Really nice staff but keys for $2.25-2.50 each? Come on! I understand that a lot of local stores cannot compete with big stores without raising their prices, but everything in this store is $2-3 more than it should be. I got keys made without checking the cost because I've never seen them for more than $1.20 anywhere (including small non-chain stores). I ended up paying $30 for house keys. Lame. read more

Robert's is great! Not only do they have at least one of essentially anything you could need for home projects magically crammed into that small store, the staff is super friendly and knowledgeable, and will do what they can to help you out. They are ridiculously quick at cutting keys - you can just walk in and they do it while you watch instead of telling you to come back in an hour like some places. They have a great paint selection and are also really speedy about mixing colors up for you. read more

Roberts Hardware rocks! All the guys seem helpful, knowledgeable, and go OUT OF THEIR WAY to help you. For example, hinge on my cabinet door broken...they don't have part but there is a cabinet/hinge specialty store on 6th/Bryant. Need to fix my wooden storage shelves in my garage since I backed up my car in it...they have the light metal brackets I needed. I've been to Home Depot and looked for help for 20 minutes many times and then would get someone who didn't know what I was talking about. And Home Depot's incompetent sales reps sold me blinds that were over $1,000 and I had to throw away after 2 years because they 1)make a loud noise anytime wind blows (hello! it's a window!) and 2)are made of a material that turn moldy! Great little hardware store. Prices are decent and the staff are very helpful. I came in one day ready to buy materials to do a project and after talking to the staff left empty handed with the advice that I was wasting my money and it was unnecessary. I was mid project and ran out of polyurethane...this was the 3rd hardware store I went to looking for the right product. Everyone else just told me they didn't have it and looked down their noses (I wasn't exactly well dressed, a hot mess to be honest, I was mid-project!). Extremely helpful, personable employees. I went in looking for wood and wood is what I received! Stan went out of his way to help me with the design and give me ideas of what I could do with the model (I was making a scaled down park bench). I went to get paint. I asked for a contractor discount like I do at every Benjamin Moore Rep and the guy at the cash register asked if I was talking to him. I was not talking to anyone in the line and who else would I be asking for the contractor discount? He rang me up at regular price . When I asked if it included the discount he said "you heard me ask if you were talking to me". Wow I assume he was trying to wield any power he could to make up for his lack of a higher paying job at his age. Times are tough but why you got to be so bitter? I will be going to 24th street house of color from now on. read more

The staff blew me off, Then promptly served the real estate guy whom pushed in front of me to purchase locks. The staff quickly bordered on disrespectful. I will never go there again. I've lived in SF for ten years and never had a complaint about this place. The staff is always helpful and kind and they're a great, well-stocked neighborhood hardware store. But a couple of weeks ago, I was headed overseas for 6 months and asked them to make duplicates of all my keys, including a mailbox key, for my tenant. They messed up the duplicate for the mailbox, which I only found out when I heard from my tenant that she couldn't open the mailbox and neither could the two friends who had copies of the key. Currently, my friends are frantically running around trying to get the lock replaced, it's holiday season so they are all doing this while juggling their own plans, and I'm kicking myself for not checking the duplicates before leaving. It's horrible being a continent and an ocean away and figuring out how to get a lock changed in San Francisco. I've never had a problem with duplicates when I got them made by Express Mail on Haight and Masonic. I wish I'd read reviews before going to Roberts' Hardware, because I'm not the first reviewer who has had this problem--they've messed up duplicates before. DO NOT GO TO THEM TO GET DUPLICATE KEYS MADE! read more

I would recommend avoiding this hardware store. Staff is rude, especially older man at front cash register. Keys are $1.25 - $2.00/ea MORE than Fredrickson's and Cole hardware. I'd rather spend my money at a local hardware store that doesnt price-gouge it's consumers! read more

I was so impressed with the professionalism and customer support that I wanted to give Bruce a shout out. He's one of the owners (one of Robert's sons) and was incredibly friendly and helpful. I was looking for color samples and he spent about 1.5 hours with me, helping me choose colors. He even went so far as to cut some large pieces of wood and actually painted the samples on the wood himself and then spend another 20 minutes blowing them dry for me, since they didn't have large sheet samples for colors that I was interested in. All this work for the cost of the paint samples ($8)! I never felt rushed and all of his suggestions were very useful. I still can't believe the level of customer service! read more

The people at this store are absolutely wonderful! I stopped in here to use the restroom while visiting San Francisco from Sacramento, and I accidentally left behind a shopping bag with a newly purchased dress in it. It didn't occur to me until a month later that Roberts Hardware might have been where I left my missing dress, and when I called them they still had it for me! I drove to San Francisco to pick it up. i came here because i had a mouse in my house and i wanted a humane trap and the guy who worked here was pretty much the most ingenious man in the face of the planet. he knew every problem in my house before i even had to tell him. he showed me a few different humane traps and taught me how to pack steel wool into the hole in my wall to prevent mice from coming in from there. he was essentially my own personal bob vila and for that i am eternally grateful. read more
