Unfortunately, certain post op complications can't be foreseen or avoided when they are not necessarily related to your procedure. (Note: I've had surgery to my back and SI joint in the past, so do not consider these issues his fault.) That said, Dr. Wellborn immediately addressed the issue by referring me to a highly respected neurosurgeon as soon as he recognized there was an issue. He even called the guy ahead of time and greased the skids so I didn't have to wait the month to get squeezed into his schedule. Back to the normal expectations: I was able to ditch the walker within the first week and only used the cane if going long distances by week 2. I rode my bike around the block at day 6! And for a mile at 2 weeks!! It is still easier to ride my bike than walk for long distances but I suspect this may be due to my back. He did a phenomenal job on the wound closure, which was approximated perfectly and really looks beautiful. My hip is functioning quite nicely and the pain I had in the joint was gone when I woke from surgery. I had the expected post op pain but that was relatively short lived and I was able to stop the pain meds very quickly. Advice I wish I'd had...don't wait if you need this procedure. Likely the reason for some of my complications has to with my delays and the resultant weakened muscles in my core, back and legs. The surgery and recovery time weakens you even more. Do all you can before and after to get strong. You will need those muscles! Then, pick the best surgeon you can. For me, he was it. And he operates out of Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington. I've been there now for two surgeries and can honestly rate them as one of the best hospitals I've ever been to!

But for the last three visits, I was taken into a room 15-20 minutes late with no explanation. My appointment should take no more than 15-20 minutes. If I had not left 45 minutes later on my own, I don't know how long I would have sat in that room waiting for the PA. Today I had a 9:15 AM appointment. I waited 20 minutes after my appointment time to be put in a room finally at 9:35 AM, . Once in the room, I waited an additional 15 minutes for the doctor to come in. When Dr. Kaas came in, and she explained she was held up for personal reasons. I then waited for the PA to come in to finish the visit and she did not show up at all. I waited another 20 minutes and I decided to leave. I am 67 years old and have NEVER left a doctor's office in my life. I told the front desk why I left. Five minutes after leaving, I received a phone call from the PA who told me they were short staffed. She invited me to come in today at my convenience to complete the treatment, but I could not. I will not be returning to this practice. This all could have been avoided by a kind explanation at any point in time while I was in the office.

He kept pushing for injections and surgeries. These injections were costly and did not work, and even after understanding that, he kept emphasizing the injections. Finally after refusing the injections multiple times, he suggested multiple surgeries. Dr. Ryan performed one surgery on July 2025, and one again on January 2026. Every time I was seen for debilitating foot pain, he suggested surgery. After each surgery completed, my foot pain got worse and now I can't walk. Dr. Ryan also provided an inaccurate estimate of how long my recovery would be, he did a very intense surgery where a portion of my heel was removed, metal hardware was taken out, and he said I would be able to walk in 2 weeks. Several months later, even after physical therapy, I am unable to walk. I don't think I will ever be able to walk again. After one of my surgeries I was scheduled for a post op with Dr. Ryan, and upon arriving, I was told I could not be seen by him. Dr. Kaas ended up seeing me, and she did not provide a thorough exam of my incisions. She stood on one side of the room where she could not examine my entire foot, and I had multiple stitches on all sides of my feet. Dr. Kaas glanced at me and told me I looked fine. She then denied me any pain medications even though I was told to ask, and I needed them. The front office also is not communicative, and unhelpful. I've had to ask them multiple times to send in pain medication that I needed URGENTLY after my surgery, and they waited days to do so even after they told me they would send it same day. They also refused to prescribe me pain medication, they said a Dr. had to sign off on it but still made me wait - even though Dr. Ryan said he'd send it same day. I feel as though my pain levels were completely disregarded and misdiagnosed at this practice. The front office is also not clear on how the billing works, they never communicated that there would be more than one bill for one surgery, and they also charge a hefty credit card surcharge/processing fee, which I feel is already unfair, and not done at any other practice. Also, for being a medical office that specializes in foot and ankle care, their building is NOT accessible, at all. There are multiple stairs and a steep incline going into the building, no automatic doors at the office. It was extremely hard trying to maneuver an office being disabled and using mobility aids that I brought like a wheelchair, a scooter, a walker, crutches, and a cane. I don't think I will ever be able to walk again after being seen by both Dr. Ryan and Dr. Kaas. Please avoid this office at all costs.

