Sally and Dr. Nguyen were absolutely wonderful. I'm someone who is always nervous at the dentist no matter what, and they picked up on that immediately. What I like is that Dr Yeap introduced to me the floss threader to clean my upper front teeth which are bound together by another dentist and cannot be cleaned by regular floss. She was concerned I may lose my teeth if I do not floss correctly. Other dentists didn't tell me about this floss threader. I really appreciate her so much. Two previous dentists put fear on me by telling me the possibility of infection of my broken tooth to the head and or to the jaw if I do not take it out and get a bridge, a denture, or an implant. After more than a half year since July 2023, there has not been an infection! Praise God! Dr. Man and Dr. Yeap recommended the removal of my broken tooth but didn't scare me of any major infection like other two dentists. Yet, it was painful for the anesthesia shots of my whole gum for a deep cleaning but I bore with it. I prayed, thought, and cried: God, please help me! The environment is clean and comfortable. One doctor claimed I had 7 cavities, which my own dentist never mentioned just a few months ago. The worst part? While I was lying on the chair numbed, the front desk walked in to charge me right there. Felt very unprofessional and pushy. The actual extraction by the lead doctor was fine, but the overall process felt more like a money-making routine than genuine patient care. My daughter was referred to Abari Orthodontics for an oral surgery consultation regarding the…read moreextraction of my 8-year-old daughter's severely decayed permanent molar (#14). Before we could even be seen by the oral surgeon, I was told that she needed an orthodontic consultation first. As expected, because my daughter is only 8 years old and still has many primary teeth, we were told she was not a candidate for orthodontic treatment at this time. We then had to schedule yet another appointment to finally see the oral surgeon--the very reason we were referred to the office in the first place. During the oral surgery consultation, the doctor agreed that the tooth needed to be extracted but recommended a bone graft that was not covered by insurance. When I asked whether the extraction could be performed without the bone graft, I was told by the treatment coordinator that the doctor would not perform the extraction unless the bone graft was also completed. As a parent, I wanted to understand the specific clinical reason for that decision. I requested written documentation explaining why the bone graft was necessary in my daughter's case and why treatment would be denied without it. Instead, I was provided with paperwork recommending a second opinion, which did not answer the questions I had asked. My concern is not that a bone graft was recommended. My concern is that I was unable to obtain a clear explanation of the clinical findings supporting the recommendation or the reason extraction alone was not considered an option. When parents are being asked to approve a procedure that is not covered by insurance and comes with a significant out-of-pocket cost, they deserve a clear and detailed explanation. Having worked in the dental field myself, I understand how insurance reimbursement and contracted fee schedules work. In some cases, additional procedures that are not covered by insurance can create significant out-of-pocket expenses for families, particularly when patients have state-provided insurance or plans that reimburse at contracted rates (HMO). While I cannot speak to the intentions of this office, the situation raised concerns for me because the recommended treatment involved an additional non-covered expense, yet I was unable to obtain a clear explanation of why it was required before the extraction could be performed. Parents should be aware of this and feel comfortable asking detailed questions whenever additional out-of-pocket procedures are recommended. I encourage other parents to ask questions, request copies of radiographs, seek second opinions when appropriate, and make sure they fully understand the rationale behind any recommended treatment before proceeding.
