    Blooming potted flowers for funeral
    Samantha Y.

I recently was in charge of providing florals a funeral service where the deceased disliked big floral wreaths intensely and generally preferred live potted flower that could be donated to church or family members could take after service. It seems simple but became challenging in Portland, OR in late fall. I called numerous florist and nurseries and everyone just responded with what they had in inventory. Daphne was the only person who offered to visit the Flower Market and see what was available with no promises. She sent me images from the market, purchased what she thought I might want, then brought them all to the service to again pick and choose. We only had to pay for what we wanted. We decided to keep all she brought mainly because her selection was amazing! Daphne's service, flexibility and just general gracious hospitality was truly appreciated.

I just love seeing all the wonderful, healthy plants Daphne curates in her shop and always appreciate the great care advice, reasonable prices and the friendly, personable service she provides. She's always so patient with my questions and her extensive knowledge and love for plants is inspiring and infectious.

In my defense, theynshare the space with Little Rituals and their sign on the same door has two wine glasses! Whatever brought me in, I'm grateful. This store is fabulous. As a person who already has too many plants, this is it's also dangerous. You fellow plant lovers know what I mean, we always think we can find a spot for another! But it's not just about floor or shelf space, it's about proper lighting. They have all sorts of plants like monstera, fiddle leaf fig and palms. Snake plants, pathos, cactus and succulents. Yep, I'm in trouble! In addition to the plants, they have everything for their care and to display them like metal hanging plant holders, macrame plant holders, and pots in a variety of styles and sizes. Also lots of lotions, bath salts and oils. Such a cute shop and worth stopping in.

I was looking for some a unique gift for my daughters 24th birthday and thought this was the perfect shop to find something unique. I bought my daughter this an affirmation card deck. After she gets settled in her new place, I will bring her here to pick out a plant. And while I was there and I chatted with Vanessa and Cassie and loved hearing about their story I have how this brick and mortar shop came to be. Oliver was there too and we had a nice conversation about his dog Hankey. :) They currently co-share a brick + mortar shop with Little Rituals. What a great little but mighty plant nursery in S.E. Portland Oregon…read more I used to live in this neighborhood and it has many hidden gems. Birds and Bees Nursery is one of them. I'm a member of Carnivorous Plants Society of Oregon and one of my things is finding places that sell Carnivorous Plants outside of the big box stores. Sure the big Home store has plenty of Venus Flytraps every year but it's a cruel thing to see a plant abused by employees who don't know how to care for such a plant. First of all this plant has 2. basic needs. 1. All the direct sunlight it can get. At least 12 hours a day. 2. Distilled Water or Rain water. To see this plant living inside the store on a shelf dries out is a difficult thing to see. If it is watered, Tap Water us what it's given. Tap water is a for sure slow death to a Venus Flytrap Plant. So in my search, I found a little nursery in the burbs. Next to a Taco Smell restaurant, full of all sorts of plants from vines to carnivorous plants. In my interest, they had Sundews, Picture Plants and a ton of Venus Flytraps all sitting in the full sun. I found what I thought was a good specimen and when I picked up and looked at the Venus Flytrap I wanted, I realized it was actually 3 small and one slightly larger Venus Flytrap plants in the same pot for (I'm pretty sure in right. I was so excited to find such an awesome plant that I kinda forgot and the receipt wasn't helpful.) $15.00. They're usually about $10.00 for a common Venus Flytrap plant. I basically bought 4 plants for $3.75 a piece. With such great prices, my wife found a couple plants she couldn't leave without. We both left Birds and Bees happy. Update on our plants. They're all thriving in their new home.

I'm sure it's nice inside, but I wouldn't know, as there is no access for wheelchair usersread more

Their service is good and they will do their best to make things right. One time there was a mix-up, my original bouquet was delivered to another customer, and I received that customer's bouquet. It was nice that I also got to keep the original - although not my color / taste.

We got all locally sourced and seasonal flowers for our September wedding. They were so communicative and easy to work with. Day before the wedding there was an issue with the cake bakery changing the plans for the cake flowers. Mary who was working at the shop offered to drop off the flowers to the bakery on our behalf which was great! Then with more back and forth Kailla and I chatted and she just offered to do it onsite at our venue so the flowers would stay fresh. She went above and beyond as this change by the bakery the day before the wedding was stressful. We will continue to use Sellwood for our floral needs. I mean look how gorgeous My bridal bouquet is! In fact I told my husband that on our anniversary I want another bouquet from Sellwood.

They dropped it off at our front door and texted me to let me know it was there. It came in the cutest dark brown glass vase and the arrangement was so thoughtfully put together. I've always been a live plant kind of girl though vs fresh cut bouquets. I just personally like having the plant for years to remember the occasion by (yes, my house is full of plants, haha). I decided to take apart the bouquet to try to root the succulent clippings. They were all wire wrapped and then wrapped in green plant tape. I was so happy to find that once disassembled, the wiring was actually keeping little roots safe! It took a bit of time, to keep as many roots from breaking but it worked! I ended up being able to plant 3 separate pots full of the succulents from the bouquet! What a clever idea for a unique and beautiful gift. I decided to put the remaining non-succulent plants back in the little vase and it's still so charming on their own.

Over the years I have had floral arrangements delivered many times. Usually something in the $45-$80 range. While a few times I was a bit underwhelmed at what was delivered. I have always been pretty happy and most of the time delighted at what the florists had created. This was my first time ordering from this business. I was excited when I read their reviews and saw some of their arraignments. They noted that they often include unusual flowers in their floral presentations. I enjoy flora that is a bit out of the norm and along with the other information I read, I thought they would be able to create a lovely arrangement for my Valentine on Valentine's Day. I talked with them and requested "something bright and colorful with maybe a couple Stargazer Lillies for fragrance". I asked if they could do something nice and as described for $65 plus a $10 delivery fee. They said they definitely would be able to create something my Valentine would love. What was delivered was a total embarrassment! 3 totally closed Stargazer Lillies and a bunch of "filler plants" crammed into a narrow mouthed vase that even made adding water to the pitiful arrangement difficult. I worked at a florist many years ago and have friends that still do. I thought this arrangement was far from what was requested and not close to the value for what was charged. The people I know with and without experience in the floral industry that I showed the arrangement to were all in total agreement. This arrangement was substandard, poorly executed and over priced. I would definitely not recommend this business.

It took me far too long to visit this delightful women-owned shoppe, but now that I have I will add it to my shortlist of Portland favorites. First off, the owners couldn't have picked a more appropriate setting for a plant shoppe. With a classic storefront with window displays on both sides of the entrance, the store takes on a nostalgic vibe of tradesperson shops of yesteryear. I love knowing I'm shopping small, locally owned businesses that make our communities vibrant and diverse. Now let's get to the plants... that's the reason we're here! There's quite a diverse selection of houseplants in such a small space... indeed, something for everyone. If you need to pop in quickly for a "Get Well" card and a miniature pot of African Violets, they've got it. If specialty plants are more your thing, you'll find everything from the sought after Monstera cultivars, cacti and succulents, to Anthurium and Begonias. In fact, given their regular delivery schedule, it sounds like they can special order pretty much anything you might need. I spent 15 minutes or so getting to know Kailia, one of the owners who is also a registered horticultural therapist. She's very friendly, knowledgeable, and a delightful addition to the neighborhood. She made a clumsy oaf like me feel extremely at ease in her adorable shoppe. Be sure to check out their very informative website, LarkspurPortland.com for lots of valuable resources, information on Horticultural Therapy, and a pretty good impression of the types of plants the have in stock. I'm a fan, and I'll continue coming back!
