If you're looking for a stuffy and pretentious steakhouse, you may enjoy this place. The establishment is nice but the service is atrocious and the food doesn't live up to expectations. The beautiful decor is rather wasted on the atmosphere the staff and the lighting create here. There is a way to make old school feel cool but this wasn't it. Despite it not being busy (or maybe because of it?), service was absolutely atrocious. Beyond just being rude and stuck up for the most part, they actually just failed at basic services you expect at top end restaurants - they rarely came over, they never cleaned up the table, and the cutlery wasn't even set properly at times. Heck, they even seem to ignore or not understand dining etiquette placement of cutlery for when you pause, are ready for the next dish, are finished, etc. Maybe it would have been different if I were wearing a suit and tie like everyone else there... sigh. As far as the actual food, it was a bit disappointing. The quality of the steaks was high but the preparation was mediocre. Maybe they just didn't have their A team on a random weekday but I don't know how you manage to mess up a quality cut; part of it is obviously also how long it takes for the steak to make it from the kitchen to your table. The best parts of the meal were the side dishes and dessert. That should tell you everything you need to know. The prices were high but in line with expectations. Service and general execution were way below the line though making it not a great value. It's rare that I go to a steakhouse that uses high quality cuts and I don't end up recommending it as a must but this is one of those times. read more

Words can't even express how much i enjoyed dining at this restaurant. After 23 hours of travel from Seattle to Sydney we decided to have a nice dinner to celebrate. The food made us forget our jet lag. The staff were amazing and so helpful, they gave us so many wonderful recommendations for both food and drinks. The food was delicious, when we left we couldn't stop talking about, on our last day of our trip we decided to come back for one last taste. Beautiful restaurant with impeccable service. We could have eaten about 10 of the sea scallops in XO sauce. The cocktail staff were kind enough to make custom Black Manhattans which were perfect. We recently visited Sydney and our concierge recommended this steakhouse. To start with the service, we expected knowledgeable and attentive service at this price point which is no what we received. When we asked questions about the menu simple things like what kind of mushrooms are in the mushroom side our server had no idea and disappeared for 30 minutes before she came back with an answer. After that when we finally ordered the steak came out cold/under-seasoned and the sides were not good. We never had a server come back and ask us how things were to be able to address our concerns. When we finally tried to hunt someone down we found out that our server had finished her shift and left but she never bothered to tell us or hand us off to anyone else. When we asked for a manager she did come and speak to us and we told her about our experience and the poor service and food but her complete lack of empathy was beyond us. She basically said that she would address this with her staff but that was it. Afterwards our 7 year old daughter had to go to the restroom and when she went she came out and said they had no toilet paper. I told the manager and the her reaction was to answer sarcastically "what else could go wrong" like it bothered her that we complained about it. Eventually they brought us a cupcake with a candle for our anniversary along with a desert which at that point felt like adding insult to injury. At the end of the dinner they did comp us something small but they brought us a bunch of bottles of sparkling never asking if we wanted more and the last one we didn't even drink and we had like $70 of sparkling water on our bill. We later went to Roast Republic in Sydney which cost a lot less for a tray full of meat which was delicious the the service was outstanding. Goes to show that you don't always get what you pay for. The only thing this place has going for it is the ambiance. I would find another restaurant. read more

I came across this restaurant walking to breakfast one morning and noticed this beautiful Art Deco building. Only then did I notice Rockpool Bar & Grill. I had heard of it through my connections and I made a lunch booking for the next day. I was greeted by a very polite host and was promptly seated at a comfortable table. The interior of building is stunning: Large greens columns leading up to the tall ceiling, a large wine glass display, and a view of the kitchen where all the magic happens. There were too many items on this menu that seemed very appealing that it was hard to narrow it down. I settled with a steak with a side of Mac n Cheese and I wasn't disappointed. The wait staff was also very attentive and courteous. I highly recommend this restaurant and I look forward to coming back. read more

