Such a huge range of plants that all looked so healthy! Many of them very reasonably priced, I ended up getting a beautiful ghost cactus. This plant shop was suggested to me by a coworker with whom I share a love of houseplants. From what I understand from her, they started selling plants via Instagram and then branched out to their own shop? And I think it's woman-owned, which is definitely something I want to support! This shop is located in Jeff Park, and I missed it when I visited the first time; it's right on the corner of Lawrence & Milwaukee. Parking may not be obvious if you're not around here often, and there isn't parking on Milwaukee this far north. It's about a block from the library and the ACTUAL Jefferson Park, and a block or two from the Copernicus Center in the other direction, so there is some parking but it's probably all pay to park (at least across from the library on Lawrence it was). So you should be able to find a place to park in the surrounding streets. The women working--the owner/s I think?--said hello but weren't overbearing. They offered help if I needed which I appreciated. They were knowledgeable, which you'd think would be a given but doesn't always seem to be when I've visited other plant shops. They were answering a customer's question about a monstera plant that they have in the window, teaching him that the particular plant he was admiring was several hundred dollars because it's a rare one, with a stable mutation; on the other hand, also monsteras do not have a stable mutation and thus their variegated color can shift to a solid green. That was fascinating to learn about (since I was dropping eaves, obviously)! It also taught me to be wary of an expensive albo monstera since this seems like something that scammers would try to sell unsuspecting plant parents. They have some of the plants you'll find at a lot of places, and they're in great health! They also had some carnivorous plants. Plant-related merchandise was also on sale, including accessories like decorative plant stakes (love!), or plant critters to sit with or on your plants, that sort of thing. Pots, of course. They also sell things like face masks, plant-based skincare, and the like. The store is very large and not at all crowded. I'm not sure if they're still finding their footing with regards to arranging their store or not. And they have an awesome plant swap area--a little take-a-cutting/leave-a-cutting shelf. They have a couple of chairs too so folks can relax in the jungle here! read more

I was drawn to go inside by the plants in the windows. I am a plant lover and love supporting small businesses as I grew up in a family that had a small home decor/furniture/gift store. This place has promise, but is too empty and needs to be fuller to be more fun to shop and it needs more plant variety. It didn't feel humid enough and I worried about buying a plant because I was dodging bugs that were flying around. But, it has promise so I will go back at some point. read more

Something about this place is inviting before you enter. The shop has light streaming in from multiple directions. The store owner was a delight, warm and personable. They have a nice variety of plants just sitting out for you to observe. The price was competitive, I've seen cheaper. I would return here and plan to come back. Came in looking for a farewell gift for my awesome boss. The owner actually responds to questions you ask on instagram. She was one of 2 people who answered me when i was asking around online the day before i went. The day i came she had a lot of air plants and i saw a couple pink princesses too and whale fins. And she has succulents as well, chillin by the windows. The other staff with her came to me asking if i needed anything. And the owner tries to answer customer questions like "what should i get her etc" and she shared knowledge with me when i asked on IG re: the air plant i got because i realized it had a bloom and it opened minutes after i left. She also supports local businesses by selling little knick knacks as plant decor or home accessories like a hanging diffuser. I've never seen one of those. She also sells small disco balls wrapped in macrame hangers. I would go there again. read more

Great little shop to stop in and get your plant on. I'm just starting out and there was no judgment here. I needed to know two things - what is cat safe and what is not easy to kill. Ann pointed out what would work, let me down gently when I'd ask about something that wasn't cat friendly, and answered all my other newbie questions. After deciding on the perfect plant I even grabbed a planter since they had such a great selection (animals, pastel colors, shiny things, everything!). Overall, the hubs and I had a ton of fun browsing, and shockingly, my plant is still alive and doing well! Total win. read more

Finally a store that caters to what is trending! I had been on the hunt for a Scindapsus Exotica, and Ann at Sunnyside Plants was the one who delivered! The shop is truly a hidden gem. I went in for one plant, and left with five solely because she had so many on my plant wishlist! She had many sizes for the same plant, which gave me plenty of options. I came in fairly close to closing time, and she was so nice about me taking my time to look. I did not feel rushed at all. Just overall a great experience. I just picked up a few plants and pots from Sunnyside Plants. I had read reviews that Ann was very helpful and extremely knowledgeable. Those reviews were completely accurate. Ann listened to what light conditions I was working with and gave me plenty of recommendations. I came in with an idea of what I wanted. Ann helped me find those plants and also showed me alternatives with similar qualities. She is completely honest about which plants may be best to buy elsewhere since the economics of certain plants are a little funky, which is not necessary at all, but it was appreciated. We should be set for a little while with the plants I purchased, but I will definitely be making occasional trips with my wife to see if there are any fun plants we want to pick up on a whim. read more

It's great to walk into a shop and see only plants grouped together and organized by type, size, and light requirements without any other distractions. I've never seen such a bare bones plant shop organized almost like a clothing store! It makes shopping for a plant very easy. The staff are really knowledgable and helpful. The prices are affordable--each plant is tagged so you don't have to ask for the price. The best part about this shop is that if you really want a rare plant that is cost-prohibitive, you can still find a smaller more beat-up version of the same plant for cheap. It will grow! read more

Sunnyside Plants is my go-to plant shop in what seems to be an endless landscape of "new" plant shops across Chicago. This female-owned business constantly gets new inventory, several times a week, at super reasonable and fair prices. I love that she stocks everything from starter plants to full-size mature beauties of the same variety so you can shop at your own price range. Ann has an incredible social media presence & you can literally reach out to her anytime to ask your panicked questions about your new plant babies. She is super quick to respond & super generous with her advice. My favorite part of shopping at Sunnyside is the excitement on Ann's face when she sees what I've picked out as she shares some anecdote or bit of advice about the plant I'm about to bring home. I drive almost 20 minutes to visit Sunnyside & parking is not the easiest, but this plant shop is definitely worth it and should be on your list! read more
