Otoro form my omakase before my phone dies! #priorities
Sebastian H.

My first dinner in Mexico City was right here at Rokai. Who would've thunk it! Not the most traditional of choices. However, it was one of the gastronomic highlights of my trip. It was my first Omakase and also the best sushi experience I have ever had. The attention to detail, freshness, and the ability to highlight the star ingredient is perfection. The Otoro, the wagyu, the foie gras topped eel, the cocktails, the friendly and attentive staff, etc. All executed impeccably. This set the bar high for the Mexican eats I would find on my travels. I want to thank the entire staff at Rokai for an amazing meal. One I will not soon forget. I highly recommend getting the $1,800MX Omakase. It is well worth the price tag and probably half of what it would cost stateside. ENJOY!!!

I Wish I had written this review in the prime of this restaurant, I mean, It's still a great place when you're looking for something of a higher tier in sushi matters; but maybe at this point in time, the prices are currently quiet expensive. Still and besides some of their very small and minor flaws, it's a great place, just make sure to book a reservation in the chef's counter so you can enjoy the whole experience.

We made a reservation in advance for a Monday dinner for 7pm and didn't think it was necessary as there was enough seating. :) the restaurant is located in a very cute area around a lot of restaurants, bars, dessert places, etc., so it's a fun area to be around. (It's very close to the angel of independence) We got seated and our servers were incredibly attentive. We got the omakase set B for each of us, and it was a good amount of food to feel good but not popping. I can't recall how many pieces of sushi we actually ate, but we had oyster, a hot tempura veggie thing stuffed w crab, 3 different cuts of sashimi, various sushi (toro, squid, uni, etc.), a handroll, dessert etc. everything was really good and fresh, so we were pretty. The rice was a bit warmer than I'm used to for sushi, but I can't complain otherwise. :) This was one of the few places I've been to that served free water (not sparkling water). We shared a sake together and a beer. Overall, pretty happy we tried this Japanese place in Mexico. :)

Did Omakase B, the most expensive option on the menu for 1800 pesos / $95US. Sat at the sushi bar and enjoyed it paired with a nice cold sake. Oyster starter, Sashimi (3 kinds), Mackerel Tempura, Nigiri (8 kinds), Nigiri special (toro with truffles, Uni, Eel with bay scallop), Toro hand roll, miso soup, and dessert. Took just over an hour with good pacing. High quality fish, good chef. Menu in Spanish and I can't speak it, so a bit of a language barrier, but it didn't effect the evening. Look at the pics for reference.

Lies. We got confirmation on a day they were closed.

I reserved well in advance on open table and got confirmation a day before. My friends and I were all super excited to eat here. Just got an email stating my reservation was cancelled. Come to find on Yelp, they close on Sundays. Interesting that I was able to book for Sunday and was notified last minute it's cancelled. We fly out Monday morning and missed all chance of eating here. Should be a system in place where we don't make the mistake of booking on a day where we clearly didn't know. My husband bought new dress shoes just to eat at a nice place like Rokai and spent so much time researching. We are heart broken and so disappointed as we planned our whole Mexico City trip around this dinner. We wanted to end our trip with a bang but now can't even eat there.

Left store sell ramen
Right store sell sashimi and sushi

There are two separate ROKAI restaurants. One sell sashimi/sushi and the other sell ramen and hot meals. We had dinner at the sushi store. Pros: -Sashimi are very fresh! Cons: -Small store with few table. It may take some time to wait. -A little expensive

Favorite Japanese place ever. Wonderful and unique food! Very fresh, tasteful and beautiful. Must go whenever I am in Mexico City.

So I came here and turns out for this little place you need reservations. We got here like 7 minutes after they opened. But we still got seated. I love sushi and have gone to a lot of places to eat sushi some not so good and others really good. Therefore I know my sushi. By reading the reviews I was a little bit skeptical. But seeing that there was a lot of people around it was time to give it a try. What I ordered was about 5 orders of salmon nigiri ($75) and Tuna Maki ($150) we are talking pesos. Now for the food. The sushi was awesome. It was fresh and my mom and I were impressed. Especially her because she knows her sushi. One of the guys who makes sushi is from Osaka Japan (overheard him talking to another guy). My mom ordered a glass of wine ($180) and I ordered a cool Mexican beer from Colima a Lager nice and smooth. Other than that pretty pleased with the place. I recommend it to anyone who likes sushi here in Mexico City.

Spicy Ramen

Just came back from Japan and I must say I'm impressed! I ordered the Spicy Ramen, which was very good although I will definitely agree with some of the other reviewers that it was a bit overpriced. Me and my party also had duplicate items added to our bill. Not sure if this was a fluke, but make sure to double check yours just in case! Staff took care of it quickly however and other than that, service was great! Great ambience in the establishment but again, next time I'm in the city might venture out to some of the other ramen places and see how they stack up against this one.

JAPANESE COMFORT FOOD - This is not a place you take someone to impress them. The service is decent…read morebut it feels like a fast food place. And it is. But still, you call for assistance by pushing a button and someone comes out to assist you and in that sense the service is generally prompt. The gyudon is their star dish, basically the dish that made Yoshinoya famous rules the menu. It's not gourmet by a long shot, but for those who like the gyudon at Yoshinoya (like my wife) this place is incredible. I also had the tonkotsu ramen. The noodles were thin and very soft, the meat was decent, and the broth was thick and rich, almost like a gravy, but with a rich proper tonkotsu flavor that is surprisingly hard to find in CDMX. As you eat it it goes down almost like dry ramen with added sour cream, which is my favorite form, so so despite the fact culinary elites may scoff at this place, my wife and I will be coming back regularly. If you know my system, any place I would return to weekly is usually an automatic 5 stars, but the yakisoba and the yakituri are a bit too sweet. Still if you stick to tonkotsu or the gyudon and you like this kind of stuff it should land nicely. It may move you like it did us or you may think not much of it but for us it's a win. Give it a shot and let others know what you think. Happy eating from John Seeto!

The restaurant locate on popular street. Very affordable. However, the food is just measure up on…read moretaste or seasoning. They do have good combo. We have the irresistible combo. This includes ramen, Karaage, rice, and a drink. The ramen is plain. The charshu is bad, the Karaage coating not tasty. With that said, they are not even close imitate the Japanese cuisine. Need a lot of work. Service is not much. It is order at counter and delivered to you.
