It's been a decade since I moved and I've not found a dentist nearly as good . My teeth miss Doctor Rao.

I have anxiety and freak out when it comes to needles and injections. I explained to Dr. Rao and the assistant Tabitha about the anxiety I had with having to get 2 fillings and especially the needle. Both were very patient, calming, and understanding of my feelings and helped calm me. He talked me through each step, reassured me, and made sure I was comfortable. Thank you for that. read more

I recently had really bad tooth pain. I didn't have a dentist in NYC but Dr. Rao was recommended to me by my partner. I went in today for my appointment and was overwhelmed by Dr. Rao and his staff. The receptionist I dealt with, Jessica, was awesome. I had booked the appointment online as a "dental emergency", but I was also overdue for a regular cleaning, and she made that option available when I checked in, which was great and saved me an extra trip. She also let me know right away what my out-of-pocket expenses would be that day. The woman who did the x-rays was beyond friendly, as was the hygienist. I don't know where Dr. Rao finds his employees, but he has done an amazing job finding kind, gracious people who made me feel totally at ease. Dr. Rao himself was wonderful. He is very personable and thoughtful, answering all my stupid questions and letting me know all the time what he was doing and why he was doing it. His manner made a stressful trip to the dentist much easier. I could not recommend Dr. Rao more highly. Well done! read more

My son had both his front teeth cracked in half two days before thanksgiving. We called Dr. Rao's office the day before thanksgiving and they fit us in. Not only did they fix both his teeth and they look beautiful but Dr. Rao was scheduled to leave with his family for thanksgiving but stayed later to finish up my sons teeth. His dedication to his patients is amazing and his talent is phenomenal. God bless him and his wonderful staff for all they did. read more

I've been suffering from an infected wisdom tooth for several days now. Having an irrational fear of the dentist & no dental insurance (I'm interning here, from Ireland), I was in a state of panic coming home on the L train. When I finally plucked up the courage to get off at Dekalb (the stop before my own), I noticed that the clinic was only open for another few minutes... I took a deep breath & walked inside. I can not tell you how pleasant & empathic the receptionist was. I was in a deal of pain & she made me feel at ease. Ron had me in the chair (without an appointment) after just ten minutes (even after closing) & took a series of x-rays, before prescribing an antibiotic & an oral surgeon (to yank that sucker out). The price was also incredibly reasonable - $125 for the lot (I was quoted $380 in Manhattan). If you're looking for a warm, professional & empathic practice, this place is for you. I've lived in small town Ireland for 28 years & have thus zero tolerance for superficiality. Ron could not have been friendlier - a genuine & sincere dentist with an aim to help. Very happy. I have another appointment for 2 fillings in a few weeks so I hope my review doesn't jinx me! I purchased a groupon for $35 for the full x-ray, examination, cleaning package which in my opinion is an excellent deal. Walking up to the building had me sketched out and I was ready to bail on the $35 but figured, what the hell. It looked like it would be dirty and/or cheap and considering the groupon was only $35 I had a feeling I was going to get what I paid for. I was completely wrong. Once inside the office I did a complete 180. The receptionist was very friendly, the place was clean and professional looking. Nothing like the outside. Dr Rao was very personable and I felt like he gave me the attention a patient expects. Six months ago I was told I had 3 cavities with little explanation nor any visuals to base it off of at another dental office. I wanted a second opinion. Dr. Rao showed me exactly what he was looking at and explained why he thought each spot needed to be filled. Only 2 appeared to be fill worthy and he said he would throw in a slight shaving off my 2 top front teeth (which are both chipped and uneven) free of charge. $250 for 2 fillings and a cosmetic fix. I came here yesterday with a LivingSocial deal. My appointment was at 5pm; however, I ended up waiting 40 extra minutes to be seen. That said, I hadn't seen a dentist for 2 years due to lack of insurance. So it was worthwhile just for that. The lady at the front desk was pleasant, cheerful, and fully bilingual (English and Spanish). Dr. Rao was professional and painless. Note that this was my first ultrasonic cleaning---it is a very fast process. I was DONE by 6:10! Even better, Dr. Rao encouraged me to come in next week so he can inspect my night guard at no charge. I can definitely use support in my battle against bruxism. The only thing that did not impress me (besides the wait time) was the pushing of whitening treatments/veneers. I don't think I look like I have money to burn, and obviously I don't if I'm using a discount deal to pay for a regular exam, right? Oh well. Overall it was a positive experience. read more

