5 star rating for a Dentist office? Who even likes going to the dentist enough to give 5 stars?!…read moreBut seriously, this place deserves it! This office was recommended to me by a co-worker and I couldn't be happier that I chose this place as my dental office. Each and every appointment I have ever had here I have been treated with nothing but the utmost courtesy and respect by the receptionists, hygienist, and dentists. They also have always been on-time for my appointments. I've been to other dentist offices in the area where they like to try and push unnecessary cosmetic treatments on you -- this office does not do that. They will make suggestions based upon what your goals are with your teeth and that is it, but I have never felt uncomfortable here trying to be "sold" on a service or product like I have at other offices. The office itself is very nice and ample parking is available out front and they accept Penn State insurance!

My third appointment they called to reschedule. This was January. I told them that I needed an afternoon appointment. BUT scenery park is the besssst dentist I have ever been to (and I've been to more than a dozen). I have had the pleasure of seeing Dr. Basco, Dr Christian, a really cool dental assistant, and their really fastidious dental hygienist (shoot I forgot her name sorry). Dr. Basco is my favorite - she is freaking hilarious. They did some cleanings, a crown for me after I had the pleasure of having a root canal downstairs haha. I even took a selfie with Dr. Basco when they were doing a mold of my mouth....maybe I can find it and upload it later haha. I brought my husband for a cleaning as well. When I left State College they actually sent me a gift card and a kind note which was super sweet - THANKS! If only I could like bring this dental office with me so I don't have to test the waters with some rando...I highly recommend them! I'm not really sure what Nicholas B is talking about because they were ALWAYS upfront about how much my procedures would cost. I actually got a great deal on my crown because of a program they have that gives you 20% off of all services beyond the routine stuff which is covered by the program. It probably would've cost an extra $1000 if I had it done in VA where I am originally from. I really do not think they are truly only in it for the money...they seem to really like their job and talking with their patients. They remembered stuff I told them from months ago and would ask me about how my job is going etc. They also never told me I had extra cavities just to squeeze money out of me which is a common practice for sketchy dentists...

Painless dentistry…read more I have very sensitive teeth, have since I was a child, and thought there really was nothing for it. It turns out, a highly skilled dentist with a priority on patient comfort makes all the difference. Dr. Schimmel gave me a real true painless filling. Then another on the other side the next week. I wasn't dreaming - it's reproducible! I was blown away that I could get a weekday appointment in less than a week if my schedule was flexible, and two if it wasn't so much. The staff is friendly and courteous. I usually see the same hygienist each time, who is gentle with the cleaning, and I rarely need to tell her if something hurts. Lisa in the front office is personable and straightforward. Dr. Schimmel himself is gentle and thorough in his exams. Everyone remembers me, even though it's been six months. The feeling is a little like family, and it reminds me of the family dentist I went to growing up (don't tell him Dr. Schimmel gives better filings). They don't participate in any insurance plans, but they accept insurance payments and the copays for the Penn State plans are affordable. I haven't had to have a more complex procedure than a filling done since I've been coming here, but the people who referred me to the office insisted the fee scale is reasonable. This practice also means that there isn't a no-insurance penalty. I wish I had started going to this office sooner, and the only reason I am considering leaving it is because I'm moving away. With some friends still in town, I wonder if it's not worthwhile to schedule visits while I'm back visiting.

During appointments, I had to ask two different dentists and a dental assistant to stop touching and patting me throughout treatment. It was not a single incidental touch, but continuous unnecessary physical contact on my arm or shoulder, which was highly unusual and felt invasive. A hygienist also used my chest as a resting surface for her instruments, dropping tools onto it repeatedly during cleaning. I found the experience physically uncomfortable and jarring. I continued going there for several years because, to their credit, they eventually noted my discomfort in my chart and the unwanted touching stopped. However, at my last appointment I was 7 minutes late because of an unexpected domestic issue that arose as I was leaving the house. I called ahead to let them know. When I arrived, I was told they could no longer see me as a patient because I was "always" late, which was simply untrue. I had often arrived on time and had also waited 20 to 30 minutes for the office when it was running behind, including one occasion when the wait was closer to 40 minutes. What felt especially unfair was that I was never given any warning about lateness policies before being abruptly dismissed from the practice after arriving for my appointment. There were no prior conversations, notices, or written warnings in their appointment communications. Being refused treatment and permanently dropped as a patient on the spot over being 7 minutes late was disproportionately harsh and humiliating. A basic courtesy conversation or warning beforehand would have made the situation feel far less unnecessarily severe. Overall, I found the practice disrespectful of personal boundaries and needlessly punishing toward me as a longtime patient.

I didn't have insurance info on hand, but the receptionist was able to pull up my information right away and give me price quotes over the phone. Due to a cancellation, within the hour I was in the dentists' chair having a great conversation about local fishing spots while we waited for the local anesthetic to kick in. He reminded me multiple times to "not be shy" and tell them when it hurts. When they started, I wimped out and asked for more anesthetic...so more fishing chat ensued. After what seemed like 15-20 minutes of pain-free work...they finished up and sent me on my way! I'm scheduled to go back after vacation. I can honestly say that they've cured me of my irrational fear of getting my teeth fixed up and plan to go back for regular cleanings like when I was a young tyke and my parents made me go!

As a prerequisite, it needs to be stated that I take absolutely no pleasure in giving such a…read moredreadfully low rating to a doctor, -any- doctor, that appeared to have had my best interests in mind at the time. For a couple years now I debated with myself if I should even post this.. but unfortunately, as I've suffered throughout the years due to what I'd like to believe was a "mistake," this review needs to be written. In the spring of 2008, my back, right molar woke me up in the middle of the night with terrible, excruciating pain. I'm talking, baseball bat over the head agony. After calling (literally) five practices in town and coming up empty handed for any type of assistance at all, I gave Dr. Curtis a buzz. Their extremely comforting and very understanding receptionist made an appointment for me the very next morning, which I was SO grateful for. Their facilities were clean, well-lit and the staff were all incredibly welcoming and pleasant. After being taken into the examining room, I was greeting by Dr. Curtis who was also amazingly kind and accommodating. I was told I needed the standard drill & filling done. He applied a temporary filing after the cleaning and the next week, I was back for the permanent filling. At the time, I hadn't had many fillings done in the past (I'm a little obsessive with m teeth!) and was still new to the process. So unfortunately when I noticed my jaw was still inflamed and painful the week after the final filling, I fully believed them when I was told this wasn't a problem and to continue taking antibiotics for another 10 days. Time passed. I moved to Rhode Island and never had any cause to think about the filling. ....Until last year. Toward the end of 2012 I began to find myself in unbearable pain. The gums around my back, right molar were totally inflamed, my neck and glands grossly swollen and a terrible, foul liquid was draining out. Additionally, I had flu-like symptoms and severe nausea. Before I was able to get to a dentist (I had lost my job), the filling, along with half my tooth, completely fell apart. I was horrified. After financial help from my family, I finally saw a primary dentist who confirmed my worst nightmare: not only was I in need of a root canal back in 2008, but the drilling and filling were applied -on top of the exposed nerve.- This lead to a severe dental infection that slowly spread throughout my jaw bone and the rest of my body, leading to several serious health issues I'm still dealing with today. It was surprising and an absolutely terrible situation I found myself in. At the time I really felt like Dr. Curtis had done a great deal to help me but ultimately, the sloppy work I was given have caused unhealthy, dangerous repercussions I may have to deal with for the rest of my life. The moral of the story? Always question you dentist/doctor if something doesn't feel right.
