I have been shopping at Rock Paper Scissors since it opened. It has the best, most eclectic and tasteful goods that I have ever found in a single store. The proprietor has a keen eye for design and a good sense of value and utility. There is something for everyone at multiple price points. It is my "go to" store for presents, including gift cards. This is a little gem - worth driving up the coast for, along with its sister store, Smitten, a couple stores down the street. Rock Paper Scissors has mostly paper goods and small sundries and Smitten sells mostly housewares and some jewelry. The owner of this store has some kick-ass perfect taste. Lots of beautiful papers and books, stationery products and children's gifts. Also, some high-end bags, laptop bags and totes that you will not find anywhere else, even in the big city of Portland. A perfect place to shop for gifts for all - the other day I loaded up a bag full of cutesy tiny Japanese goodies for my 5 year old niece, and girlfriends and I always score here. Decor is also lovely and restrained with brick walls, super-high tin ceilings and the softest, sweetest golden Lab you ever met. You will easily hit the shopper's high in this store, slap down the plastic and walk out with an $8 Totoro refrigerator magnet, happy as a clam. read more

I love paper. I like scissors. And I tolerate rocks. This is a lovely store filled with a beautifully curated selection of paper products, stationary and cards, jewelry, home goods and children's toys. I could easily have spent hours (and big $) picking up a stash of greeting cards, journals or organizers or loading up on their woolen blankets, ceramics or other housewares from their selection of smaller makers. My new favorite? Peg and Awl goodies (a line of treasures and home wares made from reclaimed materials). The store can be pricey but you'd be hard pressed not to find a terrific and unique gift here for yourself or anyone on your list. Caveat: Some other Yelpers mentioned an anti-kid vibe and we certainly saw a little bit of that. The staff did seem slightly on edge with children touching things in the store but I thought they did a decent job trying to engage the kids in a "Keep Quiet and Don't Touch Anything" game. I 100% adore this place. Excellent selection of paper goods - including gems from Japan like Mnemosyne and Apica - as well as classic Rhodia notebooks. Also some really unique to-do list pads. Add to this some beautiful kitchen goods, including linens from Fog Linen Works, and I'm in love. Over the years I've visited, I've had great service. This time, I got some great mini pens, and the person who helped me went above and beyond in making sure that I would be able to get refills for them when needed. We walked into this store because there was a large white lab sitting on the stoop. We could not pass by this shop. When we got inside we were so impressed with the selection and presentation of the store. It is so well put together. The items they have for sale are just the right mix of what everyone needs in their lives from pens to paper to toys. Something for everyone. The dog was wonderful too and made our day. read more

I LOVE this store and am sad to hear about the folks who went there with children and didn't feel welcomed. I live in Maine and it is without a doubt my favorite shop in the state. Her eye is simply wonderful--especially when it comes to jewelry. So up my alley. When I go to this shop, I do so with out my 3 year old because it's my guilty pleasure and I only make it there 1-2 times a year and the folks there are always friendly and helpful. Great selection of gifts, but very non friendly towards children despite having a kids section. If you do not want parents with kids to buy from you here is a novel idea, do not have a kids section. My kids rule in a store is that they are allowed one item out, that is it. We were watched the whole time with hawk eyes. I got an eye on my kids ladies, thanks, but I bought a present for my wife up the hill at a store that appreciates our business for over priced novelty gifts. read more

I went into this place, looking to purchase a small gift for my kids. I was with my kids, and the three of us walked in, excited, based on what we could see through the windows. Immediately upon entering the owner (I assume) gave me a really harsh sideways stare. She didn't welcome us, didn't ask if we needed assistance, just coldly looked at us as if we had no business there. My older son began politely playing with a toy they had for sale, as kids normally do. Within ten seconds, she loudly informed us that the toys were for sale, not for playing with. They obviously didn't need my business, so I took my kids out and will never go back. I recommend that you avoid this place if you have children. read more

I have a love of pretty paper, and make it a point to visit paper/stationery stores in every city I visit. I discovered Rock Paper Scissors many years ago, and it is still my favorite of ALL of the paper stores I've ever been to. I have a weak spot for the many quirky gift boutiques in my hometown of San Francisco, which do a pretty good job of finding unique items, but Rock Paper Scissors really takes it to another level. On a recent trip to Maine, I had just stuffed my face at Red's Eats across the street when, ambling past the storefront, I was lured in by the hand-carved spoons in the window. What a tastefully curated collection of small handmade stuffed toys for babies, letter-pressed stationery, notebooks, washi tape, home goods, and locally made jewelry! This is an immaculately curated store full of twee postcards and various "adorkable" tchochkes. The whole Brooklyn/Portland aesthetic (irony, animals in suits, putting birds on things, etc), is teleported to Maine. Very entertaining to browse. My friend and I stopped on Wiscasset for lunch on the way to a wedding in Bar Harbor. We had a few hours to kill so we decided to make an afternoon of this one-street town. After a delicious lobster roll, we discovered this town's other gem: This creative and adorable boutique! I couldn't stop stacking things by the register, and as she rang me up I asked where in the world they collect all their great stuff from. "We've been in the business for ages and we search high and low in catalogs and suppliers, basically." LOVE this place - they have such great taste in their selection of items for sale. I can't imagine anyone leaving the store without finding something. I went in first on my own and then my husband and 4 year old came in and there was certainly a different vibe. Frankly I would be the same - my 4 year old could have done a lot of damage there if he hadn't been monitored and if it were my store I would have been pretty cautious about kids too. read more