My doctor suggested that I try physical therapy to help improve my symptoms. I was very skeptical at first - after all I went from being a very active person to not even being able to walk for 5 minutes without symptoms. But, I gave it a shot. Now, after 9 months or so of PT, I'm back to walking 10k steps without symptoms and am getting back on my Peloton bike after years of not being able to!!! My symptoms had been blamed on pulled muscle and other things for years, so by the time I got the right diagnosis, my hip was not in great shape. He explained my options thoroughly, risks/benefits of surgery, etc, and I never felt rushed. On followbut, I had biceps tendonitis, and he fit me in for a steroid injection, no problem. Both surgeries went well. My left did better, but it was done earlier, and honestly, I followed instructions better. I was able to run and do the things I wanted again. I was always able to get an appointment with him in a timely fashion. Sometimes, there may be a wait, but I would rather have a doctor who doesn't rush through your appointment than one on time.

I tried multiple cycles…read moreof physical therapy and really, really worked hard to avoid surgery because I was frankly afraid of the recovery. I saw three separate hip surgeons, and came to Ochiai after numerous recommendations from others. I've talked to no fewer than 20 people that have had hip arthroscopy with various surgeons. I've spoken with people that have had horrific experiences with recovery and results from the same procedure that I have. I have also talked to some who urged me to have the procedure because it improved their quality of life dramatically. Here is what I will tell you: your surgeon's experience and skill matter. Choose a surgeon that specializes in the procedure you need and commit to the physical therapy. I am absolutely convinced that Ochiai has a great deal to do with what I am going to characterize as a relatively easy recovery. I would recommend him without reservation for hip arthroscopy. I'm now three weeks after surgery and here is what I will tell you: -The procedure was far easier than I anticipated in many ways, and more difficult in others. The upshot is surgery was worth it and I wish I hadn't waited. I'm frankly stunned at how reasonable my recovery was. - I was not really in pain following surgery, just discomfort for a few days. I was off narcotics within 24 hours after surgery. I believe I took two narcotic pain pills after leaving the surgical center. - The worst things to anticipate about this surgery are 1) needing to have someone to help you out for the 48 hours or so afterward, 2) understanding that you will have to commit to wearing a brace for about 6 weeks afterward and to be on crutches for approximately 1-4 weeks after, and 3) understanding PT is a commitment for months after. - I live in a house with lots and lots of stairs. They were no problem. If you have a symptomatic torn labrum or pinching from FAI then I urge you to see Ochiai.

After years of condescending doctors looking down their noses while chucking multitudes of medicines at me for my low back and sciatic pain , I was nearly at my wit's end. However, the moment Dr. Gorsen walked into the evaluation room to greet me, I felt like someone was finally in my corner. He had a jovial tone (although he took me seriously), read my chart thoroughly, reviewed my MRI's extensively, let me speak without cutting me off, actually LISTENED, and fully processed what I had to say before responding. I can tell when a doctor enjoys his work by his bedside manner, and this doctor has a stellar one. While he's extremely busy (engaged in various side projects, inventions, and work with sports injury patients), Dr. Gorsen still took his time with me, didn't make me feel rushed, did make me feel comfortable, and managed to quickly devise and explain to me several prospective lines of attack to get to the root of my suffering. He patiently conveyed what I didn't understand in lay terms, and even offered an interim solution between now and the next time I would follow up with him - going back and forth several times to his supply room, working with me to find just the right sized back brace, and educating me on how to use it. If a guy this busy can manage to have a good humor, patience, and sympathy for his patients, the rest of you cocky doctors with atrocious people skills running patient mills should be ashamed. Additionally, the staff was pleasant, the office wasn't crowded with over-booked patients, and I've definitely had longer waits. Because of Dr. Gorsen, for the first time in three years, the light at my tunnel's end doesn't just seem like a freight train. He may or may not be able to help see me back to restored health; but at the very least, he HAS offered two very important things to me which no other doctor has bothered to even attempt thus far - and those are sincerity and hope. He has accrued an array of accolades over the years, and I can see why. I would recommend this neurosurgeon to anyone - near or far.
