The onion burger with cheese was damn good with pickles, a little mustard, and a splotch of ketchup, but I skipped the lettuce and tomato as it looked a bit sketchy. The tater tots were perfectly cooked though. This place has been here since dinosaurs walked the earth, and it looks like it. There are maybe a half dozen worn stools at the counter for customers to sit on, and not much space beyond that. It's smoky and a film of greasy air hangs in the room, so be prepared. But if you like the smell of charred burgers and onions, and their taste, you'll like this place just fine! read more

Being in the area for work, I decided to try the Oklahoma onion burger. The place is very small, but has counter seats that faced directly at the grill. You can watch your burger constructed right in front of you. The staff is super friendly and welcoming, the place while not much to look at outside, is very clean and inviting on the inside. I absolutely love, onions and hamburger, so this was the perfect combination. There's a reason why this place has been open since 1926. And if they keep doing as well as they did today, they'll be here in 2126. read more

While not the largest spot it's definitely one of the best. You get a front row seat to the grill and get to watch the chefs do their thing! Very good food with the classic diner options. I promise you won't go wrong with any choice at all. A place with that small town feel with great flavor in every bite. We came for onion burgers and fries. We were not disappointed. Robert's has been here in this tiny Shack for years! The food never disappoints. I had the pleasure of watching while they cooked. One girl cooked the burgers, and the other girl did fries and sacking. There was a guy there, but since I was the only customer, he was on standby. Great service! The place looks just like I remember it 35 years ago. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Charming hole-in-the-wall ambiance. There are a few other things on the menu, but it's a very limited menu. I'll be back soon for more greasy goodness! The burgers were cooked to perfection, the fries were so greasy they had to be wrapped to save the bag. We WANT it that way. Sadly they can't be given a higher rating than five. This place reminds me of White Grill in Nevada, Missouri which I assure you is a huge compliment. Small hole in the wall place with limited seating but everything you want in a greasy spoon burger joint. Stopped here when Sid's was closed. Listen it was just okay! I didn't feel like their beef had much flavor. Not enough onions. Fries were good. Hotdog was good with their "relish"! This is a delicious onion burger, but also quite an experience. Clearly frequented by the locals, this tiny diner will forever be one of my favorite travel finds. Don't expect the service to be quick. They are small and swamped with customers. What you should expect is a flavorful burger with just the right amount of onions. Onion burger was WOW, delicious. Served hot off the well-seasoned grill, begins as a bare-handed grab of beef, smashed flat with a spatula then topped with a mountain of grilled onions. Less charred or burnt blackness than Sid's, more juicy, melt-in-your-mouth, buttery, greasy spoon goodness. I keep it simple, double meat and cheese, just add pickles, mustard, maybe some mayo. Coneys here are just as good. Robert's has the best hot dog slaw in town. Yes, even better than the "slaw" they brag about up the road. A true slaw slaw here, while Sid's is really a sweet relish. Chili also homemade and very tasty. Fries long and thin, cooked till golden, like old school McDonald's. Opened in the 1920's but lacking any period charms (go to Sid's for that). Counter only dining makes for fast friends. Lack of space makes it difficult for groups. Service is pretty darn decent considering it's just a couple of teenagers running the place. Robert's is more of a locals joint than their touristy competitor. Has better prices too. Only one issue here and it's a doozy...Bring your hand sanitizer, because this place is not for the squeamish. Part dive, part dirt farm, part junkyark. They could definitely take better care of the place. I could elaborate but I won't. I'll leave that up to your vivid imaginations. One of the problems with being a "legend" and lasting 50 or more years, is......you've lasted 50 or more years, and you're damned tired, it's easy to rest on your reputation, and who can blame you for wanting to squeeze a few more bucks out of your place for your golden years? But I do like it when there are "two legends", across town, or down the street, and locals are passionate about one or the other being the best. Such is the case in my home town with "Deluxe Coney Island", and "Original Coney Island." (No question, Deluxe rules!). Such is the case in El Reno, OK, the "birthplace of the onion burger." In fact, if you find yourself on Route 66, in the spring of any year, El Reno is the place to be in May for Fried Onion Burger Day. I swear. A giant onion burger is cooked and served up to the curious, tourists, and locals alike. So what is a fried onion burger? Well, at Robert's Grill, around since before grills were invented, the cook takes a handful of fresh ground beef, slaps it on the flattop, and smashes is once with a spatula. Sprinkle a mess or raw white onions on top, and smash the crap out of it, so it's a thin patty, awash with onions, sizzling at a hot enough temp, that the edges are going to get crispy. And I like that. Let it cook for quite awhile, or at least until the blood is coming thru the top. Flip it once, so the onions are 'neath it, and place the bun on top to warm. Flip again, slab o'cheese=food. Counterman turns, asks "mayo or mustard." "Mustard," sez I." "Pickle?" sez he. "Aye" sez I. I splurged and ordered a side of tots. I paid ("make it an even $5," sez he,) and retired to my usual preferred dining spot on these outings, the trunk of my car. Small problem. Oklahoma, OK or not, has a serious fly problem. Has anyone pointed this out? There are hordes of flies everywhere I stopped (no, they were not following me), so al fresco dining (who's he?) was out of the question for the Robert's parking lot. I would have sped out of town, but I was on "E", so I packed my hamburg sandwich and tots and moved a block away to the gas station, planning to dine and gas, but the card readers on the pumps were taped over, so I had to go into the station twice. Gassed, but not yet gassy, I drove across the street to the parking lot of Johnnie's, another place in El Reno that was built by the Egyptians, after the finished the pyramids. I intended to do a side-by-side comparison, but after polishing off the Robert's onion burger, which pretty much tasted like a giant White Castle, but grilled, instead of steamed. I will admit tho, for being grocery store beef and buns, I did like Robert's version of the o-burger. Walking into Johnnie's, the only midday customer, I spied the menu board and out slipped, "two coneys to go, please." My eyes wandered right. $6.50 for two? WTF? Are you making the weenies here? They were ready in a sec, of course, the chili was meaty and sweet, like a bbq sauce, and the tiny diced onions were awash in a mustard/vinegar concoction. It was a sweet and sour dog, and I quickly soured on it. I thought that maybe the frank itself would have given the sandwiches some redemption, but scraping off the good, picking out the dog, and taking a bite, revealed nothing more than a standard 10/lb, "mixed meat" hot dog. Could have even been a poultry one. No knack, no flavor. The upside was I was happy I didn't order the burger, which no doubt would have been a frozen puck from Sam's Club. Oh, I know. Sids, Robert's and Johnnies were listed as the Big 3 in El Reno when I Googled the famous regional Fried Onion Burger. I had looked forward to any opportunity to go there and today, a Sunday, was the day. Sids, a snappy looking place with the highest rated burger, was closed. Robert's Grill, rated second, was supposedly open to 9 pm and we were running late so we went on to Robert's and went right in. In retrospect, now here on Yelp, I notice that there are very few recent reviews for Robert's and except for one 10 months ago; I don't see that they reflect our experience today. Robert's Grill appears to be resting on past laurels for his Fried Onion Burger. First, it was hard to get past the flies both living and dead. They were everywhere and lay dead on the windowsills and anywhere not recently cleaned. Not much looked recently cleaned either. It was 6:55 pm and they were closing in 5 minutes because it was Sunday, he told us; not at 9; but he really wanted to serve us even though we said we would "go to the other place." So we stayed. Then came a deluge of last minute customers. So second, this very sweet young man with only his subteen assistant tried to wrap things up for the day ASAP for multiple orders as the phone rang and he needed more food items and chaos ensued. Us, seeing a greasy counter, dirty floor, flies everywhere, got more agitated and so of course I made the mistake of going to this closet bathroom which turns out to be well, just repulsive. Third, even though my basic criteria are soap, paper towel and toilet paper; this is like an employees bathroom at an auto mechanic shop. Black. Wet. Ugh. End of saga, we got our order to go and left the small building with it's dirty outside walls, one bare bones picnic table on bare earth with a view of the dumpster and tried to find someplace to eat our burgers and tater tots. The unevenly cooked burgers with unevenly cut and cooked onions and smashed bun tops were just "okay" and the tater tots were overcooked and dry. The nice young man really had done what he could with very little help. The one patty Fried Onion Burgers were $3 and the tater tots $3. We had to ask for drink lids, ketchup (which he squirted in a cup), salt & pepper, and napkins. I wouldn't go back there. I wouldn't recommend you go there. Robert's Grill needs to clean and paint and do something to keep out the flies and get the nice young man some adequate help. read more

