I've been a patient with The Smilist for a few years now. Previously, I left a phenomenal 5 star review for Dr. Culpepper & my dental hygienist, Richard. Unfortunately, my dentist no longer works here but my dental hygienist is still here thankfully. I recently paid for their Smilist One plan insurance where it consists of 2 cleanings & updated x-rays. They also informed me that other dental services such as fillings, root canals, etc. will be discounted. During my most recent appointment, I was told by the new dentist, Dr. Nadig that I'll be needing one filling & a completely new root canal on a different tooth that already had a root canal done back in 2022 by Dr. Culpepper which he did an excellent job with. I paid lots of money (out of pocket) for my root canal & it was done very recently so it's absurd that I was told I need a brand new root canal on that tooth. Regardless, I went into another dental clinic to get a second opinion & they disagreed about me requiring to get a new root canal or a filling done. Not to mention, The Smilist claims to provide "huge discounts" if you have their own insurance plan but yet, they wanted to charge me approximately $300 for a filling & $3,000 for a root canal lol. How are these discounted prices if the maximum cost of a filling/root canal costs that much in NYC? I initially put a $100 deposit towards the tooth that needed a filling & when I asked to be reimbursed, I was obligated to wait nearly 2 months just to receive a paper check in the mail. Um, it's 2024, who still uses paper checks these days? Tf. Once my Smilist One plan ends, I will NOT be returning back to this place. It's obvious that without Dr. Culpepper or dentists like him, this place is going downhill. read more

After dealing with insurance and everything, The Smilist Dental Greenpoint turns out to be the place that I feel more comfortable to let them take care of my tooth. The most terrible dental experience I've had. I really tried to give this place a chance: I did two teeth cleanings and a whitening which were ok - Richard, you're ok but the rest of you are crooks. I had a crown implant which wasn't necessary (read further below) and was a painful nightmare of an experience. The Smilist is also dishonest with their billing and racks up mysterious bills against you. On my first visit, the dentist (Dr Kirshembaum) told me I needed a crown, and she "had a few minutes" and could do it right there. I trusted her and went with the process, allowing her to drill and put in a temporary crown. When the permanent crown fitting happened she clumsily put it in, and a couple of days later the crown fell out and I was in SO MUCH pain (your tooth nerve is exposed). I had to go back to get it re-fitted on. Every time I came in, the office receptionist would say I owed a lot of money until I question them and made them look deeper. Then they would say that they "figured something out with my account" and that was fine. I was told that the cleanings were completely covered by insurance. I paid for the whitening entirely out of pocket, and for the crown they gave me a detailed sheet showing what insurance would cover and what I would pay out of pocket. To be clear, I paid exactly what was on that sheet and what was communicated to me as owed before procedures were performed, but every time afterwards there was always a high balance. Later on, I learned the insurance denied the coverage of the crown. When I contacted insurance, the rep explained that it was denied because the X rays showed that I NEVER NEEDED A CROWN at all. Months later, I was still in a lot of pain from the crown and reluctantly had to go back. The original dentist never actually checked my bite and fitted/shaved down the crown to fit properly, so my bite was uneven which caused me to bite with full force onto the one tooth with the crown. The new dentist I saw (Dr Culpepper, who had been briefed on my experience) performed the fitting adjustment, but then remarked that I now need a ROOT CANAL on that tooth!! He also conveniently "had a few minutes to do it right there" if I wanted. Ok lastly, my wife went to the Smilist 2.5 years ago for a simple cleaning. We just got a bill in the mail today for over $500 for her with no explanation why! I've held off on posting a review on this place for a while, but this last bill was the final straw. There's more to my experience here (that's what a shit show this place is), but I had to narrow this down for brevity. To this day, my tooth with the crown still doesn't feel right, but I'm not going back to these crooks and I advise anyone else to also AVOID THE SMILIST read more

