    Next gas going that way
    Bruce K.

Nothing but love for this gas station that is literally in the middle of nowhere. It's an absolutely beautiful part of Oregon, through low hills and mountains on curvy roads. Not much population out here and as a "typical Easterner" I think that there's always a gas station on the next corner. Here's a clue: THERE ISN'T. The next fuel station in one way is 70 miles and 34 miles in the other. Yeah, that's a long way to go. Rome Station saved me an embarrassing situation and the fuel pump area is apparently open 24 hours. Hooray because when I rolled in at 8:15 pm, there was no one around and the restaurant was closed. My credit card was accepted and I put $50 in there. It's not the cheapest gas but it's sure cheaper than California and not as cheap as Idaho. So yeah, make sure you have enough gas when you pass through here because you're going to find no cellular signal in some places and that's not good. Nice little place pretty much in the middle of nowhere. Good food, good atmosphere. Lots of parking.

From the "Breakfast" section of the menu, I ordered "Two eggs and... Everything but the meat."

Rome Station, Oregon,is a typical "Oregon roadhouse," offering gas, diesel, a restauant, RV park, a few cabins, and a small convienience store. The restaurant is located about 35 miles west of Jordan Valley, and is truly an oasis in Oregon's "outback" country. As you enter the restaurant, you'll notice the small counter with five stools. There are a few tables in the dining area, but the restaurant is compact, to say the least, but comfortable. The "store" is located to the right which offers basic supplies, along with ice, soft drinks, and most important in the high desert, a great selection of beer. If you plan to rent one their cabins or camp at the RV park, you make your arrangements at the restaurant. The small convenience store, in the works of one of the staff members, sells "a little bit of everything," and that includes snacks, basic camping supplies, some automotive items, a small selection of canned food, and much more. The cooler is stocked with soft drinks, milk, cheese, meat, and most importantly... beer. From the "Specials" listed on the whiteboard, as I entered the restaurant, I ordered the "Pepper Jack Cheese Burger with fries as my choice of side dish. At $8.00, this works really well, and in Oregon, you don't have sales tax, so you are actually charged a fair price for your meal. The cheeseburger comes with choice of sides as fries, macaroni salad or tots; I chose fries. The meat patty was good-sized, probably about a half pound or so. I didn't specify how my meat was to be cook, as most restaurants "default" to medium. I wasn't happy when my burger arrived with the meat cooked very well done, which is not the way I prefer my meat, as in my opinion, it removes much of the goodness from the taste. To each his/her own, and perhaps it was my fault for not requesting to the chef/order taker, as I placed my order, that I prefer my beef patty cooked to medium. If the meat was seasoned, I couldn't tell, as the too-much-time-cooking cancelled out any seasoning. But... I must say the pepper jack cheese was melted perfectly, and helped to make up for the dry beef patty. I wasn't really happy about the sesame seed bun either, as it seemed to be a day old, and was very much on the dry side. Rome Station is a long way from anywhere, so I assume they have "transport issues" and I suppose those sort of issue happen when it comes to hamburger buns and other perishable goods. The lettuce, tomato slices, onion slices and pickle were amazingly fresh, juicy, and added ZEST to an otherwise dry cheeseburger. A shot or two of mustard helped this burger "climb up the ladder" a notch or two. As the side of my choice I ordered fries, and my burger included a mountain of fries, deep fried to a golden brown on the outside, tender and chewy inside. However, the chef seemed to like salt, as these fries were SALTY... way to salty for my taste! Please! ... leave out the salt and let me "pour it on" as I please! The cheeseburger was "average" at best, the fries were way on the salty side, and the service was impersonal and not particularilly friendly. Since I was staying the night at the RV park, earlier in the day, I enjoyed breakfast. Here goes... From the "Breakfast" section of the menu, I ordered "Two eggs and... Everything but the meat." That made for two eggs, hash brown potatoes, along with an order of sourdough toast. Two slices of orange were used as garnish. I ordered my eggs fried over easy, and they arrived on my plate, pretty much as ordered, except one of them was a tad on the hard side. The hash brown potatoes were crispy golden on the outside, but a bit on the "soggy" side, but had a nice taste to them. Unlike the fries that came with my cheeseburger in my evening meal, the hash brown potatoes weren't excessively salty. The orange slices added a nice presentation, and a bit of "tang" to my breakfast. The sourdough toast was, well... toast, and it rounded out my breakfast. What has happened to Rome Station since my last visit, back in June, 2017? During my past visit, I enjoyed amazing food, along with friendly service, but I can't say the same about this visit. My breakfast was alright, the service was alright, especially considering the chef/server was running a "one woman" show. But the cheeseburger and salty fries I "enjoyed" tonight were "average," at best, and the service was slow and impersonal. "Hit or mess..." for certain, depending who's running the restaurant. I truly believe in my future travels to the "Oregon Outback," I'll simply drive past Rome Station and enjoy better food, and friendlier company... Three stars, for sure, but I have to give them credit, as they have a "monopoly" on dining, and they DO NOT overcharge, as their prices are fair and reasonable. But like I said, they're "hit or miss." I'll pass them by next time I'm in the area...

