook also snacking. I ordered a salmon dinner carryout on 8/25 and immediately noticed two things when I opened the container (1) the salmon was placed on top of the potatoes and broccoli and (2) one side of the salmon was all white like it had already been scrapped off and recooked? I do not know, but I had a bad feeling I had someone's rejected dinner thrown into a container. THEN I see the large amount of nasty juices that the rest of the food was in and that was it for me! I pitched the entire $$$ dinner. You don't place fish on top of other food in a container that turns everything into swamp soup. So lucky that I don't live around the corner because if I did I would have asked whoever prepared this if they would like to take a whiff and then have a BIG bite of what they so "lovingly" prepared for a customer. Nice place, good service, lousy food ! This is our third visit, the first two were pre-Covid and we were not impressed at all but after talking to some friends recently how Roots has gotten so much better we decided to give them a try again. I have to say, Much Worse than I remember. Brisket tasted okay, a bit heavy on smoke but very dry. The pulled pork was disgusting, very Smokey (and I like smoke) also very greasy. Meat is Not pulled but shredded fine, I believe they leave the shredded meat sit in its drippings thinking this adds moisture and flavor but the drippings are all fat making it not only greasy but mushy too ! Tasted like a cheap pre packaged product from a grocery store and Not freshly made. Their sauces are nothing but ketchup with a pinch of other flavorings. There were four bottles on the table, ketchup, sweet, spicy and regular sauce and they all tasted like ketchup. For comparison I squeezed a dollop of each side by side and they all looked exactly the same. Their baked beans tasted identical to a can of Bush's baked beans, nothing special at all. Prices are high, taste is low. This is Roots third strike for us...we are Out ! read more

First time here and it was a score! Tiffany our server was awesome & her advice was spot on! Prices were very reasonable and best of all the food was good! I had the fancy burger (light on the sauce) & my nephew had the spicy burger. Both were great! For appetizers the Notcho Roots were killer & the BBQ egg rolls were good also! They were a meal by themselves. The only thing that they need to make it a 5 star is beer (which we were told is coming), more tv's at different angles, and please bump the heat up a degree or 2. This is a semi regular place for us and it's gotten much more popular since they got their beer and wine license. I love the brisket and turkey here!! All their bbq is good but those are my two Goto meats. All the sides are really good and so is their salad if someone in your party isn't looking to be overly carnivorous that day. Service is always very friendly and it's usually easy to get a table most nights. Overall a great place that's convenient and worth your dining dollars! Oh yeah. Been here three or four times and have enjoyed every meal. Had the pulled pork with macaroni and cheese dinner a couple times. It's great because I was able to choose my own BBQ sauce and I could add as much as I wanted. Also had the cheeseburger with French fries. I recommend getting the seasoning on the fries.
