The marina at Roche Harbor Resort isn't cheap (but interestingly, it's about the same to moor here at it is to moor at the much humbler marina at nearby Deer Harbor), but they pack the experience with so much value that it is actually a 'must visit' stop for the discriminating yachtsman. THE ROSES: Oh my, where to start? The staff (which will cheerfully help you dock and leave) are young, friendly, efficient, and - god help me - very easy on the eyes. I get a feeling working here is a very desirable summer gig, because they seem to be able to hire the 'cream of the crop' of the local (?) youth. The physical plant (docks, power, water, onshore amenities) are in perfect working order and impeccably clean. What really puts RHM over the top is all the little extras. Want to do some grilling dockside? They will deliver a top-quality (Saber) gas grill to your slip on request. Complimentary pump outs (via the 'Phecal Phreak' Pumpout service) are also available on request. Visiting yachtsmen receive on arrival a lovely 'welcome packet' which includes vouchers to a complimentary wine reception, and a punchcard that gives you a free RHM hat if you visit four of the onshore stores. The marina has a fairly well-stocked grocery store, wine merchant, multiple clothing and gift shops, and both casual and fine dining options. There is also a boatyard/marine mechanic (Phil Brooks), and a small marine chandlery. THE THORNS: None worth mentioning. THE VERDICT: Roche Harbor Marina is one of the - if not THE - premiere yachting destination in the Pacific Northwest. While not bargain travel, RHM delivers probably the most 'bang for the buck' of any marina in the region. Very highly recommend. read more

This is a really if a picture was a postcard marina. Its very very well maintained and clean. Theres plenty of space to walk, sit and theres even showers in the restrooms. We decided to dine at one of the local restaurants attached to the marina and it did not disappoint. read more

We've moored here many times over the years and love this place for the following reasons: --phekal freak has been entertaining us for over a decade--and it's a great service --lots of docking help--this place can be windy, so help with lines is always appreciated --great docks, showers and fuel services --cute but expensive grocery store --great gathering places for dock parties, complete with shade and grills --awesome eye for safety with fire extinguishers and ladders everywhere The one unawesome thing? Massive wooden cleats that are hard to work and oddly spaced. Some are broken and basically useless. That's a valid concern but it's the only one I have about this wonderful marina. read more

And nested with restaurants and little gift shops and interesting buildings and lots of history. With you're interested in sailing flying we're just eating good food and enjoying a day by the bay this is the place to come. My wife and I came into Roche Harbor to avoid some weather for three days. This is an upscale operation all around. From the friendly and hard working dock hands and staff to the restaurants and store. The atmosphere is no coincidence. This place has been structured and supervised with you in mind. The Lime Kiln Cafe had good food at comparable resort prices. McMillans restaurant was fabulous, prime rib, and Dungeness crab bisque exceptional as well as Bernard our waiter. What happened to this place? Been coming here for years and always felt special. The welcoming committed could only be described as worthless and rude. Our travel mates had a mechanical issue and called ahead several times to be sure help would be at the dock. Nope. Not only that, they tried to stuff them in an impossible place for a boat with fouled steering. Judging by the commonality of the incompetence, this is clearly a reflection of management. Staying here with my family on our boat around the early 2000s when I was growing up was a different kind of boating adventure. There wasn't a beach to explore, so that left activities on the boat, exploring the dock, and exploring the surroundings. I really enjoyed water activities and the beach, so not having the beach I was a little concerned about if I would enjoy the place. I was pleasantly surprised as the marina had different offerings and adventuring opportunities nearby that gave it its own feel. Each night they would have a horn play revelry, making it feel homey and bringing all of us in the marina in to a welcoming of the night. Near the marina there's an old hotel and restaurant. A little bit farther, but not too far away we also explored the McMillin Mausoleum and the old Lime Kiln plant. The plant is not located at the State Park, but was fun to visit. They had informational placards up so we got to learn a little about the history of the plant. Visiting the remains of the factory was that defining moment where I knew I loved technology and manufacturing (and factories) and making things and wanted to pursue it long-term. And I have and continue to pursue it to this day. Overall I enjoyed staying at Roche Harbor Marina. We got the boating activities experience as well as a more historic perspective by exploring some of the nearby sites. A good location to get a feel for what life used to be like and is like on the Northern portion of San Juan Island. read more

This is an up scale marina and tons of amenities. There are a handful restaurants as well as other sightseeing opportunities. A near by outdoor sculpture park is a great place to visit for all ages. Most boat slips have nice views and works are very friendly. We would definitely come back again. read more

If there ever was a marina to earn five stars - this is it. It's the most lovely marina I've ever been too. From the moment you arrive in Roche they have extremely knowledgeable dock hands to meet you who are professional and well mannered. You can put your boat on the list to be visited by the Pheakle Phreak who will pump your holding tank for free. The marina has lots going on with a sea plane landing strip, kayaks and boards that can be rented. They also have a lovely grocery store that has all sorts of food and at reasonable prices. They have nice showers, a mini post office, lovely gardens and shops on the water and two restaurants right there. Honestly it's a beautiful marina and a great area with expert staff, what more could you ask for? read more

