I became a patient of Dr Roan's office about 12 years ago and I will never go to another dentist until he retires. During appointments, I had to ask two different dentists and a dental assistant to stop touching and patting me throughout treatment. It was not a single incidental touch, but continuous unnecessary physical contact on my arm or shoulder, which was highly unusual and felt invasive. A hygienist also used my chest as a resting surface for her instruments, dropping tools onto it repeatedly during cleaning. I found the experience physically uncomfortable and jarring. I continued going there for several years because, to their credit, they eventually noted my discomfort in my chart and the unwanted touching stopped. However, at my last appointment I was 7 minutes late because of an unexpected domestic issue that arose as I was leaving the house. I called ahead to let them know. When I arrived, I was told they could no longer see me as a patient because I was "always" late, which was simply untrue. I had often arrived on time and had also waited 20 to 30 minutes for the office when it was running behind, including one occasion when the wait was closer to 40 minutes. What felt especially unfair was that I was never given any warning about lateness policies before being abruptly dismissed from the practice after arriving for my appointment. There were no prior conversations, notices, or written warnings in their appointment communications. Being refused treatment and permanently dropped as a patient on the spot over being 7 minutes late was disproportionately harsh and humiliating. A basic courtesy conversation or warning beforehand would have made the situation feel far less unnecessarily severe. Overall, I found the practice disrespectful of personal boundaries and needlessly punishing toward me as a longtime patient.

The women in the office made me feel comfortable and ensured me everything would be okay. Everyone made it super easy to understand what was being done to my teeth and how I could go about caring for them in the future. I can't emphasize enough how wonderful my experience was with this office- especially because of how awful my circumstances were going in there. I have had the pleasure of seeing Dr. Basco, Dr Christian, a really cool dental assistant, and their really fastidious dental hygienist (shoot I forgot her name sorry). Dr. Basco is my favorite - she is freaking hilarious. They did some cleanings, a crown for me after I had the pleasure of having a root canal downstairs haha. I even took a selfie with Dr. Basco when they were doing a mold of my mouth....maybe I can find it and upload it later haha. I brought my husband for a cleaning as well. When I left State College they actually sent me a gift card and a kind note which was super sweet - THANKS! If only I could like bring this dental office with me so I don't have to test the waters with some rando...I highly recommend them! I'm not really sure what Nicholas B is talking about because they were ALWAYS upfront about how much my procedures would cost. I actually got a great deal on my crown because of a program they have that gives you 20% off of all services beyond the routine stuff which is covered by the program. It probably would've cost an extra $1000 if I had it done in VA where I am originally from. I really do not think they are truly only in it for the money...they seem to really like their job and talking with their patients. They remembered stuff I told them from months ago and would ask me about how my job is going etc. They also never told me I had extra cavities just to squeeze money out of me which is a common practice for sketchy dentists...

I didn't have insurance info on hand, but the receptionist was able to pull up my information right away and give me price quotes over the phone. Due to a cancellation, within the hour I was in the dentists' chair having a great conversation about local fishing spots while we waited for the local anesthetic to kick in. He reminded me multiple times to "not be shy" and tell them when it hurts. When they started, I wimped out and asked for more anesthetic...so more fishing chat ensued. After what seemed like 15-20 minutes of pain-free work...they finished up and sent me on my way! I'm scheduled to go back after vacation. I can honestly say that they've cured me of my irrational fear of getting my teeth fixed up and plan to go back for regular cleanings like when I was a young tyke and my parents made me go!
