Room Mate Óscar Hotel is in a great central location within walking distance of many sights. Plus it's a block or two from the major Gran Via shopping area and Metro station. It's in the middle of the Cheuca gayborhood with tons of restaurants and gay bars. The hotel is contemporary and rooms are a uniquely designed. My reserved Double room was small with window view of nothing, so I took their recommended upgrade for a Deluxe Double room facing Plaza Pedro Zerolo. What a difference a few square meters make! Front desk staff were very helpful and always greeted me as I entered. The bed is super comfortable. The glass shower is nice except for the hard to control single faucet. WiFi was strong. Starbucks is downstairs. The rooftop pool and bar is the best feature, with 360 degrees view of central Madrid. I totally recommend this chic gay-friendly hotel. Or straight-friendly. read more

This review is for the rooftop bar only, but I'm sure the hotel is not much better. The employees show nothing but a commitment to bad customer service. We arrived wanting nothing more than to enjoy a nice cocktail on a rooftop, however we were quickly told that the rooftop was "full." While asking them for recommendations for other rooftop bars, they called the rooftop and said that they could accommodate us, but that only beer and wine would be available, as they were closing "soon." Despite the fact that they closed at 2 and it was only 12:30, we decided to compromise and head up. As we rode up the elevator our expectations were high - while we wouldn't be able to enjoy a cocktail, at least we would be able to enjoy a busy and exciting environment. Upon arriving at the roof however, we saw that the bar was nearly EMPTY. You could tell the few parties there were probably ready to leave soon, leaving the bartenders plenty of bandwidth to make us something on their surprisingly nice cocktail menu. We were told that we had to order within the next 5 minutes (reminder that the bar does not close for another hour and a half) and quickly made our drink decisions (albeit with a limited selection of options). After we were told this, our waitress left and never came back, forcing us to order at the bar. While I understand the employees want to go home after a late night of working, at the end of the day the closing time should be the closing time. I am a frequent bar and restaurant goer and this is my only one star review ever - if you are still reading I implore you to go to any of the other wonderful bars Madrid has to offer. read more

Room was actually pretty nice with walk-out balcony but was on the top floor disturbed each day by pool construction going on, pool was closed but they still charged full rate for the room with no concessions for the noise. Dont expect an early check-in, had to wait to the last minute at 3pm when my flight arrived at 6:30am. Maybe that this a Hyatt brand hotel that they are just adhering to "policy", but the mangers are apathetic to guest inconvenience. Would stay somewhere else next time. read more

If you're looking for the Castro, Chelsea, Dupont Circle or West Hollywood (more to the point, if you're after the gays) come to Chueca and if you need a place to sleep whilst there book into the Room Mate Óscar. Part of the chicly affordable chain of Room Mate Hotels, Óscar has a more clubby vibe than Laura, Mario and my favourite of the lot: Alicia. Centrally located in Chueca, this neon-flavoured boutique hotel puts you in the heart of the action and is in walking distance of many shops, bars and restaurants. Breakfast is slightly awkward as the room it's served in seems more appropriate for a discothèque, complete with the requisite lighting and musical selections (kinda weird first thing in the morning.) But for those interested in the food: this is the only Room Mate in Madrid that's offered me eggs cooked to order as an option. Light sleepers should know that the walls are thin. Over several stays here I was regularly disturbed by the pleasureful moans of other hotel guests. Technocrats will likely be driven mad by the spotty wifi (don't expect to have lengthy video chats with your colleagues on this network!) Overall, I'd say Óscar is a better bet for the weekend partier than the weekday business traveler. When booking, trade at least one room class up (the cost of which is fairly negligible) for maximum comfort. read more

It's pretty hard to find any faults at all in this really cool 'metrosexual' Hotel. Situated on a modest square just a hundred metres or so from the Gran Via it is a perfect base from which to explore Madrid. Lying in the heart of the Chueca area it stands at the gateway of cool (in both senses of the word) streets and alleyways brimming with small concession stores, food marts, cafes and restaurants. The staff are smart, efficient and friendly; the rooms are stylish, modern and super comfortable however the icing on the cake (almost quite literally) is the New York Soho House-style 'Splash' bar on the roof, where by day you can loll on a day bed or by night drink the night away rubbing shoulders with the Glitterati. read more

