My wife and I recently spent a weekend at the Rockmere Lodge in Ogunquit, Maine. Like time traveling, the Rockmere is beyond B&B, it is a museum alive with history. Every room holds its own theme, curated by the artistic and charming innkeeper, Andy, who doubles as docent and storyteller. Walls are filled with "real" artwork, antique hutches and tables filled with classic china, crystal and artifacts, call to you requesting your gaze and curiosity. Amidst this aesthetic encounter you quickly realize the warmth of the space and are drawn in by Andy's familial welcoming. Our ocean view second floor bedroom was comfortably appointed. A special treat was the cozy third floor reading nook, where glancing up from your book rewards you with over the treetop vistas of the sea. Breakfasts were delicious and served under the watchful eyes of a young, beautiful Queen Victoria, smiling down on your new day. Take your second cup of coffee out to the spacious front porch and soak in the sea air. Located a mere stone's throw from the famous "Marginal Way," we rarely used our car, preferring the ten to fifteen-minute walk to either Perkin's Cove or Ogunquit Village. If you are looking for the ultramodern lodging experience the Rockmere is not for you. The best Labor Day weekend stay, at one of the best locations in Ogunquit. The lodge has three rules: Check in time 2-5pm; Always close front door; Let owner know if you are having breakfast. That's it. If you don't want to follow the rules you can stay somewhere else. The rooms are just like the pictures you see online, yes - there is a lot of decor all over the lodge. If you don't like it, you don't have to stay Here. I found the place to be comfortable, welcoming, and very convenient. We had breakfast at the ledge the first day, and then let the owner know that we would eat elsewhere the next days. No issues. I don't think this place is suitable for kids or people who like blank spaces and no color. Yes, it's quirky and if you can appreciate that you'll love It. Pro tip: do not break the rules. Mayberry USA on the water. Quaint and quiet location in the middle of a popular summer destination. Andy is quite attentive to residents needs. He personally cooks a New England breakfast for each guest. The Veranda is ideal spot to read the morning paper while planning your day. Hoping to visit again this late Summer. This is without a doubt the worst place I had ever stayed. The Inn Keeper is a mean spirited old codger. The moment you arrive you are told what you can't do in this museum themed B&B. Never miss breakfast or you will be scolded. What a joke! We actually found it amusing how much of a busy body the inn keeper was. Think "Liberace". We stayed here years ago...apparently the inn keeper is older and meaner than before. Look elsewhere. Check out the negative reviews for this place. They are the honest reviews. I visited the Rockmere Lodge this past July and stayed at this incredible Victorian B&B. The trip to Ogunquit was a retreat for me to simply get away from it all. Upon arrival, Andy greeted me and went out to my car and brought in my suitcase. What a gentleman! His breakfast each morning was delicious. The other guests were pleasant and hospitable. We enjoyed Andy's stories. It's less than a 5 minute walk to the Marginal Way where a lighthouse remains with benches to sit and enjoy the ocean. You can walk anywhere from this location; Perkins Cove or to the beach. Restaurants and shopping and art galleries are everywhere. As an early riser, I enjoyed a cup or two of coffee each morning sitting in the beautiful living room. The inn is full of treasures and is beautifully decorated. Outside flowers were blooming everywhere. Being alone, I felt safe in the atmosphere which I found inviting and genuinely warm. I hope to return next year! read more

Loved my stay at the Rockmere, great location to the Marginal way.Andy the owner was super, very friendly and accommodating.I arrived around 10 a.m. and just wanted to park my car there until 2pm check in time.He not only let me park there, he had an early check-out and when I arrived he had cleaned my room and had it ready for me to check in. Breakfeast each morning was excellent and it was great talking to the other guests at breakfeast-I looked forwar each morning to speaking with the other guests and Andy would always offer friendly and entertaing stories.And each morning Andy would set the tables with different place settings, you see a beautiful and different setting eack morning. I had to cancel our reservation because of injury. I did not expect my intial deposit back because we were outside of the cancellation period for the deposit to be refunded. However, we were within the cancellation period for not being charged for the entire stay. We were charged for the entire stay. I called the Rockmere to discuss the matter. The person from the Rockmere would not discuss the matter. As a matter of fact, he hung up on me. He continued to hang up when I called back. This not a place to stay. I have never been treated so rudely by an Innkeeper. read more

