Nothing lasts forever... Over 25 years, I've probably spent $20K - $30K on Room & Board furniture, but that's done now. R&B has essentially decided to end that relationship over an $800 purchase of picture frames that they never delivered. Here's how it went down: In late December, we ordered $800 of photo frames and received an expected availability date of 4 March - 8 March from R&B. Based on their estimate, we planned a trip overseas for early February. On February 6th, with no advanced notice from R&B, we were advised by UPS that the frames had shipped, 2 days before we were scheduled to leave the US. Not wanting my frames to sit on my front porch in the snow for 3 or 4 days, I requested that R&B inform UPS to hold the delivery. That didn't happen. Instead, R&B recalled the order and set up a delivery for March 3rd, again without informing me. When I returned to the US and discovered what they had done, I gave R&B 2 business days to either get the order into UPS' hands or to refund my money. Guess which they chose? R&B essentially helped themselves to an $800, 6 week, loan and in the end, were too lazy to even bother shipping our purchase to us. At every stage they failed to communicate. And if those lapses weren't enough, I had 2 R&B customer service representatives disrespect my disability. (I am severely hearing-impaired, and both R&B reps hung up on me when I instructed them on how they were to communicate so I could understand them--as I am entitled to do under the ADA.) Long-story-short: R&B threw away a 25 year relationship because they're lazy and don't know how to do their jobs. Shop elsewhere. I will. read more

One of the recent items I purchased from them was an adjustable, electric wooden desk. It was a beautiful and expensive product, which was worth it to me as I was aiming for quality and durability over the long-term. I ended up misplacing the electric cord recently, which required extra steps from Room & Board to reorder and replace. Their customer service was excellent: they were communicative, responsive, and made every effort to replace the cord as quickly as was possible so I could resume use of the desk. I have had a similarly positive experience with any issues we have had with their furniture: they are responsive, kind, and work to make it right. After having purchased furniture in the last years from a few other local companies, Room & Board has stood out to us as excellent, and a trusted company. Decent quality furniture, I've found the build quality better overall than fellow Twin Cities-based modern furniture maker Blu Dot, though the designs at R&B tend to be a little more conservative. My issue are the unnecessary delays. I've had the same shelf order delayed twice now. It's not unusual for a customer to rely on purchases simply arriving when they are supposed to, and a company that cannot manage to deliver is one that cannot be fully recommended. Update: 12/02/2020: They've just added another delay. It's now long over a month overdue. The initial reply had an insulting appeal to their American "manufacturers" and "craftspeople" ....does that mean Americans are worse at producing things on time? I purchased a desk from Room and Board. After conversations with a sales person, we both decided that it would be best to cancel the order. This person stated that a check would be mailed to my home in 7-10 business days. It never arrived, and I began a series of calls over the next 6 weeks to try to get this refund check for $900. Each of the four customer service representatives told me that the check had been sent and that I needed to be patient. This response was given even after six weeks of waiting. Finally, I contacted the MN Office of the Attorney General and filed a complaint. The next day, a customer service representative contacted me by phone and said that Room and Board was going to stop payment on the first check and sent a new check. The check arrived in two days. My question is, do you want to give your business to an organization that stonewalls you for six weeks to get your refund? This was a substantial amount of money and it should not take contacting a legal office to get treated fairly. I will not give this business my money ever and will discourage my friends from purchasing from Room and Board. read more

While Room and Board furniture is more expensive than many stores it's definitely worth it if you like the simple, clean styles. Today we furnished our new home between here and their outlet store. In our downsizing we've sold Room and Board furniture we bought 15 years ago at remarkable prices...a testament to their quality. Today we had the pleasure of meeting their salesperson, Mark. We've been long-time, loyal supporters of Room & Board and have spent thousands of $$,$$$ in their stores over the years. We've had very few service issues and generally good customer service. However, we've soured on R&B after contacting them about an obvious structural/design defect in a set of SIX Dorian Dining Room Chairs we purchased. The chairs have NO support bar across the top of the seatback, so ALL of them are splitting apart and CANNOT BE REPAIRED. We've had several highly experienced furniture repair people look at the chairs and they fully agree the chairs are defective, yet R&B refutes there's a problem and refuses to stand behind their product. Coincidentally, they no longer sell this chair. We spent over $1200 on this set and they will all end up in the TRASH rather than lasting for years had there not been a defect. VERY DISAPPOINTING experience. We no longer support this company. read more

I think it's pretty easy to guess why...Yelpers love the quality and style of the RnB, but not the price tag! Yes, falling in love only to realize the object of your affection is out of your league can be totally devastating so I can understand why we may shy away from entering...but I KNOW you browse the catalogue! My favorite part about shopping at Room & Board is the free coffee and cookies. Damn good coffee and delicious, soft sugar cookies...mmm None the less, the furniture. I moved up to Minneapolis just this past September. I can't believe I've been living my life without Room & Board. I know I need to check out the outlet store, but I've purchased a few items at the store on France. And it was all in all a great experience. All my questions were answered. They took care of my order in store quite swiftly. The delivery guys were fantastic. Seriously, these guys were good at what they do, and very respectful of my home. And my sales person even called me to make sure everything was delivered okay, and to make sure i was happy with everything. I'm loving my new furniture. read more

