Yakima Onigiri - Plan on 30 minutes before this treat is ready.
Elle M.

I guess im going to be the one to break the 5 star streak here. I was stoked to try this place in Little Tokyo and chose it because it is (seemingly) the only robatayaki bar in Mexico City, and yakatori/robatayaki is high on my list of favorites. In short, go for the food but not for the atmosphere. And take ear buds. While the aesthetics are a stunning minimalist dream, the atrocious 90's rap music at uncomfortable levels and the terrible service really detract from what could be a special and memorable experience. There are only 12 diners that can be accommodated at a time. There were at least 6 staff on site, but none came to check on our food or drink situation during the test of patience that is yakatori. The food was definitely worth the wait but did it need to be so miserable? If I never hear Tupac or JayZ again it will be too soon. And I was a fan. The folks behind the grill kept mixing up orders and places yakatori from the grill on our plates. When we explained we did not order that particular variety, they were taken off our plates and placed with the folks who ordered it. Kind of.... off-putting if not potentially unsanitary. We had the duck, wagyu, salmon, meatball, asparagus, pumpkin and fried rice ball (30 min wait for that last one). As good as the best yakatori in Kyoto, Japan, but just not the same experience.

Never would I imagine my first meal in Mexico City to be traditional Japanese yakitori. It was SO good, and the price was unbeatable. The rice balls do take a while, maybe like 30 minutes, but good things come to those who wait. The rice was perfectly crispy on the outside. Plus it didn't feel like that long since we were being served other yakitori items and ordering more along the way. The cartilage and karage was super fresh, the chicken thighs were very tender, and the chicken meatball was flavorful. The baby corn was good too. Pro tip for my fellow non fluent in Spanish travelers - the servers aren't fluent in English but they are super nice and have English menus available!

We ate here twice during our stay in Mexico City for Halloween/Dia de los Muertos/Day of the Dead. We visited one day for lunch and another day for dinner. They offer a lunch time only, teishoku (set meal). Most people only order the teishoku for lunch, since their yakitori is available for lunch and dinner. The set meal was a great deal and delicious. Very detailed and presentation was nice. They scoop the rice last so that it's fresh and hot when you receive your meal. A+++ For dinner we came here strictly for yakitori. Food and service was amazing. We didn't get the omakase but instead ordered a la carte. Most/All yakitori shops have a selection of "shime" which is a carb dish to fill you up so that you don't order the entire menu $$$. In this case, I ordered the yakitori don to finish my meal. I highly recommend to go this route. Their oyako don looked amazing as well. My only complaint would be when the chefs are fanning the charcoal, it should be done through the side vent and not the top. This causes the ashes to fly all over, which happened several times on both days we visited (different chefs running the grill). I didn't complain but I'm sure it would bother others. For the other yelpers who claimed its smokey inside: This restaurant has a state of the art ventilation system so we didn't experience any smoke. But regardless, it's yakitori, smoke should be expected. Side note: this restaurant doesn't ask if you would like your yakitori with Shio (salt) or Tare(yakitori bbq sauce). I don't mind and am fine with however the restaurant serves it. But if you have a certain preference for each skewer, the chefs will accommodate/customize your order.

Mexicans, or at least those in Mexico City, have an apparent obsession with Japanese food. I never expected to find so many sushi and Japanese restaurants in this city. This one is definitely a high end restaurant, located in a back street off the tourist trap that is Paseo de la Reforma. My co-worker and I stopped in here for lunch on a Friday afternoon and nearly passed the place after thinking it wasn't open. We only ended up here because we walked in to the business next door, which we thought was connected, but it turns out was not. The coffee shop we mistook as an annex for Hiyoko told us they might not be opened yet (1:30) and asked we if had a reservation. It turns out they were open, and we definitely did not need a reservation as we were the only ones in the joint. Supposedly, the place packs up quickly, but this was not the case by the time we left less than an hour later around 2:30. There was only one other party of 2 at that point. My co-worker and I each ordered the exact same thing. We started with the chicken thigh, moved onto the duck breast, followed by the lamb chop. All three were absolutely delicious, but finishing with the lamb was a great call. The menu is a little confusing at first because even though they have Spanish translations of the menu items in Japanese, it's not clear that everything is bite sized and served on a skewer. You'll have to order a lot here if you don't want to leave hungry and you'll also have to bring a stuffed wallet. This place ain't cheap, but it's worth it. We ended up spending around $400 MXN or $20 US each, but that included the standard generous 15% tip and the 16% IVA. I will be back to try more.

