This Christmas marks my 10th year with my best friend by my side, and I wanted to make my husband feel as special as he made me feel that first Christmas when he gifted me the most beautiful heart necklace - the first "real" piece of jewelry any guy had ever given. So after some thought, and some great recommendations from friends, I landed on Roosevelts Terrariums in Downtown Portland - the supposedly largest Terrarium shop in the world! Learning the history behind Terrariums, how they've helped decrease the cost of tea among other items, and how they once were a great center piece of 1800's households was the perfect start to an incredibly fun class! Corey picked his favorite Jar, filled the bottom with about an inch of lava rock, several inches of dirt, and meticulously chose and planted every plant, rock, glass, and soapstone sculpture (which Scarlett picked out for her Papa when we visted the Sea Lion caves last month) creating a diverse little ecosystem. He was also able to use the little mushroom figurine he made in a glassblowing coarse last year! Now this way, no matter where our paths might lead us, we will always have a little piece of the PNW in our hearts and home - Merry Christmas baby, I love you so much! I've been wanting to do a terrarium class for a long time and recently paid the big bucks to make it happen! The class starts with an overview of terrariums in history, which is more interesting than you might think. Then you get hands-on with building the terrarium, from pouring in rocks and soil to choosing plants and adding decorative elements. It's a lot of fun and feels like a messy art project like when you were a kid in school. The whole things lasts about two hours. There were about 16 people total in the class. You're invited to bring beverages and snacks to make an occasion out of it. It costs $30-60 to join the class, depending on how big your group is. Then it's another $50-400 for the container, plants, soil, etc. So it can get quite costly depending on the size and shape of terrarium you wish to build. You cannot bring your own container to prevent contamination. One thing to note is they offer lifetime maintenance help if your plants start dying or terrarium ecosystem doesn't seem to be working right. The shop is also open to visit outside a class. You can buy a pre-made terrarium or they can also help make a terrarium in your own container outside of classes because they have time to clean it. The shop itself is lovely and the person who taught the class was friendly and informative. The biggest downside for me was the surprise at the cost of the jars you had to choose from. There is one cheaper option but even that felt like a reach for what you are getting. From what I saw, there's that one cheaper option and then a jump to $100+. So yes, the website is clear in saying that you get a 25$ credit toward a terrarium and that the cheapest terrarium jar starts at $49 after the credit, but that's your only option at that price point and the rest are much more. Two other things to note- one, there's conflicting info on their website about whether they sell frogs for terrariums. I have animal welfare concerns about that and they should make their website clear. Two, on a Google review the business responded to concerns about how they treat queer people with scripture quotes... not a good look at all. read more

I am a huge fan of Roosevelt's Terrariums! What started out as an incredible girls activity over 6 years ago has only continued to get better. My beloved terrarium started to slowly die without any real reason- I finally figured out that someone in my office was clandestinely watering it- likely believing they were helping. So many choices of plants and accessories to include, plus a fun place to explore the more advanced terrarium art downstairs. Only downside is after about a week or two, one of the plants in my terrarium took over and killed all the other plants inside so now it is just growing moss. Daniel, my husband(haha), and I each made a terrarium and the wealth of options in plants and rocks was really excellent so our projects looked totally different and were a blast to make. We spent much more than I had expected, ringing in at about 500 dollars, but it's important to remember the fact that they will keep your terrarium beautiful For Years, guaranteed, if you come back with some dead plants or mold(highly unlikely) or anything at no additional charge. This is a SCAM. Definitely do not buy their Groupon, and don't buy classes as a gift! Their "all included" Groupon doesn't actually include a jar or anything to put your creation in. Your $60 class includes a $25 credit toward a container of your choice... but they all START at $50. If you really want to build a terrarium, just by the necessities and do it at home. Went to Roosevelt's Terrarium this morning with my daughter for a two hour class and we were extremely happy with our experience there. Our instructor was Cali, the manager, and she was very friendly and helpful through out the entire experience - she was very patient, too. The place was very clean and organized and the classroom held on the second floor was spacious and well stocked. A word of caution - to get to the upstairs classroom you need to climb a spiral staircase, so it may pose a challenge for some disabilities since there isn't an elevator. I hosted a "girlfriend" night and we all made terrariums using Roosevelt's Terrarium Kits. This was one of my most memorable and favorite projects I have ever done. We each visited the shop at our own conveniences to pick out our plants, rocks and landscape. Excellent assistance from the employees at Roosevelt's, btw! The day before my event I picked up everyone's orders so they would be organized and easy to identify for my girlfriends when they arrived. I created an account for viewing the "how-to" videos Roosevelt's supplied. Fantastic and helpful videos! I mirrored the videos on my television and we all went to town on our own little rainforest. This review was meant to go out since May. That is how long it took us to finally get together in the midst of this pandemic to build our terrariums. Our class was paid for long before the shut down, so the business allowed us to pick up our kits and build our terrariums at home. They also offer a couple of tutorials you can watch online on how to properly assemble your kits. I can't tell you how much it cost to do this because this was actually a birthday gift