We came to see the Sculpture "The Awakening" which is a massive sculpture of a giant who is struggling to get out of the ground. It's not a single sculpture but five separate sculptures that make up "The Awakening". Great park to visit - not only for the sculpture but for some peace and quiet.

When we first got here, we noticed the park is in a pretty secluded area, and not many people were around unless they were going to the library that is connected to the parking lot. There are so many different parts of this park, including "The Awakening" sculpture, an amphitheater, a walking trail with a waterfront, and a Veterans memorial. The park was very clean, and we loved everything we experienced. The sculpture was so cool and is basically a steel man broken up into different separated body parts, who looks like he is trying to free himself from the ground. It's unbelievable how big this is in person, and we loved it. The Veterans Memorial was gorgeous and included significant quotes, a fountain, and American flags with every branch of the military included. The waterfront and trails were gorgeous, and we saw many HUGE ducks, cardinals, and wildlife. We loved the isolated walking trail because it had such beautiful views. Homes are being built around there, too, and the water would be such a gorgeous view to have every day from a home window. We weren't able to go to the amphitheater because they were getting ready for a summer night free concert event, but when we left, many people were gathering to go to the event. You can bring your own beer as long as it's in a can, so that's awesome and unlike many other public areas! Overall, if I lived in St. Louis, I could see myself regularly coming to this park and the surrounding area often. It's definitely a tranquil place where you can be one with nature and enjoy the views and entertainment.

There is a pond with paths around for fishing, covered picnic areas, benches, sports courts, and a huge play area that includes a water cool-down section (in Summer) for the children. There were lots of sidewalks that we could take through the park. It was very well-maintained and lovely. There was one area under construction during our visit. There were lots of Canadian geese that didn't want to be approached with their babies.

The length is ~5.5 miles with some spurs that would like up to Castlewood eventually. I've never done the link but know it exists. As an additional shoutout there is a little train in the park too for kids. It is a nice, unique experience for kids. So go for a family walk and let the kids go for a train ride.

Otherwise, this "park" is really just a trail head and parking lot. The trail is open to bikes, horses, & pedestrians. Take the gradually descending path a half mile from the parking lot to the scenic overlook. From there, the terrain changes from a steep bluff into a gradual slope resulting in a leisurely hike through the woods. Two miles from the scenic overview, the Bluff View trail ties into the Al Foster trail. It was a great family hike and I can see this trail becoming one of our family's favorites.

We came a bit later in the evening, close to closing time. You pretty much drive thru but there are areas you can get out of your car and sit at a picnic table, restroom break or even a little waking to sight see. You cannot get out of your car while driving thru the Bison area and dogs are not allowed at all, not even if they stay in your car. You can leave a small donation too that helps keep the park beautiful and maintained. A beautiful sighting for sure. The Bison were tucked away in the trees but we got a nice glimpse.

Based on the behaviors of the raccoons, it's safe to say they have been food conditioned. They headed right for the car when I cracked the window for pictures & to give the parents a better view. There were a couple of fawns, still spotted & a couple of "red dogs", as well as some youngish elk. It was well-suited to our needs, easy to access & free. There are facilities that are accessible and, should you want to brave the ticks, mosquitoes & other pests, picnic areas with trails. We didn't!

Phantom Forest Conservation Area was donated to Missouri Department of Conservation in 1994 by Ray and Claire Moore. The best add to this park is the Teddy and Friends accessibility friendly kid playground. The playground is vibrantly colored, soft padding for the grounds, accessible swings and other equipment. There are even musical elements of the space. Close by the park is their community center that has family friendly restrooms and diaper stations. Dogs are allowed in the park areas but not inside the center. The walking trails are very long so make sure you have enough time to explore. The trails are so wheelchair friendly but I recommend only skilled wheelchair users do the trails alone as there can be natural debris or elevation obstacles.
