Ron's Garage is great! I brought my car in for a second opinion on my brakes. I had brought it to another auto repair shop in the area that told me I needed new front brakes. I made an appointment with Ron's Garage and they got my car in right away. They checked the brakes and did their complimentary 30 (or so) point inspection. 30 minutes later they brought me back to the garage to show me what they found. Turns out I wasn't even close to needing new brakes on my car. They could've easily lied and agreed with the other shop...and I would've bought some new brakes from them. But they didn't because they are honest people. They did find an issue with my transmission during their inspection. I had recently had a new transmission put in my car, so took it back to the dealership who confirmed the issue and are in the process of repairing it. So not only are they honest, but their mechanics are smart! Finally, they told me up front that they would charge me for 0.25 hours of work to take a look at the car. After they looked at my car, showed me what they found, and were told that I'd take my car to the dealership to get the transmission issue resolved, they waived the charge! I would highly recommend Ron's garage for their honestly, intelligence, and quick service! read more

While I'm certainly no mechanic I do know my way around cars and I have to say that my experience here certainly tracked what some of the other reviewers have described with apparent upselling. Had some tires installed here, which went well enough, but was then told that the "steering seized." Since that's not actually a thing people use to describe suspension in my experience, I then asked that somebody show me what they were talking about. Turns out the tie rod adjusters were seized and they recommended the tie rod be replaced--fair enough. The vehicle is well maintained and I regularly do preventative maintenance so I thought that's all they'd quote me for. Nope--they also recommended a full replacement of the drag link (I can tell you this was not seized), a new battery (with $85 for labor for a 5 minute job I normally do myself in the AutoZone parking lot), complete fluid changes (including transmission fluid every 30k miles which is--quite frankly--absurd unless you're driving a taxi or Ferrari), new spark plugs, and new filters (but not the cabin air filter, which they incorrectly told me my vehicle doesn't have). Grand total on the recommended work? A sneeze under $5,000. I spent the night wondering if my vehicle was actually falling apart and then ran the quote past a mechanic friend in the morning. He just about shot coffee out of his nose--according to him about 1/5 of that was appropriate and even that was being offered at a premium. I'd like to give folks the benefit of the doubt here but having read the reviews here I get the sense my experience is not unique. I won't be going back. read more

While my car was into Ron's Garage they broke one of the lug studs. When Todd (their main front desk guy) told me this I couldn't believe it. He checked their records, and said that this has only happened to my car once before. I checked my own records, and this is the FIFTH time they've broken a lug stud on one of my vehicles. I've heard so many excuses from their shop as to why too - everything from blaming the last shop to work on it (which sometimes was them!), to blaming Subaru or Toyota for having bad studs, to "it just happens". All of this is utter BS. To add insult to injury, they want to charge me $219 to fix a problem that they created. Seriously? My vehicles have been professionally serviced for nearly 30 years. No other shop has EVER broken a lug stud on any of my vehicles. Not once. When I moved to Ann Arbor Ron's Garage was nearby, so I gave them a shot, and they broke a lug stud on my very first visit for a simple oil change and tire rotation. I should have realized then they were either incompetent or up to something shady. Since moving away from Ann Arbor none of the other shops I've been using has ever broken a lug stud. Not once. The logic is really quite simple. Either their technicians don't know what they're doing, or they're doing this on purpose to scam people, or they simply don't care what they do to people's cars. As long as they can charge them over-the-top prices, who cares? Whatever the case, there is no excusing their actions and their attitude. They broke my car, they won't take any ownership of it, and they want to charge me to fix it. No. They broke more than a lug stud - they broke trust. They will never see any of my vehicles ever again, and I recommend you stay away too. read more

I went here for a simple oil change. The technicians failed to put the oil cap back. When I called them, they told me I'd have to leave the vehicle! I went over to get the oil cap, but all the technicians were at lunch, and it would be an hour before thot back. Apparently, you need to go to auto technician school to give me back my oil cap. Ron's garage is awful. I took it in for a simple oil change. They told me I needed to allow them to take apart my car to reach my engine because there was a problem. They said I needed to do this once a year as maintenance. (take apart my car to reach my engine as maintenance... REALLY?) I refused. As soon as I left, I noticed a never heard before rattling sound. It persisted. I finally called a friend who worked at a car shop two hours into Ohio. I took it there. He looked at it and said someone had unscrewed the radiator shield and that a part of it look like it had been purposely damaged. He fixed it for me for a minimal charge and told me never to there again. They are a dishonest shop. I am fairly sure if I had been a man, they would not have tried this. Anyone who seems to not know about cars will be ripped off here. read more

