They knew a lot about the items in the store and anything they were unsure of they found more information for me. The building itself is beautifully designed and a staple of Freeport history. My only concern was that my older mother had a difficult time getting up the large concrete stairs because there's no handicap-friendly entrance. However, our experience inside Abacus was wonderful. We will be back closer to Christmas time to stock up for Christmas!

I picked up what I needed and went to pay and another woman at that register was just as unfriendly as the older woman. Very disappointed as I traveled quite a ways to go to Freeport. Our first visit recently was good but not exceptional. It's a moderately large store with a very large areas set aside for gifts, toys, puzzles, Maine souvenirs, etc. We thought their classics section and history were a bit underwhelming, but we enjoyed going through bargain books and just spending time looking through the inventory. We did not find the staff particularly friendly; they seemed distracted even when we checked out. Maybe they were having a bad day... Even so, it's a nice bookstore and there are few better places to spend time anywhere.

Perfect spot to find a wedding or bridal shower gift. I had gone in to purchase a new tide clock for my mother, the mechanism in hers no longer worked (after many years). Before I even picked out a clock the employee informed me that the mechanism can be replaced for only 7 dollars while a new clock was 50 dollars. I was so impressed she informed me of this voluntarily and potentially missing a sale. I bought a new clock and plan to have the old one fixed. The other aspect it love about this store is the space. You can browse and see everything without feeling as though your purse will knock over a 100 dollar piece of pottery. Defiantly check this place out if you're in need of a unique gift.

Well, stop I did, to see if they had a gift for a friend's birthday. First, I love any store that smells like balsam as you walk through the door. The scent makes me feel like a kid again. I'm not from Maine (have been here long enough to feel at home), but as a kid we used to drive here from Ohio and spend a few weeks going up and down the coast. The smell of balsam reminds me of these trips. Second, I was shocked by the variety they had. Maple syrup, Maine souvenirs, crafting supplies, wooden figurines, and antiques. The have a sign stating that they "glue chairs". I didn't know that was a thing, but apparently, it is... They also sell wreaths and Christmas trees during the appropriate season. And finally, the owners were as nice as could be. They had out hot chocolate for the kids, and they wrapped my little gift up neatly. This little shop is well worth the drive into town because of how darn cute it is!

Talent on display…read more This store is absolutely amazing. The old building has at least a dozen rooms and hallways just filled with wonderful and creative arts & crafts items. Just so many different things that you can spend a whole heap of tie inside. All the items are made by Maine artists and craft people and the variety and all of the interesting colors, shapes and uses of the different items is impressive. Just about every type of cute, funny or sentimental crafty things can be found somewhere inside. Things out of wood, cloth, stone and paper. it's all here. Toys, clothing, garden ornaments, photos, drawings, animal stuff, holiday things, furniture, decorations and lots of cool items that exist for no reason other than to look nice. A wonderful store that is especially great around the holidays. Definitely not a tacky tourist store although some cool souvenirs can be found here.