This restaurant was recommended by the concierge at the hotel we were staying at. We were told that it was one of the best restaurants in Sydney. Nothing could be further from the truth. It seemed that our waiter new very little about the wine or the dishes on the menu. After much consternation, we decided on a wine and four dishes. The salad came over dressed but was otherwise okay. We waited for the rest of the dinner we ordered. It took over forty minutes for us to get it. Wile we were waiting we tried to get our waiters attention. We could no get his attention nor any other of the wait staff. When we finally got our dinner all of the dishes were cold or room temperature. It was obvious that the meal was sitting around for some time before it was served to us. We asked to speak to the manager and after approximately ten minutes he came to our table. The manager apologized. He asked what we wanted him to do. He told him we wanted a properly prepared and served dinner. After 15 minutes our meal was served. During the rest of our time the wait staff was nasty. They acted like if was our fault the the dinner was not to our liking. Our entire evening was ruined. The only compensation for their egregious behavior was a small desert which I did not eat. My impression was that they (the people who ran the restaurant) were very mush full of themselves. My coworkers had the Wagyu strip steak, which was good but I preferred my ribeye. The sides we ordered were the Mac and cheese and the Brussel sprouts. Both side dishes were a success. Mac and cheese is really rich like it should be but if you aren't expecting that it could be off putting. Brussel sprouts had a nice char and no bitterness the two main things I look for in Brussel sprouts. Not a cheap meal but is high quality and worth the price. We've been here a few times, love the Gotham City vibe, it's a Big Night Out place which Sydney doesn't have much of and Rockpool Grill does so well. However, the service was good and 1 out of the 4 dishes was phenomenal -- highly recommend the pumpkin and sweet potatoes and highly recommend NOT getting the pavlova. To be fair, we didn't know what pavlova is but it was not delicious. We weren't interested in eating the passion fruit marshmallows that seemed to have been mentioned a lot but still wanted to try out something new cause it was my bday dinner but the passion fruit pavolva pretty much tasted like a giant, cake-slice sized marshmallow w a whipped topping. Needless to say, we were only able to take one bite and left the rest behind. Not delicious. Other items were ok, just not worth the price for what it is. If you're a vegetarian or vegan I would not come here..... only seems worthwhile if ya like meat. The setting was very cool and if felt like you were in a bank scene from gotham city. The attitude of my waitress was very unfriendly and cold. Everyone of the wait staff and hostess were very friendly and awesome. Its supposed to be a revered steak house so i'll start with the steak. I got an Australian wagyu, which was very mediocre in terms of quality. It was cooked medium rare, which i like, but didn't have the exception tastes and texture of well executed steaks from a top steak house. Came here on a Business dinner, and have to say was pretty impressed. The Ambiance is art deco 1940's, an old bank converted to a swanky Sydney bar and grill. We plowed through a vast selection of fresh oysters, which were fantastic, Steaks of various cuts, braised shortribs, all of which were quite expensive, but tasty. You can tell its all about the Live fire grilled Beef here, so don't miss that. Their bar is deep with talent, and pour a mean cocktail and look good in the process, in their vests and Jackets. I didn't have a reservation so chanced it that they would have a table for me at 5:30 and was happily given a seat in the mezzanine - (if you're a solo dinner I would probably listen to all the tips and sit at the bar as the mezzanine is a bit sterile). Anyway, the service by my waitress was lovely and she was really helpful. I ordered the 36 day aged rib eye and the puréed potatoes. Given the prices here compared to other places, I had high hopes for my meal but left disappointed. My steak tasted bland and looked a bit unappetizing! I was tempted to send it back but felt guilty for wasting food. My steak was under-seasoned and it looked like it was just cooked on a flat top. The truffle menu looks amazing...and that was only the beginning. As I walked into the building, I was transported to the 1930's or 40's - the high ceilings, large marble pillars and balcony. It appears to be an old bank building or something. I was greeted at the front of the restaurant and my bag and trench were taken from me. As I arrived a bit early, I proceeded to the bar for a scotch while I waited for my party. Once everyone arrived, we were taken to the balcony where we had the best view in the house. The wine list is a small novel with wines from all over the world and we lived it up...the appetizers and caviar were OMG. THE STEAKS WERE PERFECT! The sides were just dandy - my favorite was the Mac and cheese with speck (a little piggy makes everything taste better. As for the service, absolutely perfect! Came by the Rockpool Bar & Grill on a recommendation and noticed they recently made a Sydney list with a must try for their Wagyu burger. I love Wagyu and I love burgers so this seemed like a match made in heaven for my meal. I came into the place and it's really nice, it looks more upscale for some reason. I asked to sit at the bar and away I went. The bartenders were all really cool answering all my questions and telling me stories about their recent trip to NYC learning more things about being a bartender. I ordered up a burger and their thick cut fries. They asked if medium rare for the burger was OK? Obviously you get a burger medium rare and I went with that! The burger was glorious So fatty and filling, it became difficult to finish. The thick cut fries seemed like a bad idea but I had a handful of them and they were pretty good but the burger was definitely the star. If you get a chance I'd recommend trying out the burger! I love it here but actually have only ever sat in the "bar" bit (over about 4 occasions). You can order off the bar menu - I will say it's one of the best hamburgers in a Sydney because the meat is so juicy. The wine list is phenomenal and you flip through and are so overwhelmed, if you aren't an expert like me! You can also order from the full menu here. I've only had the rib eye aged 60 days 350g med rare with all the condiments. It was great but not the best steak I've ever had, but it was pretty good. I would definitely order the mushrooms on the side! They were the highlight of my night. When you walk into Rockpool you feel like Batman is hanging out upstairs somewhere, ready to swoop down....or Bruce Wayne is getting his playboy on and holding a fundraiser. It's gothic, somewhat haunting, and beautiful all rolled into one. The service here is impeccable, bar side and grill side. I've only been to the grill side twice, but each time has been wonderful. Skip the pasta (why come here?) and go for any of the fish dishes or grill dishes, in particular the Wagyu. Juicy and succulent, nothing gets cooked past medium rare. Sides worth trying are Mac and Cheese, Creamed Corn, Sautéed Mixed Peppers, and Onion Rings. In regards to the bar side you MUST get the Wagyu Burger....it's simply the BEST burger in Sydney. I can't count the number of times I've gotten this burger, it's well worth its price tag. Be forewarned, that this is a pretty big burger, so if you are ordering any sides you won't need more than 1 or 2 if you are sharing with another person. This is a 2 part review - the bar section (Rockpool-bar-and-grill-bar) and the actual restaurant (the grill?). Bar - the only place that you can have Neil Pez's legendary wagyu burger is an impressive piece of work itself. Have tried almost everything on the menu and they are all delicious, a decent selection of wine, well made cocktails and polite yet approachable waitstaff. The place is always packed so go in small groups. Perfect for a mid-week or impressive but casual date. 5 stars. Restaurant - much more formal and impressive but can be a little stuffy depending on the crowd (popular with suits and Louboutins during the week). A ginormous menu that is generally pricier than the bar (highly recommend the abalone pasta), the waitstaff knows what they're talking about so ask plenty of questions if you're overwhelmed. Had a meh experience last time due to a dismissive waitstaff, emailed them the next day and they responded within a day apologising and addressed the issue. Very professional. 4 stars. read more