Showroom furniture is beautiful. Most of the staff were very accommodating and answered my questions. I made a last-minute change in my decision and the guy I worked with was super helpful. What soured my experience was when I asked an older gentleman on the ground floor about changing my decision. He was rude and I did nothing to warrant his unprofessional tone. I did purchase the item anyway. When a customer spends $3600 with you, gratitude and overall nice customer service would be appreciated. I know that I will enjoy my purchase for years to come (hence me leaving 3 stars instead of 1) but I do not feel comfortable coming back into this store. read more

I (heart) Eams lounge chair. Its has modern and classic stuff, very good selection, allthough the people there can be a bit pushy at times and they only have one sale all year at their retail outlet, thats on new years day. BURRRRR. I enjoy the selection and size of the store (two floors) and the location and parking (private lot) but even I think a $6,000 wingback chair is realy cool but too much in these economic times. read more

The quality of Room & Board furniture seems to have dropped. I also ordered a couch with fabric I am not in love with only because it would be shipped much faster than custom fabric. Room & Board set the delivery date. Then I got an update saying it would be delayed. OK, I can handle one delay. Another month goes by and I get another message indicating yet another delay. Unacceptable. Room & Board lured me in with the first date. Missed that date. They have now missed the 2nd date it set. This COVID supply chain excuse is getting very old. I'm not buying it. They have no trouble jacking up the prices. This company just can't deliver on its promises. The customer service agent gave me some song and dance about how proud they are that over 90% of their furniture is made in the USA. WHO CARES. If you can't deliver, it doesn't matter does it? Don't you think people purchasing from Room & Board already know it's made in the USA? Really poor customer service agent! I'm pretty much done with this company. Next time I buy furniture I'll look to a company that can actually meet its promises. read more

Update 11/18/17: R&B continues to shine. Large armoire delivered & not a hint of complaint from the delivery men, despite the daunting prospect of bringing a heavy, bulky piece up a winding staircase that appeared far too small to accommodate the purchase. They achieved the task, set up the piece, and as usual ensured I had no questions. Even took extra care to put felt bumpers on the back of the piece so neither it, nor my wall would be damaged by future moves. I only wish R&B had a removal service for moving the pieces out and to my next home, as I doubt the movers will be this careful. The folks at the 800 number were stellar, as usual when I called with some care questions about my new piece. I am so pleased to do business w R&B. Will absolutely continue. Fantastic customer service. I have always been treated as though I am the most important person in the world, even though all of my purchases over the years have been relatively small compared to what many people spend here. I even had to call the other day right before store closing to alter an purchase, and the associate not only ensured all the details were taken care of and the correct item was ordered and set for delivery (original mistake mine) but took the time to fix my mistake despite the store closing, and trying to take care of customers in the store. The associates on the 800 line are always knowledgeable and friendly as well. I almost wish I wasn't having such great experiences at this store and they weren't giving me reasons to keep going back - my budget would thank me! I ordered 3 white metal cooper benches, and 2 of the 3 came with obvious welding marks right down the center of the benches. I communicated my dissatisfaction of the defects to R&B, and they agreed to replace them. Upon bringing the benches all the way back, and picking up the new replacement benches, the replacement benches had the same welding marks. Room & Boards explanation was that "these marks are going to be on all cooper benches". Why they would even agree to replace the benches knowing that the replacements would have the exact same issue is beyond me. Whats especially frustrating, I have bought these same exact benches 3 years ago (2 of them), and they are perfect, not a single welding mark is there. Room & Board has completely wasted my time, and patience. Shame on them for not caring enough to understand the issue completely. read more

Over the years we have purchased several items from Room and Board. We love the modern simple designs of so many of the pieces they carry. With that said, it seems like we have had some type of quality issue with most of the pieces purchased. Most recently we purchased a sectional sofa that we really liked design wise. After we had it home for just a few weeks we noticed the sofa material began to pill and frizz after very little wear. We always try to take care of our furniture and we were amazed to see how quickly it started to wear. After a few attempts to get Room and Board to take responsibility for this issue the only response they gave to us was to buy a sweater shaver to try to fix the problem. We were shocked to hear the lack of customer care they displayed towards our problem. Not to mention that the fabric was suggested during our consultation with the room and board employee. I visited the R&B showroom in Edina, MN today. Really disappointing experience. I needed some measurements on a sleeper sofa. I walked around the store for over 40 minutes and no one offered to help me. I did find a tape measure lying around and took my own measurements, but I still had questions. As I left the store in complete frustration I see four sales people standing by the front door. When I left, not one person said thanks for coming in or goodbye. I called the store to share my disappointing experience and talked to the manager named Charlie. Although he did apologize and I appreciate it, he told me they were shorthanded. He must not have been listening to me, I'll reiterate - FOUR people were standing by the front door. Maybe he should actually listen instead of trying to come up with a excuse that's insulting. I am going to reach out to R&B online to see if I can get some questions answered. If not, I can buy an overpriced sofa plenty of places in the cities. read more

