Root beer Shangri-la! I've always loved root beer but have never had access to most of the craft-type brands that I see discussed online. My local groceries carry Sprecher and not much else. Then lo and behold, I was walking down the street in Galena and there it was. I abandoned my wife and kids and eagerly entered. Besides carrying dozens of varieties of indie root beer (and many other flavored sodas), they also offer several on draft. Draft root beer! My god, what a luxury. An owner/manager type offered me a couple of samples. Ten minutes of browsing yielded two make-your-own six-packs, none of which I had ever tried. They weren't all home runs, but I found a few new favorites. Now I may need to plan a quarterly Galena root beer run to stock up. read more

Any time I come to Galena I stop in this specialty shop, catering to root beer enthusiasts! You might not be able to make this sort of store work just anywhere, but on the main drag in the touristy area of Galena, it's been successful for over a decade. Needless to say, if you like root beer, you'll find lots to try here! They also sell other craft soda pops as well. Being in the crowded touristy area has its drawbacks, of course: we happened to be there on the day that scouts had taken over Galena for some purpose, and there was also some Civil War event happening as well, so you could barely move in this shop! Obviously, come in the off season and it will be much less crowded. read more

While exploring main street in Galena with a friend we came across a shop called Root Beer Revelry. I had to stop in. There was root beer everywhere! Aisle after aisle of root beer. I have never seen so many varieties. It also made me a bit excited to know there were others in the world that really liked root beer like I did. My friend graciously humored me although I don't think she quite understood the obsession. We got our root beers (two brands I have never tried) and enjoyed them. I once kinda sorta fancied myself becoming a root beer connoisseur (this is real and embarrassing). I don't really like much pop and their I do like aren't caffeinated so it would be logical right? Anyway, I love root beer. I bought about 10 bottles of root beer of different flavors for us to share and that is more pop than I have had in two and a half years, how weird. They have a few types of root beer on tap, and then the rest are in bottles. You'll also find some things like green river or whatnot, and there are several types of cream soda too. They offer a root beer flight, so I had one of those. I think the Baumeister and the Princess Potosa were my favorite from the tap. One or two were not as full bodied, for lack of a better term, and Sprrcher I've had many times so that was nothing new. My favorite of their offerings was naturally their root beer float. They were really good and used the root beer of your choice from the tap. The ice cream they used was high quality vanilla as well. It was a nice cool treat during a hot weekend in Galena! read more

It is not a very clean store with boxes scattered across the floor. The older gentleman (I think the owner) was helpful and asked if we had any questions. Shortly, he left, and the two workers stated to each other that he bothers them and the store pays the lowest of any store in Galena. I picked out some root beers and did a root beer flight. It was fun, but no information given on the different root beers. I enjoyed tasting and comparing the different brands of root beer. When I went to cash out, the worker was talking to someone on FaceTime with her feet on the counter and acted like she didn't want to be interrupted. Galena is a beautiful little town and Root Beer Revelry is a microcosm of the quaint area. The root beer on tap was fantastic and there is always a good selection. The problem was that I bought four bottles from the room temperature shelves, and all four had the expiration dates scrubbed off, either from the sticker or from the bottle itself. I'm worried that the staff are purposely selling expired product and covering it up by scrubbing off the expiration dates. I would recommend sticking to the root beer on tap or at least making sure you buy bottles with visible expiration dates! read more

The store isn't huge, but the do have the largest selection of root beer and craft sodas I've seen in one place. If anyone knows any others, please let me know! I stopped into their shop on Thursday to pick up some different drinks for the weekend. You can create your own six pack and that is exactly what I did. They had a large selection and it was hard to narrow it down. I figured I'll just pick up different ones the next time I go. They did carry some major brands, I guess they do have to cater to those that just want the same ol' stuff, just like liquor stores do. They have a cooler filled with chilled selections too so you can grab one to go if you'd like, and I did. There is also a root beer bar where you can get some craft root beers on tap and they make some great root beer floats! I'd highly recommend them. You can mix and match bottles for purchase. Kind off expensive at $2.25 a bottle, but you can get a dozen for the price of about 10 (24 dollarsish) basically, buy 12, get 2 free. It was really hard to pick out just twelve because there are so many to choose from. I was let down when I got home and found that one of the bottles I bought was the brand sold at Applebee's. The name itself stood out and we were curious as to what exactly did the shop have to offer. I really like this place. I really appreciate it when someone is just really outgoing and an evangelist for what they beleive in. It almost doesn't matter what it is - their enthusiasm is contagious and you get to learn about history and the world from a different perspective. In this case the owner loves rootbeer. You can learn just about anything you want about rootbeer. I learned why 1919 rootbeer has that name and how it relates to WWI, flying biplanes, and post-war economy. FROM A ROOTBEER. The owner, who's name I did not get, is just exhuberant and passionate, fun, and interesting. He is a natural conversationist, interesting without being the kind of person you start looking for an escape route from. So there is lots of root beer bottle both local and speciality that you can but, you can get a delicious one poured from the tap, and you can have a freshly made rootbeer float. This place is great: the owner is full of interesting stories and funny jokes. Make sure you strike up a conversation with him. When I was there, they had three root beers on tap that you could taste, all with very different tastes and varying levels of complexity. I recommend sampling them before making a decision. The root beer floats are great! They are made with the chilled fresh root beer that is tapped. The root beer crystallizes with the ice cream and it is so pleasant to sit there for a few moments, your only concern being scraping each sugary, frosty layer from the top of the ice cream mound. There is something about a root beer float that is incredibly satisfying, soothing, and reminiscent of a childhood summer night. I highly recommend them. They are open a bit later than many of the stores on the street, which is a smart business move. People aren't ready to go home or stop shopping for the day, and probably would enjoy a place to stop and relax. This is the perfect pitstop! The ONLY reason I am not giving it 5 stars is because I believe the root beer selection could be expanded a bit. The store didn't stock a well-known and highly rated root beer for which I was searching; I would have assumed that this brand would be fairly standard in a specialty root beer shop. After circling Galena for an hour and 20 minutes we finally found a parking spot. My five-year-old twins were excited to see root beer revelry. Unfortunately to our dismay, the woman in charge would sell a root beer float to one twin but refused to sell a cup of ice cream to the other twin who doesn't drink soda. Seriously? His knowledge of the town and the stories behind each type of root beer he sells is seemingly endless. I walked in with my 12 year old son, a root beer aficionado, and ended up in the shop for almost an hour listening to stories and putting together pick and packs of root beer. This is a great idea but the execution needs some work. The staff is not helpful or friendly at all. We asked what kind they recommended and when they gave us a recommendation the lady helping us said it was out (after she poured half a glass) she then tried to find a replacement tank but said "I don't even know how to get this out of here" and told us to pick something else. How did she not know how to serve root beer in a root beer shop? She then dumped the half glass of root beer (why?) and poured our second choice. No apology. We did buy a 6 pack, they were all pretty average. Such a bizarre experience, we'll stick to microbrewery root beer close to us from now on. read more

They have shelves holding six packs of root beer brewed all over the country (though I was sad to see they don't carry Brigham's Brew from Utah) and also carry several selections on tap, with options to get a regular 20 or 32 ounce glass or a root beer float. Great little place to stop in while walking around downtown Galena. I saw this place on yelp before we arrived and I knew there was no way we were going to miss out on a store devoted entirely to root beer. We took a break to enjoy our root beer floats in the store. There isn't much of a seating area but there are two little tables near the front you can sit at. The rootbeer float was perfect. Just what you want on a hot summer day. When I heard there was a store dedicated to root beer I expected something natural and homemade or unique.
