Took a terrarium class with some friends and this experience was perfect! The class fee includes a 6'' round vessel, a plant and other supplies needed for the terrarium plus a store credit for special items to add. It's definitely enough to make a beautiful bowl garden. You can also upgrade to a larger vessel, purchase more or larger crystals, etc. My friends and I all did different types of terrariums with different plants, but they all came out so beautifully. It was a lovely event to do with friends and then we all came home with a souvenir. This place is magical. that's not an exaggeration. Instant great energy - beautiful. A "dove" that lands on your head, the most beautiful little pieces of joy throughout the store and the owner is just lovely. my 10 year old was transfixed after making a terrarium with his dad there and made me promise we would visit often. My partner and I came here for our anniversary to build a terrarium. The owner is a wonderful person and was super friendly from the get go. The energy in the store is peaceful and welcoming. They (the owner) helped us to gather materials and gave us instructions to create our terrarium, while also letting us take charge and create what we wanted. There is a curated assortment of plants, crystals, shells, stones, sand, etc to add to your terrariums or buy yourself. The quality is wonderful, especially their crystal assortment. Cute little place with a large selection of plants, succulents, airplants, cacti, etc. We came recently after buying a Groupon for a self guided terrarium building experience . So awesome ! We had a blast, it was relaxing, a fun way to get your creative juices flowing and learn a bit about their plant types and terrarium types . We ended with two pretty good sized terrariums now displayed in our home. One of the coolest things I've done in a while. The shop is super cute and peaceful, I love that Paloma the dove roams free. The selection of crystals is both impressive and well marked. The workers were full of knowledge and very helpful, made us feel super welcome. We made terrariums at the DIY bar, there were 4 types of sand to choose from, and multiple different plants, stones, glitter and much more to add in. This is the cutest terrarium spot ever!!! Came here during my annual Portland visit and made two terrariums to bring back to norcal. Both made it back safely....flew with them as my carry on. They have everything that you'd need to make a terrarium...glass bowls, succulents, lots and lots of color sands, shells, crystals, wood, animal accessories....everything!!!! They even have pre made ones around for inspirations. A medium sized terrarium cost me 35 bucks and the small one was about 20 dollars. It's what you'd spend at a regular store but knowing that you personally made it and it's uniquely yours made it so much more satisfying!!! There is no sales tax in Portland so paying that much doesn't feel too bad. Love this place and would recommend it for everyome. This place is such a gem! You immediately feel at peace when you enter because it's so freaking adorable and beautiful in here. The staff are very sweet and helpful without being at all overbearing. This is really important to me because I absolutely HATE it when the employee follows you around creepily or you get approached by 20 different people asking if they can help (ahem, LUSH, *hint hint*). One day, feeling that I simply didn't have enough plant life in my home, I typed terrarium + Portland into Yelp and was directed to this hidden gem. When passing through the threshold, I felt much like I imagine I would entering a Hobbit Hole. Terrariums of every size and shape hang from the ceiling and are perched on shelves. Burlap sacks and glass jars are filled with various types of sand and stones for building tiny habitats. It's a magical little place. I wasn't quite sure how to proceed, as I was a little overwhelmed by all the options (I've never planted in sand instead of soil), but the kind gentleman working there walked me through the process of selecting a vessel and using their create-your-own bar to make a custom terrarium. He transferred my plants and gave me directions for watering. The end result was a stunning centerpiece for my kitchen table. When all was said and done it cost about $35, which included the glass container, two small succulents, sand, a chunk of quartz, and a handful of tiny decorative shells and pebbles. Reasonable, in my opinion. I've been back several times since my initial visit to pick up more sand and plants so my son and I could build more terrariums at home. I never grow tired of the serene environment. (Just try being stressed out in there. It's impossible.) They offer bi-weekly terrarium-building classes which are on my short list of activities to do this spring. If you're exploring Portland, a visit to this cute little shop is a must. read more

Lots of annoying adjectives describe this place: whimsical, magical, precious, delicate, lovely. Very rarely am i into places that can fall into these categories, but dang if I don't love Artemisia. For what they're trying to do, they're pretty much perfect. Focusing on terrariums, Artemisia distinguishes itself by planting their specimens in sand rather than soil. I think this gives their creations a cleaner look. They also have a large variety of vessels, including a number of hanging styles. But you don't want to buy a pre-made terrarium. No, you want to make your own! Go in on your own, or sign up for a class. Either way you'll be able to flex your creative muscles and come out with something pretty. You pay by the plant and then for decorative elements by the scoop. The prices are reasonable, though if you're not careful you can nickel-and-dime yourself into a spendy creation. Just remember, less is oftentimes more. I adore Artemisia, and I can envision myself coming here quite often for personalized gifts. Something tells me my friends and loved ones won't mind. read more