Dr. Rao and his staff always have the patient's interest in mind, which is a special quality in this city of ours. They are excellent at what they do and the passion is quite evident. I've been impressed with his knowledge of dentistry, his staying on the cutting edge of technology within the profession, and his attention to detail when it comes to giving the patients high-quality service. Doctors can sometimes be stereotyped as not caring........that's not the case here! This doctor and his team are dedicated and obviously love their work and the people that seek out their expertise. I was guided towards Dr. Rao's practice by his numerous 5-star reviews on this site as well as his deal he listed. Although neither his location nor his premises in Brooklyn are particularly swanky or impressive, I chose to believe the reviews and I can say now, post visit, that I am very glad I did. I will be a loyal patient for life. First, the appointment started on time and began with a nurse, whose name I feel remiss in not asking about, took x-rays of my whole mouth. This were nearly instantly fed into this giant laptop computer situated so I could see the results. In my experience this was the most thorough number of x-rays taken. Also, the software neatly arranged the x-rays in a panoramic fashion in two rows, top and bottom. While the nurse was pleasant and seemed to genuinely enjoy her job, Dr. Rao burst in full of charisma, jokes, and an easy going nature that immediately put me at ease. Normally, this is not enough to convince me that I am in good hands, but he also had an aura of genius. Throughout the cleaning, which he did personally, he showed himself to be literate making many allusions. He also let my friend come in and explained to us both many things in a way that suggested he was quite the communicator. He was also educated at NYU. All things considered, not only does Dr. Rao have a world class bed side manner, his intellect, studiousness, and meticulous nature suggest an excellent practitioner. Since I had been generally remiss in taking care of my teeth, I had early one expressed expectations that I would need expensive and thorough work. However, Dr. Rao quickly assured me that this was unnecessary. I did need to get one filling, but that I had gotten rather lucky and dodged many bullets for not having had a cleaning in so long. To me this speaks well of honesty. If all of this is not convincing enough, he maintains a before and after photo booklet showing work he has done to give people a beautiful smile when they had a mouth reminiscent of a Macbath witch. In the waiting room, there was a flat screen television explaining all the complex procedures he is capable of doing and how they work. The photo booklet really does go a long way to convincing me that no matter how bad my teeth get, Dr. Rao might be able to perform a miracle. Finally, he had to work so hard to get rid of my tartar buildup that I was in a bit of discomfort. For no added cost, and very gently, he gave me several locals that numbed me right up and made the rest of the procedure feel so much more comfortable. He was sensitive the whole time to that and my sense of mortification. I would recommend Dr. Rao and his staff to anyone, with any amount of money, of any age group, and any location within travelling distance. read more

I have had a bad experience with dentists in the past which prevented me from going to the dentist for 2 years! Thankfully they found only 1 cavity. Dr. Rao and staff made me feel extremely comfortable. Super nice and welcoming. They let you pick your own music to listen to while getting worked on and the prices are fair! I really wanted to like this place!! It's in a great area , the receptionist was nice at first. I called the same day and they took care of my husband in almost no time.... GREAT! Then they do the check up and X-rays are done . After we are told by doctor that he was too young to remove his molar that he will try to clean/fix it . Then he sent the receptionist to translate since she knew more Spanish to explain I guess better to my husband. The doctor stepped out at this point. She then explained to us if we wanted to continue the process it would be $525 including the X-ray just to kill the nerve so it could stop aching . I then asked her that if we did decided to do it that what would be the process after. She then explained to me that she didn't want to tell me because then I would be overwhelmed about the whole thing . I told her then to go on and she said then that only for killing the nerve and the X-ray today would be $500. (She would discount $25) That in 3 weeks to come back to fill in the molar which would be $1400 and after that there would be another appointment to put the crown which would be another $475. I then asked he if there was anything more affordable that she can do since he had no insurance. She then suggested to take out a dental credit card if I had good credit. Also, she that this is Brooklyn, that in manhattan it would be much more expensive. After my husband and I discussed for a while and he was the one telling me that for 1 molar it was a lot. I reflected on the situation and I then agreed as well . We told her that we wanted to see other options and to provide us the X-ray so she did. When I was going to check out she asked me how I was going to pay card or check. It was $125 and she said she was only charging me for the x-ray not for the consultation. I then told her I had a Groupon (wish I thought it was but it was actually a yelp deal) because I had found them online. The receptionist then told me that they don't take Groupon. I then showed the the deal that I had bought on Yelp. It's was $125 for 250 deal. She then took my phone and showed the manager( Barbie blond hair lady) and they took 10 min trying to figure the whole situation. She later honored the offer. And I then asked since it was only $125 don't I get the rest for credit since I will still have over left from the $250 deal. The reception told me no you did not pay us , you payed them "we don't get that money." I then asked the manager again and she said yes that they get paid that but since they only charged me $125 but in reality they had to charge me $360 because it was an emergency. Mind you there was NO LINE! At this point I'm really fed up but kept calm because I had a really bad cold and a huge headache. So I was like ohh ok and went along. To tell you the truth, I work in sales and actually I'm a top sales person. I know that these people were LYING! I was EXTREMELY disappointed because this doctor has a lot of awards based on what you see on yelp and probably has great outcomes. But the skyrocket prices lower the ethics of his business and his work. Maybe I would recommend if you have insurance. Because I assure you the will really take advantage of it . Haha. I would not recommend based on my experience. I always give my honest opinion. And this place really upset me that they have NO sympathy and will overcharge. I've had to visit this dentist three times and this seems especially ineffective and inefficient. first appointment - new patient exam where basically nothing happened other than I met the dentist. a cleaning could not be done that day because there was no hygienist available. 2nd appointment, i got my teeth cleaned and was told that i needed a bite guard to prevent my teeth from becoming damaged due to grinding them while asleep. so I make an appointment to have the molds for the bite guard. go in for that appointment and they can't do anything because they said it wasn't approved / hadn't yet been submitted to my insurance... wtf? so once again I left with nothing being done. the receptionist said she would speak to my insurance and call me the next day with an update as far as cost of the bite guard if not covered 100% by my insurance but guess what? no phone call. not surprised. so if i continue with this office, i will have to GO BACK FOR A FOURTH TIME?? i seriously don't have time for this. they have wasted enough of my time. get it together guys. it can't possible be that hard to run a dental practice. read more