I am a little surprised to read the bad reviews because I have only ever had wonderful experiences at this adorable shop and with the owner and other employees! Considering this little gem has some expensive things I can't say I'd be comfortable letting my kids 'play' with anything. But anyway, I love this place. One could spend an hour enjoying the wonderful staged vignettes of color, theme and design. As a kid, even though this store was kind of pricey, I always found little knacks to buy with my allowance money, this store surely brightens up a somewhat boring town. In my opinion, I don't like living in a town with houses from the 1700's and a bunch of antique stores, so this store and definitely a few others and the restaurants surely brightened this older town up! :) read more

For several years I have been stopping by this place whenever I'm in town. It never had a very friendly vibe but I continued purchasing things anyway. This year however was the worst! The owner of this place has no business being a shop keeper- at her best she was unfriendly but that turned into just being vicious while I was shopping with my family. My friend and I always stop here on our way to see friends in Maine after we land in Portland. We used to go on our way back to the airport but realized that never left us enough time, as there are always so many cool things in the store! I love this place so much, I can't even tell you. The only problem is once you walk in the door you want to buy everything. I'm only in Maine in the summers, so I tend to stock up on things when I am here. I love the carefully hand selected cards they sell; I send them for birthdays and special occasions and have gotten many compliments on them! When I was still in school I'd wrap my books in their rare paper. I love their selection of pens and notebooks and little things to get your desk organized. Over the years I have bought everything from my wallet to an official Studio Ghibli Totoro plush here. You can see the owners really care about the items they pick for their customers and a lot of care and time goes into the store. Anytime I'm driving through on my way to Boothbay I always stop in Wiscasset just to go here, the merchandise changes with some frequency so you can always find something shiny! read more

This shop in Wiscasset, along with Smitten, also owned by the same family is wonderful! The merchandise is unique, well made and definitely steps above the rest when it comes to what you can find in this Midcoast part of Maine. As stated in previous reviews, a lot of the items are delicate and high-end. The owner and her other coworkers have always been pleasant, helpful, and delightful. I have been in the shop when children have been in there and have never witnessed (as Alex G. from Florida wrote) "a really harsh sideways stare." Then he surmised that she felt they had no business there. I have worked in retail for many years and do know that children(and adults) break things. So I am sure that Alex is not giving the complete picture of the incident. How did his son politely play with the toy? If his son had broken it, would Alex had politely fessed up and paid for it? You see, it puts the shop owner or clerk into such a crappy situation. You think, if I charge for the broken item, I'll lose a customer and they'll never come back. Yet in this case the owner warned them, which ticked off the customer and he'll never come back and then decides to write a horrible review of the store. If a customer breaks something and you charge them, they'll probably never come back anyway. So, I guess warn the customers, charge them if they break it. You've lost them either way. Rock, Paper, Scissors is definitely a five star shop - classy - a shop that I am sure welcomes children. A shop you will want to keep going back to. read more

This is a great little store and the owners are great. It's not a playroom for kids. However, a few months ago I was disappointed by an older woman clerk there. I came in at a time when both owners and this woman were there and it's a small store. I walked around and she apparently decided I was going to shoplift something--she literally stood staring at me 6 feet away as I looked at paper. I guess she thought I was going to steal two dollars worth of postcards while standing within sight of 3 people. I was so uncomfortable I didn't buy some of the items I wanted to buy! I'm a Mainer and I wonder if she would treat some of the monied tourists this way. I'm not sure how soon I'll be back. The owner needs to hire need someone with basic customer service skills. read more

I love this store. The first time I went here was last summer, and I knew I would have to come again and again! It has a relaxed and artsy feel to it, and even though it is a small shop, there are sooo many things to see and purchase. It CAN be a bit pricey...but it is definitely worth it. For example, I bought a set of two cute bobby pins with a bauble of some sort attached, that had a pretty picture of a mysterious but elegant bird cage on it. They were $14, but I loved them and knew I would wear them for a long time. Both women who were working there were so friendly and sweet, and were chatting with us. Plus, if you love dogs, there is a very sweet retriever who lays on the floor napping or goes behind the counter. If you are allergic or afraid, don't worry, she won't bother you. But if you want to pet her she loves the attention and is very calm. Can't WAIT to go back!!!!!! read more