I needed to have my ignition switch fixed. I was asked how much I was willing to spend. The quote came in at exactly that amount. I call that more than a coincidence. They needed the car twice because they didn't have the parts. The fix was poor. Now my left blinker doesn't shut off automatically and the car doesn't let me know if I left the keys in the ignition when I shut it off and open the door. Communication was impressive; mechanics were the pits. Stay away from this place. read more

Not only do they OVERCHARGE at this place, they are potentially FRAUDS looking to take advantage of people who don't know any better. I got my first oil change here after moving to Ann Arbor. The car is old, so when they told me that my transmission fluids needed to be changed, I believed them. But there was also a "bolt mysteriously missing" so they charged me for replacing that, too. The cost was over $400, and I told myself, "fine, I'll pay it. But I have my eye on them." Upon my second oil change 3-4 months later, they told me I needed a new spark plug and that it would cost $200 to replace. Red flags were going off in my head so I said: no thanks, I'll get it repaired next time. On the positive side, they email you a review of the inspection with pictures. So I compared the picture they took of the spark plug to pictures online of spark plugs that were in need of replacement. They looked nothing alike. So I decided never to go back and just get it checked out at the next oil change, somewhere else. THREE DAYS LATER my car battery died without warning. I had only owned the car for 1.5 years at that point, so I didn't know the battery's age. But I checked the inspection from Ron's, and it said my battery was completely fine. So it was very suspicious that, after saying no to the spark plug, my battery was suddenly dead three days after a full inspection from Ron's. I called AAA and got a new battery on the spot from a local mechanic. When I told him my experience at Ron's (and the $200 estimate for a spark plug replacement) he was completely shocked. He shook his head and said the whole situation sounded very suspicious -- you never know. So, that's my word of warning. I can't help thinking that if I was a man or had better knowledge of car mechanics to negotiate their diagnoses and prices, they would have treated me better. read more

I took my car to Ron's Garage for a muffler and rear brakes. They said I needed all 4 brakes, the muffler, and the exhaust manifold. $1629. AND they wanted to charge me $80 for the estimate if I didn't use them (but Ron said "I'm not gonna argue" when I refused.) I took it to Mallek's auto. Rear brakes and muffler. Said there's a little bit of leaking exhaust but nothing that needs fixing at the moment. $572. Ron's Garage tried to rip me off for over a grand. Stay away from them. read more

Both my sister and I have been using Ron's garage for quite a while. It is an OK service, I do not wish to disparage them. There isn't a super cheap garage out there doing expert service, realistically, and I understand paying competent professionals fairly will cost. All that has been OK. However, not going back. I understand customer service is difficult and there is a certain contingent among the public who will never be satisfied with anything you do as a service provider. That has not been the case with us. In our case, because my sister is a worrier she asked (Todd) whether the car should be safe to drive in a couple of days out of town because I had to drive her to her hospital surgery in Royal Oak (rather far), and she said that there was no chance to bring the car in before the surgery . The issue was a dashboard light that had come on (it was turned "off" while at this visit to Ron's). The answer given was "You can drive it. But if the light does come on again, it will need diagnostics." Since she clearly indicated the car could not be brought in for repair prior to surgery, this seemed fairly reassuring; it seemed ok to bring the car in afterward. No, we did not expect an ironclad, psychic guarantee of the entire future, though Todd informed us afterward that that's what we were expecting from him (not true). We just needed to hear appropriate cautions from someone who knows about cars while we do not. Just as Belle Tire will suggest not driving on a tire, an expectation of receiving information about suggested levels of caution is NOT a request to know in advance the exact date, time, and location of the event when a tire will fail. The level of caution advisable for driving was lost in the reply we were given at Ron's. However, she stopped by again today (surgery is tomorrow morning) to ask about the air conditioner which suddenly failed, and with both Ron and Todd out for lunch she spoke with the technician. He said not to drive the car, except (maybe) locally. That was a clear statement. Later, we called Ron's to ask them to perhaps give clearer warnings about safety risks, e.g something more like "might be best not to drive except locally" or such, because their communication, however unintentionally, ended up misleading . Todd's reception was to take the request out of context, as if we suggested we needed him to guarantee how the car would behave at any time under any circumstances, and that he "does not have a crystal ball." He considered it impossible that he might have phrased things better, with advisable cautions clearer. What he must have meant (I guess), looking at it retrospectively, was that if the light comes on it cannot be driven. But the words used did not communicate that. His statement seemed to be that diagnostics were appropriate at some time once the light came on again. I had asked my sister to call about this to explain the confusion, and she was already upset because there was no Uber and no rental cars available at this last moment. She was facing surgery cancellation and is in pain. Todd's only response was to metaphorically slam the door, very offended because her voice was raised a bit. She had been crying but she was not screaming at him, just upset. He raised his voice a bit too, angry and dismissive. It was obvious that the issue could not possibly be the communication he gave, it seemed that any reason to be unhappy with anything at Ron's is out of the question, so that an unhappy customer is seriously out of line. He hung up after I took the phone and began to (very) calmly explain that all we desired was greater clarity about precautions for cases such as this . Ron's Garage is not evil nor incompetent nor anything like that, just unwilling to listen if there is any hint of fault or shortcoming from them. I guess those never happen, and suggestions otherwise are categorically insulting. read more