Yum! Robert's definitely lived up to the El Reno onion burger hype. The onion burgers are of course delicious, but you have to get something with the chili. The cook brought us some chili and sauerkraut to taste when we sat down, which is what they put on the coneys. It was soooo good. I debated getting a fried onion cheeseburger and a coney, but settled for a fried onion cheeseburger and chili cheese fries. The fries had old school Kraft singles as the cheese, and then that amazing chili on top. So. Good. I hate seeing one star reviews for the atmosphere alone, saying there is no "diner charm" to this place. Yes, it's small. Yes, it's smoky. Yes, it's dirty. It's an old school, hole-in-the-wall diner, not a restaurant decorated to look like a "cute" diner from the 1920s. From the looks of it, it hasn't been updated since it opened in 1926, and I find that awesome. The cooks were super friendly and shared some good tidbits with us about people from all over the world who come in for fried onion burgers. Food was good! Just had an onion burger, since we enjoy trying local tastes. But the service was pretty much the worst I've had in my memory. There's only about 10 seats at the counter. We sat in the middle two. There were 5 other people, of which two left about when we arrived, two were eating, and one was ordering. It was several minutes after taking the one gentleman's order, before our presence was acknowledged by either of the two non-cooking people behind the counter. Asked if we wanted something to drink and got that for us. After packaging a few burgers that were cooking, she finally asked what we wanted. After placing our food in front of us, she didn't acknowledge us again. When we finished I had cash in my hand and was just trying to make eye contact to ask how much we owed. I was ignored. The second person was in and out, took money from a customer finished before us (right next to us), and we had to get her attention to figure out our total and pay. This is a small place with perhaps a dozen counter seats ran by the owner with a grill man and backroom helper. The owner was friendly and asked for my drink as I sat down. I ordered a cheeseburger with grilled onions and chili cheese fries. The fries came 1st and the chili was pretty good. They use slices of American cheese instead of shredded, which was surprisingly tasty in combination with chili and fries. Definitely need a fork. The burger came off the flat top grill a few minutes later as I was about half way through the fries. I finished the fries and then began to pick at the burger, a flattened beef with piles of grilled onions. It was still quite hot and continued to pick until just cool enough to eat. I slowly finished it off, while watching the game and drinking unsweet ice tea. Total cost $9.95. Easy to get to off I-40 Or Route 66. Definitely worth checking out. read more
