Prawn and crab cocktail
Briony C.

I've actually been to Rogano and Cafe Rogano a couple of times before, but my Cafe Rogano experience was tainted by horseradish (worst. food. ever) so I was keen to give it another shot. We'd received vouchers for Christmas for a main meal for two at Cafe Rogano (downstairs). We booked quite far in advance and had a nice corner table for two and were well looked after by the staff who are very professional. I had the prawn & crab cocktail for starter. This was presented in a crab shell and was delicious - a generous serving for starter and very tasty. For main I had the fish pie - the menu was pretty light on description, so I wasn't sure if it came with mash or a pastry top. I was impressed with it when it arrived as it was a pastry top in the shape of a fish was a little unusual! Overall I really liked the fish pie although it was searing hot at first. The veg (brocolli and potatoes) were really tasty as well. Overall, we had a lovely meal here and were well looked after. Cafe Rogano has an old-world glamour to it - it's old fashioned without being dowdy, and is such a classic restaurant. We've been saying for years that we need to have a proper meal upstairs at Rogano so that's next on our list. Some restaurants definitely treat you differently (read: worse) for being on a voucher but Cafe Rogano didn't at all - service was professional and friendly.

Pre-dinner cocktails

A special occasion calls for a 'special meal' and so it was that we found ourselves at Rogano ordering cocktails whilst we waited for our table. One super smooth gin martini for me, and a zingy, punchy margarita for the lady and we were whisked to our table. I've been in a couple of times for a cheeky champagne cocktail but never to the restaurant. It looks just as you imagined, like stepping back in time, which thankfully doesn't mean it looks tired and dated, but properly classy and old in a wonderfully retro way. I'll start with the service as, in this class of establishment I expect it to be top notch and we weren't let down. The waiters serving our area (two of them) were friendly, helpful, attentive to detail and had a sixth sense of when to wander by (to top up our wine glasses) and when to stay distant. What a difference it makes! Double points for pointing out a better wine to suit our meal than our choice which was also £7 cheaper! :) But what of the food! I hear you cry. Well, fear not, the food was sublime! As we sat we received a salmon pate sampler, which was very tasty but not as good as the amuse-bouche of crab bisque, rich, light and with a real double hit of flavours it certainly woke up my tastebuds! I started with scallops on black pudding, four large, plump sweet scallops on a sliver of black pudding which gave enough savoury bite to the dish without overpowering it. Clare had the dressed crab which was delicious. For mains I treated myself to the fillet of beef, medium rare, which ... well I'm not sure how else to describe it but fellow steak lovers will know what I mean when I say that each bite induced a small mouthgasm! Succulent, smooth, and perfectly cooked, I could quite happily have just eaten that, but the thick cut chips were great, crispy but floaty light inside, and the thick slabs of meaty mushroom brought the whole dish together while a drizzling of hollandaise added that perfect zing. Clare opted for the catch of the day, turbot, which was very tasty and quite a meaty fish. The sample I tried was a tiny bit boney but I'm very fussy (and it's why I rarely ordered fish, I have a bit of an 'ick' thing about bones!). The accompanying samphire and shrimp dressing certainly helped bring it back to the 'sea', the crispy skin an extra treat! We were both starting to feel full so, for once, sensibly decided not to opt for a dessert. Clare doesn't have much of a sweet tooth and I'm always a little wary of being let down, especially as the rest of the meal had been so utterly divine. What we hadn't accounted for was the waiting staff picking up on the fact it was our (first) anniversary and so when the petit four arrived, with Happy Anniversary written in chocolate on the plate, it topped off a wonderful wonderful meal. Great food made from high quality ingredients, a wonderful bottle of wine, and some very very well drilled waiters (did I mention the smooth coordination as we switched between courses, after a well timed wait, one would swoop our dirty dishes away and the other was slide our next courses into place, a beautiful gastronomic ballet!) I probably should fault it for price, it is expensive but it's an institution and it's not like they pretend to be anything other than a high end restaurant. And given that they pull that off with aplomb, I can only give this five stars. If not more!!

