View of Rockaway Beach in Pacifica, from the parking lot facing south west...

Rockaway Beach is a hidden gem on the coast in Pacifica. It's a small parking lot that leads to hiking trails and a small beach with a tremendous view...

From the Moonraker restaurant. Very good with table side s'mores.

Not many beachfront hotels. They are like motels and Inn's. Moonrakers is a wonderful dining experience though. It outpaces its attached Inn.

A simple, small beach that many surfers come to. It's recommended that beginners don't surf here though. Lots of big waves! You can see the shore and views from the parking lot. I came here on a rainy day and it was very tranquil just listening to waves and seeing the birds run across the sand.

I spontaneously decided to book a last-minute escape at the Inn at Rockaway in Pacifica. I desperately needed a break from my children's constant demands and sought a peaceful retreat to rejuvenate my mind. Upon my arrival, Ariel, the staff member on duty, warmly welcomed me and graciously catered to my request for a quiet and private room. She assigned me a lovely room on the first floor, offering a breathtaking waterfront view. The serene ambiance and picturesque scenery instantly provided the calm and solace I yearned for. The room's interior was elegantly furnished and meticulously maintained, creating a welcoming and comfortable environment. The modern decor and attention to detail added to the overall enjoyable experience. Furthermore, indulging in the luxurious bath heightened the sense of relaxation and pampering during my stay. We wanted to do a little get away with our pups. I was looking for a beach in Pacifica that is quiet and less crowded. Lucky we got there early to find a good parking spot. The beach was smaller than I thought. The sand was pretty dirty from all of the seaweed and bugs flying around. While walking, I even saw a fresh dead bird on the sand. I wish they would done a better job cleaning. Overall our pups had a great time enjoying the beach.

    lots of birds and fishermen

Quiet, small beach. Right in back of Moonrakers and Nicks for view while you eat. The right side has waves that go all the way up to the rocks and I wouldn't recommend that area for kids and pets, the only people we saw in this area was a fisherman. If you keep walking to the end of the parking lot on the left there will be a small bridge you can take to a beach. The beach has darker black sand which is interesting and there are lots of fisherman, birds, and we even saw seals that were stealing the fishermen's catch. Because of the birds, there are constant droppings going into the water so definitely make sure your kids aren't opening their mouth if playing in the water. There is also that distinct seabird funky smell permeating the air.

Nature at its finest Truly a one stop natural attraction , Great place to explore with paved trails A public sandy beach and bathrooms. Family friendly outdoor fun Dog friendly trails Pacifica weather It's truly a unique type of fog and view by the ocean so Never turn your back to the ocean water and as always leave it the same way or cleaner so we can all enjoy it again tomorrow.

Smaller and quieter beach than Linda Mar Beach with some hotels and restaurants next to the beach. The sand is is more black and grainy vs the tan sand at Linda Mar Beach. You can either walk here from Linda Mar Beach on a paved trail (~1.5 miles) along Hwy 1 or you can park a a few different parking lots at Rockaway Beach. The parking lots do fill up fast on a nice day. There are some surfers here, but most are at Linda Mar or close to the Pacifica Pier. This beach is not very big, but there are less people as well. You can hike up the hill that is between Rockaway Beach and Linda Mar Beach for a great view! If you like crab sandwiches, go to Nick's Delta Diner at Rockaway Beach for lunch or dinner.

During my adolescence, I believe it was the Ramones that screamed-sang, "Rock, Rock, Rockaway Beach!" on my Sony Walkman in their unmistakably dulcet tones. Among the series of beaches along the stretch of the Pacific south of the city, this one actually felt more like a travel destination just because it has the amenities you would expect: a large hotel, several tourist-centric shops, and a couple of long-standing restaurants including Nick's with their famous albeit greasy crab sandwiches (review: https://bit.ly/3Hw51JQ). Probably not a coincidence, the beach has the same name as its more famous counterpart on the south shore of Long Island. That's the beach the Ramones were yelling about. This lower profile beach features a whole lotta limestone rocks and plenty of scenic views. What's more, there's a nice paved walkway that connects Rockaway to the bigger Pacifica State Beach over a hill with a manageable series of switchbacks. You can also continue onto Mori Point by way of more rustic trails going northward. Rock, Rock, Rockaway Beach! RELATED - Exploring the Pacific side of the peninsula? My happy place! Great spot to just stop and take a break from life's stresses. I love watching the wild ocean hitting the rocky shore of Rockaway. Awesome to see all the shops and restaurants open & busy again with everyone enjoying the beginning of Fall!

Looking for a get away from the busy cities, this is the place to go. Not busy at all during weekday that we went, nice trails, nice places to eat and eat and a peaceful beach area. It's even more beautiful during night since it's not overcrowded. The birds and squirrels by the beach will like some treats so take some when you go.

