My son and I ate at Rob's last night. He ordered a beer, she asked for ID and he gave her his drivers license. After walking to the door to see if she could get more light on it, then saying she needed to get some glasses to read it while walking back to the kitchen. Came back out and said she could not read the birth date so she couldn't serve him. I looked and it is clearly visible so I asked to see the manager. We ordered our food, were just about done eating and asked again to see the manager. Waitress proceeded to tell me that the manager would not come out. I ate here last night with my husband and son. The food was delicious and our sever was so sweet. She was a young girl who was serving us and three other tables alone. She was also answering phone calls and taking care of walk-in orders. I was impressed with her keeping a positive, professional attitude despite all she was handling! I think the manager, some older woman, was there and she was absolutely rude to the server. She berated her in front of everyone in the dining room because she put in an order for a food item they didn't have, despite it being on the special's menu. I felt horrible for the girl. That was extremely unprofessional of the manager. I will return for the food and the service, but hope the manager doesn't do anything like that anymore! read more

Well, I'm sad to say, but I'm going to have to drop 2 stars for Rob's barbecue. For the most part, the food is still the same and the staff are great. However, the new owner has changed the atmosphere of the facility and it is definitely not the same. I don't care much to see cases of candy sitting out on the counter for sale that was bought at a large box store. All of the neon alcohol signs are also a turn off for me. Had dinner last evening and wasn't impressed. Ordered the chopped steak with mashed potatoes and green beans. The chopped steak was cooked how I ordered it. The gravy was definitely out of a can or mix. The mashed potatoes were probably instant and the green beans were seasoned with sugar, yuck. Went to Robs Pit BBQ for lunch today. Prices were very steep for lunch! We had a brisket sandwich with fries and a small 1/2 rack of baby back ribs with deep fried mushrooms. We also had 2 glasses of sweet tea and the price was over $50 before tip! Food was okay but not for the price! We will not be going back! Also when we got there at 10:50 am the doors were locked. I know why its grumpy...eating the food makes you grumpy.t really tried to give it 2 stars...i just could not... we walked in there was only two others peple there...no employees..after a short while latterone appeared. My husband had the king with cole slaw and hush puppies and i had the grumpy with fried pickles and sweet corn bits..we got the free dessert..as she said a cinnomon roll type of thing. The fried pickles were ok, the sweet corn bits..not bad after that it went down hill fast, like a steam roller. My husbandd meat was dry and fatty..the cole slaw was so bad i had to spit it out..the hush puppieswere over done and dry..there was barely enough pork meat to cover the small bun , dry..yes the bbq is watery..all on all bad. My family and I traveled all the way from North Carolina to spend the weekend with family. We spent our first night of dinner here at Grumpys only to be disappointed by the service. The two young ladies on Friday night was rude and very unprofessional. After a long trip we came for a good hot meal. While in town visiting friends, we decided to check this place out. It looks new- clean interior and exterior, and some undone construction by the parking lot here and there. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by a nice waitress, who took down our order to go. We got out food in 15 min (from the time we placed it). So perhaps the other reviewer went on a bad day? I don't usually like brisket since they tend to overdry, where i've had them before. But this was good. They also gave ton of meat, so i pulled some to enjoy off the sandwich. I'd get this again. The sauces: original grumpy, hot, and sweet. we got original and sweet. The sweet was my choice- it went well with the brisket. The original sauce is too watery and vinegary for my taste. But BBQ being as subjective as one's favorite color, everybody wins with sauce variety. As sides, we ordered Sweet potato waffle fries, regular fries, and Onion rings. The onions rings are good, the fries are average, sweet potato fries were good, but I think they meant to give me ranch dressing (the best way to have Sweet Pot. fries!), but instead included whipped honey butter with it. I received 2 whole catfish that both fit on an 8 inch dinner plate with the 2 sides on the plate as well. By the time I deboned the fish there was only 4 forks of meat from one fish and 3 forks from the