Lynn Fosbender was so helpful in helping me--a first time plant owner--pick out my plants and a pot. I'll definitely return.

This is quite an extensive park! We met a group of friends here for one of their periodic bat…read morewalks, which I think was a program of the Friends of Kilbourn Park. They do have a good sized field house here, with programming for a variety of age ranges, so it's worth checking out the CPD activities schedule. There's lots of green space, but also baseball fields, tennis courts, and a nice sized playground. The playground, too, serves a nice range of ages. But what I liked most about this park was the greenhouse and outdoor natural play area. There are places for kids to sit for various activities that take place here, an outdoor kitchen, and a large greenhouse. It's called a "teaching greenhouse", and is unique amongst Chicago parks (at least as of 2026). There's a program called garden buddies aimed at toddlers and I wish I lived closer to be able to have my child participate in it! There's also a plant sale each year. If all that weren't enough, an orchard--the first in a major metropolitan city in the US!--was planted in 2008. Apples, pears, and more--including the paw paw, an unusual, native Illinois fruit--grow on these trees. Currants, berries, and more have also been planted here. I'm excited to keep an eye on their events.

The Greenhouse is open to the public and they do have a staff in duty if there's any questions…read moreabout the garden. They have a selection of plans and flowers. Next to it they have this beautiful park for the kids to play in the playground. Also they have tennis courts and you can improvise and play pickleball as well. Definitely a great value of time to keep this garden beautiful.

I cannot say enough good things about Fertile Garden Center! From the moment I walked in, the staff…read morewere incredibly knowledgeable and friendly, exactly what you want when you're trying to figure out the right plants for your space. Darrel in particular went above and beyond. I was looking for flowers and plants for my balcony, and he took the time to walk me through everything: which plants would be safe for my dog (non-toxic was a must!), what would actually thrive given my balcony's sun exposure, and which options would be low-maintenance when it comes to bugs. It honestly felt like a mini plant class, and I left feeling so much more confident about what I was buying. On top of that, I brought in my orchid that I genuinely thought was a goner. Darrel and the team took a look at it that same day and managed to revive it! I was shocked and so grateful. After years of buying plants from the big box stores, I'm never going back. Fertile Garden Center actually cares about helping you succeed with your plants, not just making a sale. Highly recommend, and I'll definitely be coming back. And the speak Spanish!!

I like coming here for the selection and to support a small business instead of big box store. But…read moreI have to agree with other reviewers, the staff here can be off putting. Anytime I ask questions they just repeat what's on the care tag. They don't seem passionate about gardening and make the whole interaction uncomfortable.

This plant shop was suggested to me by a coworker with whom I share a love of houseplants. From…read morewhat I understand from her, they started selling plants via Instagram and then branched out to their own shop? And I think it's woman-owned, which is definitely something I want to support! This shop is located in Jeff Park, and I missed it when I visited the first time; it's right on the corner of Lawrence & Milwaukee. Parking may not be obvious if you're not around here often, and there isn't parking on Milwaukee this far north. It's about a block from the library and the ACTUAL Jefferson Park, and a block or two from the Copernicus Center in the other direction, so there is some parking but it's probably all pay to park (at least across from the library on Lawrence it was). So you should be able to find a place to park in the surrounding streets. The women working--the owner/s I think?--said hello but weren't overbearing. They offered help if I needed which I appreciated. They were knowledgeable, which you'd think would be a given but doesn't always seem to be when I've visited other plant shops. They were answering a customer's question about a monstera plant that they have in the window, teaching him that the particular plant he was admiring was several hundred dollars because it's a rare one, with a stable mutation; on the other hand, also monsteras do not have a stable mutation and thus their variegated color can shift to a solid green. That was fascinating to learn about (since I was dropping eaves, obviously)! It also taught me to be wary of an expensive albo monstera since this seems like something that scammers would try to sell unsuspecting plant parents. They have some of the plants you'll find at a lot of places, and they're in great health! They also had some carnivorous plants. Plant-related merchandise was also on sale, including accessories like decorative plant stakes (love!), or plant critters to sit with or on your plants, that sort of thing. Pots, of course. They also sell things like face masks, plant-based skincare, and the like. The store is very large and not at all crowded. I'm not sure if they're still finding their footing with regards to arranging their store or not. And they have an awesome plant swap area--a little take-a-cutting/leave-a-cutting shelf. They have a couple of chairs too so folks can relax in the jungle here!