If you ever want to feel disrespected and invisible this would be an amazing place to visit. The front office manager ignored my presence and chose to attend to the client who walked in about 10 minutes after me (claims she hadn't seen me) not likely as it is a small waiting room and only one other person was present. When I politely stated, "I'm next", she told me to just wait as these people (a couple) had a question. I objected (still polite) and the entitled line jumpers attempted to venture into a verb battle that seemed to entertain the manager as she settled in to watch. Thankfully ,I held on to my dignity and reminded them that I had power to walk out. I don't know why the "manager" felt it necessary to insist on interrupting the dentist during my consultation - he eventually asked her to wait until he was done. Beautiful and warm atmosphere. The office is very clean. The staff is professional and very kind. They are like family to me. Dr. Culpepper is an excellent dentist. He is a very cool dentist. He makes his patients feel at home and comfortable. He is also funny and likes music. He is also very thorough and articulate when it come to his work. If I must say so myself, I am very pleased with the dental work that he has done on my teeth. I would definitely and highly recommend him to others. His assistants Marisa and Mario are wonderful as well. If i can give this place 0 stars i would. I have been going to the smilest Woodside for years and have referred many people from my union to them. The first appointment they called me The day before to try to re-schedule me 2 times. I was then given a treatment plan by the periodontist , with the prices i was supposed to pay out of pocket, everything was great. I then started the treatment plan , and before i was scheduled to do my surgery i got a call saying i have to pay thousands more out of pocket. It was disappointin but the office manager MARIA was very unprofessional. I asked for her bosses email to ask them for my future treatment options and Maria blocked me from the entire smilest dental system. When i went to complete my deep cleanings at the woodside location my number was blocked. I never disrespected anybody there i was just disappointed. She was very ghetto and unprofessional to me. I had a great experience during my first visit at The Smilist in Greenpoint. First impression is that office is very well kept; it's clean, modern and welcoming when you step in. Water and tea are available too, which is a nice touch. The location is accessible and is minutes from the subway. Reception is very helpful and attentive. I worked with Ela to schedule my appointment. She was swift in her response both by phone and e-mail -- something that's appreciated when trying to schedule during the work day. Ela also walked me through my insurance coverage for the procedure so that I understood my benefits before moving forward. I saw Dr. Scott Culpepper at this location who at the get-go, is friendly and has great bedside manner. He answered all of my questions and walked me through the procedure I had done that day (just a cavity filling.) By seeing this dentist, I was able to save two teeth of mine rather than have them extracted which attests to Dr. Culpepper's skill and attention to detail. He also offered great tips on day-to-day dental hygiene/daily maintenance. I'm grateful that I was able to find this location and look forward to future visits with this practice! read more

I had a great experience at this dental office. First, the front desk asked me to fill out the form on my cell phone before the visit so that's contactless. Then they took x ray and Yan the hygienist did a fantastic job, I drink 3 cups of coffee per day and when I say she did a great job I mean it. Lol!! I love my dental assistant Marisa, super friendly and professional, she makes me feel very comfortable at the office. Doctor Culpepper was very knowledgeable and gave helpful advices for taking care of my teeth, he recommended night guard and a crown for my tooth. Very clean office. Came here last year for a simple cleaning and not only was the cleaning horrible but the doctor and hygienist were both just trying to find ways to up sell me on other services and the cleaning was rushed and I left feeling like I had nothing done. They were extremely pushy to the point that I was uncomfortable and knew I was never returning. Not only was the cleaning horrible but they seem to only be interested in billing you as much as they can even while having insurance. Just discovered now that I "owe" them a charge I knew nothing about for a simple cleaning and never once got a phone call from them letting me know any money was owed after billing my insurance. They do not care about you as a patient only how much money they can grab from you. PLEASE AVOID BY ALL COSTS - they are complete scammers and unprofessional. read more