I purchased a coupon through some type of local deal for a cleaning and x-rays. I hadn't been to the dentist in probably a year. I was horrified when Dr. Rao told me that whoever did my fillings did a crappy job and that I have cavities underneath the majority of them. He suggested taking out the current fillings and having them all re-done. (Several thousand dollars of work that needed to be completed ASAP!!) I then decided to purchase dental insurance for the work and it ended up that Dr. Rao would not be covered under the new insurance. I went to a fabulous dentist in Manhattan who took one look at my mouth and stated that he was extremely skeptical about all of the so called "cavities", but he would make a decision after seeing x-rays. I ended up having a single surface cavity that I didn't even need Novocain for. My new dentist stated that some dentists are struggling with the economy and are trying to lie, cheat and steal to get more work. I am SO grateful to have gotten a second opinion. I would never return here!!! read more

I went in a while back, the appointment to get in took about a month. I went in at the end of the day, and the receptionist said "I called you earlier to reschedule, we are running late"... I don't answer phonecalls from numbers I don't recognize. She handed me a clipboard and went about her business entering information on her computer screen. I waited for her to say more. she didn't. .. I said "So, is it still on then, or are we rescheduling?" " we will do the exam, but probably not the cleaning. we'll see" well, nice to meet you too!After an approximately 45 minute wait, I was given xrays.The guy was nice, I liked him. In between those and seeing Dr. Rao, he started covering the equipment with plastic stuff, an obvious sign that they were closing up shop and getting ready to go home. Dr. Rao comes in, and first does a massage of my neck for cancer. I think I went to his website beforehand and noticed mention of the fact that he was all about cancer screening. fine. I have a mole on my face which is I suppose somewhat exceptional, but I've come to terms with it and some people love it. He zeroed in on that and filled out a medical form that he wanted a doctor to sign saying they had checked it for cancer. I appreciate the concern, but I'm here for my teeth. ( and for christ sakes - it's a mole. When I say exceptional, it's only in the fact that it's raised a little. It's not like I'm growing a mushroom out of my face.) He prodded around in my mouth a little, but no mention of worries over cavities, cleaning, anything at all related to oral hygiene. Then he said to xray guy "So, she's off for the cleaning?" the guy shook his head no. Because obviously, they were trying to close and get out of there. Dr. Rao says "okay, just set up an appointment for the cleaning, see ya!" I go up front to schedule, and they tell me that I in fact can not make an appointment for the cleaning until I get the medical waiver for my mole signed off by a doctor. I question the ridiculousnes of this, and someone else tells me it's because I checked a box on my sheet that says I'm borderline anemic, which was never discussed. I kind of wanted to scream at them, but it happens that I coincidentally had a DR..appointment scheduled already and rather than argue, figured I'd get the stupid thing signed and make the appointment later rather than argue. When I did go back and reschedule, none of this was brought up.Nor did I bring it up, despite the fact that I jumped through their hoop and got the thing signed. It was as if I didn't have a cancerous mole and was not anemic at all. The receptionist was even friendly. I felt like an okay job was done scraping the plaque off of my teeth. The overall experience that day was as if I had gotten a brief exile from the leper colony I clearly belong to normally. I was humbled by their normalcy! I like that they didn't try to sell me on braces or whitening, or all of that BS, and I have worried in the past that dentists have made up concerns with my teeth to make money off of unnecessary procedures. None of that went on, and I'm a big fan of that. But overall, I can't say I'm a big fan of this place... read more