Happy we stopped here! A sweet little spot to grab a bite to eat while on the road. The food was comforting and hit the spot, and was also made quickly. Side note: They have HUGE chocolate chip cookies and pie by the slice! For those who have an insatiable sweet tooth like myself. Extra Bonus: there's a cute shaded patio with some outdoor seating, hosted by our kitty friend, Frederick

Rome Station is the little jewel in the middle of nowhere! We reserved an RV site for two nights so we could explore the Pillars and the Qwyhee canyon area. We had Site #1 right next to the café. It comes with water and power and good WiFi service for $15 per night. They do not have a sewer dump. Also, there is NO cell service at all. We pull a car trailer behind out cabover camper and there was plenty of room to back the entire rig into the site. We have two dogs and were happy to see the nice grassy doggy area but beware its right along the highway and not fenced. Gas & diesel are available 24 hours a day, you pump, with a credit card. We discovered that counties with less than 40,000 residents have no attendants to pump fuel, so it is self-serve. We had burgers the first night and they were amazing! Nicely cooked, very flavorful and big! Also came with a choice of sides and we chose tater tots. The following morning we had breakfast, French toast, chicken fried steak and gravy. Sooo good!!! Then we opted for the burgers again the second night (and I got out of cooking!). Also opted for the black cherry milkshake. Oh wow! It was delicious!! (Even got two to-go for the freezer before we left!) The caretaker, cooks and waitress were all so friendly and helpful, but not overbearing. We really enjoyed our stay!! If there is any downside of this place, I would say that Hwy 95 is very busy, and the traffic is around the clock. But it didn't bother our sleeping, as you get used to it. Don't miss this stop on your trip along Hwy 95!! Even if its to stop, sit on the beautiful deck and have a milkshake!

Stopped here for breakfast on our way to Reno. Was very satisfied with the food here, since there's literally nothing else remotely close, and eating gas stations snacks WAS NOT an option (I wanted REAL food). The dining area was small but cozy and nicely lit. There are a few tables as well as a couple bar type chairs up front (but are not high like regular bar chairs). I think this place would be very cozy and amazing in the winter time when there's snow on the ground and very cold out. Just has a very warm and cozy vibe to it. There are snacks inside (chips, cookies, beef jerky, etc) as well as some ice cream in a freezer all the way in the back. The bathrooms are not inside, but outside (on the side of the building, next to the outdoor eating area), and are very small and tight. They weren't too bad but could be a little cleaner. We ordered a traditional breakfast, which came with shredded hash browns, 2 eggs, toast, and chorizo sausage as meat. The other thing we ordered was the chorizo skillet, which was the same as traditional except with the addition of shredded cheddar cheese and the chorizo sausage was cut up. Both were very tasty, and we happily ate this food over some gas station snacks. The food did take a while to come out, but there was only 1 guy working there doing everything. This would be a bigger deal if this was in a populated area, but this is in the middle of nowhere (with no cell phone service), so I'm just happy there's something hot and fresh out here. There are other amenities here (YES THERE IS GAS HERE), as well as an RV park and what looked like a couple cabin rooms to stay at. The 2 negatives for me are there were a TON of flies inside the dining area as well as the bathrooms. Perhaps one of those sticky tape fly catchers in a couple of corners would fix that. And the second would be the longer than usual wait for the food. Overall, this place is a STRONG 4, and I do recommend this for anyone traveling on 95. Safe travels everyone! P.S. there wasn't any cell phone service in the dining area OR in the parking lot, but I heard someone mention they got 1-2 bars out back, behind the building. Give it a try.

Very inexpensive. I felt as though we were in the middle of a meth trailer park. Our view was a mobile home with ripped curtains.

Really good burgers and onion rings. Understand that their huckleberry shake is very good, though we had to pass on that

This business deserves NO stars. Driving down HWY 20,…read moretraveling back from Eugene, new route for us and not knowing there was not many places to stop for Gas. We were advised by a little cafe in Juntura that there was no gas around except Brian's Service Station which was 33 miles to get to. We had 36 miles to go in gas ... Perfect we thought. We rush to get there and arrived just barely after close. Completely out of gas we see a TV on and knowing the owner lives on site. The station has option for pay outside but no way to actually pay for gas. Out on a HWY where there are no gas stations why would you lock your gas and not allow people to stop for gas. This concept does not make any sense to me. We notice the TV on and can see that someone is there. In desperate mode we took the chance to knock knowing this is an inconvenience but no other option and hoping since it was barely after close, still awake and under the circumstance he would understand. Knock on convince store door a few times and nothing. His front door is around corner. Knock on his front door and all of a sudden you see the TV and lights go out. Why not answer the door. Obviously someone is in trouble, but no this guy cares so little about anyone but himself that he hides in his house and totally ignores someone that is broke down and only needs to get gas and be on there way. Someone willing to pay double or even triple to just get enough gas to get to next place that was open. He sees us with flashers on, flashlight in hand, waving down drivers driving by to try and help. 2 cars so nicely pulled over and 1 lived in Vale. Both cars were shocked that Brian's Service Station cared so little about people and don't provide gas out there after hours where he could make extra money. Thank you to the kind souls who care in Vale Oregon or Brian's Service Station would have seen us upon his weakening sleeping next to gas pumps. If he was so worried about someone knocking on his door then he should have called Sheriff then we would have had help because even Sheriff's care and help those in need. I recommend you boycott this place of business and not give your hard earned dollars to a business man that is not willing to help those in need. Also I feel Oregon really needs to look at their laws and have all gas stations provide after hour service for Gas. It's BS that Oregon requires to have your gas pumped for you or you don't get gas. Get real. We are not so lazy that we can't pump our own gas!!! Really Oregon put in after hour self service and don't leave people stranded!
