Today was such a fun day! A room full of energy, great vibes, challenges and a great workout! Phew! Prime Climb is located in Wallingford right off the highway . Very easy to get to, follow the signs all the way to the back and you will find it! When you go in , you get checked in, there are cubbies and hangers. You can bring in your water if you wish . The rental will include harness and shoes. Make sure you wear gym Gear and dress comfortably! The employees will go Through an orientation step by step making sure you know how to take off the buckle from the Harness and how to fasten it. Safety tips, how to come down from the top when You have climbed up. Also the importance of the number and colors. I didn't know that the smaller the numbers it was somewhat easier than the others. They were all challenging but some more than others. There was bouldering, top rope and lead climbing, and auto belay system. This is a great place if you want to conquer fear of heights in any way or to work On upper body strength. I did great going up . It was like a puzzle, hands would get tired, shake but the most scary part for me was going down. Why?! We are tied and secured!? Matt was such a wonderful teacher for the time we spent there . Showing us step by step and cheering us on. Then we met Tracy whose a member there . Tracy was soo kind and nice also to give us tips and work with us! Tracy didn't let me give up when I felt tired. Great climbing gym, lots of top rope options for both belay and autobelay, there's one long boulder wall downstairs and then a super cool secluded cave area on the second floor. Good selection of gear and some merch for purchase, and the staff was super nice and helpful as always. 2019 Update - I've been to Prime Climb several times in the last year. My comment from 2014 about route rating was short lived. I'd say the majority of routes in the gym are in the 5.6-5.9 range, which is where most climbers with some experience feel comfortable. There are some routes that are also easier, down to I believe 5.4, and a few that are in the 5.10+ range, with only a couple "impossible" 5.12+ climbs. Mountain Fun has also been updated. While most of it's auto-belayed climbs are easier than Prime Climb, there are a couple harder ones, possibly 5.9+. read more

Great for all experience levels! Came to Prime a Climb with two friends on a very hot and humid Saturday looking for something different to do. Neither of us had been climbing other than in Girl Scouts or at a birthday party more than 15 years ago, and have varying levels of athletic ability. We booked the "advanced try a climb" which is an hour and half session with a belayer, all equipment included, for about $32 a person. Our belayer was Brian, the owner, who was extremely friendly, knowledgeable, supportive, and patient. Brian immediately asked for our names upon meeting us, which set the precedent for his close attention customer care and rapport. After getting suited up, we took turns on various climbs of varying difficulty, Brian giving us pointers and challenging each of us along the way. He guided us to choose each run based on our wants and needs, and introduced us to some of the regular climbers. Everyone we met was extremely supportive and friendly. Finally, although we were booked for an hour and a half, Brian let us climb for close to two hours, never rushing us or pushing us along. Highly recommended. Prime Climb is a phenomenal rock climbing facility. The walls may look dated, as most new-age gyms have giant towers of underutilized concrete, but the setters make great use of the space provided. To the reviewers who say the routes are tough, a little side note on CT climbing history....CT and most of New England have some of the stiffest climbing grades in the country. Heck, climbing on the continental US pretty much started here in CT, before migrating westward. The routes at Prime Climb seem to be set at what actual rock climbs outside feel like, which makes sense since it seems like the entire staff here are all dedicated outdoor climbing enthusiasts. Many of its patrons can be heard discussing routes at local crags, or those of far distant climbing destinations. With so much real climbing chatter, it makes for a very comfortable environment if you are an avid climber, or just getting your feet wet with the sport. The route setting at Prime Climb is top notch! I have climbed at gyms all over the United States, from little hole in the wall bouldering barns to the massive concrete mega-gyms, and the setting here is some of the very best I have climbed. The hold selection is prime, routes flow well, and it is readily apparent that thought is given to clipping holds and climber sizes. Many gyms tend to make holds further apart, or remove feet to make a route feel harder, but not here. The setters do a great job at creating fun, flowing, movement that is attainable by all. While visiting Prime Climb, I happened to be witness to a belay lesson, which I was very impressed with. Many gyms today rush the belay lessons by giving the new climber a GriGri and a quick lesson in pulling rope. The lesson I witnessed at Prime Climb was incredibly thorough. The staff member went over all the safety aspects of the harness before even approaching a rope. He then taught the AMGA approved method of belaying on an ATC and then expanded into lesson on the GriGri. I wish more gyms today would teach belay lessons more like this, as there would be a lot less accidents outside. One of the greatest benefits of Prime Climb is their "sister" company Mountain Fun, which is next door in another building. Mountain Fun is their auto-belay and party facility, which really helps reduce the amount of children running around the gym on a busy day. Overall, it seemed to me that Prime Climb was very much a rock-climber's gym, but also had a highly welcoming environment for anyone new to or interested in the sport. Coming from San Diego, CA, this gym is very small, old, and looks outdated, but I loved it! I love climbing in general, which gave it more appeal, but besides that, this place was very quaint. It's nothing glamorous, but if you want routes that'll challenge you in top rope or bouldering, this is a good place to train indoors! There are about 30+ top rope routes, a bouldering wall and a bouldering room (located upstairs). The top rope walls are only 40m high. The location is kind of hidden, it's all the way in the back of several buildings. If you're coming through the gate, go far left, and follow all the way down. It'll lead you to the parking lot. I'm not sure how much it is because I went with somebody as their guest. Happy climbing! read more

