This is my go to surf shop. I have taken boards here for repair and bought new and used boards from them. I find them always very helpful, friendly and honest. Their prices on boards and gear seem fair too. Also, they are also honest with beginners. I chatted with them about it before because I have seen people out on big days with rental boards where honestly it is unsafe for them to be out, but those people rented from a different shop in town. I really appreciate that they won't rent to beginners when conditions are unsafe for them to be out (both for them and for the rest of us). read more

Initially came to buy wax, but after surfing for a while I decided to ask questions about appropriate board sizes for my build. From trying different things out and making progress, I realize my boards are tailored to people larger than me. I want to upgrade my longboard and shortboard so I asked for some guidance on what to look for when I decide to pull the trigger on new boards and Jeremiah did not disappoint. Sonlight has been instrumental in my surfing journey! After taking some lessons on Oahu, I came back to CA both excited and scared to get into surfing full-time. My first experience in the shop was coming in with my girlfriend to try on wetsuits. It being our first time getting into wetsuits, it could have been terribly awkward, but Indigo was awesome and helped us through the process, answering all the questions we had. Even as complete newbies, we were made to feel welcome. After that, it was easy to make the decision that Sonlight would be my go-to for all things surfing. Jeremiah and Dana are also both amazing and incredibly helpful. I've learned so much about surfing and the local beach (Linda Mar) through my visits to the shop. They are always happy to give insights to help you progress your surfing, understand the conditions, and stay safe. They truly know their customers and are able to deftly cater their advice to suit each person's style and needs. Jeremiah, in particular, has helped introduce me to several boards that have been perfect fits for me and where I'm at in my surfing progression. In addition to that, he's been invaluable counsel during several custom board orders. Without his advice and guidance, there's no way I'd be having as much fun as I am right now. I had a great experience at this surf shop! Everyone was extremely friendly. We came on a questionable Monday with significant winds and they gave us their honest input on what they thought of the surf on this day. We decided we would go for it and try the waves, they recommended we go towards the Tacobell in the area (which is beautiful btw!!) Was a total of $40 to rent a surfboard and a wetsuit for the day (until 30 minutes before closing, so 5:00) Good vibes, nice environment, friendly people, reasonable prices. Asked for a fin box repair and color match and this is what I got!? Super bummed!!!! The repaired fin sits 1/4" higher than the other fin. Also there's repair resin finger prints all over the tail of the board. Take you board else where!!! read more

This review is for something a bit specific -- ding repair. The experience at Sonlight is pretty delightful. If you need specific its for these reasons: 1. Drop off the board and get an estimate -- shockingly this is not a service one can commonly expect. 2. AMAZING -- rental fleet - some priiiimo boards in their demo/retnal quiver. Of course they have the obligatory soft top longboards. But amazingly they have quite a few late model shorties from mayhem, and firewire. 3. Text notification for pickup. 4. I'm a total newbie. I walked in today to learn more about the lay out of Linda Mar and which part to start out at. My friend and I were completely welcomed by the staff (didn't catch their name). They were encouraging, generous with their time and overall super friendly! I agree with the other reviews that it didn't give the typical "exclusive, too cool for newbie" surf vibes that I sometimes come across in other rental or stores. These guys have always been super nice when I have gone in, but the other day they exceeded my expectations. I bought my first "real" (epoxy) board used on craigslist and I took it in to get fins and a leash. Jeremiah talked to me about what fins would be the best kind for me right now and after listening to my concerns about the fact that I might be rough on them, offered me a set of used higher quality fins instead of trying to sell me the new fin set. He also checked out my board, offered me advice on what to keep an eye on in regards to one of the already repaired dings and put the fins on for me! You never know who you're going to meet some days, and that was my case when I worked in a small coffee shop that is now closed in Pacifica. Lots of times Jeremiah who is the owner of sunlight would come in and get a chai and we would say hi and what's up to each other. I later saw him at a buddies church and then we chatted more. I finally made my way over to his shop in June 2020 and tried on a couple suits, and left with a brand new rip curl wetsuit, experience was perfect. Even during a pandemic Jeremiah was easy-going, courteous, willing to let me try a new suits, and made my purchase a breeze because I was new to the wetsuit game. His staff was also rad. Support local, Their business was started by Jeremiahs wife's family back in the day and they put their heart and soul into it. You need to shop local because Jeremiah and his family live, teach, And breathe surfing! They put their heart and soil in this business, it's transparent and clean. Update: Sonlight remains the best surf shop around. When Dan and Robin retired, I was worried it wouldn't be the same, but then I met Jeremiah! What a great and knowledgeable guy. Sonlight is a place where the staff will never make you feel stupid. Jeremiah guided me into buying my favorite board ever (as well as quickly doing a repair on it when I managed to immediately ding it). I don't see a point in going to any other surf shop again. Sonlight for life! Side note: Sonlight does a daily instagram video surf report, which is sooo helpful (especially since Surfline has made Linda Mar a "premium only" cam). We have had excellent service here four times now. First two times were to buy wetsuits, next time was to get booties. Even though we walked in knowing nothing about what we wanted/needed, the staff has always been patient and respectful with our questions. I'm pleased with the equipment we bought and it had held up well. The last time we were here, we came to get surfboards. I think the person helping us was one of the owners. He was very tactful and gentle in telling us that we really had no business buying a board there...yet! We are extreme novices and it's not the right investment for us until we get a little more experience. I am so thankful he was honest with us and told us to go to Costco. When it is time for my "big girl" board, this is where I will be going. Also, they have a great rental program which was another option he gave us that is worth checking out. read more