other. The menu stated "Farm Raised Catfish..hahaha" farm raised in a bucket maybe. I ordered take-out one fateful night... and this is my review. The Order: I ordered a family four-pack for the lady-friend and I so that we could eat and have leftovers. We got the brisket, onion rings, and hush-puppies. Right off the menu, nothing weird. Should be easy, right? The Ordering Process: Wrong. I placed my order for the Family of Four order of brisket and sides. Except, they never asked me what sides I wanted. Since I was staring at the menu when I was ordering, I asked what I got. The person taking my order didn't know I got sides with my order. He had to ask someone else. Pathetic. But I did get my order placed correctly. Getting My Order: If you order take-out, beware. There is no one around to actually talk to you. The sign said "Please seat yourself," so I did. The third person who worked there finally got around to talking to me. Finally, she got me my order after a few boring minutes of being there. Getting There: I have to say that this place is located in one of the most inconveniently located spots in Southern Illinois. It's on an access road off 13 with small, barely visible roads leading to it. I know the area and I had to look at a map multiple times and program a GPS to figure out how to get there. Food: The food was surprisingly awful. The brisket can best be described as "brittle." It was softish and tender, but stiff and only broke apart in specific spots corresponding to the grain of the meat; it was chewy if you didn't chew it correctly. And it had relatively little flavor. The onion rings were mediocre. Fine, but nothing special. The hush-puppies were offensively bland and boring. They were all an over-fried dough with exactly zero flavor. I can only imagine that it was the flavor of fried flower. Not even sauces could overwhelm the taste of this disgust. Portions: The portions are the only reason I'm not giving this place a 1-star rating. For what I ordered, I got a crap-ton of food. The "pints" of sides where ridiculously large-sized and a very pleasant surprise. I got two large containers of onion rings, which was great. We visited on a Sunday afternoon. The restaurant is located on the southside of Highway 13 near the Marion Airport. The restaurant is decent size (probably 15-20 tables) with a mixture of booths and tables. There was a sign in front that said "seat yourself" so we did. Our orders were taken within five minutes. The waitress was nice enough. Our food came out within 10-15 minutes. We ordered the slice grumpy (sliced pork on bun), a fish sandwich, cole slaw, grumpy's taters, and the hashbrown casserole. The food was okay. The fish sandwich was better than the "grumpy". The restaurant is getting two stars for their lack of service. Once we were served our food we never saw the waitress again. The restaurant was not full or even busy. There were possibly four other tables there. There were four servers on. The three other servers passed by our table and did not ask if we needed anything. We really like the smoked wings. We get them with sauce on the side because the sauce covers up the great smokey flavor. Saturday night is ribeye steak and prime rib night. My husband likes them both. Since I am compelled to get the smoked wings everytime, I have missed out on the steaks. Getting a late lunch around 3 o'clock it was nice to see that they were open. There was only one other customer we had great service from the very personable waitress. I got the catfish nugget dinner and originally I thought that doesn't look like very much food but it ended up being very satisfying meal. I got okra and the green beans as my sides. The green beans were very flavorful with lots of bacon although it was hard to eat without a spoon as there was lots of liquid. I ended up using my hush puppies to soak up all the delicious juice. First time at Grumpy's. Showed up at about an hour before closing. Ordered Grumpy's sampler for an appetizer, The King with no bun and sweet potato waffle fries and half a smoked chicken With baked beans and a baked potato. The wings on the sampler platter were rubbery like they were microwaved. The pork egg roll had corn starch caked all over it still. Mozzarella sticks were typical frozen pre packaged sticks and the loaded fries were good. The king which is brisket seem to have been deep fried to reheat evident by the big chunk of deep fried garbage that was in with the brisket. Flavor was good but really greasy. Sweet potato fries were over cooked. The smoked chicken had good flavor but dry and was missing a thy, had the leg, but no thy. The baked potato was gray in the inside and was tough, not under cooked but tough. Baked beans left a film in my mouth. May try it another time in the future but not anytime soon. read more