I had a great experience at Ron's garage. After our old garage got a new owner, we found the prices had gone up and the service was slower. They were friendly and professional when I dropped my car off and I left knowing what to expect. They followed up later in the day with an emailed inspection report, outlining what needed immediate attention and what was recommended based on manufacturer recommendations for my vehicle/age/mileage. In the follow-up call to discuss what work was to be done, I never felt pressured in any way and hung up comfortable with the work to be done and felt the price was very fair. I took my vehicle in due to a strange sound which turned out to be quite minor and easily repaired. I was charged 1/2 hour labor for diagnosing issue, repairing it, and providing me a overall diagnostic of the vehicle. I was informed about pricing upon booking appt which is fine. They were very nice and friendly and professional which was great. The not so great part was the pricing -- comparable service of differential fluid change with synthetic oil was less expensive at dealership. read more

Took my car in to get some suspension issues fixed so I could tow a small trailer. They came back with a report listing over $4,000 worth of repairs. The report was prioritized and listed the suspension issues as one of the lowest priority items. They then insisted I needed everything else done first. Went to a different shop in Ann Arbor for a second opinion and this shop got the suspension work done plus a couple other minor tune-ups for only $800. I would not trust Ron's Garage. read more

I'm not a typical review writer, but I had such a great experience that I felt it necessary. I dropped my car off last evening for a rubbing/grinding noise when I was turning. They diagnosed the problem, fixed my car, and I had my car back by the end of the next business day. Also, the guy at the desk even stayed a few minutes late so I could pick it up before closing! So the oil light in my beater 2007 Saturn Vue comes on. (I love my beater Saturn, not trying to insult her/him/they.) We put oil in. Oil light comes back on 2 weeks later. I'm thinking oil leak, right? I take the car to Ron's Garage based on the good online reviews. MISTAKE. Instead of putting the car up on the lift and quickly determining the problem is just a corroded, rusted oil filter, Ron's artistes de automobile conduct an unrequested, unwanted TEN POINT INSPECTION of the vehicle - which includes an oil leak detection dye job (NOT NECESSARY) plus quotes for ALL the maintenance we've deferred over the past few years, because, did I mention, this is an old beater of a car? They hand me an estimate for seventeen separate jobs on the car for - get this - $2,615.00. TWO THOUSAND SIX HUNDRED and FIFTEEN DOLLARS. "Transfer case fluid change? Huh? Rear differential fluid change? What the ---" Well, obviously I get the hell out of there as fast as a leaky old Saturn Vue can get me. (I did unfortunately have to pay them for an air conditioner recharge....more on that later). And because the car's oil is now just pouring out as fast as we pour it in, I have it towed (thanks AAA membership) to a guy I TRUST in Dexter. Mark's Auto. Where they promptly replace the corroded filter and replace the oil. And, they tell me that the air conditioner issue is a compressor issue and really, there's no reliable way to fix it because GM doesn't make parts for Saturns anymore. So that $158 recharge was a waste of money. Here's the kicker. Total bill from Mark's for the oil change and filter? $35.48. THIRTY FIVE DOLLARS and 48 CENTS. Moral of the story: Don't blindly trust online reviews. I think Ron's Garage gets good reviews mainly because people are bringing in newish cars and they know that every little itty bit of maintenance will be done - even if it's not completely necessary. Peace of mind for the highly risk-averse person for whom money is no object. That's not me. Anyway, me and my little beater Saturn are happily back on the road - and the one thing Ron's Garage recommended that probably SHOULD be done? Front strut replacement? Yeah, I won't be getting that done at Ron's Garage. read more