I have been going to the same dentist in LA since 1995 - so this was a big step for me. It started with the typical cleaning and scans, which showed that I had a cavity (which I knew was there because it hurt a bit). I waited awhile and went back to get the work done today. Dr. Culpepper is great - funny, gentle, and skillful. Eli at front desk is a life saver (and money saver) she caught an error where my Smilist plan hadn't been linked to my account - meaning I was getting charged 20% more than I needed to for this service!! One star less, simply because if it wasn't for Eli I would have felt cheated and left with a very bitter taste in my mouth. In other news - my mouth is really numb and that's fun. read more

Found this place on google but I'd like to believe god guided me here. I had a bond to keep the gap in my two front teeth closed like 5 years ago but unfortunetly, it has fallen out. It was the most inconvenient time ever (have a few weddings coming up, vacation, job interview) so I paniced. I googled the nearest dentist who can do bonding. I was nervous that it was going to be too expensive ( no dental insurance ) and not well done. WELL! thank god for Smilist because a. I expected to pay more then the usual but it wasn't so bad. And B. IT LOOKS AMAZING! I forgot the Dr.'s Name but she is there on wednesdays and fridays. She's an angel, gentle and super talented. The receptionist, oh my god. The sweetest and the most informative woman ever! I've never experienced such professionalism and warmth at a dentist before. I'm definitely going back to get a check up and also to see my ladies. I am so happy I found this place. I've had difficulty finding a dentist office I really liked since moving to New York almost 2 years ago so you can imagine my excitement when I found The Smilist. The office is modern, super clean, and very welcoming. The staff are also awesome and very helpful! I am being treated with Invisalign, which I was a little nervous about at first until the staff and Dr. Culpepper reassured me that there is nothing to be nervous about. We went through the process of ordering Invisalign and then once it came, Dr. Culpepper and staff helped with placing the aligners on my teeth and gave an overview of how I can take care of them during my treatment. Unorganized and unnecessary. Came in for an emergency appointment in the beginning of January for trouble I was having with a wisdom tooth. Came in and had the major concerned addressed and was recommended to an oral surgeon, and they answered a few questions on a couple other concerns I've had. Insurance covers everything and leave after being pressured to schedule a "consultation" a month later. I come in for them to have the wrong clients information up as mine and literally tell me everything they already told me a month prior. I even showed them the exact recommendation card specifying what they already said I needed done a month prior and how I already have an appointment set up with the surgeon recommended. At the end of it all I was charged $150 for them to have the wrong information for me and telling me everything they had already a month prior. Makes absolutely no sense and I feel beyooooonnd stupid for even handing over my card for nothing but at that point I was just over it. Would love that money back but I don't know the chances of that but they'll bombard you with texts and emails to leaves a review on the visit so here we are. read more