Where can you start with Rogano? Well despite its Italian name, Rogano is a Glaswegian icon. We're talking Billy Conolly-washing-down-a-roll-and-pie-with-a-glass-bottle-of-Irn-Bru Glaswegian here. That doesn't mean it's a hole in the wall proprietor of the deep fried mars bar, but rather a decadent art-deco 1930s restaurant which oozes timeless class. Situated just off Buchanan Street, Rogano has provided the bold and beautiful of Glasgow with stylishly luxurious surroundings to enjoy oyster and cocktails since 1935. With a design based on the elaborate Cunard 'Queen Mary' liner, Rogano also offers a slightly cheaper cafe and bar, but it's the restaurant which you really must visit once in your life. Cheap it is not, this is the sort of places students are taken when they graduate with overwhelmingly impressive marks as opposed to visit for lunch inbetween lectures, but you are paying for the quality. After all, this place is not the oldest surviving restaurant in the city for nothing and the fresh seafood could quite conceivably be the reason we were put on this earth. Indeeed, if Mad Men were set in Glasgow as opposed to New York, you can bet your bottom buck Don and co would be smoking (pre-smoking ban of course), drinking and eating in here more than anywhere else. Bellissim...I mean, pure brilliant!

The oldest surviving restaurant in Glasgow with a strong reputation, I came here for a catch-up lunch with my mum, aunt and uncle. We went downstairs to cosy Cafe Rogano where the walls are littered with pictures (Art Deco-style) amongst the matching traditonal decor. It was very quiet and so perfect for a long, leisurely lunch - there was no pressure to rush away. Infact the service was excellent - the staff were so vigilant and attentive. We had a chilled bottle of water in an ice bucket (nice touch) which staff kept coming to to top up our glasses when need be. Not a big fan of seafood, I chose risotto which was so very tasty. On arrival I thought the portions were small but the risotto was so rich and filling that I couldn't finish it! Certainly worth a visit especially if you like seafood (although their menu caters for all).

Steak Mmmm

A late Sunday Lunch with the wee cuz I had bought a voucher two mains for £19.00 from there Cafe Menu. It was not extensive but emough to choose from, I ordered a steak wich had a £5.00 supplement and the wee cuz had Ox cheek. We had some drinks beer for me and rose wine for the wee yin. My steak was well presented and was cooked to perfection, nice chunky chips and little vine of tomatoes, unfortunetly the wee cuz was a bit disappointed with the Ox Cheek it was fairly tough, but never having had it before she was not sure what to expect. When the server came to collect our plates she explaind that it should have been very tender and took it back to the Chef. As he was not happy with it either they offered us a complimentary dessert, wee cuz had a delicious sicky toffee pudding and I had a medley of sorbet. A wee Cocktail each and we were ready for hitting the town, this will not stop us going back to see if they can get their 5 stars back.

Lovely classy fish restaurant in city centre. Original 50s style Art Deco features makes it quite unique. Excellent service.

Oysters!

I have never tasted oysters this fresh. Honestly. They tasted as though someone had just plucked them from the ocean and shucked them moments before bringing them out. Amazing. Anthony Bourdain was here when he filmed so I knew I couldn't go wrong. I enjoyed soup, wine, and a lovely selection of cheeses. Be sure to put this on your list when you visit!

The garlic butter with it was not needed, but was also amazing, dipped my mashed potatoes in it. It isn't cheap nor overly priced, but for the classy place and the excellent meat and service it was worth it!!! I would rate this steak too 5 maybe top 3 all time!!! Waiter spent a great deal of time talking to us just as if we known him for a long time it was great. the level of friendliness and hospitality was very impressive. TRUFFLED BRIOCHE- The dish is amazing even though I did not taste any truffle but there was a entire truffle mushroom itself there, the plate they presented it in was annoying to rest the silverware, was a bowl type of plate and the fork kept falling in lol GOLDEN BREEZE- the drink was suggested by our waiter and it was amazing cudos to him! GNOCCHI- WHAT an unfortunate plate. This was to me not a gnocchi.i love the fact that our waited noticed and made sure to ask me if everything was ok with my choice, that shows that the staff cares about customer service. The gnocchi was blend and tasteless it to me was more of a polenta and not a gnocchi it was cooked pan fried and not like a past should so it was not a great plate definitely not a gnocchi. I would definitely recommend the place, not the gnocchi but the place was pretty nice. come and have a try!

