* Top u-pick! *…read more We've been on a U-pick kick this summer, trying to explore the various organic options available. This farm is now at the top of our list for U-pick! Here's why: - Really feels like a family farm. A couple and their little girls were all under a sun tent waiting for u-pickers to greet you. - Peaceful. We didn't see any other u-pickers at all. It was like being in a private blueberry field! - Very friendly. The man walked us into the field and showed us where the good blueberry bushes were that were perfectly ripe and ready to be picked. None of the sending you off to the fields to search randomly for the good stuff! - Quality. The bushes are older, and produce an amazingly sweet richly flavoured berry. We enjoyed them yesterday with some of our homemade vanilla ice cream. Today they are going into a blueberry crumble - which I can't wait to sample when it finishes baking! - Ease of picking. The bushes had huge numbers of berries clumped together. They almost looked like bunches of grapes! You literally could put two hands under a clump, give it a bit of a vibration and dozens of ripe berries fall into your hands. - Farming methods. This is a certified organic farm. Not just "following practices" as many claim. Fully certified. They also are certified biodynamic. So you know it is long term sustainable. Very nice. It feels good to eat things you know have not been contaminated with pesticides, and also that are fully sustainable so they will be there for years to come. - Setting. Located in the Chilliwack Valley, but fairly close to the mountains. So you have a beautiful view of the mountains while picking. Call me crazy but somehow it didn't feel as hot as when you are in an open field with no mountains in the distance. So even though it was 28 degrees it was quite comfortable. - Price. For organic they are very reasonably priced at $2.20/lb. They took a bit off for the weight of the bucket too (80 cents) - very fair pricing. - Setup. Even though you are in the middle of a field, they have a portable water cooler so that you can wash off your hands after picking. There is a porta-potty too. But we didn't venture in there. So no comment on that! The ripe berry bushes are also covered in a clear mesh tent so that the sun still gets in, but the birds do not pick away at the ripe berries. So you enter through an opening in the mesh and totally feel outdoors, but in reality it is a semi-protected environment. The farm grows all sorts of things (carrots, beets, squash, beans, cucumbers, arugula, kale, romaine, corn, and even beef and eggs), but focuses the u-pick on berries. The other products are available from them through their farmer's market visits apparently. Overall this is just a wonderful day trip getting a bit out of the city, seeing the scenery, picking some amazingly sweet berries, and enjoying playing with the farm dog (who is very friendly as well). We'll definitely be back!

The "Taste of the Market" event is always organized before the Christmas season each year. I always enjoy the vendors' products, such as cheese, cooked foods, chocolate, olive oil, cured meats, desserts, and more. This event is really fun! Each product is unique and delicious, and we get to try small bites from every vendor. This year, all the vendors' foods were excellent. I especially enjoyed Mt. Lehman Cheese's aged cheddar, Those Pretzels, Lepp Market's turkey cranberry sausage, Grass Roots' smoked cheese, Madame Loïk's whipped cheese, Callister Craft Soda, Centennial's cookie dough spread, Fraser Valley hazelnuts, Charlie Ivy's olive oil, and a cranberry spread served on top of nachos (unfortunately, I forgot the vendor's name). It was a fantastic event that I attend every year. If you missed it, I highly recommend checking it out next year!

There is some food, coffee, both freshly brewed & available to purchase, flowers, knitted goods and the market will have an estimated 60 vendors by mid-summer! Not as crowded yet as the Bellingham Farmers Market and parking is easier too. As Ferndale is an up & coming town it will only grow and become better! It's a fun, large market, with a lot to choose from in the heart of Bellingham. The Bellingham Farmers Market occurs on Saturdays, so when I visited, I made my way over there an hour after it opened, and it was already packed! People get here early for the market even in the rain! I was impressed to see the large crowds with the wet weather, but it didn't stop us, Washingtonians. It really reminded me of a community event that many of the locals spend time at on their Saturday mornings - love that. The market takes place in downtown Bellingham, and has an outdoor area, along with a large indoor space where the market staff have a booth, selling their merchandise. It's also a dog-friendly market, so expect to see a lot of furry friends. There was live music, plenty of vendors of all specialties, and was next to a seating area where people could enjoy their market eats. I had a fun time, checking out all the vendors and supporting the local economy. I would happily be back to the Bellingham Farmers Market when in the area.

I spent a weekend at the Doe Bay Resort, on another part of the island, but visited the downtown area for an afternoon with my husband and some of our friends. We ended up spending most of our time at the Orcas Island Farmers' Market, which seemed like the place to be on a Saturday afternoon. It was super fun and festive, a bunch of vendors set up on a wide green lawn, with tons of people out enjoying the various offerings and the lively atmosphere. We wandered around, browsing the crafts and food stalls. I ended up getting oysters--raw, grilled, and fried--from Local Goods and a Polynesian plate from Moa Grill. Some tasty, substantial gratuitous snacking. If you're on Orcas Island during a farmers' market Saturday, I'd definitely recommend stopping by for some food and people watching. It's a great way to experience the vibrant villagey feel of this lovely island.

Orcas has a long and rich agricultural history and I've seen plenty of farms and roadside farm stands that stood vacant in Decemeber. I was stoked for summer. Cue COVID.... Well, I'm happy to report that the market was still happening. I'm glad they didn't throw in the towel on it, though from what I'm told it was vastly different this year. Oh, you can imagine that in previous years there wasn't a mandatory handwashing station at the entrance. And I imagine there weren't dots on the ground to indicate where you should wait in order to approach each booth one party at a time. But more importantly, I'm told that the market, even though it's small and mighty in its biggest years, was only very teeny this year. There were probably 7-8 booths there, and that made for a quick visit. Still, we bought some flowers at one booth, and a bar of locally made soap at another, so we did our best to support the vendors who are making an effort despite the restrictions. I have nothing but love for a farmers market, and nothing but admiration for the participants. Though we were only here for a little bit, I'm glad we made it.

The vendors are unique and the products they carry even more unique. You would feel drawn to almost every single tent. The tenants are warm and welcoming. The market is held on a community school backyard with a playground at the back. So if you are visiting with kids, plenty of options to manage the little tyrants. I got my toddler a very nice wooden bow & arrow and he loves it! We got wine, cheese, chocolate and everything was so good. I cannot explain but this market had that warm, happy, community vibe to it and that feeling is amazing. This will be my stop on every single visit to Victoria.