My dealer told me I needed an oil bypass valve assemblage. I did some research and only needed the oil bypass valve. This appears to be an issue with some Jeeps and Dodges from 2010-2013 or so. Dealerships will only replace the whole assemblage which clocks in above $600. I showed the mechanics at Ron's a video of the problem and they ordered the part, fixed it for $85, and did it in under three hours. I was very pleased. read more

I took my 2008 Escape in to Ron's Garage today after I was told that I needed new front struts and they would be $700. Turns out I didn't need struts at all, but front sway bar links (much less expensive, thank you!). They also did a full courtesy check on my car and identified every thing that needed to be repaired (just a few minor things, but good to know). I was provided with an e-mail link to see pictures of everything on my car so I could see the issues for myself. Awesome! I had a bad experience at Ron's. I won't rehash all the details, because I don't want to grind the axe. Granted, there was a series of unfortunate problems that were not entirely Ron's fault that made the experience so bad. He told me to park the car across the street, and the car got towed because, as he later told me the businesses across the street are feuding over the parking spaces and one of them must have figured that my car belonged to the other one and had it towed. Okay, so that was Ron's fault. I'm like "he told me to park my car there!" So, I had to pay $100 tow fee. He could have helped with or covered that cost, but no. He didn't even apologize or acknowledge that he had contributed to my grief. There were other complications to getting my car finished, as well and I got the feeling that Ron had had enough of me; his impatience was very thinly veiled -not what I'd expect from a business that some people commend for it's "friendliness". read more

My friend took my car a 2013 chevy with 70,000 miles into this place because he was thinking about buying it. They found over $4600 worth of repairs needed. I was given a copy of these findings and took them to the mechanic I use because some the items potentially involved safety and I did not want to be in a position of selling unsuspecting person a dangerous vehicle. In my master mechanic's opinion the car had no safety issues. He told me he thought that the estimate from ron's was wildly inflated and that there was no basis in fact for most of it. He did find something that ron's missed. The front wheel bearings were starting to go. Ron's had concluded that it was the ball joints. The two repairs are easily distinguishable by a competent mechanic. My mechanic also said one tire was cupped and that the car needed an alignment. While a graduate student at u of m I worked part x as an auto mechanic and got to know the local scene quite well. Personally I would avoid a shop of this type which apparently makes repair estimates on the basis of something other than the facts. Caveat emptor and sic transit gloria mundi as they used to say in late antiquity. read more

Confused and not happy with the owner's attitude. (from google review) The transmission of the car started to give a terrible clicking noise after I dropped the car for brake check. I agreed with the owner that there must have been sth not right with transmission before since the hand brake has to be pulled to fully stop the car when in parking (Other than that, the shift is fine). But there has never been a problem or such noise with transmission for one year until I brought it to the garage, so I think there must be sth they did on the car causing the noise and the garage should be partly responsible. But the owner believes this is just a coincidence for an already broken transmission. What makes me even more uncomfortable is his attitude. He seemed more upset than me from the very beginning (LOL), kept saying"Do not argue with me" "what do you want? you want me to buy you a new car" C'on, he is the person who is speaking loud for most of the conversation and I only think he should be partly responsible. And is it really necessary to break a pen on my face to explain the transmission problem? Can you do better than interrupting me rudely when I got stuck with expression cause I am not native? To be honest, the technicians there were nice and helpful in the beginning and I appreciate their courteous fix of a dent on the door. I do not know much about auto repair, but I just do not understand why the transmission went wrong in the garage after a whole year good drive if they did not do anything wrong. Car needed brake work, new to the area, gave this shop a try. Estimate was $1397.95, did include oil change and stabilizer bar link, which they said needed to be replaced. I considered the estimate quite high and did not have the work done. Replacing rear calipers alone was $668.87. To get my car back I had to pay $104.77 for the oil change and for checking the brakes. I didn't know in advance that there was a charge to check the brakes. Included in the $104.77 was an $8.27 shop supplies fee - for an oil change. read more

I found years ago that when I brought my old cars to him he was honest in assisting me in making a decision about how to proceed even when he did not profit from the interaction.