from my friend. All I know is that you pay a basic fee and essentially they give you a mason jar with soil, rocks, and some decorative miscellaneous pieces. You have to upgrade (pay more) to get a bigger glass jar. Needless to say, this was so fun and I would definitely recommend it to everyone. If you are looking for some low key activity and relaxation, Have a social distancing party in yard and build you a terrarium. After years of saying that I was going to do so, I finally took a class at Roosevelt Terrariums. It was awesome! Before I get to far into the experience I do want to note one thing: this is not a cheap date night. Unless you find an online 2-for-1 deal (which totally exists) you'll spend $120 ( $60 each) on the class alone, and even though that comes with a $25 in-store credit per person, that in reality doesn't get you much. A small mason jar-sized terrarium. If you want something larger, you should be prepared to spend upwards of an extra $100 each. My date night inadvertently ended up costing us almost $400 total. Thank god dinner was burgers and fries! But if you're prepared to spend the money, this experience is outstanding and a great memory to make either on your own, with a loved one, or a group. I cannot recommend it highly enough. The first surprise was how educational the class turned out to be! We had the owner of the store conduct our class, and he's just a gem of a human. He's a professional Teddy Roosevelt reenactor, and he immediately comes across as smart, passionate, patient, and kind. He tells you a bit about the history of terrarium and the place it had in shaping global culture. Spoiler Alert: It's pretty dang significant! After the quick history (and philosophy) lesson, he dives into instruction. Every step is super clear and he's quick to tell you WHY you do certain things, not just to do them. All the tools you'll need are well organized and they keep the place as tidy as possible, considering 18 people are playing in the dirt. They have a nice variety of plants, rocks, gravel, and fun little tchotchkes to make your terrarium a unique little world of your own creation. Also, it's important to note that in the price comes lifetime maintenance and assistance. They have a whole "terrarium spa" in the back room where people bring in their creations for cleaning and trimming and such. It's a fun concept and definitely helps to justify the expense. I left with something I LOVE. I'll pat myself on the back a little bit, mine turned out pretty wonderfully. I'm awfully proud of myself and inspired to create more, and not just terrariums. My friend and I took advantage the two for one special. It was great! The owner is super funny, and the class was so much more informative than I expected. The base terrarium that comes with your class purchase is a mason jar. So yes, if you want a large, fancy one, you have to cough up more money to upgrade. I did because plants are a hobby of mine. My friend did not upgrade, because she wants to try one out and see if she can keep it alive before she does a big one. So it's possible to go and not spend any extra money if you want. The options are dazzling, but with some willpower you can keep the costs in check. It's super fun and interesting, no matter which size terrarium you end up with. The plants are of high-quality - nothing looks old or like it hasn't been well-maintained. The instructor is adorable. The way he teaches is fantastic. It's much more than "put this plant here and this plant here." He gave the history of terrariums and went into the science behind how they work. I received a gift through Groupon for a 2-for-1 class ($60 worth $120). That class itself was amazing. James was our teacher and he and his father opened up this shop. The class is roughly 2 hours but the time goes by quickly. Participants get $25 credit towards their terrarium. Each terrarium is priced differently depending on size. My partner and I chose a glass container priced at about $89 and $99. Although expensive, terrariums are meant to be yours for years or life. Roosevelt's terrariums also offer lifetime warranty (can drop off tour terrarium and they will tend it make to life or fix it for free) and once you take a class, you can technically come back and even bring your own container and they will charge by the volume on what materials you use. Brown thumb here! Nothing has ever lived under my roof, so I can say from experience that I'm so relieved that Roosevelt's Terrarium has their amazing worry-free guarantee which means they basically repair your terrarium free of charge. Or you're allowed to come in during their store hours to fix it up yourself. They also trim & clean them for free as well. First thing's first. There are a million complaints about cost & group-ons etc. Upon noticing this, I decided that I'd just go straight to the store and get my own experience. Gregg had spoken to me on the phone, and had offered to match the groupon rate in store as well as make a little care package for me for a birthday gift. It was the perfect most sentimental memory of a gift that continues to flourish, well the birthday boy's at least. But I'll continue that story in the next few paragraphs. Breakdown: As you walk into the shop the entire wall is filled with beautiful containers that would match any type of person, and really starts to call at your creativity. They've all been pre-priced specifically for the class to already have the -$25 retail price. It makes it simpler in the end so that there's less math on the day of the class. But it's understandable that as a consumer society, we like to see the subtracted -$25 ourselves. The prices of the containers only seem steep because it's also including the price of all the plants that go in it as well, the knowledge, the usage of the tools, and their worry-free guarantee [which I've already used]. I do not think many of those who've written their reviews mentioned that; they've merely complained about the expensive containers. I'd also like to note that some of these pricier containers are works of art, and pretty amazing to have a growing ecosystem in. Speaking of growing ecosystem, that's exactly what this is. It's not one of those measly half semi-circles you find in the grocery store with an air plant and succulent. They're beautifully selected tropical plants that you enclose in a container that continues to thrive through their very own water cycle and rays of indirect sunshine. Through the