Beautiful, clean marina in charming, historic Friday Harbor. We were here on the off season and had easy moorage. This place is well lit at night and feels very safe. The showers were great (and clean). I used an app to pay for my 7 minute shower (I timed myself at 3 minutes, including shampoo and conditioner). We'll be back as we grow our sea legs. read more

Very good boatyard and marine service facility in the San Juans. THE ROSES: Very courteous staff. They come out when they say they will. Our mechanic was well-trained, professional, and was able to winkle out the problem with our engine in good time. They do the work you need, and don't try to 'gild the lily' or pad their labor time. THE THORNS: Hourly rate is steepish, but I suspect it's in line with what comparable yards are charging. Most importantly, they DO make the most of each hour they charge for, so you are getting good value for money. THE VERDICT: Considering that there's probably not that much competition here, they really have the opportunity to take advantage of people if they wanted to. The point is they don't! These guys are straight shooters, and you can have them work on your boat with confidence. Highly recommend. read more

This review is strictly for Popeye, the female harbor seal. Had some time to kill before our ferry back to seattle and strolled the marina and to my surprise came across Popeye! Apparently it's against the law to feed marine animals, but there's a kind lady who sells frozen fish to feed her. Bought her couple bags, she waved and we were on our way. Right before spotting Popeye, came from the alpaca farm... so needless to say, my day was pretty great. read more

I highly recommend Friday Harbor Marine. We just returned from San Juan Island and the people at Friday Harbor Marine helped us with our kayak rentals. We were staying at a waterfront property and they delivered the kayaks to our house, including life-vests, dry bags, etc., and took the time to walk us through how all the equipment worked. Everyone that helped us was incredibly helpful and thoughtful. We have 3 young children and they made sure the kids were safely fitted. Their pricing and policies are fair, but most of all, they seem to really care about their customers having a fun and safe experience. I would definitely use them again the next time we are lucky enough to stay on the island. Thank you! read more

Kudos to Gary and Ludie. This review is a little late, but bottom line is that we broke down at anchor in Friday Harbor last summer on the eve of our departure (ancient Lucas starter relay caught fire on my 1982 Perkins). Called Ludie at the office who was very helpful. Gary then came out in his boat, examined the situation (after work hours), then returned with an alternative/modern relay the next morning. Rewired us up, provided a spare and we were on our way right on schedule. Can't thank them enough. Price: $120 an hour for labor. Total price: $350. Very reasonable in my opinion. Bottom Line: VERY HIGHLY recommended company. Helpful, knowledgeable, timely and fair. Who could ask for more. BZ. read more

We came up to Roche Harbor on our boat for a few days. As we got into the harbor our starboard engine died and wouldn't start. We called around to boat mechanics and as it is summer everyone was busy. We called Gary at Friday Harbor marine and he got right back to us and came out the next morning. He quickly diagnosed the problem, had the part and got our engine running. He was professional and very nice to work with. read more

What an awesome experience. We rented the Maxum for a 24 hour trip to cruise the islands around San Juan. The service was impeccable from start to finish. Any questions we had or small issues that arose the team was very quick to respond and knowledgable. Theo(the front man we worked with) gave tons of information and insiders advice on where to go and what to do. Like all the other reviews of these folks (at least those that realize this is a boat repair business, not a kayak rental shop or the marina), I'm a completely satisfied customer. Tony got out to my boat to fix a Honda outboard the same day I called, worked the problem, figured out the multiple root causes of it, and fixed them completely - the motor runs like new again. And the final cost was completely in line with what I would have paid for similar service in Seattle. read more

We were having head problems and left a message on Saturday. Got a call back almost right away with an appt for Monday Sept 21. Rented kayaks for a couple of hours. They have Hobie kayaks with a pedal drive. They're cute, but fragile. A steering cable got caught in weeds and came off the rudder. We made do by steering with the paddle, but kayaking without a rudder was a little frustrating. When we came back, owner was aggressive and belilgerent. Owner tried to charge us for a broken rudder - though this would take less than 20 minutes to fix. Maybe this is a good way to offset the maintenance cost for their cheap plastic boats - but not a way to do business. BE CAREFUL with these guys. The money you save on their cheap rental rates will be more than eaten up when they try to abuse their "you break it you buy it" policy. Oh, and checking in was kind of a joke. Teenager acted like a high school wannabe stoner while she went through the mandatory shipping lane charts. This is important stuff - deserves better attention. Kayaking around Friday Harbor is wonderful. Spend the extra 10 bucks on a more honest outfitter. read more

Boat Repair. I called regarding an electrical problem on a Tuesday afternoon. They said they would get back to me regarding scheduling; they didn't. I called Wednesday morning and they said again that they would get back to me; they didn't. I Called again at noon - same response but again no action. Finally went over there to find out what I could expect. They still wouldn't tell me and seemed to take offense that I wasn't satisfied with their earlier non-answers. I walked out in the middle of their lecture. They clearly did not need my business. These people must make their living off transient boaters who think they have no choice but to tolerate such treatment. There is an alternative - Foote Mobile Marine Service (360-370-5688). He does good work, plus you get a sense that he appreciates your business. read more

As new residents of Friday Harbor, and very satisfied patrons of Friday Harbor Marine, we wanted to spread the word of the excellent service we received from Mike Close and Gary Westby! We purchased a used boat from Mike and had Mike go through the boat - stem to stern! This included a new long block engine with all new equipment. Unfortunately and beyond the control of Mike and Gary, the engine rebuilder, an outside source, failed to provide a good product. The engine failed within the first ten hours of use! No worries however for us! Mike carried the warranty as promised and Gary installed the new long block, completed a sea trial and delivered our boat back to us as good as new-in fact even better! All of this done, no questions asked and provided as promised under warranty! Mike and Gary have done more than this for us and we are grateful to know them and recommend them without reservation for all your boating needs! read more

I have never been treated in the utterly outrageous manner in which the owner of this place treated me. Loved being out on the water, enjoyed the kayak, but these people need to figure out better ways of treating their patrons. When something breaks on a kayak, don't assume it was someone's fault. Wear and tear, my friend. Do I pay for oil changes on rental cars? No, because it's a rental. Don't yell at me because I didn't call you or didn't come back to the dock when the rudder broke. That was my choice and I paid you for the use of your kayak. I am not going to pay you for upkeep. That's your job. Things break, get used to it and stop yelling at your customers. read more

We just finished fixing a very tricky problem with the Vacuflush system on my boat. The service manager got the privilege of this job himself. The failure was unusual and very difficult to track down. We got the job done and were charged a fair price. We are already talking about future projects to have done by Friday Harbor Marine's service department. read more
