This truly might be one of our favorite places on earth!!!! it is the most magical cliff sides with large amounts of succulent and foliage trails, beach access, and happy dogs with a chance to spot paragliders. It's a perfect location to go on a "urban hike" or have a picnic. There is parking but can get full on a weekend. There are lots and lots of dogs at this location, many of them off leash, which does not bother my family, but if you are dog averse, it might not be the best place for you. Please be respectful and pack out any trash you bring to this stunning spot!!

Fort Funston is a fun dog friendly beach for dogs to roam and play. Be prepared for a mud masked dog face. We like to go with furiends as a pack walk along this beach and hike trail. Plenty of parking and there is a water fountain along the paved trail. The days we've come have mostly been overcast. We hope to come one day when it's truly sunny.

Quick take: great place to cool off Such a nice place to cool off during the summer heat in the rest of the Peninsula. Lots of families and people walking their dogs. Some leashed and some off leash. We walked down the beach until we came to a killer flight of stairs back to the parking lot. Definitely a challenging flight of stairs. The weather and views are worth the huff and the puffs.

Always an enjoyable experience here!

Fort Funston is stunning!!! Dogs are allowed off leash and there are a lot of different trails and areas to walk around so it never feels too crowded. The parking lot is free and there's lots of available spaces even on the weekends. I would recommend bringing a jacket because it can be very windy even on sunny days since you're close to the ocean.

I love love love Fort Funston. It is my favorite place in the Bay Area. A fully off leash dog friendly beach vast majority of dogs are friendly with humans and dogs, some owners choose to keep their dogs on leash. There is a nice accessible partially shaded loop and a sandy beach side that is only accessible via a relatively difficult sandy stair trail. Parking is plentiful and rarely full, even on busy days. It can get really windy sometimes which makes it cold and at its worst, inhospitable. Once I went when the wind was so strong my exposed skin was stinging even the next day from being sandblasted lol, I recommend checking the weather before hand. You'll see fishermen, kites, paragliders, and lots of dogs here :)

Beautiful trails overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Love this place where I take my dog for walks off leash. This spot is very safe, no cars and my dog can't run out onto the street. I love that this place has ocean views, different trails with varying degrees of difficulty, walk on sand or dirt trails. I can also walk down to the water and beach. Fantastic place!

If you have a dog, COME HERE! This is a gorgeous spot on the west side of the city with ocean views and walking paths where pretty much everyone has a dog or a small child with them running free and enjoying the space. Parking is free, they have restrooms, benches, tables and there is even a viewing platform where you can watch hang gliders. The five star rating is earned and once you come here, you won't be able to stop. The only negative thing I can say about Fort Funston is that they need more trails and more play areas so I can spend more time with my dog here.

I've been hiking around fort Funston over the years - great place to hike. I recently got a dog and brought her here for her first birthday... perfect spot for dogs. She loved it. 100s of well behaved off leash dogs zooming around. We packed a picnic and we were able to find a table. Tables on walkway above beach. Then we packed the picnic and headed down to the beach. Long walk down - but worth it. Long straight beach - dogs can run without getting out of site. Can't overemphasis what a gem of a spot for dogs this place is. Absolutely awesome.

Fort Funston is a fantastic place for beautiful views and cute dogs. A nice large parking lot and a paved path makes this an easy place to go.

Horse waste

Thanks to all the jerks that feed crows (ravens) either giving them food directly or leaving trash with food content, there are trash containers! the parking is now infested by huge crows and colonies of smaller ones. Those stupid people should receive $25k in fine like in some national parks. Be aware that if you leave your car there, it won't take long before those birds rip apart the rubber of your sunroof sealing, roof racks and even wipers and scuff the paint.

Happy dog

Ask the Community - Fort Funston

Is it possible to bring a sterno to make s'mores with a small group?

I'm not sure but I know there's park ranger stations there,so maybe you could call ahead and ask? Otherwise there's posted signs and there is a place you can have a camp fire in sf

Anyone know if you can park at fort Funston as of at this moment?

You can park inside the park sunrise to sunset or you can park off the main road, highway 1 after Daly city street

Is there a way to get to the beach without having to go up and down that massive sand hill?

There is a beach access to the north of the parking lot that requires walking north on the Coastal Trail to north of the Battery Davis entrance. That access trial is still sandy and somewhat steep, but the bluff is not as high there.

Does your delivery work? Can I order food now?

There is no food service at Fort Funston park site.

Anyone know if you can park at fort Funston as of right now?

Yes you can.

Is there only one way to & from the dog beach from the parking lot?

Yes. You can walk out of the lot North bound and follow the trail for about 3/4 a mile and there is a sand path down. Otherwise you can go from the Southeast corner of the parking lot (by the paragliders) and walking down the park steps. Both ways… Read more

My sister and I arrived before 8am at the Watershed parking lot and barely found a space. We did the trail that took us to the West Point Inn for the pancake breakfast and round trip was close to 5 miles so it was a great workout. There's gorgeous views and well! On the way back to the 101 however it's a mess. The road on the way down is crowded with parked cars, which makes driving through challenging. That's the only thing about this park, other than that I'd love to come back in spring when everything is green and vibrant!

Early June with mild coastal temp, 50s-60s. Started up Matt Davis Trail in the foggy forest, to Pantoll Campground, to West Point Inn where we can look down to the top of the fog layer, to the Fire Lookout building at the Peak. Then we came down reverse but split off to Steep Ravine and Dip Sea trail after the campground. I've also always wanted to climb that ladder. This hike provided views of the Pacific ocean on the West as well as views of Richmond-San Rafael Bridge on the East side. I thoroughly enjoyed the cool lush forest, but actually my favorite section was the single track along the slope of the open area after the Mt Tam State Park sign.

Let's also close down the streets from cars one day a week in the Summer so people can ride their bikes, skate, rollerblade, play and dance in the streets! How about on some warm weekend days we put huge concerts there that fill the grass for as far as the eye can see so people can bring all their friends to enjoy food, drinks, and music together. And the lake... let's make it so people can rent boats, and if they don't or can't row, they can peddle so they, too, can enjoy the waterfall and life on the lake! Let's also have beautiful statues around the park, definitely a Shakespeare Garden, and let's throw in something for garden lovers, like a Botanical Garden (a big one) and a Conservatory of Flowers. For more culture, let's add a Japanese Tea Garden with more lakes and flowers, and even a bridge in the shape of a circle. Let's also make this accessible to everyone, so some days, the museums are free (ie, usually once a month). And some entrance fees are lower for locals. (Check the websites.) Aaaaaand this is Golden Gate Park, and this is my favorite park in California, if not the entire country.

We really enjoy coming to Lafayette Park Playground this morning for an early Easter egg hunting…read moreevent--it's quite unique compared to other playgrounds in the city. The layout is more challenging and perfect for little explorers who love to climb, balance, and stay active. My 3-year-old always finds something new to do, and it keeps them engaged for a long time. I also appreciate that babies aren't left out--there are designated areas where younger kids can safely play too. The restroom is conveniently located and clean, which is a big plus for families. That said, some of the rocky edges can be a bit risky for adventurous kids, so it's definitely a place where you'll want to keep a close eye on them at all times. The only downside is parking--it can be pretty tough to find a spot, especially during busy times. Overall, it's a fun and exciting playground that's great for kids of different ages, as long as you're prepared for a bit of supervision and a parking hunt!

There is a rather large and modern kids playground and even more large grassy areas, both for those who want to lounge and for the dogs that want to run around.
