Firstly, I have had to create a new, anonymous account to write this review as the patrons and…read moremanager of this establishment threatened me. This is a homophobic pub with a some nasty regulars and a hostile manager (Darryl). Until tonight, I loved Molly Malones. It was my favourite pub in Hitchin. I attended a few times a month watch live sport. I met some lovely people, especially around the pool table. I went tonight to watch the PSG vs Chelsea game, and ended up playing poker with a couple of lovely guys, and the manager, Darryl, who turned out to be not so lovely. After the football, whislt I was at the bar, another patron shouted out 'Chelsea Nonce'. This is an offensive homophobic slur when connected to football, as evidenced by the conviction of Joey Barton who repeatedly used it on social media. I politely but firmly told the guy that was not okay. He got aggresive and told me to 'F' off. He then said it again. I reitereated that his language wasn't okay, and said I'd call the police if he said it again. He said it again. I dialled 999. At this point the manager (Darryl) asked me to leave the pub and took my drink away (I had just bought him a pint). He said he was removing me from the premises 'for my own safety'. The police attended. The said that 'nonce' was not a slur. I advised them to educate themselves, They were rude and dismissive. Darryl appeared at the door, grinning, and invited the officers into the pub. They left within 2 minutes, and reported on their radio that no offence had been comiited. I got their badge numbers and names and have made a complaint to Hertfordshire police. The police officers advised me that if I was now unwelcome in the pub, if I didn't move on and a complaint by the manager was made, I would be moved on by them forcefully. This is NOT an LGBTQ friendly pub. It's NOT a friendly pub at all under it's current management. Have a look at the other poor reviews for this pub and how the manager responds. J

Molly Malones is my local pub and I love it. It's a proper pub in my opinion and, as the name…read moresuggests, run on a bit of an Irish theme. It's situated on Nightingale road a little out of the centre of town but is well worth seeking out. The staff are very friendly, the beer is good and the whole atmosphere of the place is great. They show the footie when it's on and have live bands from time to time plus events such as party night on Halloween and New Year etc. It's not a particularly big place so it can get a little crowded at peak times. There's a little courtyard out the back for smokers but you couldn't really call it a beer garden. Parking can be problematic around here but there are soem free parking slots across the road next door to the petrol station. Go on - give Molly's a go - you'll come back again

This is a very Irish bar - so if that is your thing then it may be for you. To be fair the food is…read morenot worth mentioning apart from saying that it is typical pub grub and is cheap. Reasons to go here are basically as follows. You like a real local pub feel that has an Irish feel, you like watching horse racing, football, rugby or sports events but keep in mind a lot of these will be Irish based or you like live music. For me it was o.k. but the locals were a bit frosty. It has a smoking area front and back and a pool table if you fancy a game. They also have a Golf side, pool team and a fantasy football competition so if these appeal then it might be for you. Don't forget St Patrick's day once a year which I am sure would be a blast (as it is everywhere) - Typical Irish pub, worth a visit if you haven't been to one before or enjoy the craic. It has a very loyal local patronage, so somewhere you might find some new friends if they warm to you.

The food is not great, it very heap at £2 for a sandwich I can only imagine why it is so cheap. I suppose being Irish would help to make any of the above more appealing, but when my husband just had to go there to watch a game, me and my friends had a friendly pool game instead. Even so, I did not feel at ease, simply because of all the blokes, screaming and being very loud and obnoxious. Also some bartenders have a very harsh accent so you must pay close attention, which is hard with all the background noise. The outside area stinks too much of cigarettes as it a heated area and therefore attracts many smokers. Definitely not for me, or anyone who appreciates talking and listening.

This is what brought me to Ganleys Irish Bar in Morden. Ganleys do make full play of their Irishness from the bright green decor of the exterior through to theming indoors including various folk music instruments and sign posts to Irish destinations. As it turned out, they also have a strong rugby link with the whole back ceiling being adorned with an impressive array of rugby shirts. It also meant a surfeit of large screen TVs on which to view the match. I was actually a little worried as I couldn't find any pubs open in Morden when I first arrived but Ganleys opened just in time for the 9am kickoff. Breakfast was available about half an hour after they first opened. They were out of pineapple juice so my J2O set me back £2. The match turned out to be a terrific spectacle even if the Welsh heroic effort came up short. Alain Rolland's hugely controversial decision to send off the Welsh skipper after 17 minutes and the subsequent reaction in the pub suggests that he had better not set foot in Ganleys should any of us Welsh supporters be around when he does! A nice place for some partisan sports watching!