Dr Rao is a great dentist. He's wonderful with my daughter but I have to update my review because since I've written it many things have changed & gone in a negative direction. First, don't expect to been seen within 20-30 min of your actual appointment time unless you're the first appointment of the day. The last two times I went it took 45 min to get called in to the room & the second time almost an hour. Third, don't expect to get an appointment if you need one sooner then 5 weeks. They've become increasingly busy and can't seem to handle the volume of patients & it takes forever to get an appointment. And third, if you don't like to be spoken to in a rude manner then you shouldn't call to make an appointment. The person answering calls and taking appointments is extremely rude! She speaks in an unfriendly manner & if you happen to question something that you don't understand prepared to be talked down to as if you did something wrong. The staff needs some training in customer service and they need to hire some more help to handle all their patients. read more

Best dentist I've been to in a long time ,put trying to get an appointment is a killer,they'll give u a appointment two months from the day you call then call you back a couple day before and cancel it and reschedule you for another two month from that day.Had to change my dentist just because of that. read more

These guys are a victim of their own success. I choose them from Yelp because of the good reviews but it was a nightmare. They take your appointment as a light suggestion and 2 of my appointments were cancelled at the last minute and I suspect the Dentist has better things to do then treat the patients who were already scheduled. It took 4 months to be seen to have my tooth fixed as in addition to cancelled appointments they have weeks of vacation. Should you appointment actually go through then be prepared to wait for HOURS.The day finally arrived and Ronald wasn't there again, he has some shoe in dentist who was rattled by the fact the waiting room was filling up. They didn't have any of the correct shades for me, so he just used whatever, giving me a yellowish tinge in my front tooth. I wan't happy, so he proceeded to slap on a lighter color over the top instead of taking out the yellow he put in. It was lumpy and over packed. They were informed about that the terrible work done and I was told to come in so Ronald could fix it. He shaved it down and polished it but a couple of weeks later the whole thing fell off. Be warned, this dentist has become to big for itself and the work has become sloppy and rushed. read more

I may be a little biased since Dr Rao is my brother, however he is the best dentist I've ever had. I grew up with a phobia of dentists, but when my brother became a dentist many years ago, my fears quickly subsided thanks to his chair side manner. He has you feeling comfortable from the minute you step in. He is the only dentist I know of who actually phones you the day following major dental work to see how you're doing. I found Bushwick Smiles as, I think, a living social or google offer and seriously needed a check-up. I had been eating a lot of sugar and started to wonder if the damage was starting to take place. The last few dentists I saw when I had insurance and they were all in Midtown and were so average. Not like going to the dentist is supposed to be a picnic, but give a smile or something. I went for my check-up with Dr. Rao a few weeks ago and he and his staff made me feel so welcome from when I walked in the door. Being a Brooklyn gal, the location of this office is also desirable. Everyone was not only so nice and accomodating, but they really liked their jobs and they like their patients. The receptionist...fantastic. The woman who took my x-rays was delightful, quick and it was the best dental x-ray experience I've had to date. Dr. Rao gave me my first ultrasound cleaning which was super cool. Mostly from this experience, going to the dentist can be a grueling experience and this was like Disneyland. Everyone was smiling and loved being there. This was my first visit and I chose this dentist from Yelp. I'm new to NY coming from CA. I didn't have anyone I could ask for a dentist referral. The parking was a little difficult but I parked and just walked a few blocks. I was greeted with smiles, office was clean and modern. The huge test was professional and nice we actually talked through the whole exam. I didn't get floss and a toothbrush but I guess since my teeth were in good health I didn't need it lol I like to use the toothbrushes for travel. I would recommend this dentist and I have no issues going back in 6 months read more

Dr. Rao was able to see me quickly after I made my initial call to his office. His staff was completely professional and friendly. The receptionist explained all the charges up front when I asked--which were quite reasonable--for cleaning and replacing a filling. I found Dr. Rao himself to be very warm, friendly and was happy to answer all of my questions about the procedures. He didn't feel rushed in his work, and even gave me a local 'swab' anaesthetic rather than a shot when he replaced my filling. He and his staff made me feel welcome, answered all of my questions, had reasonable costs for the procedures (I used to see a much more expensive dentist, so I have a basis of comparison) and, after a pretty crappy experience with another dentist in my network, earned my trust. It's hard to find a dentist who is honest, good at what he does and has a good bedside manner. Based on my experiences with him, Dr. Rao is that guy. read more

