    Chili Burger & Fries
    Steven H.

Decent road food. The pastrami is non-traditional on white toast. The bread started to fall apart as I ate it so it became an eating & juggling deal. My wife had the burger with green chili and she remarked it was quite spicy in a good way. The hand cut fries had the potential to be great. They were pulled from the fryer about 3 minutes too soon. The coleslaw was creamy and crisp. So pro tip if you're getting fries I suggest ask for "extra crispy". They have a dog-friendly patio. I recommend not bringing German Shepherds, the owner shared an incident where she was bitten by two earlier this year.

This restaurant was recommended by a local gal. It was excellent! I had the BLT and my husband had the California Cheeseburger. All burgers & sandwiches come with homemade fries. The bacon was piled on my sandwich. My husband's burger was huge and filled him up. Excellent service, fast and cooked to perfection. Thank you.

Restaurant pickings were slim in Fort Sumner, NM, and I wasn't too sure about Rodeo Grill based on the outside appearance. But since we were almost hangry we decided to take a chance. I'm glad we did. The menu was varied, the food was good and the atmosphere was fun. Give it a try if you're in the area.

This place was recommended on Waze when driving to Dallas and didn't want the typical fast food. Service was super friendly and our order came out quick. The place seemed like the owners/employees really cared to take care of it. Bathroom was clean and out door seating was nice! I liked that the locals all seemed to know each other but were very nice. Definitely would stop in when driving thru.

The burgers were delicious, California burger and the cheeseburger. Fresh cut fries and friendly service, clean bathrooms clean restaurant!

Very cute feel to the restaurant. I loved how much variety they had with the menu! The lady who helped us was so friendly and nice. Rodeo Grill has a real hometown feel. A big disappointment was that you cannot substitute French fries for onion rings without paying $6.75 more! I would be willing to pay $2-$3 more, but almost $7 for onion rings instead of fries?!? That being said, I went with the fries. We ordered chips and salsa, the steak finger combo, and the Billy the Kid Burger combo. Chips and Salsa: nice hot salsa and fresh chips. With fresh chips, you have the risk of undercooking them. I felt this was the case, but my husband absolutely loved them. I ate the crispy parts and he had the softer parts. Steak Finger Combo: The steak fingers were hot from the fryer, deliciously breaded, and TASTY. I was completely surprised by how much I liked them. The fries were hand cut, and fried well. They were crispy on the outside and mushy inside. The Billy the Kid Burger: We loved the square ciabatta bun! The whole presentation was neat. The burger was fresh and juicy. The green chili added that delicious spice that is vital to a New Mexican burger. Oh, and gotta love the crispy bacon! The last thing on my list is price. I already went over the onion rings, but the rest of the food was a little costly. Overall, I would pay it again because I really enjoyed the food. This might not be the type of burger joint to take your little ones to, but it is a nice place to sit and eat with friends and family.

The sprawling menu with unique and original items.

Quite possibly the best family-owned experience I've ever had! I had their cheeseburger and fries, my husband had their sausage breakfast burrito. Everything was so full of flavor! It was very clear everything was handcrafted, with well-seasoned ground beef for their patties, and an incredibly powerful salsa to compliment their burritos. Definitely make a point of stopping here to say hi to Jeff Cortese, and try his fresh cut fries!

Maybe there's another Rodeo Grill in Fort Sumner but I doubt it. As far as restaurants go there's pretty slim pickings which may explain why Rodeo Grill has such a high rating. When we visited there were some locals who loudly remained during our entire stay. The establishment seems to be run by some young women who were not particularly friendly. You go in to a counter, the menu is on the wall. You order, get your coffee and go to a table and they bring you your food. Seems a little pricey. Their specials were $9 and $11. I opted for the bacon and egg burrito, $4.50, kind of small. My wife got sausages, eggs, potatoes and toast, $7.95. The food tasted okay. The little hash browns were especially good. The coffee thermos ran out as I was pouring my second cup but she promptly took action to refill it. No decaf. Only pink sweeteners and powdered creamer at the table. Good coffee . No ceramic cups, just small styrofoam. It's an older building in disrepair. Many would say it has character. Character was further demonstrated by having all the condiments on each table within a stirrup. Kind of quirky. The bathroom was really nice and spacious. We didn't go to any of the other restaurants in Fort Sumner but next time I think we might just drive onto Santa Rosa.