A mexico city gem. I really didn't expect this place to be as good as it is. The yakitori is better here than anywhere I've had in the US. I seriously make it a point to come here. Get the basics, and maybe skip the weird things like AVOCADO? The sake is pricey, I'd recommend sticking to beer or mineral water. Definitely get some rice, either steamed or fried to go with it. If they have it, order the damn cartilage cause cartilage is f*cking delicious. Post meal things: maybe walk upstairs to Tokyo Music Bar for some expensive cocktails, but more than anything just to use a Japanese toilet.

The best of the Best!!!! It's a very traditional Japanese restaurant, everything is cooked on the grill meats and poultry season very lightly with very good taste and excellent quality. Excellent service. It doesn't have the lay parking, although they are public parking close to it.

Baby corn yakitori

Another reviewer got this spot on. Best yakitori I've had outside of Japan is in... Mexico City. Everything was amazing. Was so good I forgot to snap pics of everything. Grilled baby corn, lamb with mole, steamed egg with black truffle, red miso sauce, gizzard, liver, meatballs, enoki mushrooms, grilled Avocado, garlic rice, and sake.

Amazing yakitori restaurant. Rivals this type of restaurant in Los Angeles! The omakase course menu is highly recommended!

Amazing place! The Japanese chef is a true master. Hiyoko is just as good, if not better them most all the high yakitori places in Japan.

I have…read morebeen to the Santa Fe location before but since this one is the OG one I wanted to try this one. From the outside it looks like a cute spot from Japan which makes you feel like you teleported and the decor on the inside was very cute. The service was so great, everyone was nice and answered all my questions. From the moment I step foot inside they welcomed me in Japanese and Spanish which really gave to the teleporting vibe. The chef who did my omakase was so nice I wish I remembered his name but you can see him in the picture. His style of omakase was amazing and as we got to the end it just kept getting better and better. He had my dad and I saying "wow" over and over again. One of the courses that blew my mind was the fatty salmon nigiri with shaved frozen foie gras which gave it the perfect buttery texture wow. To top it off he gave us a Wagyu nigiri with uni on top which is literally butter on butter and I was so amazed. The other chef said wait till you try the eel with the foie gras and WOW like it just kept getting better and better. I left sooo full I couldn't finish my dessert even though it was delicious and I felt like I was going to explode so we walked around reforma. Some people think omakase will not fill you up but it sure does! Thank you so much to the team of Rokai for making my birthday amazing !

This place was an absolute hit. Some of the best sushi I've had in months…read more They have plenty of outdoor dining, and friendly, prompt service. They have a pretty extensive menu ranging from cold dishes like sushi to hot dishes like Ramen and rice bowls from next door. We started with two appetizers, the Gyoza and the Shishito peppers. The shishito peppers were excellent, and had a flavor I had never quite experienced with them before from whatever sauce they were made in. They were very delicious. The Gyoza was also very tasty, and had a hint of ginger that was a nice addition. For my meal, I ordered a bunch of pieces of nigiri. Every piece came out perfectly fresh and incredibly made, for an absolutely delicious experience. We finished off with the Matcha tiramisu, a dish I wasn't even expecting to be so incredible. I would love to go back for it, although frankly I'd love to go back to this place for everything I ate tonight. We also shared the strawberry mochi, which was so good we ended up ordering a second one. I'm already looking forward to returning here. All of this that I mentioned, plus the rice bowl that my cousin ordered, was only $80. It is pricey, but less pricey than I was expecting.

JAPANESE COMFORT FOOD - This is not a place you take someone to impress them. The service is decent…read morebut it feels like a fast food place. And it is. But still, you call for assistance by pushing a button and someone comes out to assist you and in that sense the service is generally prompt. The gyudon is their star dish, basically the dish that made Yoshinoya famous rules the menu. It's not gourmet by a long shot, but for those who like the gyudon at Yoshinoya (like my wife) this place is incredible. I also had the tonkotsu ramen. The noodles were thin and very soft, the meat was decent, and the broth was thick and rich, almost like a gravy, but with a rich proper tonkotsu flavor that is surprisingly hard to find in CDMX. As you eat it it goes down almost like dry ramen with added sour cream, which is my favorite form, so so despite the fact culinary elites may scoff at this place, my wife and I will be coming back regularly. If you know my system, any place I would return to weekly is usually an automatic 5 stars, but the yakisoba and the yakituri are a bit too sweet. Still if you stick to tonkotsu or the gyudon and you like this kind of stuff it should land nicely. It may move you like it did us or you may think not much of it but for us it's a win. Give it a shot and let others know what you think. Happy eating from John Seeto!

Need a lot of work. Service is not much. It is order at counter and delivered to you.
