But on Trip Number Six, last week, I discovered an even EASIER mode of transit. You guessed it! Airport Shuttle Express was recommended to me -- er, rather forced upon me -- as I stood at the kiosk in the train station at the airport, trying to buy a train ticket into town. Although I hate being pressured into buying something by a fast-talking know-it-all, I bent to the will of the lady at the kiosk and agreed to buy a ticket for the shuttle instead of the train. And you know what? It worked fabulously. So much so that my hubby and I reserved seats for our return journey too. On the inbound ride we shared the van with two other couples, thus stopped at two hotels before ours, yet still made it there in the 40 min. estimated by hard-sell kiosk-lady. What's more, we passed some of the best scenery imaginable: we drove by the Pyramid, the Circus Maximus, the Colosseum, down the Corso, past Termini (waving to those poor folks taking the train), and near the Spanish Steps. The driver himself was extremely courteous and even pointed out some of the major monuments as we careened (safely of course) around -- but he didn't chat us up or try to engage us in conversation, which I appreciate after a long flight. When it came time to leave the Eternal City and we had scheduled our shuttle pick-up, the same gentleman was at our hotel waiting for us, calmly munching a saltine, fifteen minutes before our official pick-up time. Beyond punctual! Bottom line: At 40 min. door-to-door (!) and 15€ apiece (hardly more than the express train), not to mention the huge convenience of not having to lug baggage on/off trains and across the massive Termini station (you know how far the airport train parks from the station exit!), there's no question: Airport Shuttle Express is my new ride into Rome.

After. We paid online, they sent us an email with instructions. It said, our driver would meet us outside customs. He would be holding a sign with our name on it. If we had trouble finding him, we could go to their desk in Terminal B. We arrived in Leonardo Da Vinci airport at Terminal 3. There were plenty of people outside with signs. Just no one with our name. So we went looking for Terminal B. Slight problem. There is no Terminal B. Only terminals 1,2 or 3. So we went to Terminal 2. No one there. So, we called them. They were back in Terminal 3. Their desk had another name on it ???? The lady crossed our name off the list and said take a seat over there. We will be leaving in a few minutes. Well a few minutes turned into an hour. Our driver was not even there. They only called him after enough people showed up to fill up the van. Then we had to walk a good ten minutes with our luggage to where the van was parked. So, we did not get into Rome until three hours after we cleared customs. We had already paid for the return trip. So, we called then the day before to make sure that they would be on time for our departure. The driver showed up ten minutes late. Then when we got in the van, the engine would not start. It took four tries to get the engine going. Talk about nerve racking. I recommend anyone take the train into town.

Our cruise stopped in Civitavecchia, and rather that make the 90 minute one-way trip to see Rome…read moreagain, we decided on finding a private tour around the port area. We found an appealing tour offered by DriverInRome, "Countryside, Castles, And Cute Villages," a 9-hour trip visiting 3 medieval towns and a castle around the nearby Lake Bracciano. I offered other cruise passengers the opportunity to join the tour, and ended up needing two 8-passenger vans. Let me start by saying our drivers, Riccardo and Costinel, were terrific---both very outgoing and spoke fluent English. I was in Riccardo's van, so I can speak very highly about him in particular. Riccardo grew up in the area and knew it like his backyard, enough to know to take some back roads when we hit construction traffic. The three towns, Bracciano, Anguillara and Trevignano, all had historic town centers but were still unique in their own ways. We loved having free time in each stop, like enjoying cappuccino and a pastry in a sidewalk cafe, strolling through a street market, strolling up to a hilltop church for some great photos, and watching a clutch of toddlers in a day care class all holding onto a rope while walking the cobblestone streets like ducklings. The scenery was fantastic, and the towns usually had high points to get some great photos. The castle was in remarkable condition, and gave you all the flavor of medieval aristocracy. During our walk through, we heard a bit of a scream and looked up along one of the castle walls, realizing that a young man had just proposed to his lady fair (she said yes). She was still trembling as we congratulated them as we passed them on their way down. The drivers also took us to a great little restaurant which they had to research for us, because on a Monday in this region many businesses are closed, including many restaurants. Know that drivers are not tour guides---in Italy, guides need to be educated and certified, so Riccardo could not guide us through the towns, but we knoew that in advance. But what he can do is give us his knowledge of the areas while we're driving, such as sites to see in the towns and history of the area, and it was thoroughly enjoyable. Later in the cruise, we were on tours that had groups of 35 people, and having a private driver and exploring on our own is our much preferred way to explore. Riccardo and Costinel were terrific hosts, and all 16 of us had a wonderful day seeing the authentic Italy and making new friends. I wholeheartedly recommend DriverInRome.

We were on a cruise ship and had to scramble to get to the shore excursions desk by 9:00 pm to figure out a new plan for the next morning. A couple of days before arrival, they sent a reminder email to make sure my phone and WhatsApp were on so the driver could reach us easily. Just a few minutes after our plane landed, our driver, Valerio, contacted me via WhatsApp. He told me exactly where to meet him and was waiting with a sign with my name on it. Valerio was very nice and helpful, and the driving was great. We are very satisfied with the service and the entire experience was excellent!

The online booking process was simple, and I received my confirmation email almost instantly. I later needed to adjust the pickup time and was able to reply directly to the same email -- the customer service team responded promptly and was incredibly helpful in answering all my questions. Once we landed at FCO, communication switched over to WhatsApp, which made everything so convenient. As soon as I connected to the airport Wi-Fi, I received a friendly message from our driver, Valerio. Since it was our first time arriving in a Schengen country, I told him we might take a little longer at immigration. Valerio was patient, professional, and kept in touch the entire time, making it so easy to find him in the busy arrivals area. The vehicle was spacious and comfortable, easily fitting all 7 of us and our 6 pieces of luggage. The ride to Civitavecchia was smooth, quick, and stress-free. It's also worth noting that paying in Euro cash made the process much easier, so I'd recommend having some ready upon arrival. Thank you, Shared Shuttle and Valerio, for making our first trip to Europe start off on such a great note! Highly recommended for anyone traveling to or from FCO or the cruise port.