For my 700th review, I bring you the shining star of San Juan marinas, Roche Harbor! I've been mooring here, each Labor Day weekend for the past 4 years and it's always a party. Packed with big ones, little ones, older and younger but everyone gets along and rings out the season with a bang. First, the staff is tops. Professional and courteous these people know their stuff. Always there to help you tie off and more than patient with noobies (not us of course) pulling in with a stiff breeze or setting out for the territory ahead. Great marina facilities too. There's a market which is surprisingly well stocked with maybe not exactly what you're looking for but certainly what you can get by with. Food, beer, wine and some hardware all in a cute and convenient location at the end of the dock. Two sets of shower areas offer a welcomed option to most of the shower/heads on the boats. Here a secret that I don't really want to share. Go on the opposite side of the building from the shower and laundry facilities to find a few, private room showers. The cost is maybe $0.25 more but it's well worth it. Plenty of room to move around and get ready for your day. Pump out service from the Phecal Phreak. When it's available boat side, I always say yes. Fuel, sure but can be a little tricky with vessels over 35ft. There's a tight turn at the end of the docks that's doable but maybe not for your first time aboard a charter. Multiple restaurant and a bar, live music and dancing. A spa at the hotel offers manis and pedis, massages, facials and more. The best part is with a service, you can use the showers and steam room. Make a morning out of it and feel refreshed before the nights festivities. Feeling adventurous? Hiking is abundant along with kayak and stand up paddle board rentals. Why Labor Day? It's the end of the season, right? You bet ya and their season blow out is not to be missed. Colors every night, May through September followed by hundreds of horns saluting and for the finally, the staff jump from the dock, into the cold and murky waters on the very last day. Better them and not me. This is not to be missed but make reservations early as they fill up (3 night minimum). Having visited more than some and less than others, this marina is my favorite over all. Sure there are quiet and secluded docks in Desolation Sound and even more beautiful backdrops like the Fairmont Empress in Victoria but if you're looking for an all around, good deal with great people and plenty to keep you busy off the docks, this is it. I have to say the coolest most "yachty@ marina in the San Yuan islands ( that is what our captain called it-- I didn't get it until we pulled in and saw all the monster yachts!)The experience was excellent, people super nice and the fun exciting atmosphere was awesome. You have to see some of the boats that were hanging out there--wow! If I could figure out how to post the videos without sound. Boat in if you can do you can hang out in the marina, just look at all the cool boats. Also the turn of the century feel of the resort makes you feel like you are in the movie " Somewhere In Time". We just spent the weekend in Roche Harbor. We arrived by boat and our kids along with our 2 year old grandson joined us via ferry from Anacortes. It was a wonderful weekend and part of that was due to the hospitality we experienced at the marina. First of April is a time when most resort destinations are just waking up. Not Roche Harbor. They are up to full speed and on their game. Special shout out to Tony on the marina staff. We had requested to have our holding tank pumped. His schedule happens to coincide with our little swabs nap time. Tony took great effort in making sure he completed the task with out waking up the little guy. This is no easy feat! He always seemed to be available when we needed something but invisible when you didn't. We enjoyed our stay and you will too. read more

We first came into Roche Harbor Marina 9 years ago on an 18 foot boat. We were so intimidated, thinking it was the millionaires club, that we turned around and went elsewhere. I wish I would have known then what I know now. Roche Harbor Marina is AMAZING!!! They don't care what boat you have or even if you have a boat. They are nice to everybody! So, here we are 9 years later on the 4th of July. The busiest day of the year. Michael went way out of his way for us! Treated us so kindly. He didn't know that we were now on an 80 ft yacht. Roche Harbor has it figured out! The service is top notch. This is one place you get what you pay for. I know this sounds silly but the thing I am most thrilled about here is garbage and recycling on the guest docks. If you are not a boater you wouldn't get it. There is nothing more annoying than hauling your garbage up to the parking lot when all the dock carts are up by the garbage in the first place. The harbor master is always quick to respond via VHF and always sends someone to catch your lines. A different person comes around later to collect. I'm sure the harbor master has a nice office but I have never been there. Water. How many times have you been told "Please don't wash your boat, we have a water shortage"? Not a Roche Harbor, wash away, let the kids play in the sprinklers, whatever. It is also nice to have a choice of restaurants, a post office, laundry, and a grocery store all at the top of the ramp. I have not bought fuel here but the gas dock is always attended. They also come to you to pump you out and do not charge for it although tips are appreciated. My only complaint is the old showers and bathroom. I say old because they have been the same for the past 30 or 40 (or more) years. I remember them as a kid when there was only what is now the guest dock and about 100 buoys in the harbor. This does not make them charming. I know there are new showers on the other side of the building but you have to walk by the doughnuts twice to get there and that adds at least 500 calories to a shower. Like the other reviewer it amazes me that there are not more reviews. Perhaps Active Captain is loaded with them. I like to leave reviews when a business goes above and beyond. read more