Rockpool is a trendy restaurant located in the lobby of an old time office building. This setting caters itself to classy steaks, fine cocktails, and a romantic night on the town. The Rockpool burger aims to embody that flair. The burger features Full Blood Wagyu, bacon, Gruyere cheese and Zuni pickle, pickled onion, and caramelized onion. The burger has a very beefy flavor with a hint a hint of sweetness. Coupled with the toasted bun it's an enjoyable experience, but the cheese and sauce used on the burger are not in attendance with the rest of the ingredients. The beef and bun were also a bit dryer than I would expect. Last of all, a sharper cheese or a greater kick of vinegar from the pickled ingredients would really make this burger a mouthwatering treat. For having a high price-tag and expectation the Rockpool burger is only mediocre in execution. There are better burgers to be had in Sydney...but if you need to impress your date Rockpool is definitely the go to. read more

Dined here about a month ago on my trip to Australia and the Whitsundays! One of the best wagyu steaks I've had in Australia while I visited. I got the wagyu tenderloin, which was nothing short of astounding. The tender cut of the beef coupled with it being cooked to a juicy medium rare was astounding. We sat upstairs with a French waitress and she was great with timing and with her advice Starters The four Raws all were very tasty and the tuna was definitely the standout and was incredible Octopus with hummus was very good too. Honestly the octopus was my least favorite part of the dish although it was good, however the hummus and the remainder of this dish was a standout Mains Filet-perfectly cooked and delicious enough said Abalone pasta- perfect balance of acid and garlic. I would start by saying this is a 3.5 but since you only get whole number choices, I rounded up to a 4. I am going to start with my likes. The steak options are great and you really have great variety. That being said, pick wisely. This will give me a way a little if read soon. I had two steaks, both Wagyu, one more lean and one more fatty. I am glad for the experience but I know me and wagyu fat is what I like and enjoy. The second item I very much enjoyed is the service. I sat at the bar and was well taken care of. I would likely come back solely for this reason. The dislikes aren't long. The single glass wine options are very much lacking. I had an interesting multi vintage shiraz that I would have a again but coming from the US, I have very high expectations for top steakhouses and their wine selections. Granted, I tend to be with others and have lovely bottles but I also read reviews in advance and was amazed that none of their wine scored higher than slightly above average. I fly enough to know everyone wants to have a name for that eclectic "find" but in reality there are far too many excellent wines to not have any on the single serving menu. Two Hands and MollyDooker each have reasonably priced bottles that can be served buy the glass that year in and year out are excellent. My second dislike is I am now getting very used to steaks being presented raw. I believe on any given night, the cut of each steak varies and something representative would be nice to see. A premium service requires a premium presentation. Overall, I enjoyed the experience and the great service. The wine would actually make me think twice as I want a wonderful glass to match the steak and am happy to pay a little extra for a significantly better glass. There are lots of lovely South American Malbecs that also can be served as a premium product without breaking the bank. Enjoy Rockpool but just plan ahead a little to get that great experience versus a good one. read more

So I've been here twice since my last review so will do some catching up. On the visit in 2015, they made me an excellent blood and sand. Basically its equal parts brown spirit, oj, vermouth and cherry heering. If a bartender knows it, you know they are old school. to start I had the Crudo of Yellow Fin Tuna, Hiramasa Kingfish and Ocean Trout with Finger Limes, Fresh Horseradish and Olive Oil. It was fresh and tasty. I went grass fed fillet for my main with brussel sprouts, chips and roast pumpkin. It was excellent as usual. More recently, they brought back a variation on my wife's favorite starter ever, a black truffle omelette on toast. This time it was a small tart of runny scrambled eggs with a generous serving of black truffle on top. While it couldnt beat the original, it was fantastic. It was even better with their Smoked Cherry Manhattan cocktail. The fillet was great as always with some chips, brussel sprouts and the potato/cabbage gratin.