I deduct a star for every body hair I find in my hotel room. Thus, we are at 1 star. I found 4. Some curly, some straight. Some short, some long. But, 4 of them in total. Mostly in the bathroom -- which is all white, so I am unsure how the cleaning crew could miss the glaring follicles. I find this wholly unacceptable. Beyond the hair issue, this place is appearing a bit worn down. Cracks in the plaster, smudges in the mirrors. The decor is austere -- bordering on strange. I am fine with a very small room, but by God it better be clean. The hallways are extremely dark and on motion detectors, but it is spooky and there is no natural light. My window overlooked an interior courtyard of white rocks and other people's windows and a sliver of blue sky. The good: *Free internet was reliable. *The breakfast (is extra) -- pretty good, hot and cold items, coffee, comfortable setting. *Friendly staff. Easy check-in and reservation. The bad (besides above): *techno/trance music at breakfast. Room is like a forgotten club. *paper thin walls. *teeny elevators. As others have said (Juan T's review is very helpful) Oscar is in a prime location -- great cafes (I recommend sitting out on the patio square of Reina), and in the "gayborhood" (his words!) -- which means things are festive til the wee hours, and quite fun. Unfortunately, I can't deal with hairs and outdated/unrepaired digs so I'll be staying elsewhere next time I pop over to Madrid. read more

We dropped in on a Sunday night on a recommendation to check out their rooftop patio - stop in at the hotel desk and they'll give you access to the terrace if it's open. Drink in the view of Madrid in this posh setting that feels more like a trendy nightclub than a hotel. The drinks were the most expensive of any we ordered during our time in Spain, and while our bartender was not fluent in English she was helpful nonetheless! read more

Stayed in Madrid for 3 days and Room Mate Oscar was a good choice. It is centrally located in the Chueca district (also known as the gay district), with a trendy look and feel (disco lift!!) but still comfortable overall. I hadn't before experienced the Queen Bed = two singles made separately next to each other thing before but it seems to be common in Spain. There is a very nice rooftop bar, and it looks over a square that is nice for a late night drink or meal. There was also a cafe downstairs but we didn't try it. The mini-bar prices were also very reasonable. We were able to walk to everything we wanted to see in the area, which saves you money - although overall it was a very good value for money hotel. read more

If you'd like to stay in an very hip, modern and affordable hotel stay at Room Mate Oscar! Located in Chueca, the gay district of Madrid, you'll be around of nightlife in the area such as bars within walking distance of some of the city's main attractions. I booked this hotel due to stellar reviews from Yelpers and its trendy modern design -- especially the affordable price! I took a short walk in the neighborhood through what appeared to many hookers, young people out and about, and tons of police heavily patrolling the area. During my three hour or so walk around the city, I visited Plaza Mayor and visited the 24/7 churro and chocolate emporium, Puerto del Sol, San Gines. If you have a car, you'll have to park in the underground lot -- something that was not communicated to me that I had to drive around three times around the hotel because I as told to park my car at the front of the hotel by the neon lights. The people at the front desk spoke English really fluently and were really top notch when it came to advising me of where to go on my short visit (walk) through Madrid before my flight back home. I loved the modern and trendy feeling of the hotel. My room was wonderful and I loved their bath products with custom designed packaging. The one negative aspect of the hotel at the time of my visit is that there was no air conditioning which made me really uncomfortable. Next visit in Spain, Madrid will be my launchpad to the southern part of country. At the hotel, they recommended the short trip to Toledo an hour from Madrid. Seems like the highlight of the city is the art at the Prado and Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia. TIP: If the hotel is complete booked, book through a online booking site such as booking.com as that's where I found availability when their website was completely sold out. Negatives: No air conditioning at time of visit and heard loud footsteps in my room and wondered if the hotel was haunted. :X read more