Average items friendly sales team but who wants to wait forever for a product. The table will be ready in 6 wks, the table top in 4 wks, and the bench in 10 wks. If I want them delivered together I have to pay each time a delivery charge. I prefer Restoration Hardware where my items have always been ready ahead of time by 2-5 wks estimated date and if they seperate the deliveries and come to my home 3 times, I still only pay once. read more

I had an issue with a Room and Board product and it was resolved so successfully that I would like to commend the company for their attention to quality construction and customer satisfaction. We like R and B furniture and have quite a lot of it. We were disappointed when an upholstered sofa developed a sagging arm. We only learned why this was when a repair company took the arm apart. It was made with a fragile horizontal surface and that area needed replacement. I should have called Room and Board when I first noticed this problem as I now realize that they would have fixed it but it didn't enter my mind to phone them as the sofa was about three years old. In any event, it was surprising that the sofa had been constructed in this way. Upon contacting a very alert and smart customer service person at R&B, I was informed that this construction was unacceptable to them and the vendor had been made aware that this. (We note that we have a love seat of the same design and fabric which was purchased at the same time. The arms of that piece are very sturdy so we do believe that the sofa problem was an anomaly.) The customer service person reimbursed us for the cost of the repair. That was certainly generous and not in any way required. What I have learned from this experience is that Room and Board is an ethical company that goes above and beyond to offer products that can be expected to be durable as well as of good design. When I first came into the Edina, MN store which was recommended to me I thought the furniture was ok and very pricey. I was able to find what I needed and at the store someone nice helped. I cannot recommend this store to others and I would not buy anything else from them because of what happened. First, after the furniture was ordered attitudes change. I kept getting the run around on the delivery date. The store manager I talked to about the delivery issue was rude and had no business being a store manager. The customer service I received was horrible. He told me if I didn't like it he could cancel the order. I called corporate and talked to his boss and got what I wanted which was the furniture delivered as promised. The lady I spoke to on the phone was very accommodating and the lame store manager never tried to remedy the problem. read more

Awful customer service. I ordered an in-stock item and chose a 2 week window for delivery. They were supposed to call me 2 days ahead of the delivery to pinpoint a delivery date, and then the day before to give me a time block. I never received any phone calls or emails after my initial confirmation. One day, out of the blue but within my 2-week window, I received an email saying the driver was at my house and if I didn't call him directly within 5 minutes he was leaving. I called the number immediately, which was about 20 minutes after the email was sent, and no one answered. I called customer service and they wanted to reschedule me for another 2 week window which could mean 3 more weeks until delivery. They claim they didn't have a phone number for me, but this wasn't my first delivery from them. I looked up my old order (same name, home address, and email) and they had my home and cell numbers (which also hadn't changed). Customer service had told me that the driver had moved on to other cities and there was nothing they could do. When the driver returned my call, I found out that was not the case and they had more deliveries in my city. How odd. A week ago I get a phone call from a woman named Lily (phone # 612 752 1174) asking me if I would like to participate in a market research interview about the R&B catalog. After asking a few questions, she informs me I'm qualified to participate (presumably because, among other things, I've purchased somewhere north of $15,000 in product from R&B)--and tells me I will receive a confirmation email within 48 hours and packet of materials in a few days and will need to be able to view things via webex. All sounds super fun--and then...nothing! Absolute crickets. And the number Lily gave me to call her back at (see above) does not connect to anything. A dead end. Very fishy. Hey Room & Board--what gives? Is this a scam? Or how you treat customers? Very odd--and leaves a sour taste about the R&B brand and future purchases. Do tell what's up.... read more

This is our 2nd couch from Room and Board. The first couch lasted 16 years. And actually, it was white so it was more the stains that made us get a new couch. 2nd couch is even more fantastic! The last two times that I have ordered furniture that requires their delivery, it has been stressful and frustrating. They ask you to select a day that would be available for delivery and that you can also provide a preference as to when you would like the delivery made. I learned that the hard way the first time because the associate didn't tell me about the preference piece. Now, the second time, I told the associate that I would prefer the afternoon, but that I ABSOLUTELY could not be available between 9:00am-10:30am on the day of delivery that I selected due to a work meeting. She said she put that note on my account for the logistics team to review. Guess what happened....I get a delivery confirmation from 8:00am-10:00am for the day. So UNBELIEVABLY FRUSTRATING!!!!! I really like Room & Board furniture, but the customer experience they deliver at times just should not happen considering they are an upscale, premium furniture provider.