The holiday season irritates me. In fact, I'm more likely to pop in my copy of Disintegration and listen to it on loop at this time of the year than even Halloween. Because nobody forces you to do a full-scale stock of what the past year has meant to you and whose presence in your life you'd like to celebrate the most during Halloween. But we have to do that around Christmas. So Robert Smith and his honey tenor flow from the stereo as I go about my business feeling like I'm giving Western society the silent treatment. One of the things on my mind, especially today when NPR reports that the U.S. has been in a recession since the summer before last, is that hairy "What am I doing with my life?" elephant. Do I enjoy coming into my office, shifting papers around, and having to make nice until five? Am I content enough after five o'clock to justify my whereabouts before that hour? And if I don't like the answers to either of those questions, what can I do to fix that? When is Lost going to come back with new episodes and how did they move the frickin island? Why are feathers in style again? How will Robert Smith wear his hair once he starts to go bald? You can probably tell I'm not very good at that area of inquiry. But I take solace in the fact that most people my age don't have satisfactory answers to a lot of those questions, either. That's OK, probably even better to be uncertain about the future now than it will be ten years from now. Still, it's always inspirational to meet peers who not only get to do exactly what they love for a living, but have hit on a career so cool that you're half convinced they are TV characters. Take the owners of Artemisia. They sell a wide variety of plants, from ballerina-like bamboo trees to shiny succulents. They arrange the wares as if they're pieces in a museum. The outdoor section really feels like walking through a friend's thoughtfully planted backyard. Their business space doubles as both a nursery and an art studio. As if that's not evidence of amazing karma enough, the owners - a young couple - get to play music of their choice and be cute and in love and go home knowing that they're selling a product that pleases the gentrified consumer populace as well as poor 'shmoes who just want something alive and pretty in their shoebox-sized kitchens. Plus, they own a shop in one of the busiest little avenues the eastside has to offer. If The Cat* and The Boy* didn't respectively eat and kill all the plant life that arrives in their home, the owners of Artemisia would probably see me way more often. We have black thumbs to match our black souls. *Knowing that my house has not been kind to plants but still manages to contain these two characters, I can't really feel too sorry for myself or too morose about the future. But I'm still going to blast the Cure until New Year's Eve. read more

In my life there are two things that I have to have to my make house a home... a dog and plants. This has gone into extreame overload, on the plant side, since I found Artemisia. When I walked into the small little shop I fell in LOVE. The fact that every time I've gone, the owner is there to help me with any questions I may have always makes me feel comfortable with my purchase. She now knows that I have a dog that likes to sniff all my new plants and they have to either be up on a counter or sturdy enough to deal with her big nose moving them around. My rubber plant that I bought there has been a great coversation starter at my place... no one ever thinks its real! Although it can be kind of confusing to find it's TOTALLY worth the trip. A great selection. Customer service was also excellent. My friend and I got a succulent, glass container, sand and pebbles to build our first terrarium. We had already bought some other succulents elsewhere. The lady working was very informative and answered all our questions. Don't feel shy if you have no experience with terrariums! They will tell you all you need to know. Only downside is it's kinda pricey. A lot of these places are, but I've seen succulents in others stores for cheaper prices. We came here for a ladies night out & had a blast! The ladies here are so kind and flexible when helping to organize a large event. The store was quaint & had such a variety of items to inspire you. We participated in the terrarium workshop and Bella was our instructor. She was so patient when working with the creativity challenged ladies and we all went home with a terrarium that were each uniquely beautiful. The workshop was reasonably priced & there are no hidden costs. We also got the choice to upgrade & we were allotted $5 in merchandise in addition to all the fun extras already included in the workshop fees. On top of all that, we also received a voucher for a discount on our next workshop visit. This store is located in such a cute & hip area of Portland. We were able to enjoy a nice dinner before & had the opportunity to enjoy the nightlife too afterwards. They have a nice variety of other workshops too if terrarium building is not your thing.