This is a magnificent home literally steps from the Marginal Way with distinctively decorated rooms and fantastic ocean views. Andy, the owner, and Bob, the innkeeper have welcomed guests for 30 years and are the consummate hosts. We stayed on the 3rd floor and loved the room and view. The home is done in Victorian style so if you're not a fan, this isn't the place for you. And if you are going to complain when your every whim is not accommodated, go elsewhere! Some of the negative reviews here are unbelievable. You reap what you sow! Come with an entitled attitude and you quite possibly will be invited to leave. Come as a guest and be open to conversation and new things and you will have a marvelous time. Breakfast is prepared by Andy personally, so if you won't be there, let him know ahead of time. First let me say don't let the negative postings stop you from staying here. I've learned to call the innkeeper to get their side of the sorry. Usually with lodging negative postings are to get an upgrade or discount on their rooms. Now about our stay. I have been in the hotel business for a long time. This is not a new perfect Hilton type resort. It is a traditional Victorian House with the charm and ambience of the era, yes it may have a little chipped paint, a creaky floor or a narrow stair, but thats the character you come to enjoy. The longer you stay the more you feel at home and part of the family. The morning breakfast was so special each day, different gourmet food served on different themed settings. The dining area recently renovated was bright and nicely decorated. The conversations with Andy and Bob were so special, getting to know them and the surrounding area. The location is unbelievable. Right on the Marginal Way. Minutes away from downtown Ogunquit and Perkins Cove. The sun rising over the water from our room was breathtaking. We took so many pictures of the lodge, the ocean, sunrises, marginal way, WOW just Wow. We can't wait to come back!!! Did I say there was a small private like beach 2 minutes away that was just awesome. I could go on and on. But I really hope you get the real picture of our favorite new place and our new friends, Andy and Bob. It was our anniversary and my wife's birthday. We were not disappointed!! read more

Location Location Location. Rockemere Lodge is situated directly on Ogunquit's "marginal way", a seaside path through town and the beach. It has lovely views of the ocean and you can hear the waves crashing from your room. The innkeepers promise great views and a lovely victorian home. As one said to me, "if you need a pool and a hot tub, keep going down route 1 you don't want to stay here" (there is free wi-fi, cable TV and they have DVDs you can borrow). Each room is decorated in its own unique fashion and most of them look directly onto the water. I was there before the summer season really started to pick up so there were few guests. It was a great feeling to have the place to ourselves and be able to always have the best table or the best window. Both the innkeepers were friendly. Doug gave us some quick tips and a helpful warning to get reservations for dinner becuase the town was so crowded that everning. Andy served the breakfast and spent a lot of time talking. I do mean a LOT of time talking. I was hoping to go to Maine to get away from my troubles, but that didn't mean I wanted to spend 60 minutes hearing about his. I was hoping for more about the area and the house and the work they had done on the place. I wished that there had been an easier way to have disengaged from the conversation so I had time to get my day started. In this case it might have been better if there were a few more people staying there to distract the owners attention. Would I stay there again ? I probably would want to try another place or two with a pool and other modern amenities and see how they compare . but if all I wanted to do was look at the water and relax, I would have no hesitiation in reccommending this place if you want to spluge a little on price in exchange for a great location. read more

