I've been drinking kava in the confines of my own home for a little over a year now and I really respect the root and its properties. I was excited to hear that a kava bar was opening in Carrboro, even though it would be a significant drive from Raleigh. I finally made my way out there a couple of weeks ago, and found it to be a real joy. The kava was potent and was of a great age, and a couple of drinks I was in a great place. I drank less than I usually make at home, however that was not a problem as I felt very in tune with my surroundings and quite relaxed. I went with a buddy who I usually drink with, and he agreed that the kava was potent. I believe I talked with the bartender for a couple hours and found out a lot of information about kava and its preparations. Not to mention our conversions were of good nature and depth, unlike many conversations when inebriated with alcohol. Along with drinking kava, I had the joy of drinking Kratom. I always heard about the herb, but made no effort to actively seek it out. I was pleased to see it on the menu, and tried it together with the kava. Most definitely kept my mind clear, not to mention it complemented well, giving the kava almost a boost for some time. Before going to the bar, I looked here for reviews and pictures. I found that the pictures do not do it justice for the openness of the back room and the overall length of the space. The music went well with the atmosphere and I would like to see customers having the ability to change it if they wanted. Just to add that extra customization that will add to the uniqueness of kava. I would also encourage people to bring a group of people and just socialize, and get below the depths of the elevator conversions that life sometimes brings. I would also want to see the bar be able to sell root powders, and become a provider for people who rather drink in the comfort of there own homes ( and for it to be cheaper ). I currently buy my kava from Hawaii, which gets costly with shipping fees, so it would be a real plus to buy so close from a reputable place. However the price of the kava here was a bit steep at the bar, but again, the kava was of the utmost quality. My lack of funds don't bring me around too often, but they do have a rewards program that is generous for users. Overall, a great place to go chill, get away from the fast lane and chill. I will say, when I was done drinking and left the bar, I felt relived and quite refreshed to be back in the "real world". I was in there for a long time :). The bartender was extremely helpful since my wife and I had never drank kava or kratom before. He gave us a couple of samples and we chilled out for a bit and bought a couple of beverages. My companion found an interesting Greek white wine, and I asked for a boulevardier, my go-to cocktail for a new place. The wine was to her liking, and the cocktail was about the best example I've had in recent memory. Christian used Woodford Reserve bourbon and Campari rather than Aperol so it had a slightly less bitter taste and was a lovely auburn color. The food menu was very interesting, with lots of items we've never tried. We ordered caesar salad with anchovies, green beans in garlic-soup sauce, panella (a chick-pea and cream cheese dish), and seasoned French fries. It was all yummy and delivered together. The service we got really couldn't have been much better: attentive without hovering. The food and drink quality was outstanding, and we thought the prices were very reasonable for what we got. We hung out at "The Loft" bar and lounge on the 3rd floor which I believe is 25-and-up only. The Loft is like a covered rooftop patio with outside views on three sides, none of which face Franklin St directly, unfortunately. But still, it's a cool, sleek spot with a nice-looking bar, white couches, and high-tops. We stayed up in The Loft and never went downstairs where, presumably, the main club and dance floor are located. As we drove down Franklin St to get here, after 11pm on a Saturday night, we saw a line of what looked like undergrad-aged kids waiting to get in. So, I'm not sure what the atmosphere was like downstairs, but things were very "mature," chill, and relaxed upstairs. I didn't feel like I was on Franklin Street in downtown Chapel Hill. We parked for free in the James Wallace Parking Deck, accessible behind Still Life via E Rosemary St. The deck is next to "Amber Alley," which connects the back side of the buildings to Franklin St. On the deck side of the alley, our big group (who had a connection and called ahead) literally got red carpet treatment. Our IDs were checked and we were given wristbands to access The Loft. We took the glass elevator up and down and there were stairs too. Parking in the Wallace Deck was free because we parked outside the hours of operation: 8am-8pm, Monday-Saturday except holidays.