I enjoy stopping by Rockaway Beach when visiting Pacifica. The beach itself is rather small and during high tide comes right up to the rocks, leaving very little room for any actual walks on the beach. It is, however, an amazing scenic spot that is a good jumping off point for trails that hug the coast. There is free parking (never had issues finding a spot) and a few small shops and restaurants. Nice place to get out stretch if you're driving along Highway 1 with clean restrooms near the shops, I usually swing by here when driving or exploring this part of the coast, even if it's just to watch the dramatic waves run up on the beach and see the fog rolling over the bluffs Review #26 of 100 review goal in 2021

I didn't know the Pacifica Pier was known for crabbing and fishing. We came here for a "brisk walk" on an exceptionally warm Spring day. It was in the high 80's to low 90's in most of the Bay Area. Out in Pacifica it was a perfect day! NO FOG, nice cool breeze and a pleasant 70° I didn't even attempt to look for parking around the pier. I drove through downtown and found a spot in the neighborhood, about 5 minute walk from the Pier. There were a good amount of people out an about. Soooo many folks on the pier; crabbing and fishing. For good reason: "Pacifica is home to one of the best fishing piers in the state. Because of the number and quality of the fish caught off Pacifica's shores, the pier has earned a number one ranking among anglers in the Bay Area. Although fishing can be good year round, many consider the summer months to be the best when salmon and striped bass can be caught. No admission is charged and no fishing license is required at the Pacifica Municipal Pier." - https://www.cityofpacifica.org/departments/public-works/field-services/pacifica-pier "The L-shaped, 1,140 feet long pier is officially named the Reverend Herschell Harkins Memorial Pacifica Pier, after the much-admired Reverend from the Little Brown Church. Located at Sharp Park Beach, Pacifica Municipal Pier was opened in November 1973. It was built as a cooperative development of the City of Pacifica, the Wildlife Conservation Board and the California Department of Fish & Game. Famous for its salmon runs and winter Dungeness crabbing, the pier attracts anglers from around the globe. Other species caught at the pier are Jack Smelt, White Croaker and Striped Bass. The pier, a designated site by The Whale Trail, is one of the best places to watch humpbacks and gray whales lunge feeding, tail slapping and if you're lucky breaching." - https://www.visitpacifica.com/things-to-do/pacifica-municipal-pier

Heck yeah, sign me up! There were lots of dogs and their humans all over Pacifica State Beach this past Saturday, for the annual World Dog Surfing Championship. So many dogs doing their thing (ie. peeing in the sand in front of beachgoers, flicking dirt onto people as they dug holes in the sand... but surprisingly not a lot of barking), playing with other dogs, and getting spoiled by dog-lovers with so much attention, as well as toys and treats from vendor tents in the back. There were plenty of items for sale including cute T-shirts from California Canine, and plush squeak toys and travel accessories from P.L.A.Y. (Pet LIfestyles and You). But there was no food for humans for sale at any of the tents, which was odd for this type of event.. not even snacks or drinks. But I guess it's good that the event was located right next to the Taco Bell Cantina. And at least they had porta potties available at the beach near the parking lot. In order to view the actual dog surfing, you had to be in the water, some of us even knee deep. So it's good I wore shorts on this day cuz that made it super fun to get up close and personal with these awesome dogs, some even surfing right toward me as I took photos and cheered them on with the rest of the crowd. The big question we had before attending was, do the dogs really surf by themselves? And how? Well here's how it worked. The dogs were grouped into heats (small, medium, and large dogs... tandem, etc.) Then two or three boards went at a time, near the shoreline of the water. There would be a at least one human at each end (in the water, and near the shoreline) for each dog or pair of dogs. One human was further in the water and would wait for the waves then give the surfboard a push toward the shore once the dog was balanced on it (some dogs even sitting on the board instead of standing), the other human would catch the dog/board on the other end... that is if the dog(s) didn't fall off into the water, or jump off and start running into the crowd. Those that stayed on the surfboard while gliding on the water apparently got more points, since this was a contest and they were being judged. The same dog would have multiple turns over and over, it's like no limit to how many tries... but I think it was mostly to put on a good show for us viewers :D The speaker system wasn't that great, so it was kind of hard to hear the announcers and tell what was going on if you were just lying on the sand, stretched out on your beach blanket or mat, instead of joining the crowds in the water. It would have been better if they had music playing or something like that to make it a little more lively. But it was fun regardless, getting to just relax, lounge, enjoy a picnic and conversation with one of my favorite people. And entertaining enough to watch other people's dogs all throughout the area, and talk to their owners. They also had a fashion show, with dogs wearing fun costumes, some even matching their humans (ie. a couple and their two dogs all dressed like watermelon). Some aspects of this event made it seem somewhat chaotic at times. Parking wasn't too difficult to find in the nearby neighborhood, but traffic was a bit slow and confusing getting there. Also, volunteers/staff at the event often yelled to tell people to make space for the surf dogs on the sand, like they were walking the red carpet or somethin, and judges yelled to tell people in the water to move, if the dog ended up floating in your direction while "surfing".  There probably could have been a little bit better organization, but I actually liked the subtle chaos and unpredictability, I mean as long as the dogs were having fun, and they had safety measures in place for everyone (police, fire truck, first aid, medic truck), attendees, especially dog-lovers, had a lot to appreciate about this unique and free event on the beach! We certainly had a good time :)

"Restoration activities have helped the area recover from invasive species infestation and centuries of use by humans. In the 1700s, the Spanish mined a nearby limestone quarry to supply whitewash for San Francisco's Presidio buildings. An Italian immigrant, Stefano Mori, purchased 19 acres of farmland here in 1888. Mori built a guesthouse/restaurant, the Mori Point Inn, which developed a notorious reputation during the Prohibition days and was operated by the family until the 1940s. Mori Point was a site of gravel and sand extraction during World War II; quarrying and later off-road vehicle use left the landscape scarred.