This is my first time staying in the Rockmere. It was very charming and the owners are so friendly. Andy and Doug made our stay very comfortable and entertaining. Doug who cooks a wonderful full breakfast everyday. Everyday it was different and they are very accommodating with our needs. The rooms are queen size beds and bathrooms in every room. Blow driers in all the bathrooms. The rooms are nice size. DVD/VCR's are in all the rooms. They have a nice large collections of movies to watch. For the Christmas season, every bedroom was decorated with a tree. The Rockmere is within walking distance of the town. The house is right above "marginal Way" trail. The B & B has a wonderful view of the ocean. Highly recommend the B&B. The owners do chat with you at breakfast but understand when you need to go and start your day. Also, there was the most charming neighbor Uncle Phil, who comes to visit for breakfast to meet the new visitors. He made our morning everyday. read more

The good news is the inn is located in beautiful Ogunquit, Me. The bad news is the inn needs serious renovation and cleaning. Public spaces are cluttered with dusty furniture and Knick knacks. The breakfast is ok but don't you dare skip it without notifying the innkeepers. They will not take this lightly. Frankly, these innkeepers are like something out of a 1960's horror movie. UPDATE:: I am leaving my original review below however I have been given some information that likely explains the behavior noted below. A friend of a friend in the area knows this gentleman via family and has relayed there may be some unresolved health issues involved. There have been similar incidents like this in the past related to the condition. I would keep this in mind if you decide to visit Rockmere. As I stated, while I was there everything was fine so it may be just something he does after people leave. Sad, I hope he can get good treatment. Below are a series of emails received from the Innkeepers at Rockmere Lodge. This started from a minor, polite request that they shut off some music at night and escalated into the abuse shown below. I was genuinely surprised by the language because I really thought these people were just quirky. Many sites don't allow profanity so i had to modify their profane words. Please beware of this place and these people. "Talk about a -itchy note !!!! Don't insult Me by calling Rockmere Lodge Grey Gardens. You are Very Very Weird and need some help .And they do come to see us and Rockmere Lodge since We have been doing it for 25 years .Some people fit in and some just don't like You !And Odd Balls fits You more then us . Shame on You and your insults. And please don't tell your friend about our $5.of tour they are not welcome and We don't need their Money to help out the animals. How Rude You are and Bitchy . The nightmare began when we checked in, and innkeeper was very unwelcoming. Went up to our room and found it dirty and dusty, and innkeeper, Bob, said he would not have it cleaned for us. When I plugged in my hairdryer, it sparked and flamed, burned my finger, and took out the power in the room.When told of this latest problem, Bob told us that you can't plug in a hairdryer when outlets in room are being used. No one told us this before and no signs were posted, and he showed no concern for my burn or any of our troubles with his B&B. When I attempted to make nice, as we were traveling with two other couples, saying to Bob that I understand things happen and it would be nice just to get an apology. He then said if we didn't like it to leave. He went in the kitchen and returned saying the owner wanted all of us to get out. There were no reasons for his rudeness, and we have never been treated so horribly by an individual or establishment. After all that went on, Bob had the audacity to charge us for the night he kicked us out. If you are considering a stay there...Don't! read more

I agree with what has been written elsewhere here on this site. This is a place that is way past the prime of it's life. It is dirty and the furniture and fixtures are old and in some cases, non- functioning. I would encourage you to look elsewhere in this beautiful town! We stayed four nights at this lovely B&B and could not have been more pleased with the accommodations. The location is perfect for exploring the town, Marginal Way, Perkins Cove, and beach. We loved our room on the 3rd floor--nicely furnished, comfortable bed, and beautiful views. We also enjoyed exploring the rest of the home, with relaxing seating areas on the front porch, living room, and awesome lookout room, and paintings/artwork galore in every room. The gourmet breakfasts were delicious, served on nice dishes on the front porch tables (in good weather) or the formal dining room inside. Bob and Andy were the perfect hosts--so friendly and kind. DANGEROUSLY POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE ALERT: I apologize for the length of this message, but this is important to know if you plan to do business with the owners of Rockmere. Please read on. My wife and I are both professional people who live and work in the Philadelphia suburbs. We have stayed at hotels and inns large and small around the world but have never received such uncaring