Located in Chueca, the gayborhood of Madrid, this is an excellent value for the money. The clientele seems to be anywhere from 50 to 80% gay depending on the night and what is going on in Chueca ( during Madrid Pride, 110% gay, as the hotel teems with guests ). You are walking distance to everything in Chueca plus Gran Via. All the front desk staff are professional, all speak English ( some French, German and Italian as well ), and the housekeeping staff was thorough and respected the " Do Not Disturb " signs. The rooms are modern and well decorated, with large bathrooms, great lighting, plush towels, high quality linens, and the mattresses firm but not hard-as-a-piece-of-plywood as is often the case in Spain. The only downside: the walls are indeed thin, so if you are a light sleeper I recommend ear plugs or a white-noise maker. You can run the A/C Fan in the room and it will drown out most noises - and by the same token, mask yours ;-) Come on guys, be courteous to your neighbors at 4am after a night out at Liquid or Hot or Enfrente or wherever you spend the evening! That being said, this is Chueca - I do not recommend this hotel for families with small children or business travelers, neither of whom are likely to be staying in this neighborhood anyways, but just in case you fall into either category. Be aware that on weekends especially, most of the guests are busy partying well into wee-morning hours in the bars/clubs of Chueca. The Wi-fi was OK - it worked best in the lobby, but the signal in the rooms was a little weak. I had to go downstairs twice to use Skype, but sending e-mail and browsing the web in the rooms was OK, if a little slower than what I'm used to. It is well worth the extra 5 or 7 Euros per day for the breakfast - breakfast choices in Chueca are over-priced relative to value, you will easily pay closer to 10 Euros in the nearby cafes for less variety than the Oscar's buffet. They have an egg/omelette station, plenty of pastries and juices. My only complaint was, besides the oddly nightclub-like room the breakfast area is located in, was the fact that I didn't want to hear trance/house music at 9 am while eating my scrambled eggs. Had enough of that the night before! The Oscar is one of the best hotel values in Madrid for those wanting to stay in Chueca and avoid the crush of tourists in the Prado area and the other tourist corridors. read more

Pros: Hotel is trendy, loungy, ad right near the center of madrid where everything is happening. Whether you are gay or straight there is a ton just do all around you. Also walking distance to Prado museum and Parque de Retiro. The hotel check in process was quick and efficient. They will give you a wifi hotspot for free to take around with you in the city if you ask for it and worked quite well. Wifi was decently fast. The hotel provided a tooth brush and razor when i asked them where the nearest store was for FREE. The hotel staff left a slice of cake in the room during my birthday (which i didn't tell them). All in all service was great. Location great. Bed was great. Cheap price. Cons: The shower is a mess. You have to hold the shower head the whole time you are showering or it sprays all over the bathroom. The room / elevator key de magnetizes about once per day. read more

The hotel is centrally located and is easy walking distance to many cafes, bars, restaurants and lots of Madrid's cultural delights. The first thing that struck me was just how welcoming the staff were. Check - in was busy with check - outs when we got there, all fifteen of us, and as we were there for four days we sat in their cheap comfy chairs at a smallish reception using the free internet provided. After a while we checked - in but our rooms weren't ready so they took our luggage so we could explore the city centre. The reception area is described as designer but to me it just looked cheap and, well, tacky. It's as if you asked a few six year olds to build you something from bits of plastic and glass and after they were finished you said 'now isn't that lovely' while you thought, oh dear can't wait to tidy that away. Speaking of cheap and designed by six year olds the lift deserves its own mention. Remember this is a hotel with lots of guests, and guests often with suitcases or shopping - and the tiny lift barely holds two people or one person with a decent sized case. Worse still it's card operated so there's s good degree of luck to make the darn thing actually work first, second or sixth time (get the picture) and we found it tedious every time we used it - it's really crap, the shower in our room was roomier. Another un-delight is the lighting in corridors. It's so dim. Maybe this is trendy, maybe it saves cost I just found it irritating. Our room was fine Bd the bed comfy. The shower was good too. The room doors seem to be made of steel and the place is a mix of prison meets IKEA. The breakfast around nine euro is great value with hot and cold food but there can be long queues for the one coffee machine. Finally we enjoyed the roof top cocktail bar with excellent cocktails but at 13 euro each they were not value for money. read more

Another excellent place courtesy of the Room-mate chain. Oscar is wildly overdesigned, with incredible blocks and banks of subtly changing lights on the walls (saying, if you step back a bit, words like LOVE in enormous letters), and mad colour schemes in the rooms, such as white combined with apple green. It looks like something out of Stanley Kubrick's 2001 A Space Odyssey. The rooms are spacious, comfortable and a bit like playrooms for adults. It's not for conservative people or traditionalists. But the staff are very friendly. Breakfast is served in a very stylish room, and the food is marginally better and fresher in my experience that Room-mate Alicia. Internet access is wireless, easy and very fast. The immediate area is a bit dodgy, a noisy square in Chueca, but the overall location is very good. I strongly recommend Oscar if you like a youthful, stylish, slightly frivolous experience. read more