What a great marina! Top notch service from the staff at the fuel dick and check in. We had a reservation and they place us in permanent moorage. Our slip neighbor Bob on E dock was so nice & friendly. The marina bathroom/showers were the nicest we came across in the SJI. Clean, compact, pretty black and white tile. The harbor is cozy (meaning tiny). There's only one restaurant/bar. Thank goodness it's good! . At dusk they do a flag ceremony. It was a little cheesy for our taste (piped-in, blaring recorded trumpets) but it sure got a crowd. Walking around the lime kiln artifacts were more our speed. The gardens I from of Hotel de Haro were beautiful. A quiet, protected harbor, we had an amazing night of sleep! read more

This marina has effective staff, lots of available waste and recycling receptacles, and a high tolerance for drinking all night and day long. As long as you keep it on the pier or in one of the restaurants then you're good. Public showers available in the Lime Kiln dock building for 6 quarters ($150). (there are reviews for Roche Harbor Resort, which is run by the same company as the marina, but a marina is not the same as a hotel) Roche Harbor Marina feels like the poshest marina in the San Juans - it's the nicest marina I've ever been to (of about 6, so you can take that with a grain of salt). You do pay for this luxury - it's the most expensive marina I've ever stayed at too. (But, in comparison it's not as bad as the difference between a 4-star and 3-star hotel - $60/night for our boat's size vs $50/night at a different marina is nothing like hotel rates $200 vs $150). The waterfront restaurant is beautiful, and walking around the marina is a spectacular tour of boats far richer than I can afford. It was fun to get a glimpse into the lives of the mega rich for a moment (about as long as I could handle). They play taps at sunset - I'm sure it gets cheesy and repetitive for people staying there a long time, but I thought it added character. In the morning a dock girl came around to collect payment - felt strange to be pampered and not need to walk up to a marina office! There's also a grocery / convenience store on shore which has an excellent selection of boater needs - including a very good beer selection. The only complaint is the showers - the ones on the far side of the laundry room were supposed to be the good ones according to a very helpful dock hand, but the two we tried didn't function. A trickle of cold water came out after putting the $1.50 in quarters in. We heard later the coin trays get jammed and you have to forcefully yank them out to activate the shower. I had tried yanking out the coin tray in one of the stalls and it still hadn't worked. Overall though, I'd definitely stay in Roche Harbor again. read more

This weekend was our first visit. Having been a boat owner for such a short time, I was amazed at the level of service from the moment I radioed. There was staff at my slip to help me tie up. There was a mobile pump-out included in the price of moorage. I could also empty my garbage and recycling in containers on the dock, rather than walk off the dock. CANADIANS ON SMALL BOATS BEWARE Arrived at Roche Harbor Customs dock on our small (22ft) (8HP) sailboat only to be turned away by a CBP Officer (actually Port Director) as we didn't have a "bill of sale" for the boat. I've visited Roche Hbr several times over the years and my Passport and Hull ID # were all that was needed. I've owned the boat for 26 yrs. Asked if I could have a family member etransfer a document from my boatfile (a 2015 Insurance survey) and was told "anyone can do a survey. Go back to Canada". Really?....This Marina is awesome as are the San Juan Islanders but if you are arriving on a small boat (less than 10HP - unregistered) from Canada BEWARE of changing Customs requirements and confrontational agents. read more

I am with Medecins Sans Frontieres and any time I call they welcome me with not only open arms but they make my stay VERY AFFORDABLE! This time they gave me two of their best rooms and supported my safe stay with a most affordable price. I just want to say that they are so kind to me every time I call and make it happen. This time it was very special as I had just been on "THE MERCY" for 2 1/2 months. It is very important that when I get a moment that I know that I am safe and protocol is followed! They are so on their game and the entire staff were so very kind. Now, the food and service......beyond great. The prime rib of course is to die for but I had the scallops as well and melt in your mouth wonderful! Can we talk about key lime pie......not something I would order but when Isabella said try it I saw the twinkle in her eye and WOW was she right. You have to try it. The special part of the dining experience was the first night I got there late, but Isabella pulled something out of her private collection and boom the best. The next night I had her mom and it runs in the family. She gave me a slice of THE BEST PRIME RIB..... and she pack up my buttered bread and added all kinds of goodies, creamy horseradish, raw horseradish, extra butter and she packaged it in individual containers as to not have it all a mess. Big Hugs to her!!!! And her son was so very kind to us as well! What a family.....they made my stay soooooooo special! Thanks guy's! The front desk staff were just the best! they are on their game and so pleasant! Hugs to you guys in the most difficult time. You do your job so well Thank-you! And my favorite guy in reservations that never lets me down. I call and he makes it all happen. In better time, I want to just give you a big hug! Now I know you all are a little nervous about traveling in these challenging times but I asure you, this is my safe place to retreat and to support us on the frontlines is so special. I am so disappointed with the zero grass for dogs at this marina. To appear to be so accommodating & yet so thoughtless yo our f4 legged family members. The only place for dogs to go is all dried up dirty straw for grass. Shame on Roche for not having a doggie yard. read more