and frankly illogical customer service as we have from the Rockmere team. I have never before been motivated to post a negative comment on any travel site, but feel compelled to do so here, given our poor experience with Rockmere. We had reserved a Saturday and Sunday night stay at Rockmere because we were coming to pick up our college-age son, a Cornell student who was studying at Shoals Marine Lab off the coast or Portsmouth, ME. However, it turned out that our son was able to stay and study for a week longer than his original plan, so we needed to come and pick him up a week later. We thought it would be a nice birthday present for my sister and her husband, who live nearby in Boston, to let them stay at Rockmere instead of us on the nights we had reserved. I called to arrange this and spoke to someone named Doug, who said it was Andy's decision; I also sent Rockmere an email to this effect, then called a few times with no response from Andy. After I sent a few more emails, I received an email from Rockmere saying that I could not "transfer" my reservation, that I was being charged for both nights, and that my sister and her husband could not stay at Rockmere. When I called to inquire, Doug answered and commiserated with my position, but again said this was Andy's decision. Andy was again unavailable and Doug said I would have to call back later but that he would communicate my request and concerns to Andy. I called back later and Andy was yet again unavailable, so I asked to have Andy call me back.. Then I received a frankly nasty call from someone in Florida who said he was the owner of Rockmere: Bob I think he said his name was. As I tried to explain to Bob the reasonableness of having my sister stay at Rockmere instead of me and my wife, he kept saying that it was not Rockmere policy to allow transfers of reservations. When I pointed out to him that 1. I had already been charged for two nights, 2. that nowhere on the Rockmere website or in the in reservation confirmation was there a reference to this no-transfer policy, and 3. that Doug had confirmed that they had not re-booked our room, Bob said that their experience showed that people who transferred reservations were typically "not Rockmere guest types." Leaving aside the implicit bias in this comment, I explained that my sister was a department head at a Boston hospital and her husband was a PhD chemist; Bob went quiet for a while, then simply reiterated that "it's not Rockmere policy to allow transfers of reservations" and that i could take it up with my credit card company if I had an issue with that policy. At this point, I agreed to do just that. At the end of the day, where is Rockmere's customer service attitude? Facts: I had already paid for two nights, had to change plans unexpectedly, had immediate family members (who were "Rockmere-worthy") lined up to use our reservation, and Doug had confirmed that the rooms had not been re-booked. So at the end of the day, one of Rockmere's most popular rooms will go unused on a beautiful weekend, while my sister swelters in Boston, I contest a credit card charge, and Bob rages against the night in Florida. The Rockmere Lodge setting & grounds are SPECTACULAR. It's directly next to the Marginal Way halfway between downtown Ogunquit & Perkin's Cove. Location couldn't be better. Ocean views are amazingly beautiful. That's the good news. I've read several reviews & the owner's responses to negative remarks (too bad they're so defensive & feel people are "out to get them"). It's all about expectations. If you seek an old-style Maine experience in "rustic", "cottage-like" surroundings you'll probably be OK. But there's a confusion here between casual and messiness & poor management. This is NOT an upscale lodge, 2 stars, 3 max. Definitely not a candidate for Select Registry. Price point is debatable. The Lodge itself has great potential. It's a lovely older structure but overdue for a serious remodel. Owners say that rooms have been upgraded recently; if so not professionally done. Repairs seem to have been completed in a haphazard, amateur manner. (The free standing room AC unit sits on the floor w/ a big hose running though a board in the window. Wooden molding replaced w/ plastic. Dangling electrical wires look dangerous. Paint is cracking inside & out, shingles are rotting, the wallpaper is sad, the paint colors & rugs are dark, dreary & outdated. Bed linens & towels are cheap & worn thin, the windows filthy. The entire place is overrun w/ plastic flowers, cheap beach junk decor & dust. Some artwork is quite nice, the rest not so much. It was hard to find an empty inch with all the "collectibles". The surplus of signs/messages (9 in my room alone) is not a big deal but adds to the tackiness. Breakfast is OK. No options, they just deliver