I wanted to write an update, since I went ahead and bought a membership here. Crowded. The gym is usually crowded. Not to the point where you can't get your climbing in, but is you want to work in the cave, you'll have be waiting your turn. This goes for pretty much any part of the gym except the 5.10+ walls. I've been working on bouldering more than top-roping here, so that's where my focus is. I really wish there were more corner bouldering areas here. I like getting to work on my grip strength with the challenging routes they have here, but I really miss being able to work my way up a corner when bouldering. Pretty much all of the bouldering is along one long wall, with some overhang. There is a room upstairs with a more severe overhang, and a couple off side walls, but these aren't always taken advantage of for corner climbs. I have liked the top roping areas. They have really cool contours and corner areas in the walls here, so that balances out the bouldering, but I don't get to top rope as much. There is an area with a steep slope, which is interesting and provides a change of pace. They have some kind of challenge course, but I don't know when they bust it out, but I'd be interested to check it out when it does finally get used. The cost is fair and a three-month membership is a decent deal, and if you go for the year, you save much more. read more

I have been going to Prime Climb on and off for the last 14 years. The staff is fun, knowledgeable and friendly. It's like a big family. The climb routes are changed out frequently which keeps everything fresh. Mountain Fun (the smaller sister gym) is a great place for a date night, a girls night, a fun family outing or a weekly sweat session. You have to be belay certified to climb in the larger gym but, Mountain Fun you are self belayed so for the first time climber it is a great introduction to the activity. read more

This is our favorite rock climbing gym so far! Plenty of rope routes and affordable. Brian not only checked is in, he tested our belay experience and then spent as much time as we wanted with him educating us and teaching us more skills. We had the best experience at Prime Club and can't wait to go back. They even have a separate building for auto belaying that most young kids use so they are not distracting or annoying while you climb in the main room. Wish we lived closer! They have a few lockers so bring a lock if you wish and there are lots of cubby holes. Clean bathroom too :) read more

Great gym. Setting is top-notch, staff is nice, routes are reset pretty frequently. Yes, the gym is definitely older and less decked-out than some of the bigger gyms in MA and NY, but it's still worth checking out. There are two rooms with toproping, including one pretty overhung wall (30-35°). Most of the walls have bolts and/or quickdraws, so leading is always an option. Although there is not that much space devoted to bouldering, the gym really utilizes the space that they do have. There is also a newly redone bouldering cave (50-60°). The only negative (depending on how you look at it) is that a lot of the holds are older and don't have much texture. Personally, I think this helps with grip strength and endurance, if you are looking to improve your climbing, although it may be a turn-off for newer climbers. read more

Looked promising but was a let down after I started to climb. I had brand new shoes and the holds were too worn down to have grip. I don't think the staff has every washed them. They charge premium prices like other well maintained gyms but lack the effort of keeping the gym to similar standards of most other gyms. I feel like I wasted my money and time here. This is a wake up call to management. I've recently visited two other local gyms and they were kept up to date and clean. I would suggest not coming here until this location cleans up their act. We have been coming to Prime Climb for several years as a family of four. Our kids have literally grown up in the place. The most distinguishing attribute of Prime Climb is the vibe and culture. When we started out there were so many accommodating people at the gym, not just the staff and owner but many of the other climbers. People legitimately want to see you succeed and give you beta. The kids climbing club has strong instruction but it more about facing your challenges, trying new things, and pushing yourself versus winning or being the best. In addition to climbing, my son is addicted to penny collecting. While everything at the gym is a dollar or 50 cents, The owner gets pennies from the bank so Zach can trade in a nickel he found or a quarter from his allowance for pennies. We have had kids birthday parties at Mountain Fun and it was fun, nonformal, and encouraging for all the kids. Their climbing competition Power Struggle raises money for a cause each year and I have seen the good that they can do. Adaptive climbing, Unified Sports, and other ways to connect people to the sport. Regardless of who you are or what you look like (on or off the wall) you are accepted and encouraged at Prime Climb. We have been to climbing gyms around the region and country and have not seen a climbing culture like the one at Prime Climb. Oh, the routes are challenging, make you use technique, and are fun as well. They have three different cracks, a barrel bulge, overhangs, lips, stemming corners, lack back climbs, a stellar bouldering area, and a separate climbing cave for those thinking of trying American Ninja Warrior. If you are not acqainted with technical climbing, it can be unnerving at first but there is always someone there to give you advice, to show you something, or to support you while you are there. The technicality of the routes mimicks outdoor climbing in the Northeast more than I have seen at other gyms. So while I never rate any product, place, or service I felt I had to rate Prime Climb. read more