I am so happy I have finally found an outstanding dentist. I am super picky with my teeth and my sister highly recommended Dr. Culpepper. I had to have a lot of work done on my teeth and was nervous. Avoid this place! When I first visited to set an appointment, the receptionist tried very hard to sell me into an annual subscription program. They were very pushy. I explained that I wanted to try a single appointment first, before committing, which is reasonable. My appointment was for a routine cleaning. When I was seated at the dental chair, the hygienist wanted to take x-rays also. I politely declined, saying I only wanted a cleaning. The hygienist sighed loudly and her tone became unfriendly as she insisted it was required. A couple minutes later, the receptionist arrived asking me to leave because "X-rays are necessary". I got the impression their priority is treating people as potential "sales" not dental patients. Their attitude was rude and unprofessional. I really wanted to like this place, and to support a local business instead of going into Manhattan for dental work (although I guess The Smilist is a chain, not truly a "local business") Anyway, it's too bad, but there's plenty of other places to go in the area. Make sure they take your insurance! I called beforehand where they assured me that they took my insurance. Same when I got in before the appointment. Suddenly after my appointment they tell me that they were wrong and that I now have to pay. The blamed the insurance company which they said gave them the wrong info and that there is nothing else they can do. I asked if they could provide me with the name and info of whom they spoke with at the insurance company but they said no so I have no way to proof that this happened with the insurance company. I would have appreciated them taking some of the responsibility instead of giving the insurance company all the blame and making me pay after I had been told multiple times that my appointment was covered. I am very happy to say these (2) dental visits here in late April 2018 were the most pleasant and professional experience I can remember not only since I have lived in NYC for 17 years -- but even before that in other areas of the US. The office promptly and kindly called me back first -- after researching several options from my new dental insurance - and scheduled a time most convenient to my schedule. The hygienist, Michelle was so professional and caring about my teeth. She took x-rays so patiently and carefully- which were difficult for me- because I always experience extreme g- reflex discomfort. She cleaned my teeth painstakingly and perfectly. My dentist Dr. Culpepper was super knowledgeable, kind, professional and enthusiastic. I had a follow up appt where he fixed my chipped bonded tooth- which looked better than it has in years. He also treated my tooth as it was a work of Art-- spending time perfecting it and examining all ways he could make it look its absolute best. I can't say enough about this office and experience-- Dr. Culpepper and his staff should have a long lasting, award winning lucrative career -- and I thank them all for such a pleasant, and rewarding experience! Dr. Culpepper is not only knowledgeable but a dentist I was able to trust. No one likes getting numbing needles or dental work but everything was as painless as possible. What a fantastic staff at the Smilist Dental. This was my second visit of the year and honestly felt like I found "my dentist office". Briana at the front desk was wonderful and so helpful. Michelle is the bomb.com (had to lol). She truly got me in quickly and did what she had to do and all of this with a smile on her face. Great conversation while I was getting my teeth cleaned. I mentioned on my last visit my gums felt sensitive and she advised that I do a treatment on my teeth, best treatment ever. It was an additional cost, put instantly made my gums feel amazing. My experience at the Smilist was everything I could ask for in a dental experience. The receptionist, hygienist and dentist were all very friendly and positive as well as skilled in their work. The office is very clean and the equipment seems up to date. They take insurance (although I don't have it) but their prices seemed reasonable too. I also felt that the dentist didn't try to talk me into things just because they were more expensive (I had a chipped tooth and I decided to have it filed a little rather than try to have it capped) and I felt respected and cared for overall. read more

If i could give a million stars I would. My dental experience here has been impeccable. Dr. Culpepper is fantastic. Not only does he care for his patients with an incredible sense of urgency, but he's just a fun dude that makes you not only okay with going to the dentist, but he makes me look forward to going. My dentist back at home before i moved to NYC made me feel extremely insecure about my teeth because I grind them and they've grown to be really small. For a couple years now I have only went to the dentist as minimally as possible, because I was made to feel so crazy for what I was doing with my teeth. Not only that, but they tried to sell me ridiculously priced things i didnt need done, using my grinding as the reason to change my mouth, to make a quick buck off of me rather than suggesting solutions at a reasonable price that made sense and worked. However, Dr. Culpepper made me feel completely normal for my OCD and has replaced my temporary crown THREE times in a matter of two weeks whilst waiting for my permanent crown to come in. No charge, no angst, just funny jokes and some Blue Planet on the tv screen while he quickly solves my problem. I have copious amounts of doctors i have to see on a regular basis. Sometimes it is a game of trial and error and finding the right doctor. Somehow I just stumbled upon the Smilist, but I don't think I could have had a better experience anywhere else. Not to mention, I actually feel that he cares for my well being and my health and isn't just treating me as a bill to cash out on at the end of the day. They have great prices, and understand the importance of dental care. if you can't pay something, they work with you, they figure out solutions with you. I found this place on ZocDoc which is always hit or miss but I could not be happier with this find! Every single staff member was pleasant from the minute I stepped in. My hygienist was the best I have ever had. She was so nice and gave me by far the most painless teeth cleaning I have had in my life. Dr. Culpepper was also very friendly and knowledgeable.