your plate (I think some of mine had been sitting in the kitchen for awhile). The porch view is GORGEOUS & cloth table settings are a plus. Thankfully, the rotting porch rail did not collapse during breakfast. Several guests seem to be return patrons & know the owners. One of the owners was quite rude during my reservation & the other frankly a bit abrupt. Both seemed over-worked & annoyed w/ requests, maybe they just need help. Been a big fan of this place for 6 years now. With each visit you know what your getting; off season or full swing. Andy and Doug are extremely hospitable during the cooler months, and Bob is a welcome site during the warmer months. I've never been greeted with nothing but warm welcomes. Everyone loves Aunt Pat and Uncle Phil, can't forget them. The stories at breakfast are never boring, and breakfast is always top notch! Seems to me the other guests are returning like myself more than once a year. We all love the conversations, familiar faces, and sense of comfort, not to mention the views! My relatives were meeting up with us and found Rockmere Lodge. She called to ask some suitability questions but no one answered the phone. We didn't want to lose the rooms as it's a small place so we went ahead and used the online service. I called right after to try to get answers and Bob Brown, owner, picked up the call. Turns out this would not be a suitable place to stay. We were canceling with him before he got notice of our online reservation. We received unprofessional and discourteous service. First he said we shouldn't have booked if we had questions and that he always answers the phone and carries 2 of them around. THEN he said his first duty is to current guests and he can't be answering phones whenever a call comes in. His website says there's a cancellation fee to cover ramifications of losing potential guests but refunds are allowed. Because he suffered no income loss I requested a refund but then he gave excuse after excuse not to return the money. He wasn't nice at all. I was just there and I couldnt be more underwhelmed. Here's why: 1) Talkers - The owners didnt stop talking. They failed to read the non -verbal cues on when to stop talking. Plus they speak increadibly LOUD at breakfast. I just wanted to come down and have a quiet cup of coffee - NO CHANCE. 2) Breakfast - No choice. You get what they cook, either pancakes, french toast, etc. In every B&B I've been at you always get two hot choices or cold cereal. Not at this place 3) Dogs - Yes they have multiple dogs. I never saw them but don't let that fool you. Dogs will be dogs and they will bark - especially in the early AM when they need to go out and do their business. What I thought was a relaxing weekend of waking up when I wanted to tuned out to be having a real life barking alarm clock. they should disclose they have dogs on premises. 4) Old - The place is generally old and dirty. Rooms are large and comfortable. Entire facility is clean and well taken care of. In bad weather living room and porch are a wonderful escape and place to read. Right on the Marginal Way. Great ocean views. This was our first of what will be many stays. Gave them five stars but on a scale of 1 to 10 they are a 10. Owners are friendly and helped make our stay a wonderful experience. Breakfast was wonderful. We wish they served dinner. When you check in they ask if you have any food allergies or dislikes. They also post that on the front desk so you do not end up with something you can not or do not want to eat. In conclusion this B and B provides great lodging, great breakfast, great gardens and not the least fantastic ocean views. No reason to stay anywhere else in Ogunquit. read more

My wife and I (40 years married) stay at B&B's for the unique nature and unusual experiences. We are not high maintenance, but want cleanliness and decent food. We found what we enjoyed at Rockmere Lodgein Ogunquit. great location on the Marginal Way! Andy and Doug will provide all that you need and will engage with you (or not) as much as you may like. If you are gregarious, as we are, then hope for similar guests while there. We were there 2 nights as were 4 other couples. and all ten of us sat around a natural fireplace in the main LR each evening and compared our days, restaurants, etc. Andy and Doug dropped in and out and participated as appropriate. The breakfast food was tasty, filling, and different each morning. They have ice and glasses provided in the evenings for your own drinks or wine.We will likely return, but just hope the other guests that are there those days are as engaging as the folks we met this past weekend. As my wife told Doug and Andy, the place was exactly as billed, but no one had mentioned the 'entertainment' we enjoyed! Not for everyone, perhaps, but perfect for us. read more