class, you're instructed by James, who has such a great eye and guidance so that you don't feel lost at any point. I chose some really challenging container(s) which had a narrow neck and James helped me troubleshoot throughout my entire experience. As you can see from my photos, I've now had two terrariums. My first was made on June 1st, 2019. It was quite the triumph. I put it on a hill, and put in some really beautiful tropical plants to make it pop. James advised me that as the african violets fell off to make sure I grabbed it out of the terrarium to keep it from molding at the bottom. I didn't have a completely sealed container so it was easy to do. Unfortunately for me, it seemed my house didn't get a lot of sunlight, and portland weather had been slightly spotty lately with the sunshine. So on a day it was sunny out, I let my container have a bit of sunshine for an hour. Boy, he didn't like it. And from then on out he started withering away.. only maybe two plants survived & luckily Roosevelt's Terrarium were able to help me clear the guy out and start anew! I decided to upgrade to a bigger size and really pick some exotic colored plants. James was so helpful in helping me find some plants that would really pop under the blue glass of the terrarium I'd chosen. I honestly couldn't even bare to keep my terrarium in my living room, I had to bring it into my room because I was so mesmerized by it. Especially by the prayer plant that pops up in the evening hours and lowers its leaves in the day time. There's also a ton of knowledge regarding each plant that many people may not know, so don't be afraid to ask questions or even write down the names of the plants in your little ecosystem you're about to take home. If you curious, just ask! This is an amazing local business who is not trying to fool anyone, they're genuine and will be there to answer any of your needs. For the price I felt I got a lot of bang for my buck as all of the plants are included in the price and they have all the tools and goodies you could need! When you buy a terrarium here it comes with a "lifetime guarantee" which is great cause it is NOT cheap. Unfortunately the new owner is not honoring that. I wouldn't have paid for the class here had I known they would renege on their word. I don't give a shit if you aren't the original owner dude. That's lame. Thanks for the expensive dead ass plant buddy! I'd say you're better off just googling how to make a terrarium online since there's absolutely no benefit to taking a "class" here at all. Just took this class yesterday! So delighted to have found this gem of a store out in Portland visiting. I'm not very good at keeping plants alive. James, who hosted the class was really chill and helped me pick the best plants for my terrarium. I balled out and got a huge glass container, I'm making it for a gecko enclosures. The glass is a bit pricey, which is fine because they DO explain that when you inquire about the class. I made a beautiful terrarium with no issues at all, and I even bought another smaller one for my aunt! They come with a lifetime warranty and hopefully I'll never have to use it. They'll also trim and groom your plants to keep them looking fresh Once you take the class you can come in, and just pay for the plants you use or just for the size of the jar. You can even bring your own jars!!! It's so exciting I can have sustainable plants without worrying about killing them. I will be back very soon to make some more terrariums! read more

While the shop was beautiful, the actual experience of building the terrarium was underwhelming. You could very very easily DIY the same experience for a fraction of the cost. Owner was amazing, I went to leave and he immediately apologized for neglecting me (definitely did not!) and stopped to take the time to answer my questions about frogs and containers and help me even though there was a class. Overall, this place is great. If you go in just to buy one yes they are expensive... but how many living things come with free replacement forever? Also the ones they make are beautiful. If you do the class just be prepared for a few things... If Gregg teaches your class be prepared to get a loooooong history lesson on terrariums. It's not that the information isn't interesting or cool, it's just a good 35-45 minutes of standing there in one spot excited to build a terrarium but having to listen to a class lecture first. Again cool info... but a condensed version would be nice. It was long enough some of the people needed to get chairs because at their age or physical level standing in one spot for so long was rough on them. Ok here is the biggest downfall. I got a pass for Christmas for this. When you read the information it's fairly clear you get 25$ of free items and can pay the difference to upgrade. However they really should mention what 25$ will get you. It's a 16 ounce mason jar. Which fits 1 or 2 short plants. It's super tiny. If you want a terrarium like most of what they show be prepared to spend another 90-125$. It includes everything but it's a sticker shock if you aren't prepared. I feel like they post all these beautiful terrariums on their living social/Groupon/etc passes and fail to really prepare you for what that actually costs. That said, I love my terrarium... just wish I would have been a bit more prepared for the additional cost. I'm not saying it isn't worth the cost... I'm just saying they blindside you by just how much the "pay the difference" is. I personally found that business model to be a bit unethical and really wish they would change it. For reference here is the terrarium I built. It has the drainage, dirt, sand, 4 plants, different sizes of rocks, and some moss, and a cat figurine. It's in a gallon size apothecary glass jar. It is an expensive experience but so worth it. You can bring your own beer or wine and spend you evening building your mini dream garden. You get a $25 credit that you can use towards a glass container, which is pretty rad. Keep in mind that the price of the glass container also includes all the plants and such that go in it... so the bigger the container the more expensive because it fits more stuff. We did larger ones which were a bit expensive but well worth it. I brought mine back as a plant died and started to rot and mold grew. They replaced the plant and spruced it up. Aphids appeared later and again I took it in. They sprayed and looking good again! Definitely a great experience :) read more