Robin and Dan Moreno own the the Sonlight Surfshop, in Pacifica, California. Sonlight in my mind the best shop on the coast. They helped us pick out the suits and have been sharing their surfing wisdom and experiences with us for the past few months. If you are ever in Pacifica and want to catch a wave or are looking for some new gear, make sure you go there. While their prices are not always the lowest they always have the best service and really love the sport. I would rather spend a little bit more at sonlight and know that if I ever have any issue they will help me figure out the best way to take care of it. So far we have bought leashes, a hoodie, a board, wax, stickers and wetsuits and have never been disappointed with the service or the product. You don't find many shops like sonlight these days so when you do you try your best to support them. Back in November I took 16 people surfing that had never even been in the pacific ocean before. Dan and Robin helped get everyone outfitted and even ordered a special wetsuit for one of my large friends to use. Everyone had a blast and the stoke for surfing was fully enforced. If you are ever looking to get someone into surfing go here for your rentals. They will get your friends in the proper suit and are one of the few shops that will rent booties, a must have if you want to be in the water more than 15 minutes. read more

I usually don't write Yelp reviews but I had such a great experience, I wanted to share it. The morning before I bought the board I had a really terrible experience surfing that actually made me want to quit. It really shook me up. I made a last minute decision to stop in to Sonlight on the way home. Jeremiah came over to me while I was looking at boards and instantly turned my day around. Never bought anything more than wax here but want to give a heads up to out of towners: this is the place to go for any rentals, gear advice, etc. super convenient location and the manager (I should know his name but don't unfortunately) and staff are super helpful and friendly. I would love to have less people in the water, but reality is people come to learn in Pacifica. I've been to every surf shop in the bay. Others may have a bigger selection and may dazzle u with a fancy exterior, but when it comes to customer service, no shops welcome you better than sonlight. I like Sonlight Surfshop a lot. Both Jeremiah and Dana are really friendly and I'm embarrassed to say that I've come in to get a board fixed up not just once, but twice. One repair was pretty minor, but the other one was my buddy's fin driving into my rail. It was so bad that it caught the attention of another customer who looked straight at me with eyes wide and dropped one of those, "Daaaaannnnngggg. That sucks." But, it's all good because Sonlight patched it up and I was good to go! One of my friends brought in her Hypto Krypto that looked like it was nearly broken in half. I just surfed the thing after the repair and it's solid. I will also come in to ask questions and gather supplies. I tried to buy a lock box last summer, but I didn't think my key would fit. Jeremiah told me not to worry about because if it didn't fit, I could return it with no problems. We spent about 15 minutes trying to make it work, but it didn't. True to his word, he offered a full refund. I opted for store credit because I needed a new pair of booties. As others have highlighted, the customer service here is what makes this place shine (Get it? Like sun light?). In fact, the rest of the staff is pretty chill. I've picked their brains about performance fins and different boards. Very knowledge and will work with you to really try to narrow down what will work best for you. If I'm looking for anything specific like a new traction pad or some fins, this place is my first stop. They don't always have what I'm looking for, but you better believe they would get my business if they do. read more