Great food. Extremely friendly. Small location but all homemade fresh food. Kind of pricey but worth it.

$30 for three $5 sandwiches... Only two were combos (fries and drink). Place is way too expensive. Also the tables are sticky.

I visited on a Monday evening, around 5pm. That's usually the time us old folks eat. I had no issue getting a table. Promptly seated, I ordered a beer and my dinner. The menu is a good mix, something for everyone. I ordered the Chili Rellenos. Of course I ordered that. Hey, when in Rome..... My meal was served quick and hot. Waiting a minute to cool was definitely in the cards. No problem, I had my beer, salsa and chips to occupy me while the steam settled. After a bit, I dug in. First fork was the rice. Oh, was that rice ever good! The only problem was that there wasn't enough. I suggest that you order a side of that glorious grain. Fantastic! The refried beans, well, were ok, but just ok. The Hatch greenies, as you'd expect, were outstanding and very flavorful. I ordered them Christmas style, with green and red sauce. Both of those condiments were tasty, but of the two, the green sauce stood out. Boy did it ever. I'll be dreaming of that sauce later tonight. Hopefully my girlfriend doesn't pop into the picture.....OR, maybe she should! LoL, now that would be a dream! Don't worry about parking, as there is more than ample. You can park in the front, the back, either side, and if you're driving a big rig, pulling a trailer, or driving a tank, they've got you covered. Across the street is special parking for those vehicles. More parking outside than tables inside. Pay La Cita a visit for a romantic dinner, or as I did, by yourself....my dream trend may have helped with that. Hey, I may be old, but certainly not dead! Quick Tip: I parked in the back, and when leaving, I took the dirt alley. It was a fun adventure. I'd suggest that you do it during daylight hours though. You never know who you'll run into, or for that matter, over! Let's hope it isn't Skinny Pete or Badger.

Based off of the other Yelp reviews, I had high hopes, but unfortunately, we were let down by this place. We ordered online and ordered multiple different dishes in order to try them out. Here are the dishes that I got: Brisket Burrito: The meat was dried out and tasted several days old and reheated. The burrito also didn't seem to have the pan fried potatoes that were supposed to be in it. Tacos al Carbon: From the first bite I knew I wasn't going to eat these; the steak tasted weird, with a weird texture, and seemed old. Enchilladas: I got them with beef & green sauce; the beef had a decent flavor and texture. Stuffed Sopapilla: The sopapilla itself had a good comfort food type of taste and texture. I got it with beef & green sauce. The beef had a decent flavor and texture. As for the sides--the Mexican rice just tasted like salt, and the beans were bland and flavorless. If you're looking for fresh, yummy Mexican food--don't waste your money on this place. I have no idea how it has so many good Yelp reviews.

Penny's has that classic roadside diner charm, complete with the shiny silver exterior and that satisfying old-school diner door. It leans into nostalgia in the best way, like you accidentally pulled into a time capsule somewhere along a desert highway. Inside was clean and well-kept, and the staff were attentive and friendly without being over the top--exactly what you want when you're road-weary and hungry. Food-wise, the burger hit the spot and the tots were crispy (always a win). Simple, classic diner food done right. A couple of knocks: the bathroom was just okay, nothing terrible but not great either. And the soda... not good. It had a strange flavor, almost like the lines hadn't been changed in a while--definitely stick with water or something bottled. Overall, it's not a destination restaurant, but for where it's at, it absolutely delivers. A reliable, nostalgic pit stop that does the job well. Worth the stop? Yes. Just skip the soda.

Finding Penny's is like striking gold (note: this review applies to their Yampa, Colorado, location…read moretoo). Either stretch of road is remote and food options are few and far between. When you see the lights are on, it's a relief. From what I understand, they're able to stay open 24 hours because of a contract with Big Rail, which keeps train crews fed and honestly, the rest of us travelers benefit too. I love that the choo-choos take care of their people while providing a service to anyone passing through. It's a cozy, welcoming stop when you need it most. The kind of place that makes a long drive feel less lonely. In the instance I'm in those parts of New Mexico or Colorado, Penny's is my go-to. Five stars!