I lost my dental insurance and had to find a new dentist while I was in the middle of my implant process. I search several dentist in the area but was hesitant given my experience with dentists. After reading several reviews, I decided to call Dr. Rao. The appointment was schedule a month later but the receptionist ensured that I was guaranteed to be taken care of. When I arrived, she was very helpful with explaining the procedure and expenses. She worked with my previous dentist to obtain my records and scheduled a follow-up appointment right away. My experience was pleasant given the stressful situation I was going through. I recommend them to anyone who is in need of a good dentist with personalized attention. read more

UPDATE TO MY ORIGINAL POST: i am now reporting ronald rao to the state and the better business bureau and whoever else to get this guy's license revoked or at least red flag him. he said for three cavities, he'd charge me $780 (and this was AFTER a so-called "generous" on-the-spot "discount," so it was initially in the low $800 range) other professional consultations said that i only have TWO cavities, NOT three as stated by rao, and the fee would be in the ballpark of $300, as these were surface cavities. DO NOT GO TO RONALD RAO. he is clearly desperate for business, is totally unscrupulous, and these five star ratings are so obviously FALSE. setting foot in his filthy bushwick office is enough to send any sensible client running for the hills. i only went because i had a pre-paid voucher from amazon.com and did not want my money to go to waste. read more

My first visit and followup with Dr. Rao went very smoothly. His staff is very friendly and easy to get along with. The wait time wasn't bad when I went in the morning. I had a couple cavities and they were filled without any pain on my part. My previous dentist would try and hard sell me on invisalign, but I was relieved to have more of a two way conversation with Dr. Rao about what is available. read more

I am one of those people who would rather have open heart surgery than go to the dentist, so finding Dr. Rao was a blessing. It had been years since I had been to the dentist, so of course I need a ton of work, but he has been so great and even made a root canal not so bad. His staff is friendly and very helpful. It also helps that he is located close to my place, but at this point I would travel anywhere in the boroughs to see him. read more

Yay! I am so happy to have found these people. It is a really cheerful office. Everyone is so courteous and professional. They saw me the same day for what we thought was an emergency visit. It turned out to not be urgent but they still gave me a filling and a cleaning. Jessica, the receptionist was So helpful and explained everything about my insurance clearly. Dr. Rao was warm and friendly and explained everything that he was going to do before he did it. I got a filling on a tooth with no Novocain (because I hate the feeling of being numb) and was as comfortable as I could be. All of the hygienists were warm and attentive as well. It feels like an office where people are treated well and really like what they are doing. I have gone to a different dentist every year that I have been in NY. So excited to finally find one that I want to continue to go back to. read more

I found a deal on groupon for an oral exam, x-rays, and a cleaning for like $100. I was a little unsure since it seemed one of those 'too good to be true' scenarios, but I hadn't been to the dentist in about 6 years and read great reviews so I made an appointment. LOVE. Jennifer the receptionist was amazing with handling my appointment time, and was super sweet in person as well. my appointment was for 2, so I showed up at 130 to do paperwork and was in the seat starting X-rays at 1:50. Dr.Rao was so nice, and so funny-I was laughing on the inside even when I had tools and fingers poking around my mouth. He suggested a few optional treatment options for my teeth but wasn't overly pushy and "salesperson-y". I was given a price quote for those options so I can think about it before my next cleaning. I will definitely be making Dr.Rao and staff my go-to for all dental work-they're all wonderful and the office is so convenient, how could I not?! read more

I've been going to Dr. Rao since I was a kid and I absolutely love him. I recommend him to all my friends and family. I would have given him 5 stars but his receptionists are always the rudest people on the planet. I called a couple of days ago and was transferred to 3 different people and finally hung up on. I'm very familiar with the office and there is only one small space for reception. I felt like they were playing a game with me. I'm a patient but also a customer. My business should be appreciated. Also, because he is so popular, it's difficult to get an appointment within the month. Dr. Rao is absolutely awesome and ultimately worth the wait and the lackluster patient/customer service. read more

Great, great dentist. I came into him same day because I could not open my mouth due to an impacted wisdom tooth. Everyone was super nice and very attentive. He ended up referring me to an oral surgeon to have the tooth pulled, but the girls there called and got pricing, and set up my appt with the surgeon. They even called the day my tooth was pulled to see how I was feeling and to make sure everything went ok. They called a week or so later to schedule a cleaning but I couldn't make it because my mouth was still healing for the extraction.