As it was only lunch I restrained myself and opted for a starter of the fish cakes with a side order of chips, which was just as well as the fish cakes were a tad on the small side. This was mildly disappointing at the time, but actually they would have been fine as a starter if you were moving on to something more substantial. I was glad I'd ordered the chips as well though. Herself as usual went for the eponymous bivalve molluscs that are the house speciality. These were quite on the large side, and disappeared before I had a chance to get a picture of the bowl so must have been good! An Americano coffee to finish was of good strength and taste, even if it was only just over half a cup; presumably they were leaving a gap for the milk that I didn't ask for and don't want. Still, I guess if they'd topped it up with water it would be weaker and that would be almost as big a sin. The restaurant is quite large and was pretty empty on this particular lunchtime. They have a mezzanine area upstairs that you can rent for private groups, which would be great if you had enough folk who were seafood lovers.

The interior is classy and dark and has an "old money" feel in a good way. It's downstairs and you feel like you are entering somewhere secret and discrete. The only bad thing is they had the heat cranked UP when we went. It was so hot down there I didn't know how some of the staff were running around in long sleeves, I had to keep going outside to get some nice chilly air to take a break from all the heat. The food was 5 stars but the heat did make the experience not pleasant. Spring White Negroni: Gin, white vermouth, limoncello. Nice, cool, and refreshing in that hot, hot dining area, lol. New Style Sashimi: Salmon, bass, and scallops. Basically a crudo topped with furikake and slices of ginger. We thought this was overly sauced and a very unjapanese way to eat Sashimi so it was too far of a departure for us. Local Lindisframe Rock Oysters: Excellent, sweet and not too large, these you have to eat fast because of the heat. You can see the ice melting and fusing in the picture and I took that picture as soon as it was brought out! King Prawn Noodle Salad: This was SO good, our whole family loved it. If we come back we would definitely order this again. Wild Halibut with cabbage, peas, pancetta, and charred asparagus. Perfectly cooked but the sauce was too rich and creamy for us. Fish Soup: crabmeat, ginger, and prawn dumplings. Good bowl, would taste better on a cold day.

The standard of the food is outstanding, the service is impeccable, they have a small but select wine list and a good cocktail menu. All in a relaxed and not overcrowded atmosphere. It's been too long since we'd visited, but it was just as good as we remembered. I had the tuna sashimi to start - which unexpectedly came with chopsticks - while Herself went for the tuna tartare. Both absolutely delicious, melt-in-the-mouth good. For mains, it was the halibut and scallops for her; I tried the monkfish, although with some slight trepidation over the banana, green lentil and chickpea sauce. I needn't have worried though, it wasn't a very strong curry and actually worked really well with the monkfish and the haddock. Just enough room to squeeze in a dairy-free sorbet for me - they had a lovely cucumber sorbet that was served with the tuna tartare, so I tried that. Herself can never resist a good cheese board, and this one was good (so I'm told). All in all, a fantastic meal. So good that I completely forgot to take any pictures. The sad news is that Derek, the owner is apparently planning to retire and is looking for someone to take over the business, so my advice is to get in there quickly before he's gone. Oh - and they have Derek's Gamba cook books on sale, £20 each or two for £30. If you ask nicely, you may even get them autographed!

The dinner rush at that time was small, and I looked over the menu. I went with fried haddock, hand-cut baked/fried chips, small white orbs of pickled onions, and tartar sauce. For my beverage I went with water with lemon in it. Prices were excellent (for example the pickled onions were less than one pound) and the servings were very large, I was happy I was hungry. The fish was perfectly flaky and fried to a golden perfection. The tartar sauce was thick and flavorful and the fries not too crispy nor soggy. They were especially good dipped in the tartar sauce. The restrooms were marked by gender - male and female. I felt more at home with those terms than I did the terms man and woman used back in the United States of America. Since we were not hungry, we shared the £13 set which came with a starter and an entree. We love to try weird foods so we selected pigeon. It was fantastic. The pigeon reminded me of liver because it was was tender, chewy, and gamy. The only difference was the texture because liver is more grainy. I loved the combination of the slightly sweet cherry sauce and crunchy peanuts. As for the entree, we chose lamb stuffed with haggis. It was extremely succulent and out of this world. I appreciated that none of these dishes came with bread. Don't get me wrong, bread is amazing but I felt so bloated because sandwiches are everywhere. It was refreshing to have an Atkins diet sort of meal. Also the two generous glasses of wine definitely tied things together. Unfortunately, all good things come to an end because the dessert was anticlimactic. We ordered a cheese dish and vanilla ice cream. Also, since the ice cream was icy and not creamy, it reminded me of the $1 McDonald cones...which I love but was expecting more.
