She runs the ice cream shop a few doors down, and her complaint concerned parking: her lot was full, she insisted, because pizzeria customers were taking her spaces. Shared lots are a legitimate source of friction for small businesses, and had the exchange stayed confined to that grievance, it would have been an unpleasant but unremarkable moment. It did not stay confined. The customers she confronted argued back, understandably unwilling to be berated over something outside their control. Voices rose, profanity flew from both sides, and I assumed, as most bystanders probably did, that the argument would burn itself out. Instead, her attention shifted. She turned from the customers toward the young cashier working the register, a man who had not parked anywhere, had said nothing, and had no part in the dispute at all. What followed changed in character immediately. She was no longer discussing parking. She began questioning his faith and his origin, asking with open contempt whether he did not have somewhere else to be, a mosque, a prayer, phrasing the words less as questions than as insults meant to demean him for who he was. She kept going, treating his identity itself as though it were an offense, as though his presence behind the counter were a provocation. I felt a distinct secondhand humiliation watching him absorb it. He had invited none of this. He was simply finishing a shift, and he found himself carrying the full weight of a stranger's anger that had started over parking and curdled into something far more personal. To his credit, he stayed composed, explaining calmly that he had no control over where anyone parked and that her complaint was misdirected. His restraint did not calm her. It seemed to provoke her further, as though his refusal to match her hostility offended her in its own right. She kept berating him, her language growing coarser, until she threatened to call the health inspectors and get the place shut down entirely, a threat with no apparent connection to food safety and every appearance of being the last weapon in an argument she had already lost. By then several of us had stopped pretending not to watch. Phones came out. A quiet murmur of disapproval moved through the small crowd. Someone near me said, under their breath, that this had gone well past anything a parking dispute could justify. Eventually, whether from exhaustion or some flicker of self-awareness, she stormed back toward her own shop, still muttering, leaving the cashier shaken but composed and the rest of us standing there processing what we had just seen. Conversations with the employees were superb. You can truly tell they enjoy what they do. Additionally, they were so accommodating towards our group, asked us a bit about ourselves, and let us try so many yummy flavors to finally decide on a treat (or two)! I got a small cup of two of their signature boozy sorbets, and it was SO YUMMY. The right amount of tanginess, light bitterness from the alcohol, and just an amazing bite in each scoop. I absolutely loved the space outside; I definitely see opportunity for it to become such a heavily occupied area later on!
