Important Warning: Hidden Out-of-Network Costs at The Surgery Center at Cottonwood used by this office I want to share my experience to help others avoid a costly and frustrating situation. I chose Dr. Larsen for my surgery specifically because he is listed as In-Network with my insurance provider. I have absolutely no complaints about the care I received--Dr. Larsen and his staff were excellent in every clinical aspect. However, the way the surgery was handled from an insurance and billing standpoint was deeply problematic. After it was determined I needed surgery, I met with a staff member of Dr Larsen to schedule it. I was advised to book it 3-4 weeks out due to my insurance's slow approval process. I was told they would notify me if there were any issues. No one ever mentioned that the Surgery Center at Cottonwood--where the procedure would take place--was Out-of-Network. In fact, I wasn't even told where the surgery would be performed until one week before. A week prior, I received a call from the Surgery Center's Billing Department informing me I'd need to pay a specific amount on the day of surgery. When I asked why it was so high, I was told I hadn't met my deductible. That explanation seemed reasonable, so I didn't question it further. Crucially, I was never told this was my Out-of-Network deductible. On the day of surgery, I was handed multiple forms to sign. One disclosed that Dr. Larsen is part-owner of the Surgery Center--standard for conflict-of-interest transparency. But nowhere did I see a clear indication that the facility was Out-of-Network. Two months later, I discovered the claim had been processed as Out-of-Network. I was shocked. I contacted my insurance company, who confirmed that the Surgery Center at Cottonwood is not in-network. I then reached out to Dr. Larsen's office, thinking the claim had been submitted incorrectly. They informed me that Dr. Larsen performs most of his surgeries at that center and that I should have been told this beforehand by the Surgery Center so I should contact them. This was especially surprising because Dr. Larsen's office had assured me they would handle the pre-approval. Clearly, they did not. When I called the Surgery Center, they said most insurance companies consider them Out-of-Network and that I should have been informed during the billing call. They also claimed I signed a form acknowledging this. I asked to see the form. Apparently, one page listed my insurance info with the acronym "OON" next to it--meaning "Out-of-Network." I didn't notice it, nor would I have understood what it meant. I was told to contact the Billing Department to resolve the issue. When I did, I explained that I was never clearly informed. Their response? "It shouldn't matter if it's in or out of network--we adjust our billing to match In-Network rates." That may work for some, but not for me. Had this been billed In-Network, I would have met my Out-of-Pocket Maximum, and subsequent medical expenses for my family would have been fully covered. Instead, I'm now facing over $5,000 in costs that should have been avoided. I was never given a choice of where my surgery would be performed, nor was I informed that the facility was Out-of-Network--despite both the doctor's office and the Surgery Center knowing this. That's not just a miscommunication--it's unethical. I'm currently filing an appeal with my insurance company, though I expect it will be denied since they followed protocol. The fault lies squarely with the doctor's office and the Surgery Center. I'm sharing this so others don't fall into the same trap. My daughter was seen today for two in-grown toenails on her big toes. Dr. Hansen couldn't have been nicer or put her more at ease. His bedside manner and sense of humor were just what she needed to help her relax. The medical assistant was also a joy to work with and fun to talk to. The whole staff is excellent. The procedure was smooth and as pain-free as possible, given the circumstance. We were seen within minutes of arriving and left the office in less than an hour. Dr. Dickerson and Lindsey are wonderful! Dr. Dickerson is not only highly competent and knowledgeable but also compassionate and friendly. He has repaired toes on both of my feet over the past few years. I am finally able to work 8 hours a day walking on concrete floors and can also hike, bike, and cross-country ski pain free! It's always a pleasure to visit their office because I know I'll be well taken care of every time. One of my favorite things is to hear Lindsey's laugh which makes my day! Summary- Do NOT go to this place unless you have lots of extra time and money to waste. I wish I'd seen the 1 star reviews before making and appointment. Dr. Hansen friendly but not helpful at all! Having never been to a podiatrist I didn't know what to expect. After waiting 30+ mins I was taken into the exam room to wait again, the Dr. Hansen spent 5 maybe 7 mins with me, repeating back what I just told him about my foot that bought me in to see him. His solution? surgery (whoa buddy can we talk options?) Two different insoles were suggested, pricey and most expensive. It was so fast I didn't have time to think of any questions. If I wasn't choosing one of the choices, so I could think about my choice and he was gone. I decided my feet are important to me I'll buy the more expensive inserts. After having to sign a paper saying the Doc doesn't know if these will HELP or Fit or if they aren't made right its not his fault, and pay up front, etc. I paid and had to wait 5 weeks. They scheduled an appointment when they came in, telling me when to be there to pickup the inserts. THIS WAIT was ONE HOUR & Fifteen minutes in a very CROWDED waiting room. I was told they had taken on extra patients so they couldn't help it. (SO SCHEDULE ME WHEN YOU HAVE TIME... you scheduled me!!). AFTER THE LONG WAIT and another wait in the room THE ASSISTANT BRINGS IN THE INSOLES AND HANDS THEM TO ME IN THE PACKAGE and looks like he's going to leave. They looked like they were off the hook from the grocery store put in a ziploc bag. Nothing fitted or shaped to my foot only a padded square in the middle. Really OVER $240+ for these? AND They could have just handed them to me an hour & a half ago!!! Having never had insoles before, I stopped him from leaving wanting to try them on, know if they fit, and to know how to wear them and what I should be able to expect, etc... The shoes I had on the insoles did not come out. He told me I could tear them out. I was hesitant to do that so he told me to try them on with the current insole still in too. ???? My foot fit in but it felt really weird. Who knows if they were right or not. He told me to buy new shoes that had removeable insoles from any of the expensive shoe stores listed on their sheet. I asked several questions that he could not answer and seemed to think, "I don't know" or blankly staring at me was good enough. I was only having an issue with my left foot. They measured both feet but the insoles fit the length of my right foot (left feet tend to be a titch long). I feel scammed. Then I get the appointment bill!! Hadn't billed the insurance or me for a month so the bill is showing as late. I call. He billed me for a 35-45 min. appointment!!! Apparently they start billing while you wait 45 mins BEFORE getting back to the exam room. Don't worry the First 15 mins of YOU WAITING... they don't charge you for that! Dr Hansen was amazing! I had major issues that needed attention. He was accommodating and made sure to fit me in to his schedule. Awful, awful experience. Twice I was scheduled to come in for a treatment and both times came in to discover that the key device to be used is out of service. Each time I received a call to confirm the appointment just the day prior but no one seemed bothered enough to check what the appointment was actually for and tell me NOT to come in as the device is broken and they're not in the position to provide treatment. Twice I had to make personal / work arrangements to be there only to be turned away. If you have an alternative option for your treatment, highly recommend you pursue that option. read more

The only one in the office who was wearing a mask was the doctor. The medical assistant lifted hers up to cover her mouth when she came in to get my daughter for X-rays and it fell down by the time they got to the room. The entire time she was taking X-rays it was off. The girl at the front desk was not friendly. When the doctor left after showing us the X-ray he left patient information up on the screen and left the room. I was able to see 16 other patient first and last names which is a HIPAA violation. When I called to complain to the office manager the girl answering the phone was rude and refused to give me the office managers last name. read more

I visited this clinic on March 23, 2021. I was very impressed. The office is very immaculate, the front desk people are very warm and friendly. The doctor took time to listen to my questions, and reassure me that my problem was treatable. I will definitely go back! read more
